Hiya Joe. Been watching every review vid on the 128....yes I'm going to get one! I really like your review; only one to be objective, only one to mention economy and the losses due to 4 wheel drive, (why the performance is similar to 135i). I learnt more from you than any of the others....oh and no LOUD MUSIC! Thanks😎

Great video. I’ve had a 128ti since Dec 20 and the wife recently got her M235i GC.
Agree 100% - the 128 is far more engaging, more fun whereas the 235 is almost a little clinical in comparison.

Thanks Joe. Purchased one on the back of your initial review and Hamza's face on his video. Lack of test drives and covid has made this one an unknown in the line up. I've had a varied past history in cars, 4 pot petrol, diesel, v6 v8s and flat 6s. Manual would be preferable but despite people's opinions who never actually get to drive the cars, I love mine. It's not an M but its exactly what it was set out to be and more. Had it 3 weeks and worth every penny.

Just ordered one of these 2 days ago in Storm Bay with red detailing deleted, added every extra apart from 19" wheels and just managed to keep it under £40k. Was initially going for M135i but wanted the extras. But after watching your videos as well as mostly every other review on the 128ti I'm glad I went for this. Roll on February! Great videos by the way, I'm now a subscriber.

Just to update this post. ended up cancelling new order due to delivery time, chip shortage and spec being downgraded. Bought a 10 month old one at end of November with all the packs and in Storm Bay plus 19" 552M wheels. Brilliant car, absolutely love it and everything Joe says is spot on.

Finally a 128ti video! Thanks! I have a few questions:
Does it do lift off oversteering?
What can you say about the sound? Can it do little crackles?
How are the brakes? Is it stable under heavy braking?
What exactly do you dislike about the gearbox? I've driven this gearbox in a Mini JCW and I really enjoy it. It often predicts exactly what I was about to do. Only the paddles aren't as responsive as you'd like them to be.
Personally I wouldn't like a manual. A normal F40 diesel is already hard to control when accelerating fast out of a roundabout. Shifting and steering plus torque steer makes it hard to keep the car in a lane. Or maybe I just can't drive properly. 😂

    I haven't watched one for a while, but I enjoyed that. 👍
The next generation 1 series isn't on the same level as the previous. Especially from an engine and gearbox point of view.
It certainly gets things right with the technology and interior though.
Both, M135i and 128ti have their place in the market, and direct rivals with VW Golf R and GTI etc.
Having said all that, I will be sticking with my M235i for a long time to come! No way am I downgrading to a damn 2 litre! 😂😂
Keep the great content coming. 👍

Had a 128ti as a loaner while my F30 335d was having a recall done yesterday. Got to drive it about 80 miles or so and I was impressed on the whole. It was black with the red accents so looked a bit chavvy in my opinion (especially for a factory car), the interior doesn't look like it will take well to wear and tear with all that gloss black and some cheap feeling plastics, it had 19's so the ride was a tad harsh and the auto hill-hold is just bizzare. But despite that I really enjoyed it, plenty if power for road use and really nimble in the bends with loads of grip - that was with the Bridgestones on it too! It averaged 30mpg, we were obviously having some fun in it, but not amazing as it was mostly cruising; the one I had with options was just under £40k, an amount of money I wouldn't part with for it - but I'd say that about nearly any new car with modern prices. Though, I think it would be a good leasing option and it did leave me with a big grin, propper fun little car.
Best of all, normal indicators! But, the tick is very loud through the speakers and sounds like something you'd hear in a Peugeot 307 🤣

Hi, I've noticed this as I was deciding between a 2series GC with the 2l petrol (178bhp) and the 128ti. The funniest thing is that with the same spec, the 128ti works our cheaper than the GC. Makes it a no brainer :D

I optioned them off the new car I ordered then put them back on then cancelled the new car as a 10 month old one came up in my colour Storm Bay and it had all the extras plus the red bits. Got to say I love the red bits now as it catches every ones eye and they all assume it is a sporty version, especially those who know very little about cars. I think it would look too much like a 118i with the bodykit otherwise.

The best FWD 300+ bhp has to be the type r but it doesn’t achieve the mpg you got on the motorway and the looks are polarising. The new sport line version of the type r looks better than the original gt variant but this 128ti looks great! Solid video!👍🏻

Hey Joe, great review. The price increase may be due to BMW running out of the parts for the standard dials and screen. All 1 series come with the full digital dials and larger screen as standard right now, and they have upped the price as a result. Check the configurator. Some of us have been lucky by ordering earlier with the standard dials and now getting upgraded to the full digital dials for free. My dealer confirmed this to me last week.

Australian version gets the 120i engine not your higher power unit as it fits better in our range here - still a great car I think yet lots of competition in this class and X2 looks better I think 🤔

Just can’t get my head around the front of the current 1 series.. what would be excellent would the the front of the M2, and the rear of this 1 series.. you’ll see every selling their hot hatches to get this blend..

Great video Joe. By any chance did you note the tyre pressures? I’ve read a few folk say that the tyres are over inflated at 2.7 bar which makes the ride a little harsh.

I just got my nearly new m125i and that perhaps explains a bit - my fronts are 2.7ish and my rears are 2.3. What should they be?

I understand why BMW had to make this, and had to make the M135i.
I don't like either, but I understand why.
As a life long BMW fan, the hot hatch I most desire now, is the Merc A45s.
The M2C is the only BMW I desire, well that and the M5 which will never be in my budget.

Joe is the first person to accept a MINI with a BMW badge might not be a bad thing. I love that BMW is taking the fight to VW and Mercedes with a fun and hot compact and if they sold this in the US I'd buy it 100%

Financially, it's a bit of a bargain compared to it's competition right now - BMW offering very nice contributions and if you have something to part-ex (like I do with my 2016 Swift) you can probably squeeze it in under £300pcm. That's a lot of car for the money. Compare the interior quality to the likes of the new GTI, Megane RS or i30n and it's night and day. No silly rev limiter shenanigans too!

I oddly quite like these and prefer them to the new M135i; it seems to have a bit more sense of fun.
It looks like BMW have a car that can really take the fight to the Golf GTI. I’d have one of these over the Mk8 no question; it still has questionable looks like the Golf but has a far better interior and by all accounts is a very old car to drive.

I bought the new 35i and I have to say it looks way nicer in person and it drives like a dream and I know it has the same shell as the ti but the ti looks cheap and tacky especially with the red bits and ti written on the skirts. Either way why wouldn't you just buy the 35i ? Its pretty much the same price and looks way nicer. I had the previous shape 120i b48 engine pushing 320hp and if I was being completely honest I really prefer the new car, drive is completely different of course but all round I'd say new is the way forward.

I can't get my head around the loss of the 6cyl for a 4 I loved my 135 and 140 and drove my F80 and F87 with numerous 140's and they always left me thinking my cars aren't 30 to 42k better I don't think I'd have the same feeling with these new 1 series mini m cars.

They had to lose the 6 cylinder unfortunately because of emissions. But they didnt need to lose the rwd drivetrain. That's the shutter for me. But agree with you pal

Hyundai have yet to release their new 120N which is due out this summer with only manual availability. Could be a cheaper and more thrilling alternative??

    • @nta2267
      @nta2267 3 года назад

The i20N is a smaller car, maybe a competitor for the GR Yaris or Polo GTI. The i30N is a direct competitor to the Golf GTI, this BMW and the other FWD hatches. And as far as i know, it comes with a 8 speed DCT or a 6 speed manual transmission. The pre facelift version costs 32k € here in Romania, including discounts. 🤔 So yeah, it is cheaper.
