    Hi,
    Slight correction there, if you have an old generation system and you upgrade from S1 to S2 it is possible to downgrade back to S1, the condition is to have an S1 system with at least one speaker register there (Bridge excluded), if so by factory resetting the speaker or speakers you will be able to add them back to the S1 system / App.

    • @HowToPM
      @HowToPM  2 года назад +2

      Hi. Thank you for your comment. Have you tested it? Because once it is updated, when I reset it, it quickly come back available to add on the system and no update is required to add it again. It would mean that the S1 system could still see it and be able to process a downgrade? Maybe something new.
      Actually I have double check and you are right that is now possible : en.community.sonos.com/troubleshooting-228999/sonos-one-downgrade-6842836

      @@HowToPM It was always possible to add back on S1 the S1 and S2 capable speakers (there are only S1 capable, only S2 capable and these S1 and S2 capable speakers) back to S1, if there is an exiting s1 already in place, but now speakers that were updated to S2, as Sonos one SL(an S1 and S2 capable speaker) cannot go back to S1 once updated to S2. And one other thing that have changed and is important; Sonos won't kill anymore the old spankers for discounts. Everybody will get discounts upon having legacy speakers and keep on the same time the old speakers. But apart form these... damn you did a good job :))

    Thanks for this video. I have been putting off this upgrade for some time. I have a play 5 which was the first Sonos I owned in 2010. It has been and still is a solid piece of gear. I can imaging what people 40 years ago would think about a $500 speaker that you could only use for 5-10 years - they’d probably think something was in the water.

    Very true unacceptable from Sonos to stop supporting these products. I am sure Sonos sales will drop since similar Bluetooth devices are catching up.

      @HowToPM  3 года назад +1

      Well, in fact they didn't stop suporting older device. They build a new app for newer devices wich is not compatible for older.
      But yes at the end this is a terrible move.

  • @funkyzero
    @funkyzero 3 года назад +4

    this right here is why I stopped expanding my sonos system and won't buy anymore, and am slowly replacing it. I can understand not developing anymore firmware for the old devices, but nixing them from the central app is unacceptable, and a bad move... spitting in the eye of customers who already paid too much for something in the first palce for the SOLE purpose of integration. discontinuing the remote was bad enough and almost made me want to ditch it, it was REAL close call. But this was the end of my love of sonos. It's over for me, I'm moving on to standard gear with a DAC/bluetooth/wifi solutions. no more proprietary stuff, they don't care about me, I don't care about them.

    The marketing was handled poorly and created a lot of misunderstanding. We are still supporting S1 systems by releasing security and stability updates for them. Some new features are indeed only released on S2, not because we are trying to force users to update but because the hardware inside those older devices is simply too outdated to reliably run the things we are planning to add. It’s unrealistic to expect a smart speaker designed in 2012 to be able to stream lossless FLAC radio stations, for example.

    • @HowToPM
      @HowToPM  3 года назад +2

      I totally get that. You say we... Are you working for Sonos? In fact like you said you keep suport older device keep doing what they did since the begining and you keep suporting them. Wich is really nice for a tech product to be suported for that timeframe.
      The thing that I don't get, is that you force some costumer to change their speaker if they want to buy newer one.
      You prove for a long time that you can support devices for a very long time and even share feature like airplay to older device if you integrate a new speaker.
      It would have been great if older speaker, could be merged with S2, but just not doing things they can't, like FLAC for exemple.
      In my case I don't care about FLAC, I just want to listent my RUclips music. Witch is possible on S1 and S2... But not together.
      You system is about harmony, but now force division.
      But hey, still I like what you do and promote your devices.
      It's just that this one is hard to swallow, and worry me about the future of my own speaker.

    I just came across your channel today. Thank you so much as I have already learned a few new things about Sonos through your videos. But, I haven’t found the answer to my actual question, which is:
    I have recently upgraded from S1 to S2 app, but can’t get my Sonos Playlist to transfer from S1 to S2. I run the Sonos app on my iPhone. I still have my first generation connect and connect amp at home. I called Sonos help line multiple times today but they are clueless!
    I found a similar question/comment chain on Sonos website which at the end had no solution for the customer.
    Your help is highly appreciated!

      Hi Pedram! Thank you for your comment. Hum. Everything well transferred for me. But maybe that's because all my playlist are from the music service and not build in Sonos. Is it because you Music is local? I wonder that if it didn't transfer, there might have no easy solution for you.

    Your insight is appreciated but there’s no way in hell I’m ever buying another Sonos product. For years they’ve had the worst customer service of any tech company and now they are giving the finger to countless loyal customers. I hope the company goes belly up and the executives stock options are worthless. Fuck Sonos.

    • @HowToPM
      @HowToPM  4 года назад

      Hi Alex! I am with you on this one. Absolute great product. The service was great at their begining. As technician I had to speak with them many time. Howerver it did change to like you said, one of the worst. At least, their product is almost never defective. The sad thing in here, is that I am almost sure that they they were able to make their old product compatible with the new generation, even if new one brings new technology, the principle of their product is still to play music. So... Well, I really see that as a way to force costumer to buy new one. But in your case and probably in my case to, I see that as something terrible and I feel that as a betrayal of trust, so probably many won't buy again. I would like to think that this is in link with their recent (2 years) shift to public stock. They want to please their stock holder instead of the costumer.

    Thank you very much for the very explanatory video.
    I totally disagree with SONOS policy. I have several SONOS equipment for which I have spent a lot of dollars (2 Sonos 5, Sonos Bar, Sonos Amp, and Sonos 1) of the first generation that are still very solid products and of very good quality. I do not live in the USA so I even had to pay a lot of money in freight to Asunción, Paraguay, but I did it with pleasure because of the quality of what I was buying but I never imagined that SONOS would surprise us with a policy like this. In my country there is not even the possibility to dispose of the old product and pay a difference for the new one.
    I was a real fan of SONOS but now I have definitely decided to switch to BOSE.

Sonos get rid of that procedure earlier in March. That's a good thing! If you had done it last year or at earlier in 2020, your device would had ended up in recycle mode.

If the music that is on your phone cannot be played on Sonos, that must be because it's a format that is not recognized by Sonos, or it's a protected files, like most of the song you purchase from iTunes. At the price point we paid for these speakers, there's no reason for it. Speaker from 30 to 40 years ago still work. They were technology as well. The industry tells us a lie and we all believe it. S1 used to allow addition on additional components. They removed that ability from the app. Its an older speaker I want to add. Sonos blocked this abilility. They had to actively choose to do that. I think you didn't well understand. The problem is that, from now, if you want to buy a new product that is release after may 2020, like Sonos Arc, Sonos 5 of Sub Gen 3, you wont be able to integrate them into the sonos S1 app. So you will have to update your older device to S2. This is not a problem, unless you have uncompatible device to S2. If you do, they will need to be operate from 2 different app.
      I have install over 1000 sonos device over the last 10 years, I know Sonos devices very well.
