Why I never do a TRICK on Gliders | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

- tutorial: fastest way to go on a glider / how to do glider vectoring / motion glider / drifting onto glider ramp in mk8dx.
why doing a mini turbo into a glider is faster.
this is better on 150cc, but can also be done on 200cc
RUclips shorts are too short!!! Here's some more info:
- this technique is called glider vectoring
- if you use the left stick AND motion controls to steer, you can get even more diagonal speed. This is called "motion glider"
- in this video, I did not use motion glider for the final comparison on royal raceway. If I did, the difference would be bigger.
- i used motion glider for the peach clip because I always use it online, and I used motion glider for the left/right swinging on dk jungle, to make it obvious that there is a speed increase. Without motion glider, everything I said is still true.
- i am not great at glider vectoring (yet)!! Even though my final comparison is faster, check out how world records do it to get a better idea of what glider vectoring should look like when done perfectly
- Modern world records use motion glider, so if you want to see what it looks like without motion glider, then find the playlist of a track's world records and go to one from several years ago (before motion glider was discovered)
Thanks 👍

J perm why did you switch content?
are you Jperm
Ive been doing that for the last few weeks passively just cause i saw you do it and it seemed faster but thanks for explaining.
you dont know what passively means
@@taahasiddiqui1071 passively as in i have been doing it without paying attention just as normal a function as breathing, would you not agree with describing breathing as passive? I just started doing it automatically without actually needing to think, so yes i do know what passively means. "
@taahasiddiqui1071 you are the nerd emoji if the nerd emoji was an idiot
Do you have to let go of the mini turbo because I just keep falling of the glider ramp?
@@Spaceguy12345 yes you let go of the mini turbo just before starting to glide
I still find it weird how fascinated I am with this despite not having ever so much as owned a single Nintendo device

I don't own any console and the amount of videos I have watched about games (whether it be PC, PS, or Nintendo ) is baffling.
Fun fact: most iPhones are made by Nintendo
Okay it may be faster but I love seeing Peach kick her leg up
Alright bud
@@Shortcat321jperm is that you?
Bros comment was on his newest short 💀😭
Cool
Shortcat is _NOT_ forgetting this comment.😭
I thought it was because mini-turbo was busted. Didn't think that a sucha modern racing game would have a diagonal speed boost bug.
So there is one circumstance where the mini turbo contributes. Since you release the mini turbo so late, you can sometimes charge a purple turbo thanks to this technique. If you're curious, check out the world record for sunshine airport or wild woods 150cc!
@@Connorsea this can be argued. historically diagonal vectoring being faster was usually an oversight.
@@Connorsea oversightes are bugs
The mini-turbo also helps since tricks reset your speed, it will be faster than the trick boost
I've always thought it's because your MT boost gets shortened by tricking, and so they just get a UMT by not tricking and realign using, well... this.
Didn't think the diagonal part is actually faster on the y axis (forward axis) tho... I thought maybe because you carried momentum from the speed, but not literally faster on the y axis.
Funnily enough, vectoring is a thing in many different games made on vastly different engines. I remember Smash Bros 3DS having a bug where when you got knocked away as Wario you would be able to vector back to the stage at ridiculously high speeds
the wector
It’s a very important technique in Super Mario 3D World speedruns
@@rightwerk and odyssey
and every single source game ever too lol
And also "the worlds hardest game" (flash)
It's a trick that exists in many games of completely different genres, because its typically a side effect of how movement is implemented in games - where sometimes sideways movement is independent of forward movement, causing diagonal movement to stack them together
This is a common exploit in many games (particularly older ones.) You are basically adding together the vectors of 1 move speed unit horizontally and 1 move speed unit straight. Using a^2+b^2=c^2 you can plug in 1^2+1^2=c^2. Meaning c=√2. √2~1.41. which means you are getting a little over a 40% move speed bonus under ideal conditions when moving diagonally in games that are programmed to just add the vectors for your horizontal and straight movements together.
Whilst you are correct, this is not what's happening in this case. The speed is simply coming from how fast you can move side to side (as shown in the video), he just so happens to being going diagonally when taking advantage of this side to side speed.
I don't really play mario kart at all but this is everything I want out of a youtube short. It's informative, it's concise, it has nice visuals. 10/10
Non-gamers:”Going foward is the only way to go foward!”
Csgo and mario kart players: *”I beg to differ”*
you really have a talent for explaining things so simply yet so effectively, the community has needed videos like this for forever now and i'm very glad you've remedied that
I always wondered why you don't trick off of them and honestly I'm mind blown after seeing that. Like actually big brain strats dude thx for the sick tip.
What I’m saying
Mario kart goes deep!
The one problem is the chance of lakitu taking you back on path
Yes, you don't want to go too far to the side or crash into a wall. Usually it's easy to see when this would happen.
This is why I recommend time trialing every track at least one time, just to make sure you're not making stuff up that doesn't work.
Man that half second really changed my life 👽
it’s a half second every glider and then 3 times for the laps, that’s how shortcuts work
You can't just learn a trick that saves 2 seconds. You have to learn several tricks that each saves a fraction, and they all add up. Don't underestimate it!
@@Shortcat321 fair enough i get your point but for this one I'd say it's not rly worth it cuz you could get out of map and have a good chance of having lakitu drag you for just half a sec so I'd say it's more worth doing this for map records in my opinion (nice short tho)
Thanks! I think this is worth doing everywhere that is safe (some tracks have a close out of bounds zone or wall, I just trick there if I don't have good alignment). Pros do it online all the time, so I count this one as definitely worth doing.
@@Shortcat321 fr people forget you have to learn any shortcuts you can and use them ALL to cut off as much time as possible
Proof Nintendo continues to not normalize movement vectors
As a competitive MK8D Player I must say this is the first good MK8D short I have ever seen. A Meta combo is driven, you are explaining an advanced strat very well and easy to understand. Also no screaming of an op shortcut that does nothing. 😅 First Short I have ever liked and that deserves its views.
I love glider vectoring, it makes gliders more fun when you're not just going straight
This the type of shit they don't teach you in Mario Kart School lol😂!
I’m so glad I stumbled upon this. I’ve been trying to beat the staff time trials forever, so this will definitely help!
Why am I studying for a test I'm not planning to take?
Vectoring! Always nice to see it in a game because clearly, it’s the most common unrealistic movement tech in any video game ever
Bro was 0.00000001 seconds faster 💀
More like 0.05-0.10 seconds faster. That's a lot especially when you compare how many times he does this and the other players don't. It adds up, especially in a racing game where times matter and you can be neck and neck with somebody on the last lap. This is for competitive games, not casual games.
Have you never played MarioKart 💀 the number of wins this could have gotten me istg

Instantly reminded me of trimping in TF2. Trimping is a mechanic where you charge into a ramp, jumping off of it, and like this you go WAY farther if you go sideways.

Nah its not that precise!
I wasnt looking and just scrolled, and genuinely thought that Jperm made a short
Me too
It is, in fact
Is it jperm
Funny thing is, this exact same logic applies to Mario 3D Land and Mario Odyssey. In both of those games, angling Mario diagonally on a jump will increase the distance that jump will take you. Maybe it has something to do with the way nintendo likes to code jumping mechanics.
I think this is because you have a constant speed when going forward, but when you go diagonally it adds the normal speed with the speed of going in the other direction. Just a programming error
This was an excellent and concise explanation.
Dude you sound exactly like j perm!
I think so too😂
I love how despite you landing literally less than a second later, but for speed running every millisecond counts
It's a racing game, every millisecond counts regardless.

It's the Just Case 3 helicopter physics all over again!
Every time I see someone talk about faster paths in Mario kart The difference is basically unnoticeable but it apparently changes everything
Yes, it does. If I can do a lap 2 seconds faster than you, it's not because I know 1 trick that is 2 seconds faster. It's because I know 10 tricks that each save 0.2 seconds
TIL even Mario kart has vectoring in it, absolutely wild, would not have expected that out of a Nintendo IP
You sound a lot like Jperm now that I think about it .
I have been watching Jperm for almost 5-6 years ,one would believe they can recognize his voice pretty easily

Because it's him. But he won't admit it for personal reasons. No need to pressure him.

He got burned out with the Jperm channel. He clearly want to keep them seperate, so let's not pressure him.
Dang, this is honestly just really good. Crazy 🤘🤘
Parents: you learn nothing from video games
Mario Kart: using literal geometry to win races.
I can’t wait to use this on my family to win even harder
Are you j perm?
Are you telling me that Mario Kart 8 still has diagonal acceleration bug from DOOM (1993)?
Bro discovered strafing 💀
That's what I learned while programming in Scratch. If you put your x and y movement both on 10 steps, and press only one of those keys you programmed it on, you would go 10 steps only and straight. But if you press both keys for x and y movement, you would go 20 steps diagonally.
I’m still 100% sure this is jperm
I love how it’s literally like a 3 foot difference but actually makes all the difference in this game
This literally proves that You could be so bad at Mario kart but can still win.
Also I love your videos your literally the Mario kart guru
how so
Cool video JPerm
I hate to call you out, but I can barely tell the difference. I recognize there is a difference, however, I would rather have a normal landing instead of, a) risking falling off or failing, b) probably a bit more vulnerable to items, c) having a messed up and unpredictable landing. I don't consider it worth it.
The difference on that particular glider (royal raceway) is about 0.2 seconds, or 0.6 over 3 laps. That can be the difference between several placements, it can be the gap you needed for someone's item to miss, or it can make no difference at all.
But I will say that once you get used to this technique and do it properly, it adds no risk, and pro players almost always go for it online. You can even dodge some items thanks to not being on the main path.
Some out of bounds zones or walls are really tight, but usually you can see it easily (like piranha plant slide or choco mountain). On those gliders you can play it safe and just trick.
@@Shortcat321 it also seems that the reason that is faster is because you used the baby Rosalina combo, and that has not only very good handling, but also very good mini turbo. Considering i usually play heavyweight/Teddy buggy, I am skeptical that it would actually help me.
World records that use fast combos will do this strategy too. This is not a situation where it's just me trying to convince people this is good. Pros use this technique online, and world records always use it.
If you don't want to that's your choice, but the technique itself is definitely better than tricking.
@@Shortcat321 sorry chief, I'm not a world-class mk8 deluxe player, and neither is most your audience
I respect your decision to not do something difficult because you don't think it's worth the risk. But I still show shortcuts that are difficult, and they only become worth the risk after practice. Something like the Hyrule circuit cut is extremely risky until you practice it, then it becomes a 100% success rate. This content is to help people improve at Mario kart, and I think that rejecting a better technique because you can't do it yet is not a good mindset for improving.
You're getting a drift boost to make up for the lack of a trick as well. Very clever.
This is actually a fairly common issue in games. Some engines actually have a built in funtion (in unity it is normalize) to help with diagonal speed.
Example
the characters movement speed is set at lets say 10. So if they move forward or left/right they move 10. that same constant speed if you move diagonnally becomes distorted. For the purposes of simplification lets just assume the diagonal is at 45°. We can use the Pythagorian theorum to determine our diagonal speed is 14.14 instead of 10.
10^2 +10^2 =200
✔️200 =14.14
This helps out a lot, thank you man.
Thanks! Now i can go faster a quarter of a second
Theres a lot of games with this kind of mechanic. Cool to see Mario Kart has it as well
I love ur vids so much

Motion controls also help at certain glider sections cuz you can make sharper turns while gliding.
Perfect visualization here. It perfectly explains vectors without any fancy terms. This is a great short.

Hi shortcat i love ur videos and shortcut tips so much its helped me a lot. Is their any other shortcuts that you could go over?
Yes I have more planned, based on people's requests for which track. Which one would you like to see?
Donut plains 3 has always seemed like a straight forward track but ive seen some of the shortcuts that u did in a video and i was wondering how u do that
Yup! I was just practicing donut plains the other day
Oh! Thats great im always glad whenever u upload cause i know that im gonna actually learn something lol
It's also why most first person speed runs speed runners run diagonal.
Best ways to be better at those parts of the track
Dude sounds like Jonathan Permutation
Insightful! Good job 😊
It's these small adjustments that SEEM ludicrous to people who don't care but mean the world in anything where your final time matters
Nice I'm going to use this next time I time trial tick-tock clock or try at least 😅
Remember you are great
this is just like that splatoon 3 launch trick that got patched out (rest in peace)
It’s kinda funny reading countless comments of people who don’t understand the most basic time value through a speed-running perspective
Even on its own, a time save is a time save, especially when it’s repeated 3 times in a run
And there are naturally other time saves that stack up
.5 + .5 = 1 > 0, for example
Also there's people who think this is too sweaty like this is so easy to do
Competitive Mariokart is not joke
J Perm, homie is that you?😂
First part I was like: "Yes you are faster but travelling longer."
Then he said: "but if we changed the direction of our cart"
I was like: "ah"
This is how a lot of beetle racers in guild wars 2 maneuver through different tracks really fast
That's a nifty little trick.
Also, you get the speed boost from the drift while in mid air
Walking diagonally in old fps games
as a demoknight main it instantly clicked for me what was going on here lmao. Cool to see trimping works in other games
Finally someone who explain this !
Dude discovers Pythagorean’s Theorem
Well time to use this to win against my buddies. Thank ya gonna need this one for my wiggler main change
gonna whip this tech out in a casual game of mariokart to steal first place when it matters most and not explain myself. cant wait for the chaos
Fun fact: this same concept works for sailboats to make them move faster over the water. Often times the fastest path is not the straight and obvious.
The glider ramps also take away a little bit of speed when you trick off of them after one of the 3 drift turbos.
If I ever see someone doing this I don't wanna play mariokart with them anymore
I think whats happening is that the game is seeing you try to sort of go out of bounds with the glider so its forcing you to get back to the track as fast as it can. By doing this it is making you go much faster than normal. Very interesting tech
You forgot to mention that u did motion gliding while doing that too, motion gliding will allow you to do this more easily and actullaly boost your speed a lot
"The fastest way to get to a place will always be a straight line"
a lot of games forget to account for vectors like this. if you had a speed of 1 x and 1y then you have about 1.4 speed at this angle thanks to pythagorus. usually developers either limit it to the full value of 1 or try and smooth it out, but ig it seemed insignificant to the mario kart devs
Came for the Mario Kart, stayed for the knowledge
Thanks I'll use this when playing 8 deluxe in my brain
Thank you J perm
"watch this!"
lands at basically the same time 😂
Chuckled a bit because that's how you move faster while parachuting in Warzone so I immediately knew why you were doing it. Idk if they made Warzone 2.0 like that however
