Johnathan, came back to review your tools, techniques and inspiration, Springtime is here so I can move outdoors and power carve . Next on my agenda! Thanks!
Hi Carl, thank you! the tools i used for this are ; Graff speed cutter, flap discs - 40 - 120 grit. the saburrtooth 4" carving disc, ( the yellow one is the smoothest grade). the sponges i used for sanding are called interface sanding pads. commonly used in car polishing, i use both 4" and 2" pads. the final tool was the arbortech contour sander, quite pricey but they work very well. hope that answered your question and thanks for watching
Hello mate. Just wondering. Will I still achieve the same results if I skip the flap disk and and just the sanding with a 40grit and all the way up useing normal sanding disks on the backing pad.
@@carllove7353 yes you will, the flap discs are just more aggressive and longer lasting. you dont need to use them. regular 40 grit hook and loop will be fine, you will just go through more of them. another great thing to get if you dont already have one is a rubber block to clean off the sandpaper as you use it. it removes all the clogged sawdust from the sandpaper really increasing the life of each sheet. you can get them at toolstation or screwfix
Back again! LOL! Had questions about getting a clean smooth surface. Soft pads and lots of sanding! Working outside next to shop. Trying to figure out how I might do this in my shop when it's winter in MN?
Hi Elizabeth, at this stage, I give the piece a very light burn. This helps to show and spots where I need to concentrate sanding on and also dries out the top few layers to make sanding easier. It can also add a little more colour contrast in the wood. The trick is to apply the flame very lightly, just so the wood starts to turn colour but not enough to burn. The areas that darken the most need the most sanding for the best effect. I hope that helps and feel free to message me if you have more questions
Thank you, How about starting debuting with Bayerwald Woodcarver Pro Set | Milling Disc for Angle Grinder and then go to Kutzall Genuine Dish Wheel - Fine Tungsten Carbide Coating or go to Kutzal l Extreme Dish Wheel - Medium Tungsten Carbide Coating
Wow !!! they look amazing once stained and finished . GREAT video thanks a lot for sharing. Deffinatly gonna be trying this at some point. Do you have links to the sanding attachments used ?? .
R2the B the is for the great comment, I don't have the links but i used the arbortech contour sander, and some foam backing sander pads. Any kind of sponge will do. Check out.stores that have car polishing gear and best of.luck
The kutzall or saburr discs are perfect. They fit on an angle grinder and are very good at creating different contour shapes. Or you can just use 40 grit, flap sander discs, they also remove alot of material. The hardest and most time consuming part is the final sanding. That cam take a few hours but definitely worth it. As for the design, study a few pictures of sand dunes or water and then draw the pattern on. Make your lines the high point and remove everything in-between to make gentle curves. Best of.luck with it and don't hesitate to ask any questions
Looking around for variable speed grinder. Is the titan a 7 inch? Looked at 4 inch grinders variable speed but no low to medium available or discontinued?
The one i have is a Makita, not sure on the model make, will check for you tomorrow. I highly recomend a variable speed, you will be able to use it in so many more ways. Most fixed speed angle grinders use to high an Rpm for good sanding and polishing. They will literally just through the pad off
Ok the titan I had died on me and I replaced it with a Makita GA5040 C . Been using this one well ober a year and very happy with. Takes the 4.5 inch discs
Yes definetly. Largest commission i have done is nine boards about 6 feet across. But the technical would be the same across a wall. Maybe scaffolding planks? Alot of sanding though!
I generally use 8 x 2 inch board, the length depends on what the customer wants. If they want a larger piece, I will join the 8 x 2s together and cut to suit
Got a variable speed Makita per your advice. Had to return and replace. Going to do some more practice. Looking at end of video. Foam pads under sandpaper. hmmm! Thanks again! See you on Instagram.
@@JohnathonWhittaker Have replaced it as the bearings in my first one were sloppy or ungreased. Can tell from rattling sound. New one sounds and feels great.

I can well imagine!
Absolutely amazing. Could you possibly give me a list of the attachments used for this piece on the grinder

A really good extraction system and a good respirator
I do it in my workshop throughout winter but it's not -200 in england

Great stuff.
Yes, i have done quite a few of these for clients, if you send me an email or find me on Instagram, I can send you some finished images
