@@geografiainfinitului Old Romanians are probably the only people to preserve bread by baking big loaves to black charcoal on the outside at 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The surviving interior is totally healthy and edible and sterile like canned food, while the outer shell of burnt charcoal keeps the contents isolated and moisturized for potential years of shelf storage.

Baba Nastya is the embodiment of all that is good about humanity. Her faith, rooted in ancient beliefs which have transcended so many troublesome events over the centuries, keeps her mentally and physically strong as she goes about her life day to day, one scrumptious baked treat at a time... she needs no radio nor television to fill the ambient space around her, it is her ancient spiritual songs and poems, recalled from memory and set to the cadence of lovingly baking breadsweats for her neighbors, prepared in an oven that will never need a milliliter of gas nor a kilowatt of electricity, only routine maintenance such as sweeping clean the chimney. In times like these, when all too often differences are that which divides humanity, and worse, it is the strength of character of the baba Nastyas of the world to whom we ought look for reassurance, resilience, fortitude in times of trouble, and overall well-being.
Excellent video, Eli. You are a world embassador who makes national borders melt away, we all sit at baba Nastya's table and learn with you. Thank you to you, and to baba Nastya. Спасибо.🙏

If you watch the video again and look closely, you will see that although Baba Nastya's rustic little home has a wood burning oven and orthodox religious iconography, it also has electric lights, a satellite dish, a television, a telephone, and a refrigerator.

I absolutely love Old Believers. I am Russian Orthodox in the United States. There is a large community of Old Believers here, mainly in Alaska for historical reasons, prairie Canada, and also Pennsylvania for some reason. The city of Sitka, Alaska used to be called Novoarkhangelsk, and there are still Russian signs. In Erie, PA, there is a large Old Believer church, perhaps one of the largest in the Northeast. Small communities also exist in places like Saskatchewan and Alberta, where Old Believers have assimilated generally into Canadian and American lifestyle, but still retain traditonal and rustic lives at home, not too dissimilar to their Russian counterparts. They have a wonderful culture and I wish them well in growing their faith. ☦️

My mother's family settled in the Volga region at the invitation of Catherine the Great. They were German's, but I believe the life styles were very similar. Hard working, very religious, strong family ties, and my grandmother sang a lot. When guests visited then, the host family entertained with song and or musical instruments. This video gives me some idea of what life may have been for them. My grandparents immigrated to the U.S. in 1912. Lost contact with their family after the Revolution. Kitchens were main gathering areas. Advice from my grandmother, "If your kitchen is clean, your whole house looks clean." A big lightning ball of St. Elmo's Fire raced through the house during a severe storm when she was small. It affected her greatly. My grandmother never slept during a thunderstorm. You could hear her singing hymns, knitting in her room until the storm was over.

When Catherine left Germany to marry the Czar, her father was afraid she'd be lonely. He sent several thousand citizens to go with her. They settled along the Volga in the Czarista. My father's mother's family were Volga River Germans. Some of the Germans longed for home and attempted to migrate home. My paternal grandmother's parents made it to western Poland. In the mid 1800's they came to America.
I am proud of my Russian blood. (11% according to the DNA test I took.)

I am almost 70. The old, exquisite Othodox churches in Russia were exposed, abandoned and beginning to fall down when I was in high school. Like the church (remnant) shown here, beautiful wooden structures with paint wore off, open to the elements rain and snow, heat and cold, slowly deteriorating. I hope if there are any even left at this point, I hope Russia will begin to restore them, if only as a a memory if their history. Think the fm, Dr. Zhivago, but even more beautiful...

Lenin and Stalin despised the church and did everything they could to undermine it because it was a threat to their power. They expropriated many churches, turning them into community centers, libraries, and even barns for livestock. They destroyed others, including the largest church in Christendom, but that church has been rebuilt exactly as it was now.

God Bless the Grandma and yourself. I'm an old man from Texas, now 82. She reminds me of my Grandmother. She was born in 1875. I lived with her for a while when I was about 12. She lived a very simple life and was a person of great enduring faith in God. She ss a refuge from the American Civil War where after the war the Yankees, carpet baggers and scalawags stole everything and could not be considered as human beings they were so vile. My grandmother lived to be 98 and lived on the farm by herself until she was 96. Her husband, my Grandfather died when he was only 36 yo. My Mother was only 3 yo. Yet she took on the farm and raised her 5 kids by herself. She was the happiest person I ever knew.
Thank you for your website. It brings up so many good memories. The way your folks live is much like my family lived when I was young. And faith was the founding principle that knitted us and the community together.

Dude, the Civil War was 150 years ago, I'd hope you'd have a little more historical objectivity by now. The reconstruction advocates were doing what they could to provide rights and human dignity to emancipated slaves, which white Southerners aggressively fought against. That's not to say there weren't abuses and issues on both sides, just that it comes across as almost comedic to call Northerners "vile" as a blanket statement while not extending a single bad word to the literal slaveholders.

Seeing this lovely old lady, so full of love and vitality transported me back to my childhood when I went to stay on my Uncle and Aunt's farm where they lived a simple but wholesome life, even her honest hard-working hands were identical to my great aunties. So many happy memories. Thank you Eli for transporting me back to a very happy time.

The Lykovs in Siberia were so cut off for so long that when they were discovered in 1978, they didn't know there had been a second world war.

@@SvetlanaVoikova Good, you are being smart. I keep telling Eli that she needs to get away from Moscow and the other big cities. Ditto for fellow Americans. Nobody knows when the warmongers and profiteers are going to release their weapons, so being in the very rural areas is the best bet for everyone.

yes, but I do not live in a rural area, but in a metropolis, the capital of Siberia, Novosibirsk :) During the Second World War, the war also did not reach us, but our city produced weapons for the front. In general, of course, Siberia is huge - there are thousands of cities, villages and also a huge part of the forest that is still untouched by man.

@@SvetlanaVoikova With a population of 1.4 million and weapons production you would be a likely target. You need a cabin in the woods (and not where the wind blows fallout) something like 50 miles = 80km away. If you have a tunnel to hide in, for protection against the radioactive fallout, so much the better. The fallout radioactivity dies down to likely safe levels after two weeks, approximately. Best of all is to have a Geiger counter and survey meter so you can measure the danger levels.

Eli! People receive more valuable education from your videos than through main stream schools in the rest of the world. And this is sooo what the world needs right now. Not to lose the old ways, when people were connected to the Great Mother and lived in harmony with the seasons and all of life.
    Thank you for this!! 💟
