I just bought a fx30 and an a7iv in the last 2 months, i have bmpcc6k pro since way before and the only reason is for travel video, portability and autofocus, fast shooting and photography, but i dare say nothing is better than blackmagic definitely
I use that piggy and i must confess, it is an absolute king. As a pro camera operator i usually put alexas, reds on my shoulder but sometimes in small projects we switch between komodo, fx3 and 6k pro. And another confession we use 6k pro as an action cam on gimbal in big projects combined with alexa. Colorists can match them easily.
Love my 6K Pro!! If you add up all the components of this camera (1500nit monitor, nds, raw recording, etc..) nothing on the market touches it. And above all the image…. Also love my Ursa 12k which is another hard to beat camera for the price.
Yes. However, there are some reasons to go for other systems. Yes it has a 1500nit monitor but it’s still better to have an external monitor that’s larger, can be easily positioned, etc. and for many cameras an Odeyssey or Atomos Recorder solves both the RAW recording AND gives you a very bright 10 bit fully mountable display. Obviously for the price it’s nice, but you still have to rig this thing out to make it truly useable on set.
@@RiceCubeTech oh I agree there are lots of tools for different situations. I also use external monitors for 1st Ac’s, clients, directors etc… but it’s nice to not need to rig this out if I don’t want to since everything is built in, I can simply grab my camera with no cage add a lens and I’m good to go.
Still rocking 6K Gen 1 and the footage is so butter! Highlight rolloff is real nice for a lot of what I do in the builder/architecture space. Still a legit offering and may add a Gen 2 6K (non pro) to the fray if I start doing more 2 camera shoots.
@@TylerEdwards 2 lenses, zero D 12mm Laowa for wides and Sigma 18-35 f1.8 for details. Also I shoot in 3200 iso to push the sensor so you can close down the Aputure and get more in focus. That clean 3200 iso is the secret sauce for darker interiors.
Ya I have a feeling blackmagic is going to blow our minds this year. It’s been a minute since they released something really new (not counting the pocket g2)
Really hoping for a box style camera with a new 6k sensor similar to the ursa 4.6k as this one is gorgeous. Just need more freedom of rigging and some internal NDs and that would be the perfect camera.
@@TylerEdwards probably, but I would assume almost everyone loved the ARRI Mini LF and the Form factor is a huge part why it became so popular :) I would agree that something like the Komodo is love or hate though.
Definitely agree with all of these. I have the G2 (i'm not a fan of the built-in NDs of the pro) and it's just a dream to work with. I also have the 4k and the OG (ehhh i'm not actually a completist! just looks that way) it's just the colors and buttery smooth image of these censors that BM uses and oh yeah, the UI, now they have totally figured out how to do a camera UI!
The 1 selling point of all BMD cameras isnt the workflow nor even the affordability. Its about that filmic organic image and cadence. I'm an editor. I see a lot of footage from various camera systems, from low to high tier. If you want the "Alexa" look and feel but don't feel like taking out a second mortgage on your house BMD is the way to go if IQ in the context of look and feel is important for your storytelling process. It goes beyond a clean image. Many modern cameras can offer a clean image. Hell the top-tier smartphones can even offer that. There's digital clean, and then organic clean. It holds a visceral reaction that instantly clicks. You know it when you see it. As full featured as the competition presents, they constantly struggle to lock in the look and feel of organic, often times still looking digital and overly sharp. There's something very interesting, rich and delightful about a painterly, organic image. BMD cams give you that at a price point that is actually approachable for most ppl. Other than that, BMD cams are a joke to operate for some applications. Usually all the applications the camera wasn't designed for.
I just sold mine. Just going in a different direction, and I have not used it so much lately. But I agree with all that you said. I found it easy to film and post process with Resolve. It has a very clear menu system, and I was able to change my settings quickly with changing lighting. And the monitor is clear, and large! A 5in screen. I never had the blue screen issue with mine. I will miss the built in ND filters. But I may eventually get the URSA.
Great video, Tyler! Would you still recommend the URSA Mini Pro G2 in 2023? Torn between it and the 6K Pro as a new A Cam, and the extra bit of dynamic range and frame rate options, among other things has me leaning more towards the UMP G2, but wanted your personal take as you’ve had extensive experience with both!
If budget allows, I’d skip the g2 and go for the 12K unless you absolutely need prores. Even then I’d run a video assist or shogun and record prores external.
@@TylerEdwards ProRes isn’t a priority, I just shoot BRAW, and I do like having the option of 300fps on the UMPG2. Budget doesn’t allow for the 12k regardless, so if you had to choose between the UMPG2 or the 6K Pro, which would you personally choose between the two? Greatly appreciated and value your opinion!
@@tyronetolentino hard to say because the G2 is essentially end of life. I mentioned the 12K because it is only like $300 or so more than the G2 new. I do like the rolling shutter performance of the G2 better and the fact that it has full size XLR and better IO. It is a great camera, but hard to fully recommend since it is so old.
Thank you for this content. I mainly shoot BMPCC 6k Pro for paid gigs, along side with my GH5. Now I am looking forward to give up my GH5. To have a back up camera (HYBRID) FujiFilm X-H2s I think is the best choice for those who own Sigma Art Lenses (Main) as adapting EF to X with an APSC lens suits it well. And being a hybrid camera you'll have a photo alongside with it where also film simulation is available (good for filming IMO). Been thinking and planning a lot before making a move. Maybe you got something about this idea, what are your opinion. I really see FujiFilm fits well with BlackMagic as of now. I love Lumix, I use Sony and Canon for gigs but I own GH5 and 6k Pro. Let’s do something, I’ll send you my 6k Pro, so that you get 2 of them and you send me the RED Komodo 😁😁😁 Loved those b-rolls, man. Yeah, it’s a great camera mostly for its price and all the things under the hood. Cheers!
As much as I agree with you that this camera is absolutely killer especially for the money and the image quality is unrivalled, my experience of this camera in reality especially in the professional world of video production isn’t that great. I know a number of people that have had some major reliability issues with this camera including, randomly not turning on and having issues when filming with red led lights (I believe due to some shortcuts made on the sensor to keep costs down). It also has terrible rolling shutter and the horrendous battery life means you have to rig it out and I’m sure anyone who has owned a pocket camera can vouch for how difficult that can be. I don’t mean to be too negative but for me these are some issues that really put me off upgrading from my bmpcc 4K, think carefully about how you will use this camera before you buy.
It’s honestly not that difficult to rig this camera but agreed there have been QC issues with BM cameras in the past. I had a 4K die on me but they replaced it without question and all my other BM cams have never had issues and have been on numerous big productions without missing a beat.
IMO, it's not a cinema camera. It doesn't sit well with me that this prosumer camera uses the term cinema camera in its marketing. If this is a cinema camera, then what would you call an Arri Alexa or Sony venice? It uses an EF mount, which is not solid, allowing for lens play and limiting your lens choices massively. It does not easily allow for collaboration. It does not have SDI out, not any standard DTap outs to power accessories like focus motors or wireless video or external monitors. It is designed to be operated by one person. It's a DSLR with better color science. If you are a filmmaker and you are serious about it, you will outgrow this camera extremely fast. It has its own market, it's cheaper than a RED or a Sony FX9 or even the Ursa Mini, but it's not a camera that belongs on a film set. Call it something else like a videographer camera or content creator camera.
We really love the way that you broke down your points and put together this incredible video!

Hard image to beat but the shoot by cams are no slouch either!

Paired with DaVinci this cam is unstoppable, I absolutely love mine, paired with vintage Zeiss lenses it’s just so amazing.

Totally agree!!
I loved this camera. My first Cinema Camera and for the money it's unbeatable. Can't wait for the next BMPCC

Now, I just need BM to make a better body that won’t poop out on my cowboy shoots 😭 I miss that BRAW
For real tho. Braw is awesome. A VV sensor would be the cats pajamas too
It’s a beast! The footage is so nice. And the experience using it!

which gimble you are using for this camera

no photo capability? you can take 1-2sec video files and rack focus and you have a live raw photo
