    Beautiful!! thanks for idea, I've been looking for big pieces of something better than pine to do something similar, but with the paint even pine looks awesome!

      @user-jr7rx9fg6c hard wood definitely gives a different look, it does raise costs considerably though so its good to know your client base. Working on pine though is a great way to practice techniques and styles. Give it a try and I hope your succesful with it. If you look at my Instagram, you will see a whole lot.more examples

    I love the wood the sculpting was great. I didn't notice anything wrong with the area you pointed out..lol. I am a painter and wood worker and I always see something no one else notices. I think it looks unfinished just with the 2 x 4 s. Did it sell?

    • @JohnathonWhittaker

      Hi there, thank you and yes this sold, was actually a commission. the 2x4s are merely there to keep it in position for carving and painting. once done, they are generally wall mounted

    I’ve started carving house number signs free hand with a router. But this project of yours has really got me interested in trying something more artistic in style.
    Also, we live near the ocean so I really appreciate this piece. Waves can be very inspiring as well as soothing. Great work Jonathan 👍👍

      Thanks for the comments, these are alot of fun and very therapeutic to carve! I often use Google earth images for inspiration! Next evolution of this will be laminating the boards together to get a deeper and thicker wave profile.

    Great creation. What do you do, if anything, to the side bits?

    • @JohnathonWhittaker
      @JohnathonWhittaker  4 года назад

      Thankyou for your comments, the finish on the sides generally depends on the colour or stain on the face. If i do a natural wood finish, its the same on the sides. If i add colour, like in this video, i do the sides and back in black. Helps show the colour more. Thanks for watching!

    • @JohnathonWhittaker
      @JohnathonWhittaker  2 года назад +1

      I generally sell wall art sculptures like this for around £100 per board, depending on their complexity and finish

    What is that blue stuff?

    • @JohnathonWhittaker
      @JohnathonWhittaker  3 года назад

      I used acrylic paint, royal blue, turquoise, cerulean blue. Just very light coats, gentle sand in between and a shellac finish

    the ends of the panels why not treated?

    • @JohnathonWhittaker
      @JohnathonWhittaker  5 лет назад

      The back and sides were eventually painted black. At the time of filming this was what the client had asked for . But I do recomend that the all sides get sealed . If only to prevent moisture from entering. Thanks for watching!

    I'd put clear perspex on the back to hold it together, rather than the wood. My 2 cents

    • @JohnathonWhittaker
      @JohnathonWhittaker  6 лет назад

      the wood straps on these are generally just while it is being carved and shipped. they are generally removed and each piece hung separately , nice idea though. will keep it in mind
