GMaj7 - F#m7 on loop is kind of how I'm hearing this. For me, it's almost this in-between world of Dmaj/Bmin and AMaj/F#min. Not sure where exactly the key is. But the song almost exclusively rests on the GMaj7, so maybe it doesn't really matter much either way. Really spot on with the dominant 7th analysis. We seem to be hopping around Maj7 and min7 chords, moving a key center that was never very defined to begin with. Really wonderful music. Also a huge fan of Isaiah. He is easily one of the best to ever do it. Great video, Michael!
Michael, have you listened to much Curtis Mayfield? He was a great guitarist in his own right and influenced Hendrix. Thanks for introducing me to Isiah; he’s great and I hear a lot of Curtis in him
Totally agree, finally got to see him play live with the Tony Toni Tone reunion tour in Louisville & was impressed with how much restraint he played with. For someone with that level of skill, but also understands that it’s about “what the song needs is what the song needs.” Had 2 play when I got back home 2 Cincy until 4am!!! It’s him, Judy Smith & the late great Spanky Alford that come from that particular planet.
I was at the Alternative Guitar Workshop last year and Isaiah was there. He won everyone over with his combination of soul , funk, R and B, Blues, jazz and rock. He can burn on jazz and many other styes, all with deep soul and feeling. He even said "it's all SOUL music" to him.
"Rigid sonic environments, if you will" - MP Whoa! I had never really looked at metal and other rock and roll tunes in such a way before. I guess having grown up with that style of music just didn't leave me with a lot of space to look at it in such a way before. But it's a brilliant way to describe the song structures and chord/voicing choices rockers often make. Absolutely love Sharkey and the band in this video. Thank you, MP, for always bringing us on these musical adventures to explore new players, songs, and styles. And thanks to your GG community for bringing this to your attention in the first place. Peace.
Hey Michael, I've just recently discovered your channel and I'm a big fan! Another guy who I was criminally late to the game on is a Canadian country artist named Corb Lund. His band is really tight, and he and his guitarist, Grant Siemens are both really talented players. The rhythm section are no slouches, either. Sean Burns is an absolute show-stealer on bass. I'd love to have you take a listen to them in a video. Keep up the great work!
Thanks to reacting to this, Michael! As you may have noticed, I had accidentally put this vid on Guitargate before I noticed my fellow member Christopher Taylor had already put it up. Great band and amazing front man. Really enjoyed your take on it. And a great New Year to you and your loved ones!
This guy is crazy talented. I saw him play with Chris "Daddy" Dave (who might be the best drummer on the planet btw) at Ronnie Scott's in London once and he is indeed mind blowingly good. He is an extremely accomplished jazz player but very versatile
Thanks, MP, for all that you do for this amazing community of musicians and music fans. Thanks for digging my pick; thought of you as soon as I saw it. However, folks really need to see Mr. Sharkey battling Cory Henry; there's just no way to do a reaction vid to this (ruclips.net/video/d3y_XMMZslM/видео.html). Happy New Year everyone!
"Musician" reacts to.... It's become commonplace. Everyone is doing it. But no one does it better hat MP. Insight and anaysis and explanation like no other.
Around minute 14 - the word you're looking for is masterful. He knows all the licks and jazz but its being used in an extremely contextual way that only a master can.
There is a video on RUclips from Eric Gales's last birthday party. Jubu AND Sharkey both play. It's a straight up clinic, BTW Eric made Sharkey play after Jubu
Didnt realize I was on my moms youtube account, but here we are. Theres an artist by the name of Benjamin Tod that released an album last year titled 'Songs I Swore I'd Never sing' and its exactly that. Each song is some of the best song writing I have heard in the past few years, but one you should for sure do a reaction to is 'Wyoming'. It is through and through the best song I heard last year.
I really enjoyed this analysis. Something about this song reminds me of Santana's "Transcendence" from *Moonflower*. The way it builds to a long solo and then quiets down, some harmonic similarity, even the use of phaser in the rhythm playing (just before the solo). It's definitely it's own tune, but "Transcendence" is one of my very favorite Santana tunes, so the connections just make me enjoy "Stay" even more. -Tom
Then that lift, lift, lift, intensity intensity, crescendo...denouement...then slowly, sweetly back down to ground!! Not the to be too blunt, but feel like I need a smoke after that...mm mm mmm.
I remember when you did the video about David Ryan Harris playing in a small bar with John Mayer and Sharkey and a few other incredible musicians. Stuck with me all this time how incredible a player he is. Always love seeing talented musicians getting the respect they deserve. I don't usually make song requests because I know you probably have a list a mile long. If you don't get the opportunity to do a video covering it, I would still check out Magnetar by Mark Lettieri. I think you've covered Snarky Puppy a few times and he does guitar work for them. I usually prefer this version: ruclips.net/video/NEOBjYT2tCA/видео.html It's live and he has his full band with him. Like I said, I would never expect this to be covered on the channel, but I just wanted to pay you back for all the incredible artists you've introduced me to. Hope the start of your new year is going well, and I hope this year brings good things for you channel. Always enjoy seeing your videos pop up in my notifications, it usually means I can add another song to my playlist haha.
Yo Michael! In case you didn't notice, Sharkey was the guitarist in the David Ryan Harris ft John Mayer video you reacted to. Cheers & let's hear some Prince soon!
Bro, his cover of "If I Had the World to Give" is the absolute best I've EVER heard. It is absolutely bonkers how good he is!!!!!!!!!!! That cover of his brought me to my fuckin knees it is so good!
Those of us that grew up on Ernie Isley luv this sound, and we're familiar with it. If l can not get my distortion tone like "Voyage to Atlantis" or "Livin in The Life's" solo section, then l skip that pedal/setting lol.
... this's that Simply Red, Comin Home To You, falsetto flyin' dood. This's also a very gr8 musical break down analysis, Like, GO GO & GO-BRO-!!! ... YO-!!! ...
Sharkey is incredible. Every time I think about learning his style, I chuckle and remind myself that I’m garbage. But it’s funny, because in some performances I’ve seen, I do hear him hitting the wrong notes by mistake. I think that’s probably just because he isn’t afraid of making mistakes though. Sign of a truly mature player.
regarding mistakes: a dancer friend told me "once is a mistake, twice is choreography" find that wrong note and lay into it, circle out into a brand new orbit
@@harryharris1619 thank you for the kind words. I don't disagree. In fact, I'm quite proud to be a guitarist, and I try not to take it for granted. Music is no competition, more of a "share-circle" LOL
@michaelpalmisanoI think if I want this style, RnB, I'm going with Ginuwine ,his 100% Ginuwine album has beautiful melody, without guitar solos. You said you weren't familiar with the genre ,more or less. I would say check out Aaliyah-self titled, its red cover is easy to spot. The whole album is great. Also, you should check out Ginuwine The Bachelor album, this album has crazy melodies, unbelievable . Personally, I have not listened to this style in a while, currently studying some tech death- Archspire, Infant Annihilator, my favorite musician and his band,Jonas Bryssling and Spawn of Possession. I started playing because of Yngwie, Jonas to me is Swedens best metal player.
I luv Sharkey... But please can we see you play M.. Play us an original. You're songs bro. Wanna see that spark that God put inside of you... Inside of your fingers. Stop teaching... And play. 😊 And Have fun doing it. It's time to come home spiritually... And feel what you been giving to so many people. It's time to take back what you give. Write us all a SONG. A real song... Saw Sharkey this past summer while he was on tour with John Mayer, put on an absolute masterclass on stage.
Channeling that ISLEY LOVE!!! Great find! That’s why I love this channel!!
As always- I LOVE seeing your emotion/expression/passion Michael. ❤️🔥

Curtis greatly influenced my brother.
Still my favorite music channel on RUclips. What a groove, thanks for sharing.
I always knew he amazing on guitar from touring with John Mayer, but would not have guessed he had such a great voice. WOW.
Can hear that style music any Sunday morning around here at most AME Zion churches. Probably where those folks learned it. Love it!
Say it again for the folks in the cheap seats…….!!!!!

Yes, Isaiah is a master!
The flanger and phrasing used on the solo have serious "Gilmour" vibes. Killer track!
Defo some gilmour vibes there, defo some prince vibes too in the soloing
Yes, gives me heavy Robert Fripp vibes
This was mostly an Ernie Isley vibe! Check out the Isley Brothers starting at the 3×3 album. Enjoy!
Really special. Thanks MP
Damn! Their vocals are floating silk with all instruments gliding beneath with lift. Feel like I'm up there freeriding above!!! Bea-u-ti-ful mmmmm.

I've seen many Sharkey videos but not this performance. THEY NAILED IT. thanks for sharing it. SHARKEY IS A Beast
It’s feel bro it’s in our indigenous nature we play with emotion

Thirdstory - Over when we said goodbye (mahogany session) is a beautiful song. The way they sync together is heavenly
Saw him perform this live a few months ago with Robert Glasper. He literally stole the whole show. It was amazing.
This cat reminds me so much of Prince (RIP!). The vocal, the groove, the chops!
Amazing guitarist and great guy! My brother and I spoke to him after a show for about 45 minutes, such a dude.
Yes, he's good . I didn''t know him so looked some of his music up on spotify. Listen to Love is the key and it's Marvin Gaye all over.....

this was a great song and great musicians
That left field Gm7 to Cm feels lifted right out of the chorus of "Can't Hide Love" by Earth Wind and Fire, a tune that Sharkey covers often!
Absolutely one of the best guitarist alive right now
That look at 1:01 when he starts the song 🔥
I really enjoyed this session.
Isaac and band really can be a jam band like the old days. Jam music needs to come back IMO.
What do you think?
I saw Isaiah at a recording session when he was 18 or 19. I knew he'd be one of the greatest musicians of his generation...I was right.
Thanks for sharing..

Can anyone write down the chords when Isaish solos? So I can make a backing track. THx
At around 13:00 he’s doing “jazz/neo soul”+ Prince it’s fantastic
I was disappointed that you didn't attempt to disect Sharkey's hotel cafe solo, please make it happen!!
Michael, have you reached out to him about doing a live podcast/interview? He has a new album coming out. Release date?
Can you do another one from Band-Maid From Now On another instrumental.

Incredible performance! Next you should react to Polyphia new song Bloodbath featuring Chino from Deftones. The solo is phenomenal.
ima need what ever pedal hes using for that solo cause god damn
wtf I had no clue he had such a good voice too
Curtis mayfield +Ernie Isley+ spanky Alford +himself = what your hearing

He looks and sounds like Raphael Saadiq. That's a compliment.
Nice to expose Isaiah. I recently told him he is my favorite musician that no one has heard of. Hopefully, this video helps with that.
Check out Eric gales
This Man needs to listen to some agape jerry. Fr Fr
@michaelpalmisano Are you familiar with Timbalands work, maybe his work with Nelly Furtado?
I’m pretty sure isaiah use to play lead for Brian McKnight and others
who was the drummer?
He is the best guitarist I have seen, the combination of feel and this level of technical ability is rare
Check out the Isley Brothers...That's the source of this style.
That tone on the extended lead solo starting around 4:40! Who needs a tremolo bar when you can bend like that?

Some might find this strange, but to me Sharkey's soloing style is very reminiscent of Frank Zappa in certain ways.

Why couldn’t you have three major sevens to include the one, four and five. I do that all the time but maybe that’s why am I playing sounds like crap.
He is talking about diatonic harmony, where the V chord would be dominant and have a flattened (minor) seventh
That’s why rock music is amateur music there is no finesse in it it’s listening to each other and complementing each other rock music is full of ego
