Love it Johnathon, I was looking the other day on instagram at your progress so beautiful. I'll give it a go need to get a few attachments for my new grinders.
you can do pretty much all of it with flap discs, although a carver addition to the angle grinder would speed it up. I used a lot of tools on this one more to experiment than for necessity.
The donut style discs are from saburrtooth. The kutzall ones work really well too. I use the 4 inch ones on the angle grinder. Here is a link but there are lots of places to get them. www.axminster.co.uk/saburr-tooth-carbide-discs-100mm-4-ax931328 the arbortech turbo plane in a handy one as well. IPad survived! Just had to replace the screen thankfully!
Hi there, I used screws in the back to hold the boards in place. I make sure not to put them more than 50% of the depth of the wood and also try to design it so the screws will be in the deepest parts of the wood. Another way I do it is to use hot glue from a glue gun. That also works well. Thanks for watching!
Hey Johnathon, thanks so much for the video! What kind of wood is that? Also, it seemed like the angle grinder gave you a better result than the chainsaw, but wanted your input. I'm newer to carving and trying to learn as I go. Thanks again!
Hi Mike, chainsaw or an angle grinder both work great. I like to use the chainsaw to start as it's fast and quite safe. The angle grinder is a great tool and takes lots of accessories but is a more dangerous tool. Doesn't have a brake and does tend to kickback sometimes. If you do go for the angle grinder, get one that has a variable speed dial so you can also use it for fine sanding. I have a few other videos on my channel showing the different blades and sanding pads that I use. Thanks for watching! Oh your other question, the wood is regular pine, easy to shape and takes colour and stain well
Hey first timer both seeing ur videos and trying my hand at power carving...... but am desperately trying to find your Velcro glove...... where in the world can I get one????
HEY, YOU GOT ANOTHER VIDEO UP! I'm thinking that this was a lot lest stress on you as you could stand it up and work at eye level. The turbo tech cutter ? how many hours service do you expect? Can it be sharpened? Gonna send my sister in law your way. She likes the power carving stuff. Had my shop roof redone and some family emergencies as well as day work. LOL! Be back in the grove or contour soon. LOL! Keep pushing!
Thanks bud, the arbortech turbo planes are Good, three blades it that can be sharpened. I have had this one now for.about two years and it still seems good
Hi Andrew and thanks for your comment. Generally I work with each client and draw out the patterns that they request, I try and make it personal to them. If they have a favorite beach scene, water scene, I try and recreate it. And the beauty of drifting sand and waves is that they tend to be all beautifully random. Makes each one unique. Thanks for checking out the video!
Hi Stephen, thanks for that and your right. I normally wear a respirator when I am sanding, not so much when I use the chainsaw or power plane though and these things are 90 percent sanding!
Thank you Eric, I have tried the chainsaw discs before but find them a little to aggressive for me. I tend to stick with regular chainsaws and other angle grinder discs. I can see how they would be very useful carving bowls though!
@@JohnathonWhittaker the key to the chainsaw discs is to go lightly and get the feel and the hang of it. I recommend an 11 amp grinder with a paddle switch. That way if it gets away, it shuts off. I had a mishap when I first started using one. Luckily I wasn't hurt but I did learn real quick what not to do. Some of them can be expensive but I picked up the Warrior brand from Harbor Freight. And oof course, they do need sharpening after a while.
@@ericjohnson2543 i use a paddle switch and a step plate. If I move my foot off the plate it cuts power immediately. Nice little safety feature, just in case

Turned out beautifully. I wish you creative inspiration for new works.
thank you!
3 years later still looking for guidance. Thanks!
Awesome accomplishment 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you very much
Nice work. I mainly turn but have some burls that will need power carving or there will be nothing left. Always fun to try something new.
Thank you
really nice project mate. Thanks for sharing
Your welcome! I try and add a new project every two weeks or so

Hey , hope you got an Ipad fix!
Fortunately it was just the screen and got it replaced for around $45! Will be more careful next time!
Will you be using a torch on this piece?
Yes bud, used a torch and have been colouring it per client request. Will post some.pics soon

How did you attach the boards to the two by fours while you were carving it?

Hi George, the velcro glove i used is made by a Canadian company called Sandi Hands. Where are you based? I might be able to find a link for you

Nice work. Sorry about your iPad.
its lasted about 11 years, think it deserves a break ( no pun intended:))
Sorry that was expensive, hope you have insurance!
Ya that was unfortunate! It's off to the iPad doctor to see if it can be saved

Fortunately it only cost £35 to replace the glass. Worth it in the end!
