    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
M'Lynn (Sally Field) grieves for her daughter, and when she expresses a desire to hit something, Clairee (Olympia Dukakis) suggests slapping Ouiser (Shirley MacLaine).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
The title refers to those seemingly frail Southern belles who survive any and all deprivations through whims of iron. Robert Harling's original stage play was set exclusively in a Louisiana beauty parlor where an all-female cast of characters laughed, cried and compared menfolk. The film expands the playing field by including scenes at picnics, hospitals and the like, and by visually depicting the males who never appeared in the stage version. Dolly Parton plays the goodnatured beauty-shop owner, while Shirley MacLaine is the cantankerous town eccentric, decked out in grungy overalls and speaking fluent Trash. Well-to-do Sally Field bravely endures several assaults to her sensibilities, not the least of which is the illness (and subsequent death) of daughter Julia Roberts. The performances are first-rate, with the possible exception of Daryl Hannah's overemphatic portrayal of a gawky hairdresser. The film stumbles a bit in its depiction of the male characters as fools and deadheads, and in the final overlong hospital scenes involving the comatose Roberts, which play like a road company version of Terms of Endearment. Otherwise, Steel Magnolias is a prime example of ensemble filmmaking, lovingly coordinated by director Herbert Ross. (Sidebar: Herbert Ross was reportedly rather rough on Julia Roberts, deriding her lack of experience. The rest of the female cast rallied around Roberts and told the director to lay off or pay the price).

I think Dolly was very under appreciated in this movie, she was brilliant, the scene with spud after Shelby died is amazing, when Spud says "Whats this for anyway" and Dolly turns around and says "it makes you beautiful", you can see her face and know she doesn't believe that anymore after Shelby dying.

Truvey was always trying to connect w/Spud, hoping to share & receive some affection. Spud has just admitted he would be devastated "if something like that happened to him".(Truvey dying). Distracts himself from his emotions, by messing with the wax. I think the emotion on Truvey/Dolly's face, is because he has, finally admitted that he loves her. She says "it makes you beautiful" & he is looking straight at his beautiful wife. Dolly is gorgeous, marvelous and talented !

I don't know how many takes they needed for Sally Field to capture those expressions and reactions but it's priceless. From the "wth??" at the start to "omg I don't want to laugh"... the whole thing is perfect. And the buildup is amazing also. Her swings from anger to frustration to utter sadness and back are just... wow...
Olympia Dukakis reminds me so much of my grandmother in this scene. She pulls off a southern matriarch so well. My grandmother has always tried to defuse tense situations with humor. "Here... hit this" will go down as one of the best lines in a movie ever.

It's been 20 years since I've first seen this movie and yet I always cry at this scene each time even though I know what happens. My sister died when she was 14 years old and it definitely took a toll on me and altered my life in many ways. It wasn't until this movie, until I saw this scene, that made me realize how my mother must've felt.
Even someone so strong can be broken down. To any parent out there that has lost a child, my thoughts are with you. I know you always planned to go first, which is normal and the way it should be, but you'll always have those memories to reflect on. Be grateful you were able to have them exist in your life, even if the timing wasn't enough. There's never enough time.

I lost my dad April 2016 just before his 65th birthday. He had managed to live 25 years with Crohn’s Disease and we had no warning of how sick he was until the day before he died. I was diagnosed with Crohn’s myself later in 2016 and had to face surgery and living with the disease without my dad who had always been my rock. Even with the passage of time I still have moments where this scene aptly describes every emotion I feel over losing my father. ❤️

This movie and especially this scene always makes me cry 😭I lost one of my best friends in a motor cycle accident about 5 years ago and while I'm sad that I lost my friend..I feel even sadder for his poor mother. She has lost two of her children (one at child birth), then she lost both of her parents, an uncle, and recently her brother died. The woman has had so much loss in her life that I honestly don't know how she gets out of bed in the morning. I know she deals with depression because we spoke about that the last time we talked. I hope and pray that she has more people in her corner uplifting her because she needs it.

My Mom used to say that Sally's character portrays what a person goes through after they have lost a loved one. After losing both my Mom and Dad, I can say that she was right. It is like being on a roller-coaster from Hell. One second you're doing well and the next second you're balling your eyes out!

I was pretty little when I watched this. I didn't understand all the things the ladies were talking about, but I was so sad when Shelby got sick and all, and when she died. I remember, though, that I really liked Sally in the movie. I wanted to be like her when I grew up. She was my favorite in Forrest Gump, too, though she and Bubba were at my top list.
