LYRICS
I just love the kind of woman who can walk over a man
And I mean like a goddamn marching band
She says, “Like, literally music is the air [she] breathe[s]”
And the malaprops make me wanna fucking scream
I wonder if she even knows what that word means
Well, it’s “literally” not that
Of the few main things I hate about her
One’s her petty, vogue ideas
Someone’s been told too many times they’re beyond their years
By every half-wit of distinction she keeps around
And now every insufferable convo
Features her patiently explaining the cosmos
Of which she is in the middle
Oh my God, I swear this never happens
Lately I can’t stop the wheels from spinnin'
I feel so unconvincin’
When I fumble with your buttons
She blames her excess on my influence
But gladly hoovers all my drugs
I found her naked with her best friend in the tub
And we sang “Silent Night” in three parts which was fun
Until she said that she sounds “just like” Sarah Vaughn
I hate that soulful affectation white girls put on
Why don’t you move to the Delta?
I obliged later on when you begged me to choke y’

BRILLIANT ...
Don’t know if I’ve ever read a more perfect sentence, cheers friend.. 🍻
@@jasonshannonful Cheers to you as well!
@Elijah Mathews Henry Hello
As I always say, "Nobody knows how I like it the way I do."
+Jericho Jacob I'm stealing that, It's mine now
Me too Jericho. Taking it. Using it.
I play this song when I'm getting ready to go out. It gives me butterflies.
The layers in the opening verse are amazing, the misuse of malaprop in describing the girl he perceives as trite and pretentious is trite and pretentious in its own right. This is what makes FMJ great; within every song where he lashes out at society and other people, he also questions himself and his own perceptions and understanding of what is 'right'.
I think what he's saying is she thinks she can sing and when she does it's always incorrectly and it drives him nuts. Then he says "I swear this never happens" There is only one instance when a man says that. He basically is just over her bullshit.
He used Malaprop because she said, "Literally, music is the air I breathe." He really should have used solecism instead.
I don't find any pretense in intelligent, witty lyrics, especially when the insults are so razor sharp.
It is pretentious to make fun of someone for not knowing the definition of a word and then use it improperly yourself (which is exactly what he points out that he is doing).
Father John Misty or full metal jacket?
I always took it as "the malaprops makes me want to fucking scream, I wonder if she even knows what that word means, well it's literally not that". He's saying he's misusing malaprops and she'd never know it. He wonders if she knows what the word means and it's "literally not that"; literally not correct in the sense he used it.
This man is the living embodiment of Bojack Horseman
Actually Warren Zevon likely was
Likely Warren Zevon was more like that, Or at least his songs spoke to that kind of lifestyle
@@triplucid3563 werewolves of London?
I agree, Father John is pretty bojackian.
My dead GF instructed me;
I still don't get it.
This is like, literally the best song ever
You must learn to love yourself, before you can truly love someone else.
i love how he moves. i know nobody who walks, dances etc. like him.
its drugs
... I read that in Mr. Mackey's voice lol
totally agree. his moves are unique.
That's swagger. Well that and some alcohol and occasional drugs. He is literally the best songwriter within our reach 😉
Fuckin' Josh Tillman, everyone. Pun only partially intended.
I just want FJM to be the soundtrack to my life, falling in love, having children, happiness, pain, dying, the whole thing - I just want FJM to play in the background.
is that not how life goes? is that not why we all have fallen so deeply in love and infatuated in a sense? its authentic.its real.its raw and uncut....
still want to booze, drugs, meaningless sex, and hatred for mankind as a whole? as a person who did that for a good decade every day I promise it’s not as romantic as it seems
Thank you Father. My life has been advocated vicariously thru your music.
As a video editor on the side I really hate terribly done or obvious split screen edits, but man this was flawless and also told a really poignant message rather than just playing with a gimmick, so bravo Father John Misty, amazing music but also amazing concepts and execution for videos
+dizzykiwi3 Any chance you could explain, in brief, how this sort of video was done?
+Max Ashburn Any scene where the two are facing the camera and there's enough of a space between them, that's just filming two shots of FJM and then split screening them together (think of it as cutting the right half of the screen off of one take, cutting the left half of the screen off the second take and putting the two takes next to each other), any shot with one person's back and FJM's face is him with a body double (he mentioned how he had to kiss his body double like 50 times during the shoot). The scenes underwater are likely with a double as well because its blurry enough. The real beautiful shot though is that panning shot where he takes the hat off and then wears it, that's using a dolly or some kind of track so that the camera can do a consistent pan for the first take where he plays the FJM in front and then the second take where he plays the FJM in back, from there its just a lot of touch ups to blend the clips together and any imperfections between the takes.
+dizzykiwi3 Man thanks for enlightining us
What about the scene with the water moving around in the background, though? 1:40-1:45
It's been a year, but in case anyone sees this and was wondering I thought I'd give insight. The way they did the shot at 1:40-1:45 is 'easy' enough to explain. Basically, the footage they used of FJM on the left was filmed somewhere else with a green-screen backdrop. What they did was film him emerging from the water and just superimposed it onto the footage of him actually getting out of the pool. That's why the one on the right can 'interact' with the side of the pool because he's actually there. In comparison, the FJM on the left sort of just 'floats' there - if it were real he'd also need to touch the side of the pool because it's too deep to stand in - but you don't really notice it because it's a short scene.
this is exactly what everyone would do if they met their doppelgänger
+dickdickdickdickduck haha you mean if they met joshua tilman
+Sør Juana Neblina sorry, was in the moment.
+Sør Juana Neblina also I think my phone SC'd me. Have a good day!
Best album of 2015 so far. Saw him live. Well, sayin it was great is just a fucking euphemism.
+Aurélien Joly so fuckin jealous.
I just read the lyrics to this song and the guys a fucking genius.
+happymeltedcity I write lyrics and he is the bomb
A modern remake of Harold and Maude with J. Tillman's songs sounds like a very, very good idea.
YAS. You're a genius
"YAS"
“i just love the kind of woman who can walk over a man, i mean like a god damn marching band” fucking quality
One of the best lines I’ve heard in a longtime 🤘🏻
Man, I wish I had the creative genius and abilities that FJM has. I never heard of FJM until "I Love You, Honeybear" showed up on my doorstep from VMP. It quickly became an all time favorite. FJM is so totally submerged in the hipster spoiled brat overindulged lifestyle and yet is able to keep a jaundiced distance from it--the ultimate aloof privileged socialite. I can't tell if he makes fun of hipsters or not. I can't tell if this is a parody or glorification, serious or tongue-in-cheek. But it seems to me that someone who writes lyrics like these has a great sense of humor. "Why don't you move to the delta?" This line makes me crack up out loud when I listen to this song. But the music is so layered and expertly done and his voice, sampled and enhanced or not, is extremely listenable. I never write comments to videos, but this video is just hilarious. It's a narcissistic hipster's poor judgment driven self-indulgent fantasy/nightmare. So great!!!!!
Yes. One of my top 3 favorite songs on the album.
The dude just exudes charm and cool, it's quite amazing...
His voice is amazing.
I can't really relate to this song but I've been listening to it for years. Good stuff!
His hat reminds me of the Berenstain Bears lmao
Ok, the song is amazing but the video just adds a hole new level of comic fuckery. Brilliantly twisted, love it
Josh Tilman is so talented.
that's one way to get a free hat
This was absolutely amazing, I wish I could be friends with J. but who wouldn't want to be friends with him?
this is the best thing ive discovered in a long time
Such a great artist, have two of his albums, pure bliss to listen to.
this man is what dreams are made of
Father John Misty: the purveyor of oddly fitting make out songs.
Thats awesome that he decided to use the same location at the end of this video and "Hollywood Forever Cemetery" !!!
This is the best thing we've ever seen, ever.
This is it, the best music video ever made
I remember being very sad when Tillman left Fleet Foxes because I thought he was making a huge mistake. Boy, was I wrong! He has released two great albums and is getting better and better while Fleet Foxes hasn't released nothing new since 2011. I mean, I love Robin Pecknold and all the guys, but Tillman's talent and creative mind is too big to have such a small role in a band.
He had no creative input during the recording for either of their first two albums, he was a live drummer, I think you may be feigning sadness to add drama to your comment. Being sad for a touring drummer leaving a band is absurd to me, were you really that attached to a part anyone with a beard and rhythm could play?
@@PuffBunny1 he played on helplessness blues
@@PuffBunny1 “Josh Tillman - vocals, drum kit, percussion” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helplessness_Blues
Since this comment, the Foxes have given us Shore and A Very Lonely Solstice. Glad they've all found the paths that feel right to them.
I like FJM, but I would drive hours to see Robin and crew. The show two nights ago at the Hollywood Bowl with My Morning Jacket was 💜💜💜
this man is so handsome omfg
Thus song is so good, well written and hilarious.
'Ooooh my God, I swear this never happens' always cracks me up
Genius!
Can't believe how much I love this song
Perfect song. Josh Tillman is beautiful.
A very refreshing man. And the video he made to it is adorable to.
Oh, I just love the kind of woman
Who can walk over a man
I mean like a god damn marching band
Ahhh the beauty of new orleans. Well done for capturing the feeling of living there.
I watch this like every week
I'm going to jump in more pools when I do coke!
I bought this album last year. I love every song.
This needs much more views.
0:45 Father John Misty w/ hat cheers with a "I hope you die."
Pure Gold
Mr. Tillman! Good to see you again!
I just discovered FJM yesterday, listened to this album this morning, and then this pops up?! Weird 😳🙈
+Lauren Sabino The fact that you've only discovered him yesterday brings me great joy. Your life is about to thoroughly improve.
phzyor I've heard Fleet Foxes before!
+Lauren Sabino Same here
+phzyor couldn't agree more.
Been said: to love someone else, you must 1st love yourself ..
lol he sure is loving himself in this! ;-}
This guy is a fucking music genius
Is that the same end location as Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings?
+Brandon Henderson That's what I noticed too. Clever..
+Brandon Henderson yup, youre not the only one thought about it.
+Brandon Henderson Something tells me that was probably due to a budget.
his house , duh
+joshpoe Duh. Because I should know where he lives. You seem like a fun guy.
I can't believe I haven't seen this video before. This is hilarious
I don't know why,but among Josh's skins, this furball long bearded long haired one is my favorite
This video is partially inspired by the LeBron James quote "It is precisely the superficial differences between people who are otherwise alike that inform the hostilities between them."
+Bongo Harry LeBron dropping knowledge
***** 'Tis a joke
***** XD
+Bongo Harry How is that. The song it about him going home with a girl that isn't right for him and it's called the night josh tillman came to our apartment. The video shows this, but instead of the girl it's him instead meeting himself and going home with himself, since the song is about himself. What does that have to do with superficial difference between people? Makes no since what you say
+Russ TheWeddingDJ You should probably tell that to the man who's song it is, because that's his quote bud. www.stereogum.com/1831689/father-john-misty-the-night-josh-tillman-came-to-our-apartment-video/video/
It's definitely a Father John Misty quote.
Sometimes we need to love ourselves a little bit.
That’s the damn truth right there.
Of his best song lyricaly
Now that was a bit different... great video.
That was amazing.
FJM gets me - that's been like my dream for a long time.
God, I love him.

i hate that soulful affectation white girls put on why don't you move to the delta lmao i'm dying.
He's riffing on himself really with that line though
can you explain why you this its so funny?
@@connorm1817 is a white girl who puts on a soulful affectation and should move to the delta
I mean maybe the self critique comes just from the idea that he continues to chase these women which he ultimately feels are vapid but nonetheless give him some type of social status to obtain. That actually makes sense to me and I think that is what is meant when this song is discussed as being a critique of the narrator rather than the woman or women he is describing
@@thebargainbin6020 He did say that he was taken aback by how many people took his side when he is clearly the asshole in this story, in some interview.
I want that hat. Great song
It's just like that episode of Broad City!
That shit actually goes up his nose - Like THAT! Damn! - this IS Mick Fleetwood, Yeah?!
lmao this is pretty good
Is it just me or does the last scene in this look just like the same setting in the last scene of Hollywood forever video?

thumbs up he is good
Perhaps the most INGENIOUS FUCKING VIDEO about the human condition which I have ever observed.
"The human condition" is the most pretentious phrase in the English language.

beautiful music. much love from a fellow tillman

He would rather hang out with himself, not the girl he sings about. Some people call that loneliness, others know it as enlightenment.
