  • EP 31: Mono Hot Springs - Exploring the Sierra Nevada
    #monohotsprings #sierranevada #california
    Our first night staying in Coarsegold, CA we realized we were unable to get into Yosemite without a reservation. We changed directions and ventured out to explore the Sierra National Forest. We headed to Mono Hot Springs. Seemingly not too far from our campground, it actually takes 2 1/2 hours to get to due to the route. Mono Hot Springs is pretty remote, but that's part of the charm. The drive there winds through the mountains, is incredibly scenic and mostly one way. If you're easily car sick getting there may be tough for you. Once you're there, there is a small resort with a general store, cabins, restaurant and a campground. You can park in the day parking for free to explore the springs. Since 1935 people have been coming to this remote resort and during non-covid times you can even book a spa treatment. Even with limited things open, the springs make this visit (and drive) worthwild. You hike to spring after spring and it was a ton of fun finding each. Some of the springs have stone tubs filled with the spring water and all vary in temperature. We both felt like this place was a hidden gem we were lucky to find!

    Just a heads up, you NEVER dunk your head under water in hot springs, you run the risk of contracting amoebic meningitis FOR WHICH THERE IS NO CURE.

      Not just dunking but even splashing around bc the brain-eating amoeba enters through the nasal cavity. Maybe if you wear nose plugs? I wouldn’t chance it, though, bc it’s pretty fatal. Very few people have survived it.

    I just came back from Mono today, it's not a secret anymore. Thanks for telling the world, I won't be going back after traveling there since 1970's

      How many people were there?

    • @peterandkodiak9762

      I used to be a resident of Bishop in 1962, having visited most all the hot springs in the area. I rarely saw people, esp. those who litter, drink alcohol/party at night. It was never really a "secret", however, now the entire world knows about it unfortunately due much to Social Media, those "broadcasting" its presence. Social Media? = because there is $ for content creators. These places are not being "discovered". They are being rediscovered. Native Americans used them before civilization was ever established. Soon there will be no place to escape away from the leash of the Internet ...............................................

    Beautiful video! Would you say it's a doable drive in a car without much clearance? (Honda Civic)

    • @JustAdrift
      @JustAdrift  4 года назад +1

      Hi Suzanne. It is doable in a car with low clearance. Just leave plenty of time for the drive because you will probably need to go slow in some places. Hope this helps. Have fun out there!

    Hey planning on going here next weekend, how was the hike and how long?

    • @JustAdrift
      @JustAdrift  2 года назад

      Hey! The hike is really wandering around looking for the springs vs a long hike to get to one destination. All trails considers it a hike, but I’d say a very easy walk that can be very muddy. Have a great time!

    • @JustAdrift
      @JustAdrift  4 года назад +1

      Hi Virginia! Yes, we just parked in the visitors center and visiting the river and hot springs was free. It was incredible. They do have a store on site that was open if you needed anything and a restaurant that should reopen at some point. Typically they also have a spa but it was closed when we were there so we just utilized the springs.

      Thank you for this video. I travel up hwy 395 yearly for lake Tahoe and have never had much interest in ever stopping at mono lake, but NOW I most definitely do. Visiting as many hot springs in my home state of Southern California is on my bucket list. Thank you.

    Could an SUV with a small trailer (Casita) use the Kaiser Pass Road?

    • @gregkendall3559
      @gregkendall3559 10 месяцев назад

      I think it could, but it would be a total pain in the arse! You would have to go very slow and it would be stressful if you had to pass other cars going the other way. It's a long bumpy very narrow road but I think it is doable with a small trailer.

    • @AllenManor
      @AllenManor 10 месяцев назад

      @@gregkendall3559 I agree with your advice. We visited Mono Hot Springs back in August. The Kaiser Pass road was better than I thought but only slightly. It's possible to tow on it (I saw someone towing a small motor boat and I saw large Edison trailers parked on the side of the road) but I don't think it's worth the aggravation. I definitely would not dream of towing anything larger than a 24 ft. trailer. Towing a 5th wheel or driving a larger motorhome would be disastrous. I will never take my Casita back there but if I absolutely had to do it I would make sure I had a more powerful tow vehicle (mainly for braking) and I'd probably try to time the drive during late hours when the road would probably be deserted.

    The road is terrible. Nobody ever drive it ever. Go somewhere else. Its undoable. Don't come. I mean.... don't go.
    Seriously tho don't post videos of these places man, let people find them on their own research and adventures. You're just asking for them to get over crowded, littered and just another place that turned to shit

      As an outdoor enthusiasts , I totally understand this sentiment but without videos such as these I would never know nor ever stop at mono lake as it never appealed to me. I like to think that people who do enjoy the outdoors would have a sense of respect for the land and live by leave no trace as well as leaving an area better than when you got there by picking up any trash along the way.
