The Hunt for a Bull - Fly Fishing for Louisiana Redfish

- Bull Redfish in New Orleans, Louisiana has been a bucket list trip for me for quite some time. Earlier this year my friend Charley invited me on this trip of a lifetime! The goal was simple a Bull Red (20+ pounder) on the fly rod. Now I can see the obsession with these sight fishing for these beats with the fly. What a life! Thanks for watching!

Great video, I'm glad you enjoyed your trip to Louisiana. A tip for future reference, please don't hang big fish by the mouth on a boga or other scale, you can damage their mandibles. I catch a lot of big redfish, when I need to weigh them I weigh them in the net than tare the weight of the net.
Wish he would've seen this, I think the same thing and I've tried commenting about the handling of fish but it goes nowhere. Used to think it was just the smaller fish he treated kinda shitty
@5:47 dude had a hall of fame presentation. That was PRO fly angling 101! Beautiful to watch.
The guide, Dave Best, is one of the best.
I was surprised to hear him say that bull reds are classified by weight. That is not the case. A bull red is any redfish 27" or greater. Out of your limit of 5, only one 27+ can be kept. But man... that looked like a heck of a good time catching them on a fly rod!
Another incredible trip man! Nice job landing that giant with a broken rod!!
Snapped rod would put a damper on my attitude. Redfish are a blast to catch for sure. More fish fighting and landing is always better than talking to us. Super awesome work!
Thanks for watching!
It's what I do. My clients have caught hundreds of bulls. It's fun, man.
Jay - enjoyed the video and have been fishing with Captain Rich for about 20 years. You referred to him as an ex Marine but he is actually Vietnam War combat veteran Col. Richard Waldner USMC Retired. He is one the original sight fly fishing guides in that area along with Captains Mark Brockhoeft and Kirby LaCour. Thank you for your service Capt Rich.
Hey John - I’m a retired Marine Major and would love to fly fish with the Colonel. Can I get his business contact information?
Love the cinematography in that intro!!!
Although it's not ice fishing at this time of year i still thoroughly enjoyed the video and am glad to see you check a bucket list species off your list. Great video Jay! Keep it up!
Thanks Kassidy!
Another awesome video Jay.
This is definitely something I’d love to do one day.
Gutted you snapped your rods, and Helios rods at that.
You should add Kingfish on fly to your bucket list if it isn’t already...
Much love from Sydney Australia.
Cheers, Chris
Thanks for watching! Yeah, luckily those rods have warranty.
Big redfish is on the bucket list.
I just watched your redfish video and loved it. That is something I would also love to do. I couldn't believe you had two rods break . How funny and exciting.
You're videos are absolutely awesome!! I mean... much better then everything else I saw on RUclips
Yeah Jay!!!!! What a fun trip. Reds are a blast. Thanks for the fun video
Yeahhhh! Thanks Travis!
Sick vid. Shout out to the senior laying it down.
Yeah, captain rick was legit
Nice! video upped just a few min ago and I'm excited! EDIT: WOW what a hookset & fish!
Great job jay!
Sweet! That gongshow on that big red looked fun!
That was a bad ass video! Aaron's not my favorite RUclipsr any more. You are the king of fishing in my book.
Awesome video…..all fishermen need a REDS trip!!!!
This is a dream trip for me. I’m gonna be there in April and will try getting a guide for a couple of days. Thanks for showing us your experience
Next level, you make some of the best fishing content on youtube! Keep it up bud!
🥰🥰🥰
The best on RUclips 🙌🏼 JUST LOOK AT THOSE FISH 😍
🥰🥰🥰
Seems like 15 weight polls would of been a better choice. Tens can't handle those Canadian Bacon hooksets. Saltwater is so much fun. Those were Walmart polls right. ;-) Orvis has a lifetime warranty.
Absolutely insane man! Those fish look like a great time!!
Thanks buddy!
Bro, your nose....... oh man I can’t stop laughing/cringing. This is perfect Taro to the T, pun intended!
I am 61 seconds in and I can’t stop laughing I had to stop and post this before even watching the video. Kudos to whoever did the make up and made you “pretty” for the big day. I didn’t notice it at all in the few video clips I saw from Clayton et al.
Man....I was hoping no one would notice. Unforuntately Taro has truly left his mark on me for life....oh well.
@@JaySiemens battle scars brother!
another beautiful video my guy!
Sooooo good Jay!!!
😘😘
Great Video Jay! Thanks for sharing your fishing adventure south of the border! :)
Thanks for watching!!!
I kind of find it weird that you are "trout hook set" for these fish. I'm use to fly fish fish for pikes and bass (Canada eh!) and I'm all "strip hook set". Even these pros hook set with the rod... Anyway, hook set apart, super nice vid! These red's are also on my bucket list. I really enjoyed.
You shouldn’t be trout setting with anything other than trout. But it’s hard for people especially northerners to not do it. Im in south Florida and I still catch myself doing it every once in a while
Excellent video jay. Super super entertaining
Thanks so much nick!!! Appreciate the support
@@JaySiemens excited for 39 hours🤪
Awesome video. I fish in SW Florida and any one of those reds caught on fly down here would be a fish of the year. Crazy how many they landed.
Dope video, keep them coming💪
Thanks for watching!
Big redfish won’t break your 10 weight fly rod once the hook has been set. Set hook by pointing the rod directly at the fish and stripping with force. Be sure to have a good grip on the line because there will be a strong response.. Then slowly lift your rod and let the loose line play out until you’re fighting the fish from your reel. Use pressure from your palm to increase drag. If you are wading in shallow water, don’t use a net because it always gets tangled in your line or stringer. Just push the fish down to the bottom with your hand and remove the hook.
Yeah, user error on that one.
Wow that was an epic video!
Big fan Jay keep up the good work!
Liked before watching👍
This is crazy! I didn’t realize how easily these fish can snap your rod.
Ok, Jay fighting that bull with a rod broken off behind the last eyelet actually had me stressed out! Good job dude!
Also 100th comment
It was very stressful
Jay, can you share the info from the two guides you used? Also a bucket list trip for me. Great vid!
Artstein3, if you're still looking, the first was Capt. Dave Best, and the second was Capt. Rich Waldner. Both are local fabulous guides. Let me know if you have any questions.
@@coreytohme9861 Thank you!
Congratulations and thanks for another GREAT video.
Thanks so much Brian!!
You're welcome. I am realizing you are the granddaddy of videography, I see AP, Sobi, and others using your style. It's AWESOME to see you guys all working together to better the industry and show the viewers those scenic drone landscapes and use timelapse and slow motion to add perspective. Do you do much dead bait for PIKE? I'm curious about smelt vs sardines or shad vs whitefish and different types of marinade? I look forward to watching and learning from your videos and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
i'm going to Louisiana!
just a different world down there eh. 25 pounder on the fly! could you spin cast for them?
Your vids are amazing man
top-notch...
🙏🙏🙏
That was a awsome video man hope to c u on the new 39 hours
Thanks! Yup, Jan 8th!
Rip to the Orvis H2 and Sage xi2 rods lol. Awesome video!
Hello random person scrolling through the comments, have a wonderful day!
You too
thank you bro you're the best internet person ever
You too!
Well that was very nice of you. You swell fella you.
@@permitfisher Thanks
Snappin' 'em twigs like there's no tomorrow!
💪💪💪
I've snapped 2 rods. One on a red, one on a black drum.
Oh yea, Is Husky the Musky still up in Kenora Jay?
I'm so jealous it hurts. Been trying to catch a bull like that for many years.
What part of Louisiana were you guys fishing in? I am always looking for new spots to fish in my state that I haven't been to yet. I have personally never fly fished for red, we typically use vudo shrimp or shad and fish artificial or run a popping cork. I have always wanted to try fly fishing for reds though. Most of the areas I fish are just too murky to sight fish though.
You should meet up with old Jon B. Looks like he’s on the Texas coast
veroman007 😂😂
Amazing video!!!!!
Thanks!!
My video is up from Terrebone Parish. It really is the best place to catch them.
Awesome! Sucks about the two rods though. 😥
Love it!!!
🙏🙏
Those redfish have really beautiful eyes
You have beautiful eyes
Nobody gunna talk about the $1k rod snapping?
Haha
@@JaySiemens how did you manage breaking that? twice. really, I would like to know so I won't do it.
On the first rod I think I just bent it at an awkward angle landing the fish...on the 2nd I think the rod must not have been pushed all the way in and broke the connection.
@@JaySiemens ok. That makes sense. Good to know......important to know.
Probably not, because there’s this thing called a strip set...
Wow sickkkk
❤️❤️
Great anti-endorsement for the Orvis Helios in this video…great fishing though, and well done video!
You lucky bugger!
🥰🥰🥰
u live in manitoba? so do i. its nice to see youtubers in our province there isnt much ?
I live in kenora, Ontario
👏🏼
39 hours
Yes
Where did y'all fish out of?
I don’t remember, sorry!
what rod weight are you using? and also does anyone know how strong fly line is? like the green/blue/orenge/yellow line
We used a combination of 8/9/10 weight rods. I’d recommend a ten based on my experiences. The line strength is quite strong, it’s more likely the leader that will be your breaking point. I used a 30lb leader.
@@JaySiemens have you ever wondered what pound test the colorful line is? cause i do all the time but what rod weight would you recommend for large carp
Broken Jay, yup, sounds about right ;)
💪
how does MAV have more subs than you?!?!
I think the lesson learned from this video is that orvis rods are overpriced junk
second one he broke was a Sage
@@hobocan22 I guess it was, looked like an orvis when I first watched
Haha, I think the lesson is don’t high stick your rod.
Nah.. seeing $50k+ skiffs stuck in the marsh at low tide a couple of times ought to tell you all you need to know. The gear you use is only as good as the person behind it
***A bull red drum is one over 27". There are 10lb bulls and 40lb bulls.
Yeah, I heard that too! Sounds like there are some varying definitions!
Capt. Rich lives in FL, now, I think. I think he got cancer, unfortunately.
What??? No BBQ No crawfish wth
Next time!
Breaking 2 rods has nothing to do with bad luck, just not knowing how to fish...
Bull Reds were on my Bucket list too....I was just there in November living the dream! Next time, I'll try fly fishing for them. Great video!!
Here's a link to our trip.

Awesome vid!
Why this dude wearing a life jacket in 2ft of water??????????
Few reasons, we travel through deeper water between fishing spots. Also, you can still get knocked unconscious and drown in 2ft of water. Just would rather stack the odds in my favor if a freak accident occurred on the water.
Not a great showing for Orvis🙄
