    As an owner of both the Komodo X and the Pocket 6K Pro, I can confirm that the majority of Blackmagic users aren’t actually complaining about the form factor. While some cinematographers may prefer a box-style Blackmagic camera, the truth is that I would choose the Pocket 6K’s form factor any day over a box-style camera like the Komodo. When using the Komodo, it requires extensive rigging, unlike the convenient setup of the Pocket 6K.
    There’s a unique joy in grabbing your camera, lens, and a few batteries, then heading out to shoot or travel. The Pocket 6K consistently outperforms many modern full-frame mirrorless cameras and entry-level cinema cameras such as the R5c and FX6.
    When considering the balance between price and quality, it’s hard to find a camera that can surpass the Blackmagic 6K, 6K Pro, or G2.

      As an owner of both the OG Komodo and the Pocket 6K Pro, I can confirm a majority of BM users ARE definitely complaining about the form factor. I'm one of them, and it was a big point of discussion amoung myself and my cinematographer friends who dabble in the BM world. I'm not saying it has to be a box, I'm saying it should be a more ergonomic shape for production work with better ports and above, all decent battery life. I've never found the shape of the Pocket camera's useful except in studio work. Ursa is also not a great shape once you put a decent lens on it. BM need to put in some work on this aspect of their camera's. When they get a cinema body design that rivals the quality of their image - Chef's kiss.

    • @matthewhartman7176

      Dude, working pros that use the Pockets all day aren't complaining either. It's mainly the online crowd who pretty much complains about every little thing that's ever released by any manufacturer. When you see this phenomenon, it simply means they've got too much time on their hands, hence not working.
      When you're working, you roll up your sleeves and get the coverage by all means necessary short of illegal. You don't stand there and lament unless you like being asked to leave the set.
      The DNA of a filmmaker is to quickly adapt and improvise. I've seen way too many Grip bring $12 foam core board to set as a bounce to have a different opinion. We're talking mid-large budget. Whoever says filmmakers aren't frugal hasn't been on a working set.
      Producers get callbacks exactly for saving productions money. This idea that productions throw money into the air is a HL stereotype, and better relagated to a cool story.
      The industry itself is all about smoke and mirrors. Audiences and clients absolutely do not care what shape the camera is.

    I really don’t get the complaints about the body. Mostly “RUclips filmmakers” I suppose. In a real production rig for a movie or commercial, you’d have a cage, rail system, wireless feed, follow focus, monitor, time code box etc etc. at the end of the day this thing will still shine in that environment and for such an amazing price. 6k raw internal, full frame, anamorphic modes ( yay 3:2!!) and people STILL COMPLAIN. Be real people. If your project was that important a Blackmagic would not even be in the conversation. You’d be renting ARRI, Venice or higher end RED ( not Komodo). We should be thankful this thing doesn’t cost $10K.

    • @thesavagefilmmaker
      @thesavagefilmmaker  Год назад +5

      Bruh.... I'm not a RUclips filmmaker. I'm a filmmaker who RUclipss! 😅 When you rig it up for real production work, it gets pretty unwieldily and when you strip it down for real production work you're missing essential things like reliable battery life. It's fine to say don't complain and appreciate what it provides, but if we got both the image and a great body we'd have one of the best prosumer camera's on the market. And in fact a camera people might consider as an alternative to Arri's or Venice's when working with smaller budgets. Sounds like something worth asking for.

    • @waveland
      @waveland Год назад

      I’m with you on the body. It’s fine, and no matter how I rig the CC or Pocket cameras, I’m including some sort of DC input so I don’t have to rely on the internal battery. And now that you can buy 99Wh V-mounts which can fit in the palm of your hand, it’s much easier to keep the rig compact even with an external battery. Though the biggest confusion about the shape has always been the tendency to compare BM cameras to stills hybrids, where instead they are production video hybrids. BM always starts with the assumption their cameras live on sticks and will often have access to mains power, in which case the internal battery is seen only as a fail safe if someone kicks the cord out of the wall, or as a way to keep the camera live while hot swapping external batteries. Filmmakers have the luxury of pauses to swap batteries, where in live production every camera has to stay up and running without interruption. It’s a different way of thinking, and for those who embrace the BM philosophy, there’s much less reason to complain-especially if you need to stream some of the time and realize how much remote control is built into the firmware which most cameras can’t do without expensive add-ons.

    • @PopoRamos
      @PopoRamos Год назад

      @@waveland Long gone are the days where I had to bring a minimum of 10 batteries with me on a shoot. Once I embraced external batteries my life became so much easier. I don’t mind the form factor, however I do, from time to time have to engage in awkward conversations explaining to someone why I can’t just snap a picture of them 🤣. As far as the gimbal, I use my S5II with an older much smaller gimbal that I had for years, I don’t see the need to get another gimbal plus a wireless follow focus system for the blackmagic. I’m taking a break from the film maker gear rat race rabbit hole, but I’m sure it’ll be back soon.

We continue to purchase BM products because of the image quality, BRAW and amazing OS... but man the body style and terrible NP battery choice is so utterly frustrating to work with. Nice run down! Still rocking the old 4K, but no real desire to move past that camera, or the Panny S5. Not enough innovation for this new BM camera, at least for me. I know this is a "cinema" camera, but again with so many of its competitors spitting out a comparable image while also offering IBIS and weather sealing, there isn't an ultra-compelling reason to snag this camera unless you're totally in love with the BM look. Battery life is also a real issue - even on the pocket 4K, you pretty much need a rig if you want to shoot all day. With the S5, I can just grab a couple of spares and run out the door. Pro-res absence is also a bummer. Great content as always brother!

There's still something so special about the image I get out of it. In fact, I bought a Fuji XH2S to replace it, thinking it would meet my needs in both photography and film making, but I still prefer the pocket 4k over it. I feel like it is a something in between camera as well.
    Like the S5iiX wich was release before S1Hii or S2H, to not loose people to Sony.
    But personally at the samr price I would go Panasonic because I own the Videoassist 12 G and I have work already with Braw Vlog for S5 org. Which has actually a very nice image.
    If panasonic will pull out soomething crazy with the S1Hii like 6K olpf 120 fps all i ,prores HQ internal,Internal NDs ,no crop mode,raw over hdmi,with PDAF and IBIS...and around 4000 $ well it would be a far superior camera and a Burano for the poor...

Plus there’s a decent chance we’ll get internal eVNDs… and the L-mount. Hard to know exactly what Sony will bring, but I’m certain it will impress.

      There’s a fundamental misunderstanding about BM when it comes to these “pocket” category cameras. They design these as hybrids emerged from the live production world, rather than as a stills-hybrid design. From that point of view there’s nothing particularly interim about the CC 6k. As with all the cameras in this class, you can drop one on a set of sticks, plug it into an ATEM switcher, and Bob’s your uncle-instant production camera with a 5” screen. And then with a little rigging you can build from that a good quality cinema camera, which will soon have very affordable camera-to-cloud services built right into the body. Does anyone in the film world offer the ability to upload proxies with nothing but a USB-C connection and a hotspot or cellphone? Maybe the X-H2 can upload to Frame if you provide wi-fi, though Frame can quickly become an expensive add on for small production companies. The BM Cloud will be much more affordable. Anyway, I realize that few filmmakers also do live-switched events streaming, which in my thinking is the source of so much confusion about these cameras. They are an entirely different sort of hybrid, which may or may not be a selling point, but it does begin to clear up some of the confusion about the fundamentals of the design.

    How much is Black Magic paying you to call it "exciting" and "cinematic" ? ROFL
    I'm just messing with you. I don't mind the form factor for what I do with the camera, I'd love to have a ff, but I won't give up the convenience of the internal ND's.

      Internal ND's are much less of an issue with a good mattebox and variable ND. In fact I don't miss that feature at all. And rest assured blackmagic will never pay me, because I'm still critical of there work.

      @@thesavagefilmmaker oh I'm sure if I was filming things anything near a professional level I'd be right there with you. For what I do with it, honestly the 6k pro is exactly what I need. If I could just put a ff sensor in this camera I'd be happy as a lark. Lol
      But - I don't use a mattebox. I do have a variable nd but it's so loose that it's practically useless. Probably because I didn't spend alot of money on it.

      The NDs weren't Schneider level NDs anyway.@@thesavagefilmmaker

      Just because you don’t like one aspect of something doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate the upsides mate. Reviews should highlight both aspects of a product. I’m a fan of Star Wars, I don’t like everything about it 🤣

    Is it just me or the pocket crop in image looks rather more cinematic than the 6k full frame

      Very different looks, very different lenses. All depends on your personal preferences.
