- Dio or Whitesnake!? Doug Aldrich reveals the gut wrenching decision he had to make, choosing between these two incredible bands led by two iconic singers!
Doug shares his experience working with legendary former Rainbow and Black Sabbath vocalist, Ronnie James Dio. He highlights his powerful and pitch-perfect voice that didn't require the modern technological enhancements of Pro Tools. He recalls Ronnie's energy in the studio and how his enthusiasm inspired him to perform at his best.
The conversation then shifts to Doug's time with Whitesnake and their incredible vocalist, David Coverdale. Doug describes their great chemistry and how they decided to continue touring after a co-headline tour with the Scorpions. However, tough choices had to be made, and Doug had to decide between Ronnie James Dio and David Coverdale. He explains the difficult conversation he had with Ronnie, which resulted in being asked to leave Dio's home and band immediately!
Through it all, Doug Aldrich maintains deep respect and love for both Ronnie James Dio and David Coverdale. He confidently expresses his pride in the time he spent with Dio and with Whitesnake, working closely with David and Ronnie to co-write and co-produce a plethora of songs.
It was a tough choice, but only one that could be made by a top guitarist such as he!

I'm grateful for the Dio and Whitesnake stuff Doug did, really like his musicality as well as his playing, attitude and tone... he's a pro.
Also, Ronnie would have blown up at Doug or anyone else sooner or later, regardless, so fuck it! Dio is a Bossman you can't really talk to, and I've walked out on someone like that before, they were way too much of a pain LOL
Doug is an amazing guitarist. He can hang with anyone you can name. His technique, riffs, and tone is top shelf.
I saw this guy with white snake he jammed his ass of one of the top 3 concerts I've ever seen. Hat's off to you sir.
Met Doug backstage july 4th 2002. What a great guy. So kind to the fans.
I prefer to listen to Doug as the only guitarist in any band, he excels in that environment.
Doug has always been a class act, one of my all time favourite guitarists... For hard rock lovers like myself out there I HIGHLY recommend two live concerts from two different bands featuring Doug - The first being Dio's 'Evil Or Divine' Live In New York and the second Whitesnake's 'Live In The Still Of The Night' London 2004. Doug and both bands respectively were absolutely on fire and if you like hard rock you must see them. I bought the DVDs years back where I was first introduced to Doug with his time at Whitesnake alongside Reb Beach (another phenomenal guitarist with a totally different style that fitted perfectly with Doug).
Thanks for the interview upload by the way man, cheers, rock on 🎸🎶
Aldrich and Beach- that's a great one, two punch on guitars.
Do you mean “live … in the shadow of the blues”?
@@stevenrix7024 I'm referring to the London show in 2004 titled 'Live In The Still Of The Night', but I know of that show also, another awesome WS show of which I've only heard the occasional audio clip of. Shame there was no official full concert release of it, or if there was I haven't been able to find a DVD copy anyhow.
Aldrich is a Rock N' Roll Supersoldier! Dio and Coverdale both had to pass through the fire of the Deep Purple and Rainbow organizations. Not an easy tightrope to walk. I can see Dio taking it a little more personally on that level maybe. Old rivalries die hard.
When I chance upon the 2001 Roseland ballroom concert with DIO, Doug already is one of my favourite guitarist. I thank my dad for this. He told me to take a look at that video. Most probably he was tired of me ‘djenting’ to metal only. 😂
Killing the Dragon is a good album!! As is Good to be Bad. Great interview! Doug rocks!!
He shredded on Killing The Dragon.
Doug is such a great guitarist and a nice guy, I have many albums from the bands he has been in. It would be great to have guitar lessons from a guy like this before he was famous.
RONNIE is my favourite singer of all time but David is pretty great aswell
They're different styles! Coverdale is more of a party. Dio is more of a prophecy. I would let David Coverdale go to join Dio. End of story!
Doug is so sick! Met him several times when he was with Dio. He seemed like a cool af dude and WOW can he play!
Gut wrenching decision, indeed. It must have been a very hard time for both Ronnie and Doug. Doug was fantastic in Whitesnake of course... Life can be complicated...
What's funny is Doug got in trouble because he's so good, too many top people need him.
Doug you are such a great guitarist and such a cool, sweet and nice guy so Down to earth that makes me love you so much i love people who are Humble never change Doug ❤🔥🎸🎶🤗🤘🇵🇷🤩
Very awesome clip!
oh god love you, having to choose whether to play with Dio or Coverdale. The rest of us can only dream of performing with either! 😂 Seen Doug with Dio and Whitesnake. Great shows!
Who could get mad at Doug Aldrich? He's like the nicest most mellow laid back chill dude ever..
I love Ronnie’s music but he was a real prick. I’ve heard too many stories exactly like this. I saw a fan recorded video where he said he wished Vivian Campbell would die. Unacceptable way to talk about somebody, just because you have differences. I respect him for his unbelievable music, but not much as a person.
I will Always love Ronnie's music Always!!, but I could always tell that there was vicious side with him especially some of the Interviews you see he holds a lot of resentment towards people he's worked with but on the flip side he seemed like a ultimately chill dude...kind, patient etc etc but the viciousness wasn't far behind....still miss the guy though, one of my favorite artist. lots of good memories listening to his songs as a kid.
Best youtube chanel! Thnk you very much!
Wow, thanks for the kind words 🙏 lots more great videos still to come 👍
Great Guitarist. First time hearing was on Dio live Evil or Divine. Killer live album with Doug doing some amazing work without being over flashy. Spoke there about leaving things up to a higher power.....wonder has he experience in a recovery programme as its a common term used?
I asked Doug way back on the day what he would have done if he hadn't become a guitarist. He said he would have wanted to be a football player.
I had the same experience with dating as Doug Aldrich had with bands sort of. Or nothing or all at once. That can be frustrating but at the same time it's a bit of a luxury problem.
Wow, never knew about that acerbic part of the relationship between Doug and Dio.
Had never heard Doug interviewed. I think he is a fantastic guitar player. Love the Good to be Bad White snake album. Great to hear him mention that song too.
If you like that record, check out Forevermore! That album is up there with the 80’s Trifecta of Triumph, “Slide it In”, “Whitesnake”, and “Slip of the Tongue”!
@@WhyTheHorseface I will check it out! Thanks for the suggestion!
Everything worked out. New Whitesnake was great and we got the Craig Goldy snooze-fest called Master of the Moon from Ronnie. Thanks, Doug!
Oh stop, you fool. I don’t think Doug would echo your sentiment, if he’s the man he comes across on this video. Craig Goldey is a beast and so is Doug. And their both better than your immature ass will ever be. (Pff)
Master of the moon has amazing songs on it.
I saw Doug and then met him after a guitar clinic not far from Toronto in I think summer 2018. He is an incredible player, he played right after George Lynch of 'Dokken' fame (who didn't wish to be there).Doug was so down to Earth and friendly shaking many of our hands!
Doug has always been a pro, and that would have been a very difficult decision indeed - but I would have done the same thing. Doug had a fantastic run in Dio, but Whitesnake was a clear step up, particularly given Doug was writing with DC. In my opinion, Doug's tenure with Whitesnake produced some of their best ever work - take a listen to 'till the end of time', and tell me that isn't one of the best songs DC ever committed to tape.
Love Doug’s playing. He was the perfect fit for Whitesnake. And imo they haven’t replaced him to date (no offence to any of the other guys). He’s like a more bluesy Soulful version of Zakk - absolutely awesome player 👏👏👏
It’s sad that he and Ronnie fell out like they did but I take Ronnie’s reaction as a direct consequence of how much he liked Doug and how he respected him as a guitarist and musician. Of course he didn’t like to hear Doug was leaving for another band, that’s only natural. If Ronnie didn’t like him or didn’t respect him he wouldn’t be there in the first place and secondly he wouldn’t care when Doug left. Their time was up and Ronnie was sad about this
Shame Doug and David couldn’t get a comprise in 2014.
Killing Dragon was an amazing album! Once of Dio's best!
I LOVE Lion. Not a bad song on the first album. So many great riffs🤘🏻
We spoke about Lion in the full interview. He turned down better offers in the hope of making Lion work. Underrated band.
A common thread throughout all of these stories about Ronnie is how temperamental he could could be.
Wow what spot. I must say for myself I played more Whitesnake music then Dio. Dio was to dark for me. To be told to get the f-out that's really harsh, and a good reason to stay with the Coverdale.
Doug never mentioned in the decision-making process to either stay with Dio or join Coverdale that Coverdale offered more money.
doug aldrich is an underrated guitarist. sad that he couldn't record more albums with Ronnie dio; due to his untimely death. as his playing in Whitesnake he held his own too. Coverdale has had so many guitarists. sykes , bernie mardsen ; steve vai ; Adrian Vandenberg. so much talent in that band
Coverdale's track record of guitarists is insane. All those you mentioned and more in Whitesnake, he did that album with Jimmy Page and not forgetting Blackmore in Deep Purple!
@VRProcks that album with Jimmy page is incredible 👍I also have heard ; Jimmy's solo album from 1988 Outrider . pretty underrated. Of course His music with Zeppelin will never be topped but that album with Coverdale and the one I mentioned are ; just good too
Yeah I love that Coverdale Page album. Take Me For A Little While is such a great song! Will need to check out the other one you mentioned, don't think I've ever listened to it 👍
Guitarists are a dime a dozen...but a great singer is GOLD !
Dio found success with BLACK SABBATH and that was his calling.
That's what you get for being that good! It's like winning the lotto, and not knowing how to spend the money.
Ouch. You hit Ronnie's sore spot there.
RJD told Doug to get out of his house. Doug made the right decision because within three years of that incident, RJD was back with Tony and Geezer in Heaven and Hell. So Doug would have been looking for a new job anyway.
from 1975 to 1989 the talent walking around on planet earth was OVER THE TOP. concerning HARD ROCK. i hear ya buddy. i was a roadie
It was a great quarter century 1969-1994.
Ritchie told when Ronnie was in the right mood he was horrible... anyway why Doug left WS?
Doug needed to go with the singer who pays his bills!!!!
Hmmm was this Doug and Ronnie exchange after Killing the Dragon/Evil or Divine but before Holy Diver live? Or after?
2005
You chose correct by going to WS.
Always seemed to me he was a just a gun for hire.
that part of dio you can attribute to blackmore. some of the dark one's traits rubbed off on ronnie
Doug Aldrich you made the right decision to go with White Snake and Coverdale because Ronnie had a lot of bad issues he was a mean old bastard Ronnie had a switch and he was just awful acting sometimes I remember one time he went completely berserk on Vivian Campbell
You never let anyone down
Doug was surprised and disappointed. Normal reaction from normal person to the rage of a narcisst.
COVERDALE
He came back to do Holy Diver live right?
RJD is the last in line I suppose...
Seems like a nice guy, but totally had that coming. if you make a decision like that, to leave someone and go with someone else, you don't wait for the other guy to book a tour and go, ""Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you...."
Damn he's aging well. What's the secret??
The illuminati symbol on Dougs right arm? WTF!?
That’s why he’s in the club.
@@wakeupcanuck6763He was already famous before he had that tattoo.
That's no question. Let down Coverdale. That would be IF Ronnie was STILL alive.
Sykes is Whitesnakes guitarist. There is no replacement. Should have renamed the band Coverdale
Whitesnake were Whitesnake long before John Sykes.
@@VRPRocks It was Sykes playing and song writing that made them a powerhouse
@@nc1969 ...in America. Everywhere in Europe, Japan and here in the UK they were already massive. In fact, in the UK, their two highest charting albums are Ready an' Willing and Come an' Get It - 1980 & 1981. There's a whole group of people, a lot amongst the subscribers here, who hate anything to do with 1987's album because they sold out their blues rock roots for the hair metal stuff.
@@VRPRocks i understand we're you are coming from... the points you make.
Im just a huge Sykes fan and really see the albums with him.... for me as ones i identify with. Great music is just that. They were commercially successful and then the labels come... but those were great albums with timeless music.
Speaking specifically of their US success... it was with Sykes... not Vai, Vandenberg, Aldrich or Viv Campbell... as much as i love those guy's playing... Sykes signature style and passion, songwriting is what made them the huge success in the US.
@nc1969 I totally get where you're coming from. Personally, I love all eras of the band. The 1987 record did what Coverdale needed to break America. Incidentally, I've just interviewed Adrian Vandenberg, videos from that will be on this channel in a week or so 👍
From the anecdotes about Dio - here from Doug - who is always honest and believable - and particularly from Vivian - a real little prick with that little man New York arse hole personality - it's a thing.....look at Rudi lmao
Ronnie was moody at times. I should know.
That's not a hard decision
of course it was
Doug is good bet he never played on any great records
That’s nonsense, Whitesnake “Good to be bad” and “Forevermore” are amazing albums
@@HayesProject79 if they were so amazing why weren't they platinum albums?
Any douche can be a judgmental critic. What have YOU done dude besides being a "Negative Nancy"?
@@HayesProject79Killing the Dragon is outstanding, too.
@chrischoir3594 If they would have come out in the 80's they would have been, easily.
The Winery Dogs is the best Rock record to come out in 10 years. There were at least 5 to 7 Grammy worthy songs. Didn't go platinum and didn't win a Grammy. We live in a age where all the record companies and paid radio stations play Hip-Hop, Pop. There are hardly any chances. Unless you get lucky through a video on RUclips or Tik Tok.
Go listen to those albums. They are glorious. Definitely worth the time and Doug's guitar tone is to die for.
Dio didn't pay well.
I love how now after dio's death the truth about dio's heart and overall attitude is now coming out ! I love dio's singing but he had developed a terrible attitude towards all of the musicians that work on dio's albums ! He treated musicians that worked with him as hired gun's and not as co-song writers ! The only thing we miss about ronnie is his voice. I am still in agreement with Ritchie Blackmore in that he said that all dio wanted was to write music about devil's and demon's ! I also heard in an intervieew with dio that he was a practioner of White Magic ! White/Black it is all the same and THAT is why dio is where he is right now !!!
"I also heard in an intervieew with dio that he was a practioner of White Magic ! White/Black it is all the same and THAT is why dio is where he is right now !!!"
Are you well?
Hopefully God will have mercy on his soul.....he was mislead
Ronnie was moody, typical of those born under the zodiac sign of cancer..
Very disappointed he had the Illuminati one eye tattoo 🤷♂️
There is no choice I would throw the rest of the metal singers in the garbage disposal especially David Coverdale he bluntly sucks to be with dio Glenn Hughes would of been way better in white snake
Whitesnake is Coverdale's band.
@@TheLjohnfoxx yes I know listen to mistreated from rainbow and you will see that David Coverdale sucks and Dio is a number 1
Doug has good technique but his bends are always weak because he doesn't support them properly. Great technician other than that.
His bends are glorious. What are you talking about?
@@HunterRouth I disagree.
