- When the State of Georgia electrocuted some some inmates, a prison employee was in the death chamber, on a phone with the District Attorney's office, giving a blow by blow of the proceedings. The conversations were also taped.
Imagine you are an attorney general and your name is Baker in a state with the electric chair.
My old childhood friend was murdered by a bunch of kids who lacked discipline from their lazy parents just to prove a point they are big. As a result my life long detest and hatred of capital punishment has disappeared, unfortunately the death penalty isn't an option where I live. I may change my mind in the future, but 2 months on my anger is still present so I have no sympathy for anyone on death row or being executed (unless they are innocent).

In 1995, I was a Permanent there, a trustee inmate for the prison, working in maintenance. We were able to listen to some of those tapes. They were NOT in a secure area. We, Inmates, got our hands on them and listened to some of them. When they executed Charles Devier in 1995, the morgue was covered in blood and saline solution that we cleaned up, that they left. No one can dispute my experience and what I saw there.
First off it isn't so the chair can reset, it's for the body to cool down. Jesus. Get the basic facts right Randy
I don't think it' s really a "reset" or "cool down" time. I think the purpose is to allow time for all biological functions to cease. Then, the doc makes his check. If they aren't dead, then another sequence is run.
E.L. Norton, i agree with you... its kind of "un-said", but i believe that is a big factor in why they do it..on top of the other reasons.

No. It takes 5 minutes for the body to cool down enough so that the prison physician present can check for a heartbeat.
@@dangelo1369 It's not really about the body cooling down. It doesn't get that hot. It's certainly cool enough to hold a stethoscope to. The Dr isn't going to burn himself. It's more to ensure the cessation of life functions. The heart can resume beating, etc. You don't want to take the guy out of the chair and have his heart start beating 3 minutes later. The witnesses have dispersed. You have to put him back in the chair. It's a whole thing.
if i was to be in that situation, id pick the chair. its the fastest.

It is important to execute the criminal in the most humane way possible,NOT out of consideration for the criminal,but we don't injure ourselves as a people in the process.

What that judge didn't realize is that until about 35 years ago (1982, specifically), electrocution was long considered the most humane method of execution used in the United States; it wasn't until the early 1980s, when chemicals for lethal injection were introduced, that states began making a move towards injection.

By all means replace the chair with HANGING which connotes an appropriate shame missing in the chair and lethal injection.
The state of Georgia says that the tapes were made to prove that procedure was followed. My question is why not use video tape? It is a more accurate method of recording what really happens rather than a cassette tape. Also it does not allow for a cover up to take place if there is a problem with the execution. I am not saying that executions are wrong. What I am saying is that the method of recording the event makes little to no sense and certainly was out dated at the time they were made. It sounds alot to me like somebody did not think this through.

Let's be a bit more accurate. The current goes through the electrodes, not the chair. The chair itself is a restraining device; the head and calf electrodes are what delivers the fatal current.

I have no problem with brutal murderers being punished severely, but I do have a problem with the possibility of one or more individuals being executed wrongly - and the poor souls that are left scarred for life, for having to live with delivery of the ultimate penalty.
And that's the closest we will get to experiencing an execution.

Yes, although not exactly. The closest thing to what you are describing, was the execution of Willie Francis, in Louisiana. In a portable electric chair that was wired wrong, he survived the first attempt. Battered, bruised, and burnt quite badly, he survived, this only bought him a year‘s worth of time, though. There is a big question on his guilt, and he may have been posthumously pardond. he was successfully executed the next year, in the same chair, wired correctly this time. The chair itself had a name, gruesome, dirty.

Killing a murderer makes the state no better than the crazy killer. Solitary confinement is the way to go.

Actually, it's quite efficient and quick. Quicker than the other methods currently available, including firing squad.

Electrocution is a sweet dream compared to what I'd do to someone who murdered a friend of family member.
I've had a relative of mine killed and I still oppose capital punishment. I oppose it on 3 grounds: 1. It fails as a deterrent 2. The possibility of error; executing an innocent. 3. The state has no right to take what it does not grant or create-life.

Then, don't kill 'em. "Death by incarceration", instead. I mean, think about it: short of a summary execution, we're basically locking him up for life, until we have him killed. Why not skip the killing part?
Another consideration: We have the death penalty because we believe that the condemned value their life as much as we value our own (a poor assumption by both parties) but by the time of execution, the condemned is already resigned to his fate and the value of his life to himself and the state is zero. So we're taking away nothing of value and gaining nothing of value. So what's the point?
Save time and money! Just put them into the coffin alive, screw it shut and then bury the box. No messy clean up. Job done.

I am the wife of the warden portrayed(Turpin) although Tony carried out his job duties to commend Ward and Turpin for his service to the state of Georgia and it was basically because he did two executions back to back that’s what they told him to do he said to schedule for the same day in and especially really trying really hard on whoever carries out the procedure so it takes a lot out of the execution team I know but there’s another interview I’ve seen where Tony has been asked if he supports capital punishment and death by execution and he’s position was “ it’s not a matter of subjectivity or what I want. I satisfying my job duties …what is demanded of me according to my job detail period.” At the same time it was Tony who set out to explore more “humane” “fail-proof” options to carryout the state of Georgia law and came back presenting his findings on lethal injection. Regardless that it is not done in accordance with anyone of the teams desires it still Carrie’s an emotional and mental toll on them and that is whether one admits it to another or not. It is my personal opinion and experience that it is an event or subject mainly avoided by them and if one did address it they won’t allow emotion to enter or anything .it is only acknowledged superficially with a 20 foot pole. I always said it takes a part of them every time they. Must carry out their order according to the law. That’s something I don’t thing the community at large takes into consideration . No matter what your position, taking another’s life will affect you to some degree. Just saying

Dawn Edwards Good point. They obviously weren't concerned with being humane with their victims. In a way, we shouldn't be concerned with being humane with them during their execution. But we do it humanely to show that we, unlike them, are compassionate, respect human dignity no matter the person, and in order not to go down to their level of evil and cruelty. In other words, it seems we execute them humanely more for our own sake than for their sake of not feeling pain, etc. And it sounds weird, doesn't it? :)

I suppose your right, and yes I see your point. I just do not feel sorry for them. I guess because there was someone that took someone from me, and her family.. my best friend was murdered by her ex boyfriend. Sad thing is he got life instead of the death penalty.

You know, some may say "Oh, but these killers were abused as kids and so they were made like that. It's not their fault" etc. etc.
I beg to differ. Even if a killer was abused as a child, they did have the freedom to make their own choices to make their lives better, not worse. We often see that they may start killing animals, stealing, pyromania, drugs... They themselves made those choices. And eventually they end up murdering. They can't be excused. A person must take control over their life and not let it spiral out of control. And there's professional help available, too.

Their is no place in our society for people who intentionally murder any person.... that brings untold grief to the victims relatives and the memory that future generations have to bear. The high current forcing 2kV through the brain is decisive... the brain cannot operate to send any signals of pain and even it were so! it would only be m/Seconds....But their murdered victims pain would certainly be much much longer than this. Those who have suffered the death of a loved one through a murderer are the one's that need compassion & support....Not the man/woman in a cage.

Nobody has the right to take another person's life. The 6th Commandment says "Thou shall not kill". And that applies to everyone, including Governments. Execution is an act of barbarity which demeans the human race. It is nothing more than legalized murder. Those who authorize it or take part in it have blood on their hands and ought to be ashamed of themselves. Some day, they will have to account for their actions before God. I pity them.

There appears to be far too much sympathy leveled at the condemned,not much focus on the sometimes horrific deaths visited upon the victims,so it can sometimes take more than one jolt to kill,that's still an easier way out than the victims ever had.

Oh no, I just have a problem with people who have been sentenced to death for crimes they did not commit. With that, I have an opposing view of the death penalty. That coupled with the fact that I am not blood thirsty.
Obviously , there is a problem if somebody is convicted of anything if innocent. I am not blood thirsty but morality requires that horrible murderers like Ted Bundy be executed. To not have executed him would have been extremely immoral.
I don't have a problem with people being punished, However, I do know of one person who was executed that was innocent. His name was George Junnius Stinney Jr. he was put to death 83 days after the crime was committed. He did not get a fair trial because he was black. He weighed 95 pounds. he was 5 feet tall. he was 14 years old. The actual murderer was white man who was also a pedofile that gave a dying man's declaration of this crime. If we run the risk of killing the wrong person, the real criminal get's away.

If there is a God, which I hope there is. I believe those kiddos will go back to heaven and and sent back into the arms of loving parents. Unborn children ARE innocent but there is so much that cannot be explained. I lost a baby shortly after birth...where was God then??? My baby would've had been greatest parents in the world. Don't blame abortion, babies die it's part of the pain of living. When it's not their time, it just isn't their time. It's no one's fault.
