haha I did The Jungle Book in 5th grade, and lemme tell ya, I'm about to show you how much of a dick my elementary school drama teacher was. These were his most iconic casting choices: 1. His mediocrely talented son (who was always in everything despite not being that good) as Shere Khan 2. My then-crush, and the best friend of the teacher's son, as Baloo (actually not bad since he had legit talent) 3. The girl I hated at the time (because she had been cast _before_ auditions "because she could sing") as Shanti (mind you, she and I were BOTH known for our voices) 4. Me...placed into costume crew (working mainly on Bagheera's costume) and eventually chosen alongside like 3 other costume designers to hold up Kaa's tail. I ended up being second to the back, except for one show when our back girl couldn't make it, so I ended up being a snake ass. It was a small part. I only had 2 lines to myself, we ran through all the choreo for "Trust in Me", and we made a minor appearance in "That's What Friends Are For" but still... this was 4 YEARS AGO!!! And it's also my only legit credit!! And get this, people tell me I'm AMAZING. I'd like to believe I'd have more to add on to my resume if I just had time for auditions, but for whatever reason my 5th grade self is just chilling in my brain, telling my freshman self that I've already screwed up my chances

@@ducky5277 yes, exactly. sometimes there is favoritism but honestly that’s pretty unlikely. besides, even if there is someone who repeatedly gets leads, think of it this way; if you need somebody to watch your dog, who would you trust more, your best friend or some kid who sits in the back of your math class that you’ve never even spoken to? the kid in the math class could be super trustworthy, but you need to see that first. so often when people first audition for theatre companies, they don’t get in or they get smaller roles for a while. but then maybe they’ll get a lead- and that’s also because talent grows over time.
I think if you know that its with the same school, then yes, its probably the directors favorites. But for pro companies or community theatre, it isnt uncommon for the same people to get leads because the company knows they can do it and theyre talented.

DEH is my favourite show because no one is perfect. Everyone has a lot of flaws in in, especially Evan. Yes, he did a lot of shit, but he was forced in the beginning, and after, he saw that it was "good" for the Murphy's and continued with it. I literally have a word document on my phone with script parts to defend each character's point of view. All of them are babies and I love them all
The show meant a lot to me when I first saw it ! Hell, I was on the original poster ! But now, when I think critically about it, it’s super fucking creepy ! The lies were all self preservation and they were super shitty but I get the argument that he was forced into it. (He wasn’t forced he did have some choice but I understand the argument.) what isn’t defendable is the fact that he manipulated his longtime crush into liking him back through blatant lies.

Musician Vent Time: West Side Story might be a rehash of Romeo and Juliet, but god dammit you can't consider somebody boring for appreciating a collaboration between the Big Bad Bernstein and STEVEN GODDAMN SONDHEIM! It is literally a perfect combination. It has a brilliantly written score and tackles even more themes than the material it was referencing (and thus can be considered a viable work on its own and not some lazy ripoff). Sure, it's a bit of a cliche answer, but that would likely apply to a show that people usually think is the best musical in the world without even bothering to listen to any others. But yeah, the fact that Leonard Bernstein wrote all of the music to West Side Story with basically three notes is pretty damn impressive. You gotta at least give it credit for the creativity of the composer.

My favorite musical is Beetlejuice. 1. Yeah, my dream role is probably Lydia (or Angelica Schuyler but I'd prefer to be in Beetlejuice, hell yeah) 2. Uh... Not quite the same thing, but when my theatre class had to come up with scripts that defined words and one of my group's was Macbeth, I was rewriting part of the script and nobody had written anything for it and it was all improv... I almost tripped over a chair whilst walking backwards..
Beetlejuice is definitely my favourite musical too. The songs are bops, the storyline is amazing, the characters are lil cinnamon rolls and just the set and the makeup is unreal

Ok but the "amazing mayzie" got me nostalgic. I had to do the Seussical Jr in elementary and I almost got in...but learned the 4th graders could only audition to move ribbons in the "bath" scene and felt that was stupid so I dipped. I was able to watch it though! It was so well done and everyone did great
i'm not a theatre kid but i've starred on one musical show in our school (high school; last year) and I am the lead. we had so much fun and won second place. however, they said we're supposed to be the champion but got deducted because our time limit passed 15 mins. but anyways in our hearts, we're still the champion.

Ok but the "amazing mayzie" got me nostalgic. I had to do the Seussical Jr in elementary and I almost got in...but learned the 4th graders could only audition to move ribbons in the "bath" scene and felt that was stupid so I dipped. I was able to watch it though! It was so well done and everyone did great
