For me, this was simply one of the greatest and most subtly depicted fictional love stories I have ever seen. Great, because it avoids cliche and shows love in its purest form.
As every other character close to Ji-An and Dong-Hoon observes during the series (including the grandma and Dong Hoon’s own wife), theirs is a special and precious connection. It is beyond words and conventional descriptions.
Soul mates? Yes, but clearly more than that I think. This was ultimately an intensely beautiful romantic love between a man and a woman. Admittedly, its overt expression was repressed due to the age gap, the conservative nature of Korean society and Dong Hoon’s own admirable care for doing the right thing by Ji-An. But it was that repression and need, especially by Dong Hoon, to observe social boundaries, that ultimately gave it its dramatic power, in my view.
Ever the stoic and the man who put duty before temptation, Dong Hoon is liberated only in the last episode. As you mention, the production suggests as much in the transformed light and tone and his own almost beatific smile. While not said openly, it seems clear his marriage is finally over. As for Ji-An, she is no longer the lost and desperate fringe-dweller dependent on him. They now meet as equals. And the look of unrestrained happiness on Dong Hoon’s face upon seeing her again tells you a real adult relationship is possible. She has a new self-respect and remains as drawn to him as she always was, but now from an equal standing.
I recalled what I see as the most penetrating observation of Dong Hoon in the entire series. It was during his visit to his Buddhist monk friend. The wise monk urges him to stop living for everybody else and seek out his own happiness. After that, Dong Hoon’s grim, perpetually self-restrained stoicism starts to crack. The breakdown scene in episode 16 is when the edifice finally collapses. And, no, I don’t think the tears were for his estranged wife. That marriage had been dead for some time. The tears were for the loss of Ji-An, the person who saved his life (by his own admission) and who had understood him more than anyone else in his life. This is why their chance meeting was so beautiful and so full of possibility.
This was an impeccably written, sensitively directed, exquisitely acted TV drama. It’s certainly the best Korean drama I’ve seen - full of intensely moving and life-affirming insights into the power of love, human connection, community and the nature of happiness.
Finally, a special shoutout to the sound direction and music score. On watching this closely for a second time, I observed that so much of the sheer emotional punch of the key scenes derives from the soundscape, the incidental score and the big set piece songs.
POSTSCRIPT: The sudden death late last year of Lee Sun-Kyung, who played Dong Hoon, was such a tragedy. He was a nuanced, selfless and brilliant actor. More than anything, in my view, it was his on-screen chemistry and unspoken dance of the soul with the beautiful and charismatic IU that made My Mister such an unforgettable experience

    When Donghoon cried, I cried too. It was a scene where Donghoon probably felt empty and released all his suppressed emotions together. It was a moment of catharsis. I remember that in the first episode, Kihoon said that Donghoon is a pity because he always chooses conscience over desire. After all the episodes, Donghoon overcame himself and became a new person, independent, mature, but still warm-hearted. It is the same with Jian. She overcame all the ordeals and became a new person just like Donghoon. A happy ending that urges us to wait for a sequential. Thank you so much Stephen. I really enjoyed your reviews and learned a lot from your insights. I hope you will do more reviews of this drama from different angles, as other fans most probably will look forward to.     I feel the same. You know we can clearly see he loves jieun more than a colleague.The age gap between them, social status and for his son also he has to give up his feelings. But in the goodbye scene he never even shed a single tear and try to hold all along like this is the right thing to do. In the end when everything is over and he has to accept that she’s really gone. Sometimes even though you know this is the right thing to do, we cannot lie what we really feel in our heart and it’s gonna break you down at one point. I think it is what the director want to show us. {Sorry for my bad english 😢}

When u have gone thru a lot, u tend to release all your emotions when you"re alone esp. men. He knows his marriage is over and accepted it when the wife cheated. And he was all along in love with Ji yan but kept his distance since he was still married. The meeting scene meant they are going to rekindle the friendship since they both knew they care for each other. His happy disposition meant he is at peace with himself and can date freely bec it is implied in the scene that he is divorced or will be divorced. soon.

Great scenes. Reckon he had his breakdown because of the situation he was in and being alone in that apartment. The person who had helped him the most was now gone and he was left with the realisation that his marriage was over. Being someone who always thought of others, that lonely apartment was probably the catalyst. The final scene was a major favourite. After the dreary colors of the previous episodes, it was almost like a new life for the characters with everything so bright and colorful. The handshake was a great move. At 16:05 it showed that he was holding her hand so tightly that it left an imprint on her hand. It was only a few frames but it really encapsulated how much he felt about her.

It was a lonely apartment, wasn't it? And you're right, Dong Hoon always thought of others, and he always was *with* others throughout the show. He was alone now in Ep 16, feeling lonely, getting back in touch with himself and what he wanted. And in the ending scene he was alone but confident. And yes, the imprints on her hand - that doesn't happen every day when you shake hands with people. 😀

Thanks for all that’s already been said about the final scene’s lighting, handshake duration, character growth, etc. I want to add that any analysis of an ending should consider the entire context of a given fictional world. Therefore, some receipts:
--Episode one, minute 19: Dong Hoon says an ajusshi revenge fantasy will be successful only if there’s a woman. So how can this drama be satisfying if we're to believe that Dong Hoon ends up completely alone?
--Episode ten, 1 hour and 10 minutes: the restaurant friend says that divorce is inevitable after an affair.
--Episode sixteen, 1 hour and 10 minutes: Yoon Hee (who doesn’t drink much) calls Dong Hoon and asks for beer, when she has never asked him to buy anything previously. Look at her expression. Plus we know from the beginning of episode twelve how unhappy she has been. She knows how Dong Hoon feels (about her and also about Ji An) so I think it's extremely realistic that she'd want a divorce.
--Final scene: using the basic logic of human emotion, why would Dong Hoon smile (he who never smiles) if he were still married? Wouldn’t meeting Ji An be painful if he weren’t free?
In sum, I think the ending was left "open" in order to mollify puritanical viewers. But the ENTIRE PREMISE of this story is that Dong Hoon and Ji An should live happily and find peace. And honestly, doesn't the final voice over sound like pillow talk?

    • @JWPanimation

Yep that final bit of dialogue really seems to be the feather that tips the scales IMHO. It implies a future conversation between the two, either spiritually or physically. My take is that they are soul mates who have finally found one another.

"Final scene: using the basic logic of human emotion, why would Dong Hoon smile (he who never smiles) if he were still married? Wouldn’t meeting Ji An be painful if he weren’t free?" This is a great insight, that given the signs of restraint (but also deep love) we've seen in Dong Hoon toward Ji An previously, that the restraint would still be there upon this meeting in the final scene if he weren't free.
"But the ENTIRE PREMISE of this story is that Dong Hoon and Ji An should live happily and find peace." Beautifully said!

    • @fw3765
      @fw3765 2 года назад +14

@@JWPanimation and @Marla Jea: This is going to be detailed but that's what we're all here for, right? 😀 I mentioned this elsewhere but will condense it here: I read that in Korea, if a divorce is mutually agreed upon then the couple can proceed. However, if it's a "disputed divorce" then a trial is needed. And - important point - if you are the cheating spouse, you are not allowed to take your spouse to trial. It has to be the scorned spouse that files for a divorce in that case. There are a few sites out there that explain this, but that's the gist. (Hopefully a native Korean can correct me if I'm wrong!) My understanding is that DH would have to agree to a divorce or take YH to court; she could never free herself unless DH agreed. I think this plays into the story, because in the end it would still have to be DH saying "Yes, let's divorce, let's take that step." He would HAVE to decisively act. As Yoon Hee said in the beginning of Ep 12 and in the beginning of Ep 15, she was always ready to do what DH wanted her to do, whether to stay with him for the sake of his family OR break up. Her deferring to him makes sense if we think that she wasn't able to file for divorce without him.
So I believe Dong Hoon finally spoke up and freed both of them in the end. Also, one other thing crossed my mind with the final scene: I don't think he would have naturally, comfortably called Yoon Hee "ae omma" if they were still married-but-separated. If they were still married-but-separated, knowing him he would've called her "chib saram" until he died. 😀The fact that "ae omma" rolls off his tongue in the coffee shop while talking to an acquaintance means that it's been a while since he started calling Yoon Hee that. Which, to me, means they're divorced....and have been for a while. Cue the huge smiles he had for Ji An, and the open lingering stares while he was talking with her and while she walked away. 🥰

I agree with your interpretations of these particular scenes, especially since I’m a shipper of Dong Hoon and Lee Ji An and my mind is always looking for any details that connect them 😅. His breakdown scene is because of her. The meticulous director placed the scene of him and Ki Hoon beforehand to demonstrate that Lee Ji An is the reason he’s inundated with emotion. She was the person who helped him breathe and who understood him, basically the love of his life…lol, so to not have her in his life is devastating.

I'd like to remind you a kind of 'visual' connection between the end and the beggining of the drama; between the last scene of the last episode, in which she looks back behind Dong Hoon, and the very last frame of the first episode, in which she looks back while Dong Hoon was forced by the security to get in the elevator. The striking difference between these same gestures of looking back (her shining, happy look at the end VS. the dark, peaceless look at the beginning), i think, is a very impressive and subtle way to express Ji An's whole journey from her frustrated, hard life to a more peaceful and happy rebirth.

The chance encounter between Dong Hoon and Ji An to complete My Mister is magical, from the onset when Ji An hears the voice she had become so intimate with, to the camera as it follows her over the shoulder to reveal a reborn young woman, standing in the beautiful sunlight and finishing with a handshake that is anything but. It's wonderful that Ji An, the mentor, has seen her student Dong Hoon become so happy. BUT WAIT, you may be thinking, PD is obviously the mentor here. Hear me out though as I make my case. I think the Writer, Park Hae Young is brilliantly flipping the obvious roles of mentor\ mentee here in ways that on the surface appear one way but in actuality are reversed.
As souls go, Ji An has declared herself to be the elder by at least 30000 years. She’s world weary and wise but has forgotten her humanity. She’s tasked with destroying an innocent, and Dong Hoon though older, is naively and idealistically hanging on to a job and marriage that he is clueless about. Ji An at first seems to take delight in destroying his life, but the one ember of her humanity left, her grandmother, is blown back into life by PDH. When she tells him about the photo booth, she’s making a conscious decision to reveal to him the truth about what’s happening in his life. She’s the master here, a manipulator who sees every angle and is in control. But, Dong Hoon’s goodness and spirit begin to remind her of what she has lost. She’s the prime force for change in Dong Hoon’s life for good or ill. Dong Hoon though moral is stuck, he’s unable to move and his structure is starting to crack. Ji An wakes Dong Hoon up and when he begins to run towards her finally starts to make a change in his life. It is Ji An who has shown Dong Hoon the truth, initially she is the teacher. Dong Hoon acknowledges this to her when he says, “thank you, I was on the verge of death but you saved me”. Is this something the mentor says to the student? The title of the drama says it all “My Mister” or in Korean “My Ajusshi”, it’s not ‘My Anjuin” (My Mistress). Yes, in this process the student teaches the teacher, and this is what happens to Ji An as she wakes up to her humanity. By making the decision to save Dong Hoon she saves herself and he can finally ask her “Have you found comfort?”

Wow, such good thoughts about Ji An being the mentor and teacher to Dong Hoon! Dong Hoon does come across as naive and idealistic, but he doesn't know what to do about office politics and his marriage except to ignore them and try to stay under the radar. You're right, JA opens his eyes to grander things and watches over him. But she teaches him heart and life lessons. Love this post. 👍

I am with you on this one in pointing out the often underestimated rmentor role she plays for him ...riffing on that: I'd personally add my impression that they're beautifully balanced in their relationship....to my mind he is her mentor too in obvious ways...but what I am left with is the conviction that the drama shows that they have the basis for a deep real-world loving relationship that defies conventions and societal expectations .i actually think that's one of the themes that this drama explores and chooses a side on...a theme that's mirrored by ki hoon and yoora ...i think where yoora and kihoon have failed for now...DH and JA can succeed..i think it's challenging us to accept actual love and attraction whether it fits into conventions or not.what do you think 🤔?

Here it is! Oh so emotional being possibly the last one for My Mister! I just wished to comment on these scenes, even though I am pretty much in agreement with your views.
For the first scene, I had first thought that the breakdown was caused by this culmination of the series' events. More that he had lost his marraige, the realization that he did not love his job, and that he had lost Ji-an as a continued friend. While I feel these events play a role, my view shifted on my second viewing. Instead, the tears are for Ji-an specifically and the realization that he loves and misses her. Setting aside the complications of age difference and all that happened in the series, he just simply acknowledges the true emotions that are there - and then - after that release, that's what helped him set the other events straight - that leaving his marriage was best, leaving his job was best - those tears kind of set his life straight, which is why we see him so happy in the final scene.
And that final scene. At the very end, after they looked after each other and didn't see each other look - oh that broke my heart the first time, because it was so beautiful, because of those voice overs where it seems like they are imagining what they would say to each other if they went through with the dinner we never see. On the second viewing, I'm convinced they follow-through with it and do have that dinner, but I kind of like how it ends here, not having the confirmation one way or the other of how their relationship continues. We simply end on them voicing and showing how they feel and all I can say is, what a subtle and beautifully sensitive series in the writing, acting and directing to be able to touch on and show things the way it does.

    • @fw3765
      @fw3765 2 года назад +7

I went through similar emotions as you did upon first and subsequent viewings! :) Someone pointed out to me that the show has used the "future conversation" technique before, in Ep 10 when the bartender starts talking about divorcing his cheating wife in either 3 or 10 years, while Dong Hoon is walking away from his apartment building and before we see the actual scene. So I agree with you, that the voiceover in the final scene is the two of them finally being able to express how they feel - for real.

It was weird seeing him so happy and smile so broadly. Lol Although Ji-An is much better now she seems to still carry a tinge of sadness with her, like most people do, but he seems to be in bliss. Dong Hoons breakdown in episode 16 was definitely a surprise as was his fit of rage and tears, when he finally was vocal about his wife's affair to his wife, in their apartment. He was in so much emotional turmoil and pain that he was crouched on the floor lower than his wife who was asking for his forgiveness. That scene brought me to tears as well . . . You have some really good insight, never thought about us seeing Ji-An through Dong-Hoons eyes in the last scene at the restaurant/ coffee shop. Dong-Hoon is such a good, and honorable man and there's no doubt in my mind that he fell in love with Ji-An through what seemed to be her own acts of kindness towards him and her loyalty to him. He would never allow himself to admit it outloud, and I respect that, but many of his actions showed his affection for her. Wonderful Series.

Donghoon's breakdown is a very unexpected but telling scene in "My Mister" for me. Donghoon lived his life by suppressing his personal feelings to protect the notion of stability and normalcy of his family and relationship. He became stoic and almost lost touch with his own emotions as he subordinated them to his principle for so long. In this moment of solitude and privacy (appreciate the choice of the term from you here), he finally acknowledged the emptiness of anchoring his personal mental well-being on others. His compass for action is now missing with no one around him and he is now responsible for his own happiness. He discovered the sense of loss as his tears suggested. This scene completes the narrative of Donghoon as a real person with vulnerability. The true reason for his breakdown could vary, but his feeling of loss and depression is unmistakable for all the years of doing the right things for others. I can't help but recall a confession I heard from someone who labored for his family all his life but wondered about the purpose of his non-stop toil after he became a empty nester for his sunset years. The confusion of purpose can be truly crushing. Fortunately, he's found a new reason for happiness shortly afterwards.
The ending scene of Donghoon and Jian's chancy encounter was done with thoughtfulness and taste, showing and validating the fruit of their effort of overcoming each one's struggle to find happiness for themselves, fulfilling their promise to each other. Regardless of whatever happens next, we know they remain true to their purpose in the pursuit of happiness, and we can't be any happier for the fairy-tale like ending.
Again thanks for providing the forum for those of us to share our lover and admiration of this fantastic drama.

Yes, the final scene was perfectly crafted in all those details. The way in which JA hears DH, rather than seeing him, also felt like a callback to the times she has spent just listening to his voice. The over-the-shoulder point of view to make us think about what JA is paying attention to. The subtle interruption of JA by her friends was critical too. And what trust the director must have had in the two actors to end the series without drama: a reunion without hugs, exclamations, deep & meaningful conversation, or even excessive smiling - but we get to bask in the unmistakeable warmth and delight they both show that the other is doing well in life. And both seem to me to be holding back a bit, for fear of imposing on the other.
A side note: there is a behind-the-scenes of the last day of shooting of MM, in which they shot that final scene, the last meal which you commented on last time, and JA first going to the police station. Three entirely different phases in JA's character shot at the same time. And, in between, Lee Ji-eun is messing around, play-acting for the behind-the-scenes clips. What is the term for an "anti-method" actor?

Lol ..I don't know ..I am not sure if she's an anti method actor though ..haha...i get a sense that she was so deep in the role that she needed to drag herself out of it in-between scenes to stay sane...but also you'd want to change your vibe between completely different scenes...yeah..fascinating...

Changes in the picture of ji-ahn's smartphone wallpaper.
The beginning of the drama - nothing.
Episode 15: Before the eavesdropping app was deleted: A photo of the sun over a tree-->
In hieroglyphs (Chinese characters), the letter (東) with the sun (日) in the tree (木) is the east(東:동:Dong). East is where the sun rises. That is, the wallpaper's picture represents Dong-hoon.

Wonderful analyses, thank you for your “My Mister” video series - I’ve enjoyed watching every one. Regarding PDH’s breakdown, I believe that he was crushed by the weight of all the years he spent “sacrificing” himself for his family, and hiding his true emotions. Ji-an’s leaving precipitated his breakdown… allowing himself to come to terms with his malaise: his fatigue from being the rock of support for his family for so many years… his spirit crushing work environment… his distance from his wife… It was necessary for him to come to terms with his profound dissatisfaction - to grieve the sad life he’d been living before he could turn it around and move closer to authenticity, and to ultimate happiness. That’s how I interpreted this breakdown.

New ending insight (unless I missed it in the discussion). When DH's team is surrounding a computer screen in his new company, there came a line that I initially thought was a throwaway engineering term. But after rewatching it carefully, I realized how revealing and intentionally written it was: "At first, I thought SG2 was missing like this, but when I looked at them, they didn't have a good connection." Just like DH and JA--until now! They hadn't had a "good connection" for their time apart, but they do now!

This drama makes me look back my life and think about what is 'being an Adult'. Keeping my life in a right way....Depressed moment comes out of blue, I understand that way. Um..He is a wild-goose daddy anyway. In Korea, as you know, passion for Education is so strong, maybe DH has no problem with family issue. In last scene, translation 'Ji-an have you found peace?' connect to Ep5. the scene DH ask her name's meaning. I can't see the English subtitle, so I wonder if the meaning of the sentence is understood in English clearly. Ji(至) means 'reach (arrive at)' and An(安) means 'peaceful state of mind'. I want to explain like "Do you reach peaceful state? (= Do you feel comfortable now, (as your name))?

I like to think this is a future conversation that they're having, and they're close enough that he's calling her "Ji An" without any honorifics, like a husband would call a wife he adores and feels completely comfortable around. 🥰

Thank you for this amazing journey into the most beautiful scenes, and I hope to see more content about this amazing drama🥰
The crying scene is shot really well: I'm impressed by the fact that he is alone, but still tries to hold back the tears all the time by concentrating on everyday life.
I don't deny that the lack of Ji An is one of the causes of the crying, but I perceive them more as tears of "guilt", because I connect the scene to their dialogue when he found her. He promised her he will be happy, but he can't be. After this outburst, in my opinion he recognizes his weakness and manages to overcome it and reinvent himself.
In the final scene, I think they are both curious to find out if things have changed between them, especially since she has had a radical life change. Ji An seems uncertain when she sees Dong Hoon at first, but he immediately welcomes her with that 1200-tooth smile (which perhaps confuses her even more 😝) and it's clear that he no longer has feelings of pain towards her (I refer to the scene of the metro where he told her she loved him because she felt sorry for him, and she reminded him that he was interested in her for the same reason).
Regardless of any future romantic development (which I strongly hope for 😍), it is clear that their deep friendship and the comfort of their relationship have not gone away.

Thanks, Stephan! Great to get your thoughts. Lee Sun-Kyun pulls off the crying scene so well - how do actors do that?! I like your insight that we're seeing Dong Hoon in a private moment that not even his brothers get to see. The others see his anger but not often his sadness; his restraint really is remarkable through the whole story. So at the end, where there are beautiful green and blue colors everywhere and he's happy and joyful is a strong contrast. I also like that Ji An used to keep tabs on Dong Hoon through the wiretapping, but in the end it's role reversal - Dong Hoon is the one keeping tabs on her in his talks with the Chairman. And he does it without needing to spy. 😄
Ji An's arc is so beautiful and uplifting. Someone mentioned that in the beginning of the show she's stealing coffee, and at the end she's walking confidently into the cafe.
I wonder how many can relate: as the viewer, I knew from Ep 8 on that JA liked DH, and then I just needed some clues that he really did like/ love her back. In the final scene it's there! His happiness in seeing her, initiating the handshake and holding on for so long and tightly, his shy Mark Darcy smile when she asks him out for dinner, and his extra looks back at her. How he feels for her is bubbling over and he can't help it.

When I watched this drama for the 5th time , I found a detail that I neglect before. When JA moved to the back of DH, her shoulder is up and down dramatically. JA is always being a cool girl who never shows too much emotions only if she confronts something about DH. For example, in her first confession, and at the scene JA querys the loan shark what he has told DH about her history, and at the scene DH asks for another pair of shoes, we all can see that JA's shoulder is up and down dramatically. So I think the DIrector wanted to show us that, even they seperate 1 year, JA still has strong feelings for DH. That's the reason she went to his voice like being attracted by a black hole.

Watching PDH break down in episode 16 was almost as gut wrenching for me as the scene where Ji An mourns over her Grandmother’s death. I love Stephan’s analysis of this being a private moment that we the audience only get to see. It’s like PDH takes on not only his own suffering but the pain of his entire circle. The loneliness and heartbreak of the bar owner Jung Hee, the loss of employment of his brother Sang Hoon, having to let go of someone you love as Gi Hoon did. He’s even throwing up in the bathroom like the actress Yoo Ra. If you look at the television as PDH cries, you can see a Jenga structure collapsing. The creators have really tied PDH to the buildings he inspects and designs as a structural engineer. Initially he scales a building and sees the cracks in the facade. This building represents him and his marriage. He later compares himself to buildings built on a river that when they go will not be rebuilt. Later, he sees a building beginning to sway, it’s holding but not stable. Ji An watches with interest. She’s the driving force in his life that’s moving the old, cracked, and unstable structure of his life. Like him, Ji An is a structural engineer exposing the faults in his foundation. Finally, as strong as PDH is, he can’t hold sway against the forces for change in his life. He collapses and gets a chance to be reborn as Ji An does when she moves to Busan. He rebuilds his life and we know that he’s created a room in his heart especially for Ji An. I hope she decides to live there. The symbolism is so beautiful in this series.

I'd never thought of him carrying the weight of his entire circle during his breakdown, but I think you're right - especially with the fact that he even vomits like Yu Ra. Isn't it so creative and profound that the show wove the symbolism of a cracking structure throughout the series? It's ironic as he's the one surveying physical buildings but he can't see his own self swaying. Or maybe he just doesn't know what to do about it so he endures and hangs on for dear life. I love what you have said about Ji An coming and shaking him up, exposing his faults...and finally giving him the thought and the permission to be happy. Monk also gives him permission to be happy.

Thanks Stephan for this wonderful series of videos on My Mister. Hope this is not the last video you’d make on My Mister!
I agree with your take on the breakdown scene. Dong Hoon has been bottling up his feelings for Ji An, and has been restraining himself due to his situation and his sense of duty and “earnestness.” He has been keeping a distance and setting the boundaries with Ji An, and now that she is gone, all those repressed feelings came pouring out.
That last scene was indeed just perfect. Ji An moved away to Busan to distance herself from DH who she knew couldn’t accept her affection. But those feelings don’t just disappear, and it was very evident in her expression when she saw him again. The initial tentativeness in their conversation was for me the two sending signals and feeling each other up, on where they still stand in each other’s eyes/heart. And then DH extended his hand, and that was more than a handshake -- it was DH holding JA’s hands, as it lasted for 32 seconds. That was DH sending the message that he is now a free man, as he never initiated contact with JA before. JA immediately took the cue and offered him dinner. Reading between the lines, it won’t be hard to envision what will happen next to DH and JA. 😉

And I liked how the show has kept its subtleness consistently all throughout. In that handshake, they only showed its initiation and then the parting of the hands, but in-between the hands were kept hidden below the frame. Imagine that they instead show DH holding JA’s hands tightly and in full view in that entire sequence instead of keeping them hidden below the frame -- that’s just giving too much away, throwing all hints at subtlety out the door! 😄

I can infer that many had the same outcome as well, missing so many things in just one watch. So I won’t be surprised if that handshake, kept mostly from plain view, its duration and significance would have escaped many people as well.

    • @JWPanimation
      @JWPanimation 2 года назад +5

It's not really a handshake, it's PDH finally signalling to Ji An that he's ready for something more intimate in the future. Look at the smile on Ji An's face as she accepts the hand shake
and she holds his hand until he releases it. BUT, it can also be interpreted the opposite.
According to a Korean Naitve poster here, the I'll buy you dinner is a kind of business brush off the way Ji An says it. She noticing that PDH is holding her hand for way too long says,
"I'll call you", signalling - can you please let go, which he does. At this point Ji An knows she has PDH, the question is, will she take him? The fact that he asks her if She has found comfort, indicates to me some kind of future meeting, either spiritually or physically. Whether they become romantically involved is still maddeningly enigmatic...

I always felt that Dong Hoon’s breakdown was a cumulative reaction to all he went through. Not just Ji An leaving and his marriage ending. He went through so much stress and anxiety because of his work situation. Almost getting fired for a bribe, the prep for the promotion interview, the backstabbing and political maneuvering between the 2 groups trying to win control. Dong Hoon suffered through all of that mostly in silence. Finding out about his wife’s affair and the confrontation with her when he punched the door-so many tough moments for him. I felt almost relieved that he finally let himself feel it and acknowledge what a hard time he had been through.
As for the ending scene of the series, it’s so perfect for all the reasons you said. I’m so glad they did not have a romance during the show but I love that we are left with a strong hint that they could have a future together. I think the age difference would be ok now that she has her own career/life and friends and no work connection to him. That’s my belief and I’m sticking to it ! 🤗

Yes. You know I watched this program so loosely at first and missed or misconstrued so many points on my own, compounded by a plot with Many twists and nuances that could be misunderstood anyway…. I just recently noticed that the scene leading into Dong Hoon’s breakdown is a conversation between him and Gi-Hoon, where Gi-Hoon is commenting about a Japanese movie called “nobody knows.” The first few times I saw this conversation between the brothers I thought it was a fluff scene, without a lot of point. But “nobody knows” (which I recommend) is about siblings who take care of each other when abandoned and facing dire circumstances. The “nobody knows” reference could actually have some application to the three “Hoon” boys who stick together in their own messy ways. But even more so, the audio of the dialogue of Dong Hoon and Gi Hoon bleeds into the start of Dong goon’s breakdown, and we hear Gi Hoon’s comment that children are resilient and can heal themselves. I think This is the writer’s and director’s way of telling us that Dong hoon’s breakdown will be healing to him as well. What do you think?

My view is that they were 100% absolutely IN LOVE. Who are you kidding??! They were totally madly in love with one another.
The age gap is pretty rough. I married my wife , who is 6 years younger than me, it felt like I was cradle robbing. 6 years felt like a lot. But 25 year gap is rough. But she is an adult, and he is one - there shouldn't be any issue. Although I get it ; each case is different. They are soul mates. No doubt about it.
When he talks to his Buddhist friend who I personally think have the saddest life ever, Donghoon says he failed at life. His way of living, this - always right and proper way led him down a miserable path. I suspect his walls were destroyed , so the societal norms of him being much older is out the window. He is a CEO of a company , he is a free man, the girl is more mature now too .What is stopping them now? They are hurting not seeing each other, if that is not love, its something corrupted and unnatural. An old man, and a young woman sitting around just aching to be with one another, but pretending not to love one another is UNNATURAL. But was is natural is for them to just admit to each other, despite whatever the circumstance I love you , and you're all I think about, and I want to spend my life with you.
Its got to be love. There is no grey zone here.
Also, we already know she is good with the elderly lol. I don't think it was a coincidence that she was taking care of her grandma. If she can do that at her worst , she can def take care of donghoon with ease in his old age. Because when he is 50, she would be 25ish, 60 -35 , 70-45, 80-55, 90-65... Its a pretty large gap for sure. But the dude will eat well, play soccer and stay in better shape- I think it'll work out haha.
    Either way, they in love.

    Hi Stephan!
I want to share one thing with you!
I recently found that in the whole drama, the actions of Dong-hoon&Ji-an this group is high sync with Ki-hoon&Yu-ra's.
And also, Dong-hoon&Yui-hee is reversed with Sang-hoon&Ae-ryeon's.
So I think the writer PHY has already told us the answers in the script.
(Does Park Dong-hoon love Lee Ji-an, and will they have a new start? Yes, just compare Dang-hoon with Ki-hoon's plots.)
(Does Park Dong-hoon have divorced Kang Yui-hee? Yes, just compare Dang-hoon with Sang-hoon's plots.)
I have written two articles (with pictures) about this ([KH vs. DH] and [SH vs. DH]) on Soompi My Mister's topic on page 351.
The following is the simple edition.
    (Note: DH=Dong-hoon, KH=Ki-hoon, SH=Sang-hoon, YH=Yui-hee, JA=Ji-an, YR=Yu-ra, AR=Ae-ryeon)
    -
    [SH vs. DH]
    SH and AR
EP1 Separation → EP8 SH took the initiative to show his sincerity to AR at Omma's birthday party, and AR accepted his goodwill → EP14 The couple duet → EP16 The couple reconciliation
    DH and YH
EP1 Still living together → EP8 They didn't interact too much at Omma's birthday party, and they even clashed during the return trip → EP14 DH sang solo → EP16 Separated
    -
    [KH vs. DH]
    [Horizontal (Same Episode) high sync.]
-EP4 is the Episode in which YR's room door(?) debuts. YR was still lying in bed, not showing her face, so we could only see her room door. The Episode also happens to be where JA starts to develop a little bit of feeling on DH.
-In EP5, YR wakes up and starts getting close to KH, and the two start to interact. The polt of DH and JA in the current Episode is the "watching the moon" plot. And since that Episode, JA has completely let go of her defense against DH.
In the case of EP4 and EP5, it seems that when YR has not yet woken up, it symbolizes JA's feelings for DH are not yet clear, while after she wakes up, it symbolizes that JA's feelings are clear.
-In EP5, KH starts to face his career failure (YR recalls the past of working with him in movies). DH also starts to face the failure of his marriage in the same Episode. (JA deliberately guides him to a public phone).
-EP6: KH's old colleagues are laughing at him, and they are enemies to him. DH also confirms the existence of his enemies(DJY) in the same Episode.
-EP11: Please read the high synchronicity described in the article BUY ME SLIPPERS = I LOVE YOU on GivemeslippersWordpressCom.
-EP12: KH confesses his inner thoughts to YR (the truth about the time he worked the movie with her). At the end of this Episode, DH also confesses to JA what he thinks of himself: "I'm not that nice."
-EP13: YR is being picked on by director An, and the executive director Yoon is picking on JA.
But KH has already prepared an expletive cheat sheet for YR to fight back, while DH wants to seek justice for JA directly. (But he is held back by Head of Section Seo).
-EP16: After DH and JA say goodbye, KH and YR also break up. And both DH and KH cry in this Episode.
    [Vertical (cross-episode) high sync.]
-EP10 KH's phone call with YR corresponds to EP14 DH&JA's goodbye phone call.
-KH and DH both helped the girls they cherished and went to the source of her pain to settle the score.
    (EP12) KH vs. Director An.
    (EP9) DH vs. GI.
-Both KH and DH ran to the girl they wanted to see, and both took a cab afterward.
    (EP11) KH runs to YR.
    (EP15) DH runs to JA.
-Both KH and DH go to watch a movie when they are sad. (And both for the girls they cherished)
KH is EP16. He broke up with YR at that time.
DH is EP14. JA missed at that time.
-KH helped YR clean up her vomit three times but still loved her. (EP4, EP5, EP11) This corresponds to DH's line in EP15:
"Once you know someone... Once you really get to know someone, there comes a point where you don't care what they do. And I know you."
-Both KH and DH drive the girl they cherish.
EP15 KH drives YR back to her home.
EP16 DH drives JA to see her grandmother and to the police station.
-EP8 YR asks KH if he can hug her (second request for physical contact), and KH hugs her. This corresponds to EP16, where JA asks for a hug, and DH agrees to hug her.
    (This is not my idea.)
-KH and YR are obviously a couple, but the whole drama only shows us them kissing and hugging, not holding hands (they break up at 3/4 of EP16), which is the same state as DH&JA before 3/4 of EP16. (EP3 JA kissed DH. EP16 goodbye hug.)
    (This is not my idea.)
    -
    Thanks for your reading.
I hope you will enjoy this!

@@ManVsDrama So I think we can say that this is indeed a love story because the story of DH and JA can be used to become another love story (KH and YR's).
And I think the relationship of DH-JA is correspondence to KH-YR, and DH-YH correspondence to SH-AR, in fact, has been lots of camera hints.
For example, in EP13, after the Park brothers learned about YH's affair, DH got together with his brothers. At that time, DH and SH were sitting on the same side, while KH and DH were sitting on opposite sides. But when they took a cab home, we saw SH sitting in the front seat and KH and DH in the back seat, and then JA's text message came.
And when DH was promoted in EP14, DH-YH and SH-AR sat at the wooden table area. These two pairs even sat right across from each other. But KH and YR sat at the bar, far away from them.
Then when JA was at Jung Hee's bar in EP15, it became KH-YR and DH-JA sitting right across from each other, and SH was in the corner.
And every time JA and the three brothers walk together, SH will be far away from DH at the beginning of the clip, and KH will be very close to DH, so I think the director indeed wants to hint us that there are secrets hidden in the script through his camera. 😀

One of the effects of your series (so sorry we are at Ep 16 now) is it sends me back to think about why My Mister has such an effect - so apologies for this long comment. You pointed out the significance of JA's friends in that last scene - even when they gather (out of focus) before interrupting DH & JA, you are aware that they are having an effect. So typical of MM. Even before DH turns round to see JA, the unknown person he is having coffee with stares at JA (whose face we have not yet seen) in a way which tells us what her face must be saying.
For me, the thread running throughout My Mister is about the effect of seeing the world - and especially seeing yourself - through someone else's eyes. This sets it apart from much drama where the key is interaction between pairs or groups of people: attraction/competition/hate etc. LJA's growth as a character comes about explicitly like this via the bugging. She could easily have just fast-forwarded, gathering just the information she needed to drive the plot along. She could have just listened, and grown to like, sympathise with, or respect DH, but it goes further than that. By looking at the world - and at herself - through DH's eyes she learns that cynicism is not the only way to see things.
There are so many incidents with DH which challenge her assumption that no-one will treat her well: DH accepting her argument that asking what her father does was discourteous; hearing herself being called that "pretty looking girl" (and she must also have heard the restaurant owner repeating that phrase); DH inviting her to the company meal, and making sure the meat is passed to her; the fact that DH hung around near the station after she missed her stop, etc, etc. At the company meal, you watch her overhearing the bullying of DH (without earphones this time), the alarm in her face when he is thrown to the ground, and finally watch her face change while swallowing her soju as his colleague says it is all the pathetic Mr Park's fault.
It is important to JA that DH is being considerate to everyone else too - colleagues, his wife, her grandma, and even the CEO - she knows he is not treating her well solely out of pity or to get something from her. Remember she says later she was struck by DH always asking his wife on the way home if he could get her anything.
Many of the incidents seem trivial to us but if you put yourself in JA's place, they would add up to have a big effect on you. And particularly as she would have expected DH to respond to her manipulation of him as coldly as the CEO does.
DH's "feigned ignorance" speech is a philosophy of life which says nothing matters except for how it is perceived by others, and how their pain at knowing what has happened to you, then pains you. He cannot bear the idea of parting on bad terms with JA not just because of his feelings for her, but, as he says, because he cannot bear to think of other people going about their lives thinking badly about him. His pain at having to discuss his wife's betrayal is not possessiveness, or shame/embarrassment, but the pain of knowing that others will feel bad on his behalf. He won't wear the slippers because his colleagues would think they are an inappropriate gift from his junior: it doesn't matter that they don't know, but he knows that is how they would think if they did. (JA's alternate world-view - of getting it all out in the open because people will find out anyway - doesn't leave her with any more freedom than DH.)
There are deliberate contrasts between DH's world-view and his family's comments about not having good enough underwear on to die in, the need to have a good enough funeral for their mother, his wife earning more than he does - none of which concern DH.
But it's not just DH & JA. Sang Hoon's pain at being humiliated was only unbearable not because it happened, nor because his mother had overheard it, but because he knew his mother had overheard it. Lee Kwang-Il sent the memory sticks to DH at the end, because he was changed by seeing the world through JA's eyes, and hearing her say that when he was young, he had been kind to her.
Even the story between Yoo Ra and Gi Hoon is all about how both their lives have been troubled not by their failed film project, nor by how badly he treated her, but by how others interpreted what had happened, and how their view of what those others thought had impacted on their lives.
And to wrap it up, the innocuous conversation DH is having before meeting JA in the final scene is about how he feels about how his son now feels about DH's poor English.
Thank you Stephan, for making us think more deeply about this wonderful series.

By the way...there's a scene that I really like which is 100% about what you're talking about: it's the scene when the office guys are trying to create a positive spin on the rumours of his relationship with Ji-An...and they can only see it as negative and they come up with all these ridiculous ways of twisting it...it's exactly about the topic of how society looks at something (without knowing anything) and what it actually is...beginning of episode 11 I think...I loved that scene because it was ridiculous..and exactly about this topic you're talking about!

He is mourning the dissolution of his marriage and the completeness of a family. At the same time, he is mourning a bigger loss of Ji-An. Ji-An’s appearance in his life made it seem that his life finally has meaning. As such, he is mourning a part of himself that died. And like what Ji-An said when she gets reborn again and again, he is going through a point of rebirth for himself.

She displays traits of Narcissism, how does a normal person become jealous of the love shown by a spouse to their mother and siblings? after all those are totally normal emotions. Also, when she becomes a lawyer she believes that the people in his life are beneath her status, hence the reason she wanted to move him away from them and even their neighbourhood. His own mother warned him of this when she qualified and advised him to also become successful. In between this language and cultural problems about understanding what exactly is lost in the subtitles, I really wish I had a sensible Korean friend :-) :-)

  • @freespiritdamsel
    @freespiritdamsel 6 месяцев назад

Knowing more about Korean culture, one has to know the importance of this last scene when Dong Hoon used “ae omma” when talking about Yoon Hee. He had always addressed her as “chib saram” (my wife). It is safe to say that she is no longer his wife at that point and just the mother of his child. Remember when Yoon Hee said she’ll wait until Dong Hoon decides to end the marriage. He finally decided to divorce his wife. That is why he cried on that solo scene because he finally lost both his wife and Ji-An.
Dong Hoon initiating the hand shake symbolizes his readiness to move forward. Throughout the story, Dong Hoon never allowed Ji-An to come that close except for the goodbye where Ji-An was the one who respectfully asked for a farewell hug.
Ji-An telling Dong Hoon she’ll have dinner with him also symbolizes that they are now in equal footing. That she is not just a simple girl needing his benevolence and pity. That in spite her experiencing life without him, she still loves him. That is why the look on his face, his meaningful smile showed his happiness that their feelings for each other never changed.
The last part where we hear Dong Hoon call Ji-An informally instead of Ji-An-ssi. It meant a lot. That means that their relationship has progressed to something intimate to be able to call her in that way.

Simply the greatest love story I have ever seen. Great, because it avoids cliche and shows love in its purest form.
As every other character close to Ji-An and Dong-Hoon observes during the series (including the grandma and Dong Hoon’s own wife), theirs is a special and precious connection. It is beyond words and conventional descriptions. Soul mates? More than that I think. Just imagine if Ji-An had been a young male who was living on the fringe. This was romantic love between a man and a woman.
Ever the stoic and the man who put duty before temptation, Dong Hoon is liberated in the last episode. While not said openly, it seems clear his marriage is finally over.
As for Ji-An, she is no longer the lost and desperate fringe-dweller dependent on him. They now meet as equals. And the look of unrestrained happiness on Dong Hoon’s face upon seeing her again tells you a new, physically intimate relationship is possible. She has a new self-respect and as drawn to him as much as she always was, but now from an equal standing.
Throughout I recalled what I saw as the most penetrating observation of Dong Hoon in the entire series. In his visit to his Buddhist monk friend, the latter urges him to stop living for everybody else and seek out his own happiness. After that, the grim, perpetually self-restrained stoicism starts to crack.
It’s certainly the best Korean drama I’ve seen - full of life-affirming insights into the power of love, human connection, community and the nature of happiness.
Finally, a special shoutout to the sound direction and music score. On watching this closely for a second time, I observed that so much of the sheer emotional punch of the key scenes derives from the soundscape, the incidental score and the big set piece songs.
POSTSCRIPT: The real-life loss late last year of Lee Sun-Kyung, who played Dong Hoon, was such a tragedy. He was a brilliant actor and it was his on-screen chemistry with the breathtakingly beautiful IU that was one of the key elements that made My Muster such an unforgettable experience

I think what I loved most about this ending scene was that during skip/catch up of everyone, you don’t actually fully see Ji-an. It’s always her back. It’s not until she finally meets Dong-hoon again do we get to see her face, but from his perspective. Almost as if the audience wasn’t really worthy to see her first again after the changes they’ve went through, but that Dong-hoon deserves to see her first the most. Out of everyone that could meet her again, it should be Dong-hoon. Especially because literally almost every moment until this scene, her face was the same harden, distant and cold expression. But now? Ji-an has changed and moved on from parts of her life and her face is almost new. Dong-hoon even days himself “I barely recognized you” emphasizing how much she has changed. Ji-an is peaceful after so long and it’s not the audience who gets to see her like that, but Dong-hoon. After all they’ve been through, it what they both deserve. Ji-an would be able to meet Dong-hoon on the streets again and greet happily, after finding comfort.

In the final episode, the photo of his wife and son is shown on the desk. He would probably find his way to be happy in keeping his family.
Grandma said to her to be happy from the relationship and Dong-hoon led her well to the people. Hurt from people changes to healing from people.
It seems to be a story between a grown-up and a youth, which is the usual point of the view of people here around me. In the same vein, I think handshake is simply 'congratulations' on where she gets to.

Do you think Gi Hoon is subtly letting him know that he knows about their love and has known it from the very beginning?🔹🔹🔹 I remember the first scene well, when the youngest brother listens to yanger Hyung saying that someone knew him very well internally, and he got to know this person well too. GH doesn't let on, but he already knows what's going on and asks casually if it makes him happy, and DH replies that it makes him sad. I think that from that moment on, the crazy GH knew well about his brother's love and the scene on the sofa is proof of it. What do you think?

Karen, when I first watched the show, I thought Dong Hoon's marriage had survived, too. The subtitles on Netflix reinforced that since he called her his "wife". However, as I started reading more about the ending scene, I read that the subtitles are wrong. He actually says "my kid's mom" (ae omma) instead of the usual "wife" that he had called her the entire show up until then (chib saram). That added an extra layer of distance between them, and that was the significant turning point for me. Since the show put that dialogue in there on purpose, I believe it was an indicator that they were indeed separated. And Dong Hoon was free to pursue Ji An if that's what they both wanted. 😀 But I know not everyone agrees with that interpretation. 😄

@@clokem2002 My understanding is that every other time during this drama he referred to his wife as wife and this is the only time he has ever referred to her as my kid's mom.
I believe his interaction with Jian additionally suggests that he is single. The Dong Hoon we have gotten to know would never look intensely at Jian the way he does here or even ask for a handshake much less maintain it tightly for 30 seconds if he was still married. He would not think that was right to do and would not have wanted to mislead Jian.
Also, during the voiceover where he asks Jian if she has found comfort he for the first time called her Jian versus Jianssi or Lee Jian which I understand suggests a very close relationship.
Although the ending has deliberately been set up to not be overtly clear all these are strong clues and also to me all the clues after the time lapse suggest he is already amicably divorced at this point.
This drama is not a romance but there was love between these two characters and I do think there is a strong liklihood that Dong Hoon and Jian will go on to have a romantic relationship. From the beginning of the drama this would seem improbable because of the age difference and much more. However, these two seem deeply linked in a soul mate type of way as demonstrated slowly through this drama and Jian is an old soul. Also, the way Dong Hoon acts when he meets Jian at the end suggests that during the time lapse he had sorted out how he feels about her and had come to terms with their age difference and had decided he would no longer hide his feelings if he met her again. It is also clear that Jian still has strong feelings for him as well. I wish them well.

I think the tears were not only because of JA, but it was a feeling of regret and self-pity for the days he had lived so far. It's a lot of complex emotions. He was able to heal himself and start fresh through those tears. It seems that DH also had feelings for JA. However, they each look back once, but they don't see each other like that. Nevertheless, they smile brightly and leave without any regrets. In the future, JA may be able to buy a meal or attend DH's mother's funeral, but considering that, the probability that they will develop into lovers is low. Because they are already satisfied and happy with that alone. Also, the director was not talking about romance. If he had intended that, he would have focused on shooting more romance scenes. The only kind of affection they shared with each other was a light hug
