Close one. Perhaps a box cut rather than the standard (over/under). And brother, if you have one, a pole saw is never a bad option for the backcut. Glad it came down safely though! ✌🏽
Basically it was a beginning of a removal but just slowly taking sections off at different times. The tops of the tree were almost completely decayed and the roots started to show signs of damage and decay as well. The tree is removed now though
Why would they ever want to cut that limb? We create a little structural support with guy wires and things like statues, bbq’s, cellars, fire pits, pizza ovens, decks, treehouses, etc. that limb was only making the tree thicker and it is old enough, it would be touching the ground at the ends eventually. I bet that tree was beautiful before. 😥 Edit: Also, please take the advice of some other people here in the comments. That was extremely dangerous for you and those standing far too close. Board certification is a thing, and they have fairly strict guidelines.

Next time I would go a little further out so the branch don’t fall to the tips and springboard into you or the tree just saying 😅
If you go further out you can't reach it....just sayin'....
Great camera angle... what's he doing!?
That's not how you trigger cut a limb my friend that could have hurt you
You seriously think he didn't figure that out already?....
We don't know if this was the beginning of the removal of the whole tree or not, but if this was a "pruning", that cut will be the death of the tree.

Timber hitch your an idiot...the prune cut is always after a branch is removed in the first place
