Tony and geezer were always kind and polite.
Kept to themselves.
Vinnie and Ronnie were absolutely fantastic.
Every nite it was a smokefest and tons of laughs with those two.
I had some really great conversations with Ronnie and Vinnie.
I was in the production office calling home to check in with my sons mom and he gets on the phone with her and has a half an hour conversation with her...lol
Ronnie was a great person.
Always had a few minutes for fans.
Truly the man on the silver moutain.
His legacy will never die.

I saw Vinny and Jimmy Bain sitting at a pub table of the After Dark Club in Houston waiting to go on stage as World War 3. I wanted to acknowledge them but I did not know how and I did not want to bother them so when I thought they were looking in my direction I held my drink up to salute them. To my astonishment, they both lifted their glasses up and acknowledged me! They were at least 30 feet away and the club was dark.
Ok, that's just cool. 👍 2 legends right there. So, in hindsight, do you wish you would have talked to them?
I spoke with Vinny after a LIL concert and asked him how he came about playing with the his stick between index and middle finger and he told me he and Carmine were experimenting and he since stopped because he pinched his hand! True story!
If rock stars are drinking at a club table, they're open game to be approached and appreciated. They enjoy recognition very much. It's the same as saying "thank you for your service & sacrifice" to a military veteran.
Dio's proudest accomplishments were 3 of the greatest albums, with 3 different bands. Vinnie was there for 2 outta 3.
Vinnie seems a very humble guy for a killer drummer, I saw his drum clinic about 20 years ago he is much more capable than you can even comprehend!
I'm always amazed at how humble and genuine Vinnie is, especially compared with his brother Carmine, whos, uhm, not necessarily quite as humble....

Vinnie is awesome. The live stuff they recorded during the Angry Machines tour was just sick A.F. Vinnie was ON FIRE 🔥🔥. Some of the best drums I've ever heard. It was so tight, so crisp, and he just went off. That was what really made me realize how good he was.
Vinnie's drumming to me always sounded ploddy not fluid but maybe that is was what was asked of him. After all Bill Ward was a hard act to follow

They re-recorded the instrumental tracks around 2018 or maybe 2013. The mix is much clearer. The guitar solo is better. @@user-cruton
I was 12 years old when the Heavy Metal soundtrack came out and I bought the record because it had Journey and Devo and a cool cover. The instant The Mob Rules started playing I was blown away and instantly became a heavy metal fan. To this day it's my all time favorite song.

I was 13 when Heavy Metal was released, but unfortunately I didn't get to see it at the theater(although some of my friends did). I did get to see Black Sabbath's Mob Rules show later that same year at the Spectrum in Philly(12/4/81). It was my 1st ever concert. I saw Ozzy's Bark @ the Moon tour in 84, and Dio's Sacred Heart tour a year or 2 later. So I've seen Vinnie and RJD play with both bands.
Strangely, I didn't actually see Heavy Metal until many years later, probably not til the 2000s!
Love Bill, but if anyone was gonna replace him I'm so glad it was Vinnie the powerhouse Appice, a great rock drummer as is his brother Carmine 🥁
When Bill Ward refused to do "The End" tour, I started an unsuccessful online campaign to have Vinny replace him. I took my 14-year-old son to the Bristow, Virginia show and he got to see three original members of Sabbath. The addition of Vinny would have made it extra special.
@rachel112263 Context is helpful here. Bill said it was the unfair contract ( Sharon ! ) while Ozzy blamed Bill's health issues. I saw The End as well and it was incredible. It's shameful Vinny wasn't even asked to do 13 but that's Rick Rubin for ya. Geezer & Tony both on record as not enjoying that experience & would never work with him again. Let's hope they pull off 1 final show as has been discussed recently. 🤟
Dehumanizer is a very great underated album
Quite good songs but sound is thin.
Facts. Also, sounds freaking amazing with a subwoofer. It was mixed very well in my opinion. Love the complexity.

I saw them with Danzig on the Dehumanizer tour and they were excellent. It wasn't some small venue at all. That was a great album. Everyone always mentions grunge like it was the death of heavy metal and rock n roll. Heavy metal and rock n roll are still here with a huge following. Grunge who?
I saw that show in Cleveland, Danzig was great but Sabbath was so powerful! Vinnie's drumming, Geezer and Tony, and Ronnie....I never heard anyone like Ronnie, greatest Metal singer of all time imo.

Vinnie 1000 times better than older brother. My humble opinion!!! Last in line drum parts, heavy as hell . Love his drumming
*I always loved Vinnie's sludgy way of swinging the time of his grooves, especially with his fills and accents... Without actually slowing the tempo, the way he slightly yet consistently lags the striking of his kit, it's always given his grooves a sense of immense size and weight. But should it be necessary, he can rev up his speed, while maintaining that monstrous laggy groove.*

Vinny's drumming on Holy Diver was a huge influence on me. His creativity is so unique to him. Absolutely amazing player. One of my favorites for sure.

Hell yeah. Seen him with dio on sacred heart tour, talked to him at a drum clinic then saw him perform at a club here in Las Vegas with vivian Campbell. They went under the name Last in Line... total bad ass🤘

Just an incredible drummer. He probably made the right choice in turning down Ozzy. Sharon fired Lee Kerslake and Bob Daisley after the second Ozzy album was recorded. Randy wasn’t happy and voiced that he would probably leave soon afterwards.
I met Vinnie at a Last in Line gig this past summer. My brother is a drummer and opened for his band in Roseville, CA. Vinnie was super cool to both of us after his sound check. We got a couple of cool pics with Vinnie, along with Phil Soussan. Very cool guy! Vinnie is such a good drummer too - rock on!
Saw them at 15 on the Mob Rules tour after loving Sabbath with Ozzy. After that concert I was totally sold and a fan of this lineup forever
I saw Sabbath on the “Black, and Blue” tour in ‘81 with Blue Oyster Cult. I had just graduated from Parris Island the day before. Talk about culture shock.
Same tour, Cap Center in Landover, MD. Saw Them both again MANY years later. Sabbath (w/Ozzy) at Bristol, VA and then BOC In Nashville. Wore my Sabbath tee to the BÖC concert and went backstage for a “meet & greet.” That shirt got a comment from Buck but they all appreciated the humor. I told them I thought it was a GREAT fucking show! BÖC is my absolute, hands down, favorite American Band!

Words cannot define how bad that album was. Heaven n"Hell was a masterpiece, Mob rules was really good. De-humanizer was terrible.

I took drum lessons from Carmine Appice when I was a kid in NJ. I was too young at the time to realize who he was, but he taught me well and is/was a great drummer.

This explains why the Mob Rules from the movie was so vastly different from the album. Both are great.
I agree with Ozzy when he said they should've changed the band name after he left because the Dio incarnation really was a whole different animal.
The original lineup will always be first in people's minds but those four albums with Dio are all killer and Vinny is a fantastic drummer! I think that incarnation of the band was just as strong as the original.

But.... because of the fact that the second incarnation would not have been possible without the first to piggyback on- no insult or slight to anybody, just the reality that Ronnie & co. had all that existing rocking material to rely on, so I respectfully disagree, I know what you mean band wise as far as ability to perform & execute songs, just factoring in the intangible creative aspect of writing - so IMO, the latter can't surpass or even equal the original line up- I don't recall nearly as many Dio days songs as I do Ozzy era ones- rock on

I was 13 years old and a young guitarist but I loved Vinny's fills and rolls that kept the music pacing. Then he joined Dio and kept that feel going.
Saw them in ‘80 at MSG as part of the Black and Blue tour. They kicked ass.

@@roccidisopa661 In those early days, Kansas was opening for Aerosmith. Steven Tyler was so jealous of Kansas, he was caught pulling some of their plugs of their monitors and amps. Dave Hope(bass player for Kansas) told him, if I catch you again, I'm going to kick your "blanking" axx
Dehumanizer is one of the best metal albums of all time IMO. I saw them in Albany NY on that tour. I loved the fact that they played a smaller venue.
👉 Speaking of big bands playing uncharacteristically small venues..... I live near the college town of Newark Delaware. For some reason in 1989, at almost the height of their career, Metallica decided to play at a local club called the "Stone Balloon" on Main Street Newark. That place couldn't have fit more than a few hundred people.
That show kinda flew under the radar, and apparently it wasnt promoted until a late date, so I completely missed out on it! It only cost $13 for a ticket! From there they went right back to playing arenas and NBA basketball stadiums. They released the video of it in 2018. I don't even know how they knew of the Stone Balloon's existence! Odd...
Saw Dehumanizer twice, was front row at the first one, really small venue, and they were larger than life. (Newport Music Hall, Columbus, Ohio) The 2nd show was a few days later in an arena in Dayton Ohio. Great as well, but not like being in front, at a small 2000 person venue.

Met Vinny at a cymbal promotional gig at Long and McQuade in Toronto 1985. Great guy. Laid back and personable.

In the early 90s my band opened for a band calle World War 3. Vinnie on drums and Jimmy Bain on bass. At the end of the night both Vinnie and Jimmy came on to our bus to hang out. Our bus was a 1972 International school bus wich we converted into our "tour bus". They totally were digging on our Partridge Family bus vibe and we chatted and partied for about an hour. Memorable evening rocking with and hsnging out with rock legends. Forever grateful.

I used to pack a 7 piece Ludwig kit into my 69 Camaro in the early 80s, bass drum in the front seat, wouldn't fit anywhere else. This brought back a lot of memories.
My old drummer used to make a full kit fit in a Chevy Vega back in the day .

People talk Carmine all the time, with good reason, but Vinny is one of my favorite drummers. I sang for years and sang "Neon Knights" for around 18 yrs., "Children of the Sea". Two of my favorites to sing. What a band, that version was.
I was kinda hoping to get Vinny's opinion on Vivian Campbell as to how great he thought he was and possibly the audition process for Dio's new band maybe hearing wat stood out with Vivian that landed him to get the gig .I mean that Holy Diver record IMO was some of the greatest Heavy Metal Guitar playing in history .was truly amazing and a Heavy Metal Masterpiec

Vinnie is one of my heroes in metal drums.. drums period.. He carved out the perfect style and sound that made Black Sabbath rock in a whole new way with him and Ronnie.. I mean this guy slings different than anyone else on the Black Sabbath and Dio works ... without that unique style he crafted none of Sabbath or Dios work would have sounded as good .. love Carmine but I'll hang my sticks on Vinnie

I was at that show at Aloha Stadium, and it was f-ing AWESOME. RJD was a force to be reckoned. 1980 or 81. I was in the Navy stationed at Pearl Harbor at the time, and about 20 of my shipmates attended. We talked about it for weeks afterwards

This iguy is still one of the most amazing kings on the kit got to see him at a guitar center clinic in Covina and have recently ran across him somewhere else on the music scene and meeting him and watching him play the way he does is an honor and still inspiring for me.

Vinny made the right choice, the band Dio was more successful than Black Sabbath was between the years 1983-1991

I saw BS in November of 1980, i must admit i was disappointed that Bill wasn't there but VA was fine. But i did see them in 78 also so caught both versions of the band, so life was good.
Mob Rules tour was the first live show I saw as a kid, opening act was Outlaws, so cool
I saw that tour, but there no Outlaws. I did see Molly hatchet outlaws.

I saw that 1st gig at Aloha Stm. where Vinny's notes got rained on and Geez had to march him thru Bill's parts which didn't always work. but they were still great!

I met Carmine at "The Channel" in Boston. The Guess Who, Edgar Winter, and Johnny Winter were on the bill. I can't remember with which group that he performed with. I think it was with "The Edgar Winter Group". Very nice man. He plays them drums pretty good too. 😂
Did you ask him about his time with Derringer? I think the series of Derringer albums that he was on are highly underrated. Check out the live stuff, that band was incredibly tight.

Saw Sabbath for the first time in 1978 by the way. Manchester appollo England never say die tour. And as for Dio later on magnificent singer. I have all the vinyls on my wall excellent band. Dios Heaven and hell is a classic album to me.

Children of the Sea Heaven and Hell Wacken live : Dio and Appices locked-in performance is transcendental. Fxxking Astounding.
Love listening to these older New York Italians talk about their heyday. I'd say 1/4th of the metal scene was Italian.
