I love how in every video you explain safety issues that could occur when people try to imitate your modifications, teach how to correct them, and reveal the drawbacks of making such alterations. You really SHOULD be a spokesperson for Victorinox at this point.
Felix, I did this hack to my Ranger back when you first demonstrated it. I felt like I knew what you were going to reveal as the "secret" at the end of the video, because I discovered that problem with the chamfer myself. I use auger bits and spade bits as well as all the various Torx, Allen, and screwdriver bits, and as a result, I've found that many of the bits that have the locking grove cut into their shaft don't get much support. That under-cut in the shaft will line up with one of the support layers and that layer won't grip the hex shaft and you lose strength. The best solution that I came up with was to modify a small bit holder by cutting the shaft off and leaving just enough of it to reach all the way down through to the saw spring layer. I made the end very flat as you recommended in this video and I got rid of the under-cut by cutting it off. It does require carrying one more piece of kit, but it also gives you maximum strength with any bit. BTW, have you ever used auger bits instead of the spade bits? I feel like they take less effort. Thanks for making my Friday better, once again! Ciao!
this is the model knife i treated myself to on my holiday to Geneva when i visited the flagship store there. I was already going to do this modification but the other youtube videos were not great on how to do it. Now i feel super confident to do it. Thankyou so much Felix.
Flatten the chamfer ... GREAT TRICK! I watched this video even though I have already made this mod to my Ranger Grip 57. Boy am I glad I did!! After making the mod, I noticed, like you show, that the bit does not go *through* the liner lock layer because of the tiny protrusion of the saw spring. I also noticed that the bit wiggles a little, but I thought it was at least going *into* the liner lock layer. Now I realize that, because of the chamfer, it does not. Wow!! I can't wait to flatten the chamfer and have a much more robust tool. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I did not know about this! Now..the only Ranger I have is the one you sent me...so I won't attempt it just now....but definitely a good mod! Not just for bushcrafting purposes but(in my case) for taking apart knives and multitools. I carry small bits with me but always used a pair of small pliers. I feel that this would definitely make more sense! Great stuff my friend!
I loved this modification! Its hidden gem! I always use a bit driver but only for the small tasks. Im going to be getting a ranger grip soon so i am ver happy to see this😊
Dear Felix, how you inspire me to make better things! Every Friday I look forward to you, though it has to be evenings now since I was given clearance to join the helicopter emergency service, but a couple of SAKs always accompany me. You are so clever; artful, too. Thank you so much, as always, *Hugs* ~ Wendi 🌻🌻🌻
Dear Felix, thank you again for surprising me with "hidden" tools in Swiss Army Knives. I like the modifications you show - especially on my favorites, the 111mm Victorinox in the last weeks. Have a good start into the weekend. Greetings to Swizerland René
Oh, Felix, thank you so much for this video. Now I can point this out to anyone planning to do that modification. 🙂 And, apparently I'm learning patience on my old days. During the whole video, I had the urge, to write a comment about the 4th layer not supporting the tool, because of the chamfer. Luckily, I watched 'till the end first. 😀
Calculating the torque value of the combined thicknesses of the liners is intelligent. Removing the chamfer is also a smart idea. There are small sockets which use a 1/4 inch driver and I imagine that the 1/4 inch shank from a drill could be used as a socket driver . Bicycle tool etc. ?? Thanks once again for another intriguing engineering tutorial and all the best sent your way Felix.
Greetings Mr. Immler. I posted a video on this three months ago with a very easy way to open the hexagonal hole. It really takes only about 15 - 20 seconds and comes out very clean without any drilling or any filing. I made another video - basically a sequel - comparing the depths that each of three RangerGrips allow a bit to set in the handle of the knife. The Boatsman comes with the bit driver exposed. The RangerGrip 71 Gardner has the same amount of metal supporting the bit when the hole on the scale is opened. The RangerGrip 79 does not allow the bit to set as deep and has less metal supporting it. Basically, they all will work with a variety of bits as long as we don't over-torque them. I like to use mine with regular drill bits when the reamer is not adequate to get the exact size hole that I want. I only do light drill applications and don't really recommend any heavy-duty type work. Cheers. I saw another video creator do this mod. I love the idea but I knew you would have some more info. Thanks. Now I have confidence to blow up my warranty. Boom 💥. Boring holes is more important to me than any screw driver capabilities but still , a guy could need to use a screwdriver in the woods.
Hi Season's greetings Felix 😊, this is a great tip, I never knew the hex hole was already in the liners, and the shape in the inside of the handle made it easy to cut out. Thanks for another interesting video my friend, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart UK.
That is so excellent! That definitely makes a lot more options available in the backcountry. Thanks so much for giving a complete understanding of how this works and how to modify it so it works better. Have a great one, my friend!
Hello Felix. I have the Ranger with the Phillips screwdriver. This is a great mod to a very handy multi-tool. I really appreciate your attention to details. Thank you. Love this series. All the best.
And... 7 months after this video was published, the Victorinox Venture was released. It's interesting to see the correlation between these videos and the design of the venture. I appreciate the influence you have on Victorinox! I like the Ranger Grip knives, but I think they have two flaws. First, the only blade can't (and isn't) be sharpened closer to the pivot due to how the blade stop is designed. And second, there is no small blade similar to what the 91mm versions have. Because of this, I have to put more force into my cuts because the cutting edge is farther away from the handle. This modification makes this tool more useful, but the blade is annoying. Thank Felix for another great video!
Passt sofort ohne Nacharbeit. Liebe Grüße Thomas
Right at the point ! Very important to know, where the weak points are and eliminate them as much as possible. I'd go even a step further: all long tools like bit-holders, drills etc come with a groove near the end. It's ment as a breaking point when used with a power drill. When used with a hand tool, it's useless, so I'd cut it off (reduces lenght and weight too). With a very crisp 90° edge it may get fiddly to insert it, so I'd do a very small chamfer, but to get the full advantage of the 1,2mm layer, I'd open the saw, so the next layer (#5) will be the stop. Stay safe and enjoy Xmas time
Hi Felix, love your videos. The thumbnail reminded me of a mod/ adaptation I made. The hex bit holder from lidl reminded me of it. If you ever see the mixed washer sets in lidl the smallest split locking washer makes a great replacement ring for any swiss army knife. I have damaged a few standard split rings over the last few years. The smallest locking washer in the lidl set has a nice spring tension without being brittle. You can open it with 2 pliers to fit it to the knife and then the cut in it is ideal for creating a near seamless joint when you correct/ straighten the washer after fitting. It has enough spring to reset itself after being shock loaded without the joint opening and releasing the knife. Also the thickness of the wire (square profile) in the washer washer is a very good match to the hole in the frame piece.

What about mounting a Morakniv spare blade of Companion/2000 on a RangerGrip with a Thumbstud to 1 hand opening. Try using a Pencil Die Grinder and carbide burrs... because spare blades are very hard...
Dear Felix and everybody else, there is a really easy way to do the mod. You can do this mod just using one tool. With the Reamer you can easily drill a hole in the middle of the hex inlay and carve out along the edges, regularly trimming the rubber on the front with the small blade of a SAK. mine took less than 5 minutes

Hallo.

What do you want do with a fire log??
@@FelixImmler sorry, I should have said a rocket stove log

What about mounting a Morakniv spare blade of Companion/2000 on a RangerGrip with a Thumbstud to 1 hand opening. Try using a Pencil Die Grinder and carbide burrs... because spare blades are very hard...
Interesting idea!

Sehr interessant. Danke.
Danke für das Lob!
Great! Thank you!!!

@@FelixImmler Is true...Thanks!!!
