9 years ago, I was 14. I was a freshman in high school. I had just really been introduced to the internet. My dad sat the family down to watch a funny video on RUclips: "Will it Taco?"
I remember cry laughing on the floor when they brought out the pine needles. Idk why but it was absolutely hilarious to me. That very concept of grown men eating pine needles stuffed dry into a taco shell started my love for GMM. 9 years holy cow. I watch this stuff while I make dinner and my roommates often say "omg i remember them!" Thank you, weird internet uncles and team. Thank you.
That’s awesome! I was a Mythical Beastie ever since I was 12 in middle school and was bored out of my mind and I found the internet thanks to these guys (R + L) I’ve been watching ever since. I’m now in college and they’ve been with me thru so many life transitions, no matter what happens, GMM will always be constant thing I can look forward to! ☺️

When I introduce people to Mythical, I show them the two "Will It Taco?"s. I might have to add this one.
This is the most midwest "when I was a kid I ate a pinecone in my grandma's back yard" energy I've seen since I was a kid in my grandma's back yard.
Wait you can get pinecones? I had no idea I always saw them as decorations but didn't think about eating them. I guess you learn something new every day
Having grown up in the Midwest, I can confirm this sentiment even if I've never partaken in such behavior myself.

In case anybody was curious, they are extremely dry and don’t really taste like much. I wouldn’t recommend eating them.

I assumed Nicole was making lamb tacos because lamb is often served with Mint Jelly and Pine is very similar to mint in flavor. It's very fresh and herbaceous.

I low key love this idea as a series, saving those old will-it episodes, during which many of us actually felt these could have been done much better with a little dressing up. It is also so great to see the different takes the chefs have of doing this!
Its funny to see this sentiment because the complaint I usually see is that once Josh came on the Will Its became too complicated. I'm on the newer side of a MB (started in 2018) so I personally agree with you.
If anyone, for reasons I can't possibly imagine, decides to make this recipe, I recommend doing it in the spring or early summer and only using the tips of the branches. That's where the new growth happens, and they will be reasonably tender and less likely to make Josh's worst nightmare happen to you in real life.
There's a whole world of pine recipes to make with these buds even! Like emmymade did a pine needle sprite which sounds fantastic, and in her video mentions some of the things people do with them
They are good raw too, I imagine there would be many dishes I'd like.
Agreed!! Spring/early summer spruce tips are an amazing citrus substitute. But only that new growth folks. Don't eat or use needles...not a good idea. I have made syrup, used in salsa, and paired with salmon.
@melissag.4317 pine tips are also good in the spring. Mature pine needles... not so much. Not ever.
Yeah, mature pine needles are mainly good for tea, you can extract a lot of vitamin c and flavor from them that way

I think(in my dumb opinion) that they should have an episode where an expert on native edible plants species of their area guide the mythical kitchen crew out camping (or just on a hike), to find ingredients that are TECHNICALLY edible and plants they usually wouldn't think about... And educational and all that 😂
... It was fun to see them super uncomfortable with an ingredient.

Ummm so Alexis Nikole, aka the black forager, may be down. She is from Ohio but goes out to CA because of a friend? Sister? Lives in CA, if I recall correctly.
And then they forage for ingredients and cook in the wild!
SortedFood did something like this. It was a great episode. I definitely think it would be awesome to see the mythical kitchen do it.

It does not surprise me that Chase is responsible. He just has that kind of energy, in a good way.
In Korean cuisine, it's traditional to steam songpyeon (sweet filled rice cakes) on a bed of pine needles, and they are an inseperable part of celebrating the Chuseok Fall holiday. Maybe if you try pine needles again, you can look to Korean cuisine for inspo.
I'm a bit surprised Josh didn't go Korean with this one, because he does so often. There's 솔잎차 and that 솔의눈 soda.

I'm not a neurologist, but my ADHD sees Josh's ADHD, and not being able to find things right in front of you is related to our brain's inability to sort input effectively. Like, most folks can ignore things around them and focus on what's relevant, but we really can't. Never change, Josh! ❤

Pine needle tea is super delish and has a ton of vitamin c! Mix it with some sassafras roots or syrup to make it sweeter. I bet it would make an excellent, earthy marinade.
Hilarious to me that Nicole was going for Christmas vibes and Chase specifically said Joshes was Christmas 😂
After watching this episode and hearing Josh say "did we go too far?" I want to see food fears brought back

Of all the things Josh has willingly gobbled down on Mythical channels, it's kind of funny to me what he was so hesitant about his own pine needle spice blend.
My sister lives in the Yukon (Canada) and they harvest spruce tips in the spring. They are soft and not prickly when you harvest early. She then freezes them and uses them in smoothies and to make a flavoured simple syrup. They are actually quite nice in smoothies, kind of like a healthier non-alcoholic gin and juice with the evergreen and fruit mixture. They are supposed to be really good for you too!
I wish more culinary arts in general took Indigenous cuisine more seriously. I remember being taught that First Nations Anishinaabe would eat some pineneedles, but more as a last resort when game was scarce

This has very little to do with the episode, but I love Chase's use of 'streets ahead' so casually (22:46)! Pierce knew what he was doing when he coined that phrase!!

I imagine after this episode the google analytics on "Can you eat pine needles" has gone through the roof. I guess since Rosemary is edible and fantastic it stand to reason, but I had always assumed Pine needles were inedible.
Look up can you eat a Christmas tree on RUclips.
I know dogs aren't supposed to eat pine needles because they're jabby which is not ideal for the intestines, but I know spruce beer is a thing (tastes how pinesol smells) so maybe it's the form that's the issue

I'd go for a Korean fusion taco here. A pine cheong used to glaze a protein, possibly mixed into a gochujang marinade. I'd use sliced pickled radish, ssamjang, and green onions to garnish? Maybe? I'm tempted to try it out, honestly.
As someone who drinks spruce beers and pine needle teas, and was taught as a child about foraging for edible pine needles in survival situations, I really enjoyed this.
Josh saying "I'm a human man!" gave me some real Pinnochio "I'm a real boy!" vibes. XD

There is a drink (somewhere in Europe) which is pine needles stored in vodka. Apparently a very nice menthol flavour.

Its weird to see a full "how its made" cooking process for PINE NEEDLE TACOS as if were gonna follow this and do it ourselves.
We eat spruce needles in Finland but only the first new sprouts in the spring. Can be used like a herb, a bit like rosemary or made in to a tea. But only the new spring sprouts.
