    I've just got this amp. It sounds a lot better than it does in this video.
    I'm going to have lots of fun with it I think. Home use.

    Don't waste time on the THR5A or THR10, just get the THR10C. Instead of focusing on built-in guitar effects, it focuses on amp simulation. Their boutique amp simulation is really nice. If you need additional effects just pair it with a Boss GT-1 or L.R.Baggs venue for acoustic stuff. ;)

      I owned th THR 10C for about 6 months and the amp simulation is pretty good but I sold it and got myself a blackstar id15tvp as I found it to get the exact amp sound I wanted plus it has a 4 way footswitch which the yamaha does not.
      All said, I am now in the market for a small acoustic amp to enhance my mandolin and the THR5a is on the top of my list.

    Let me guess…..You're a Yamaha dealer? Sounds nice. Nice little table-topper. I'm getting one. I'll surprise my wife. She's tired of getting her head blown off so she says…Just got a Martin OOO. Need to get a thin line pickup for it yet. Roland has a little amp out recently that I did check out sounding similar to this. I think you sold me on playing in the dark with that orange glow. Reminds me of my old '68 Marshall 50 watt head when the tubes would get nice and hot and glow orange. Good little review. Thanks.

      James, I'm not a dealer but just a regular customer in a lot of music shops, on the boards of 2 music associations and schools, and play in 4 bands. I decided to put reviews of guitars, pianos, amps and other accessories on my youtube channel to help the average interested potential musician to have the appropriate questions to ask when they go to a store and want to buy one. I end up answering more questions in music stores that I'm visiting than the sales people themselves can answer. So, these videos let me simply redirect people to the videos for their next visit to a music store.

      Doing a good job. Please continue. My wife said last time we were in a music store I made the salesman's head spin so you and I must be in the same boat kinda. Well, either way I liked the review and I'm getting one of these little things.My days of blowing out my eardrums are over and finger style on a Martin and a little amp (with reverb) is the way to go for me. Talk 2 u again. Thanx.

      ***** Thanks for the comment. I always tune guitars for doing videos. However, I've noticed in bringing my own guitars to this shop to give workshops on guitar sizes and wood combinations, that all my guitars go out of tune there. At home, I keep my guitars in their hardcases, and when I take them out and play them, they stay in tune. Yet, when I take them to this shop, I tune all of them, let them sit for 15-20 min, and they all consistently go out of tune about 1/4 step. It seems to be a humidity problem that I cannot resolve for the shop, and I've suggested several times the need for humidification devices for absorbing and diffusing moisture.
      When I play the acoustic guitars, and hear they are out of tune, I stop and retune it. If the person who was playing the electric guitar (you'll notice that the shirt sleeves are not the same when changing to the electric) couldn't hear that it was out of tune (I was camera-man at that point), then not much I can do to help that.

    Great little amp for any acoustic instrument, and more! Typical Yamaha quality.

    Great test.
    I guess if you bought an apple but wanted an orange you might have done the wrong thing.
    However if thought about it first and considered your needs, well then you might have bought the orange?
    For a neighbour friendly, small quality way to amplify my Yamaha Silent Nylon, well it's perfect.
    It probably wouldn't wouldn't make the nice chaps the local Death Metal band happy, but that's not what it's for.
    It's also a rubbish ladder, uncomfortable as a bicycle and can't cook breakfast.
    But for a neighbour friendly, small quality way of amplifying my Yamaha Silent Nylon, like I said, it's perfect.
    Just in case you need to know: Haters make me smile! But then most things do!

    Hi would this work to play a flute on it?

    • @jeffallenfrance
      @jeffallenfrance  2 года назад

      You could try with a clip-on mic and run it out to a standard 1/4 jack into the amp. I have never tried.

    Nice review! Thanks! Just wanted to ask, sincerely, this amp will do good for a silenced guitar like one of the Yamaha SGs, since they do not have a full body etc. Or if you wanted the USB recording ability. But other then that, is there a reason to use such a guitar dedicated small amp (that also has no voice input) for an regular body acoustic guitar? Is it much louder then the guitar itself? Will appreciate your opinion on this.

    How about starting with TWO MINUTES worth of 5-10 second segments of "guitar sounding though the amp", and then after a couple of minutes, talk about the settings all you want...

      Great amp! Demo sucks! It's doesn't have the natural guitar sound you'll get from a Fishman Loudbox artist or the Fender SFX- 2 channel. I totally agree with you.. This guy can talk all he wants about the features but it doesn't give any clear quality and natural sound coming from that amp.

  • @jimsteele2072

    I think this amp is fine for acoustic guitars, but the electric would sound better through a Pignose amp. Really. no slam on a Pignose either, they are great little battery powered amps for electric, I just cant understand why Yamaha would design this amp to have an electric setting, and then it sounds the way it does.

    • @jeffallenfrance
      @jeffallenfrance  9 лет назад

      +James Steele yes, it also surprised me too that Yamaha would make this acoustic amp with one electric guitar setting. There are 2 or 3 different Yamaha THR10 amp models which are primarily for electric guitars. This is a good small, compact (even battery-operated) amp. I have taken it along in a backpack with my Taylor GS mini (with ES-Go electronics) to small informal gigs and it is just right for small setting with do not need too much volume, but more than pure acoustic sound.

    • @modsurgeon
      @modsurgeon 8 лет назад

      +James Steele Some acoustics have actual electric string pickups, and it's nice to be able to get a little electric amp emulation without switching amps.

    Can you mic an acoustic guitar through this amp?

    • @jeffallenfrance
      @jeffallenfrance  Год назад

      Jerry, I do this in 2 different ways. I can put a microphone (usually a Shure 57) on a stand in front of the guitar and then add an XLR to TRS (standard jack) adapter at the end of the microphone XLR cable and put it into the jack input on the amp. Recently I also bought a lavalier microphone kit that is also made to work on acoustic guitars. The microphone head clips on to a clamp that is designed to be placed in the guitar rosetta. It has an XLR output which again needs an adapter plug to insert into the jack input on this amp. I don't use this amp to do this, as I have other amps and a mixing table, but you can do it. I have done it before in last-minute situations in restaurants.

      There are many new amps out there. Look at the Roland Cube EX which I believe has optional battery power.

      I don't understand why amps are still using standard batteries with the rechargeable technology today. A built in battery and multiple charging options would be far better.

    ....So...ideal for street busking....???

    • @jeffallenfrance
      @jeffallenfrance  6 лет назад

      No, this qmp is to small for street busking needs. It is 10w for acoustic, so it can saturate if set to highest volume. I use it for small contexts and a 60w for larger indoor and small outdoor events.

  • @drawlr55

    Too bad it doesn't have mic input.

    • @jeffallenfrance
      @jeffallenfrance  8 лет назад

      This amp is too small to use for a voice mic. 2 entries (once for jack and one for mic with XLR) usually are found on amps that start in the 30-60w range. This is a small home amp.

      Better would be putting the amp into the foreground as the main focus so that it's heard without the guitar and the camera could be on a stand and not change the mic loading effect by being moved.

    Talk to fast and don’t finish your sentences

    • @jeffallenfrance
      @jeffallenfrance  2 года назад

      Spontaneous speech is not called "sentences". Sentences are a written phenomenon that were invented with writing in the Middles Ages. Utterances in speech have however existed since the beginning. And massive amounts of speech data indicate that utterances do not need to contain accessory information. I know because I develop speech technologies and build speech databases with 1000s of participants per language.

      Some people get caught up with filler words in natural speech. It's a common occurrence in all databases of such types of unscripted natural utterances.
