And like some have pointed out in the comments; I forgot to mention some other cool features like Open Gate, Gyro Stabilization, ... oh, and you get Resolve Studio for free. 😬 But again, doesn't mean this is the perfect camera for you or the best camera in the world... NOT AT ALL! I still think the FX3 is a better choice for most people... and there are plenty of other great cameras. Just use your brain, people (but not your TikTok-brain). 😎🔥
6k is wayyy cheaper than fx3 and likely among the top 3 cameras around $1k that can beat FX3 in terms of affordability, value, image quality/flexibility, etc. I returned my fx3.
What everyone fails to mention about the design (even yourself) is that Blackmagic have included a fully functional live production camera inside. This includes support for a TV style zoom rocker and focus demand. This also explains why they put such a big screen on the back. TV camera ops don’t need a flippy screen. There’s no question the old-school DSLR vibe looks dated from an industrial design perspective. On the other hand they made sure the EVF and battery grip were compatible, which is not a bad thing. In the end, BM is not flashy in their approach. At the same time, when you compare this system to anything else capable of full frame 3:2 filming, I don’t think there’s anything else which comes close. A used Sony Venice (version 1) is still $20k and a monster to rig. Where the CC is a marvel of miniaturization by comparison.
Well said. And as someone who once owned the BMPCC4K, I miss BRAW. I went to Sony for the autofocus. And I agree that the image coming out of BM cameras looks cinematic.
I also wish he mentioned what this camera's main competition is, and how much it costs - is the Sony Venice the closest competitor? If so that's crazy.
@@AllThingsFilm1why don't you switch over to Lumix and a video assist? Probably the closest thing to a black magic camera with phase-detect detect autofocus
I think the astonishing thing is just how incredibly bad the industrial design is. It's not like the competition is sexy, but this thing just looks like a $29 camera for kids that you wouldn't be surprised to find in a toys'r'us in the year 1980. You could literally pay someone $50 on fivr for a better design sketch than this thing. It's like a train wreck that you can't look away from.
Thanks for the honest review and pointing out a lot of things other content creators seem to be obsessed with. Yes it’s not a vlogging camera it’s an affordable professional camera and teamed up with DaVinci resolve like it’s supposed to be you get an amazing combination!
The closest competition, at least in terms of price and image quality, is the Panasonic S5iiX, which a lot of people compare this camera to. But the internal RAW, large screen, Blackmagic workflow make it stands on its own.
Honestly! I think my BlackMagic Cinema Pocket 4K, for the type of work we do and the intended delivery format, will still do its 'job' for years to come. Thank you and have a nice weekend.
I put a 35mm Canon CNE lens on a BMCC6K in a DJI gimble and the shots are beautiful. Add in the Davinci work flow and it makes life easy. Yeah it doesn't have the low light range of the others but I doubt most people don't get close to actually using that in their projects.
its been 15 years that I'm working as cameraman and now as a DP and to be honest, it's very rare I have to shoot in low lights situation. I think people are freaking out about low lights range but who absolutely need that range in real life scenarios? Not me and not the majority of filmmakers/videographers I know. I think Blackmagic did an awesome job with this camera (even if it's not in a box shape).
The key thing you said is that it is made to be a cinema camera. Something I would love to see in a future iteration would be able to shoot at least 60fps and maybe some help on that rolling shutter in open gate. I know gyro stabilization gets rid of a lot if not all, but then you have to think about cropping the image the entire time you're shooting. This will be a camera I will skip for now since I don't feel the need for full frame and I'm adding the Ursa Broadcast G2 to my Pocket 4K in the meantime since internal NDs and a 6K Ursa is what I've been more in the market for. As well as it being a good overall camera for events, docs and narrative work.
You forgot to mention the star feature, OPEN GATE. It is a reframing option beast. Depending on your aapect ratio you can adjust for headroom, or do temporal reframe motion without losing resolution. The other star feature it is FULL FRAME, which is better in low light and it is ideal for anamorphic lenses. You use the open gate full frame to shoot anamorphic and you get better resolution than the BMPCC6K Pro using anamorphic. You might descrbe it as a great lateral option. I hope they produce a Ursa 12K with a full frame chip (PL & L). I can dream.
Yes, this is the main reason I purchased this camera as it pairs perfectly with my Sirui anamorphic lenses. I shoot only open gate and the work flow in Davinci is fantastic.
@@rickseigh460 I agree. I was only trying to correct the impression that full-frame equals better low-light performance, but in this case, it is not. Which I still need to understand.
I would argue that for me (I bought this camera last week because it was $1020 off), this camera *is* an upgrade from my (original) bmpcc6k. I really miss the EF mount, but I'll get over that in the long term (despite the many very high end canon lenses I own), and I like the extra wide angle this made possible with the same (adapted) 16-35 lens I had mounted on the old camera. When I loaded the settings from the pocket 6k on this camera, everything just worked including my color corrections for the HDMI output for my ATEM mini extreme -- except that I needed to do some very minor menu diving to fill 16:9 instead of 3:2.
I have the original 6K with the Tilta screen mod and man that thing is a freaking joy to use. All the footage looks great. Just simply incredible. Even out of focus shots look great. It is amazing. Looking at getting the internal speed booster so it will be very close to a full frame. Its smaller form factor makes it feel like a DSLR. I use no rig, there is a terabyte SSD on board, a spare battery in the pocket and a strap for support is all I need. After using a Canon hybrid and running into countless operational confusions it is a dream to have a camera that puts everything you need exactly where you need it. I FREAKIN LOVE IT.
I would love to see two things - comparison of the talking head in your studio between these two cameras and some braw footage to download and play in DaVinci
Have you considered trying Kipon's EF-L speed booster with the 6k FF? Allows you to shoot 4k 60fps 17:9 with extra stop of light and better rolling shutter around 15ms while still maintaining FF coverage.

I recently purchased the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, which features a full-frame sensor. I'm planning to use it for making a film. Do you think this camera is a good choice for cinematic production? Any tips or insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Because I'm so disappointed, we see a lot of videos saying this is not good and I'm very sad about this election
Perfect summation of this camera! I had the chance to rent one last week and had a lot of fun with it. I'm mostly a Sony A7S II shooter, but I knew going in that I wouldn't have all the same benefits of that camera in this one. I'm so spoiled by the Sony's stabilized sensor and EVF for guerilla style shooting :P I have to say though, the footage looks beautiful. It's the best footage I've captured with a Blackmagic camera, and if I had the cash, I'd buy one tomorrow. For now I'll just keep enjoying my Pocket 4K.
So almost a year later, i see there are still so many people "misunderstanding" this camera by trying to outfit it with every accessory under the sun (this doesn't make great content-brains/creativity makes great content-of course u know this LOL) in an effort to combat this mania about the wrong uses for the 6K Pro we also made a little short video recently because it was driving us nuts. The Blackmagic 6K Pro shines for what it looks like it was intended for and that is a very ergonomic handheld pro cinema camera, not a studio production beast which has now become slow to use because of of those ergonomic features are now covered up by cages/wiring etc etc. extra monitors etc etc. LOL. Run and gun style docs shooting high quality 6K with a vest full of spare batteries, not with a ginormous V mount sucker hanging off the back turning it into a "chunk" you can't hold. It just goes to prove there are many who think putting this in a cage is the way forward. Get the right camera for that. Plus as you say it's def not a camera for filming yourself making videos for RUclips.

Truth be told I never got a pocket 6k pro because one simple reason. Lens mount. More and more lenses including my fave lenses have been stepping away from EF in favor of mirrorless lens mounts. So I been rocking the Pocket 4k this entire time. While full frame is cool. What has me sold is them going away from the dated EF mounts for the Lecia L mounts. So that's why I am sold on upgrading from the 4k.
Hey Joris! I didn't notice you talking about it in your video but I was wondering how is your camera and its fan? I think it's a super nice camera and got mine recently. I wasn't expecting it to have so considerable fan noise. So I'm wondering if its normal or maybe I should send mine for a check-up.
Great camera. Not for me though. I want more frame rates and less shutter lag. FF is great, but not essential. I was hoping BMD would be coming out with more in-house sensor cameras - URSA nano would've been my perfect camera... I have been using for P4K for 3.5 years and still love it but want more detail and higher frame rates...
The branding did not help though. This is clearly a successor of the Pocket Cinema Camera line, and it should have been branded as such, and reserving a new line for when they are ready to launch a camera that really is a step above the Pocket and below the URSA. IMHO their box camera was just not ready in time, and they we forced to do this weird stepping stone model. By their own admission, in this form factor it is not feasible to combine a low flange depth full frame sensor and ND. So they HAVE to make a box camera anyway. But i totally agree with your analysis: It is a great camera for the price. Just not what people have really been waiting for and need. The times have changed. The competition has stepped up. And now both RED and Sony offer better form factors, eNDs, and PDAF. I love BM, but i wont buy another non-box camera, or one without a good ND or eND. For many, autofocus is also a big must, at least for gimbal work. So while the camera is great, it just is not what the market in the majority demands.
Except those people who put image at the top of pyramid....for a price these cameras on tripod are unbeatable. In fact on that same tripod the image is better than many cameras 3x as expensive.
@@armchairsportsman4108 Again, it IS a good camera. And i am sure some folks like you will happily buy it and be well served. Just not the many many people that fall into the category that i mentioned above.
Autofocus is pretty much avoided in the professional film industry, which is why he mentions content creators vs. cinematographers. Its perceived as the equivalent of “auto lighting”. Sure, it might be useful if you don’t have a particular plan for the scene, but focusing is as intentionally used in the film industry as the temperature of your lighting. Most focus points are preplanned and marked up with good reason, hence the job of a Focus Puller. With autofocus, you cut of an essential creative “limb”, and it’s only really useful for situations where you don’t have/need a plan; often vlogging and/or journalism.
@@whengrapespop5728 I dont dispute that autofocus is not used in feature film productions; But does ANYONE believe that any production above a film school project uses a 3000$ BM camera, instead of a true cinema camera from a rental house?? There is a reason Sony is putting AF & IBIS in their Burano, which costs 7-8 times as much. A significant margin of the market for everything except feature films demand this, and especially the market that can only afford 3K for a camera. The biggest market for BM potentially by FAR is the "creator" market. Followed by run and gun documentary, wedding, corporate and those markets are dominated by Sony, Canon and RED with cameras that ALL have AF, and many now also IBIS. Your or my personal needs are NOT what the market wants, and it looks drastically different from the market BM was entering over a decade ago.
I wonder if they will release an URSA 16k Full Frame… that would be interesting, getting closer and closer to digital IMAX. 5 to 10 years from now, we’ll be there and camera would have reach full technological maturity, probably with integrated LiDAR autofocus and all bells and whistles… I just can’t wait!
Dated design yes, 90’s? No way. As someone that was shooting in the 90’s, we shot on gigantic cameras. Even the late 90s Canon XL-1s were big in comparison. The DSLR body style came into play after the release of the Canon 5D mark ii (2008) If this had a 90’s camera body aesthetic, BM would go out of business. Lol
@@RadishHead29 You misunderstood. I simply said it looks ugly like a point & shoot FILM camera from the 90's, google that and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. I did not compare it to video cameras of that era.
I understand what is said here and its specific use case are valid. I have rented out BMPCs and they are gorgeous to use and the outputs are amazing! Yet, at this time, age and forward technology, come on Blackmagic Design with their amazing brain cells needs a reboot (IMO) and do far better than this. I really do hope they evolve 😁 ~ oh btw since we are now in the L mount alliance, the not so perfect Lumix S5IIx did the impossible with an affordable price tag too, so why Blackmagic design can't with a couple of Benjamins over? I am just saying...
ProRes it's not RAW, ProRes in itself is already a compression not 100% raw; yes is less compressed depending the type of ProRes but it applies some kind of compression. BRAW it's pure raw
Those people complaining don't know anything about filmmaking only about showing off with no examples to back up their claims LOL Of course YT is full of this. The 6K Pro was not intended to be used how mist are showing it on YT, covered in cages and all sorts of unnecessary gear-that doesn't make one a cinematographer and or even a filmmaker. Content is king, always has been.
Thank you for a good, informative video. Likewise, my brother would agree with a lot of your ranting. It is for a specific market and it is amazing at what is does. God bless and have a great day.
Uh, should of been titled the Most understood camera. Everyone understands this camera and compares it to other cameras in its price range. To Claim FX3 is not a Cinema Camera like This Pocket 6K is crazy to me considering "The Creator", Nuff said. 🤦
"Please help me out; I'm really confused. I recently bought this camera to create high-quality cinematic films and short films. However, I've seen many comments and videos saying it’s not suitable for filmmaking. What should I do? Should I sell it and get the 6K Pro instead? What lenses and filters should I use? I really need your advice."
So tired of BLACKMAGIC APOLOGISTS.. Yea sure it doesn't have Prores, NDs, IBIS, autofocus, swivel screen, cube form etc. but hey it's a "cinema camera" and "for this price" we should all just say thank you :/ Honestly I love my original BMPCC4K but it's time to step up and BM are waaay behind
This camera isn't for me that's for sure. The file size on these are ungodly massive. I had the pocket 4K and it's meant for videographer not a hybrid shooters.
at the end of the day: NO ONE would be able to identify what camera shot what in a project, Just A Bad or good Movie/director or bad or good Story/Actor a bad or good editor/colorist (UNLESS FOOTAGE SIDE BY SIDE)
A few things you can try Work out your arms. Change the shutter speed. Use wider lenses when hand held. Buy heavier lenses. I notice if im going hand held. It's easier to control a camera with this build size if Im useing a lens like the 7artisans Vision cine lenses where it's metal body is pretty heavy for it's size. Going hand held on lenses the wider you go the less it will pick up on jitters. Try something on par of 24MM. If you go 50MM or higher on a camera like this. It's not going to be easy. And for working out. If you build muscle in your arms it will be easier to keep that camera still even if it's light.
As a huge Blackmagic fan...this camera is a disappointment. Design and build, lack of ND, Rolling Shutter is awful, low light isn't great, IR filter isn't great, lack of frame rates, horrendous battery life, and the list just goes on and on. Full frame isn't enough and every camera in 2023/2024 shoots beautiful images. Really hoping BM listens to all the negative about this camera from its users.
Then when they add every single thing that is listed and the camera shoots up to 4,000- 8000 People are gonna be like "Wtf why is it so expensive this isnt the black magic I know"
And like some have pointed out in the comments; I forgot to mention some other cool features like Open Gate, Gyro Stabilization, ... oh, and you get Resolve Studio for free. 😬 But again, doesn't mean this is the perfect camera for you or the best camera in the world... And also GREAT feature in this Full-Frame is the Open Gate capability! ✌
💯💥
Am i the only one who loves the design of it?
Noob question. What is the proper CST and or BM-Lut for this camera in DaVinci Resolve? I am trying to grade some footage. Thanks.
i use wide gamut 4/5 : film gen 5
Thanks. Works for me.@@RafalGendarz
Hey Joris! I didn't notice you talking about it in your video but I was wondering how is your camera and its fan? I think it's a super nice camera and got mine recently. I wasn't expecting it to have so considerable fan noise. So I'm wondering if its normal or maybe I should send mine for a check-up.
Thanks for the review. Answered a lot of questions :)
the pyxis gives people the cube design, but im still going for this one in video bc of the screen
whats the 1080p hdmi out look like?
How would it stack against the FX30?
Both are great however very different.
@@JorisHermans Would you say for a normal youtube vlogger, it would be better not to pay 1grand plus, but rather get other gear instead?
@@celpabedn for a RUclips vlogger 👉🏻 FX30 💯
@@JorisHermans Any really good reason?
Vlogging is pretty much impossible with the BMCC, no continuous autofocus, no ibis, huuuge files, ...
Agree your point , but I hope they could put the useless selfie record button to the left side of the camera......
Interesting points, thanks 👍
Great camera. Not for me though. I want more frame rates and less shutter lag. FF is great, but not essential. I was hoping BMD would be coming out with more in-house sensor cameras - URSA nano would've been my perfect camera... I have been using for P4K for 3.5 years and still love it but want more detail and higher frame rates...
is the fan super loud or is it just my bad luck :(?
Same problem here! Did u find any answer?😢
@@mizomizo845 I exchanged it for a different model
Great video!
Thank you
it's perfect for low budget narrative filmmaking.
thanks 🎉🎉🎉
Honestly people complain about the body but the screen is amazing, you’re saving in buying an external monitor
Agreed. And people always complain about something, right? Human nature, I guess 🤷🏻♂️
It has the design aesthetic of a point & shoot film camera from the 90's
Dated design yes, 90’s? No way. As someone that was shooting in the 90’s, we shot on gigantic cameras. Even the late 90s Canon XL-1s were big in comparison. The DSLR body style came into play after the release of the Canon 5D mark ii (2008) If this had a 90’s camera body aesthetic, BM would go out of business. Lol
@@RadishHead29 You misunderstood. I simply said it looks ugly like a point & shoot FILM camera from the 90's, google that and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. I did not compare it to video cameras of that era.
TNX
Blackmagic has that soimething in the images that i love more than any other cameras! and for the price!!!!!!!
I totally agreed with your point
yeah you could have started by saying there's no IBIS 😮💨
Cube? They can buy a Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera G2.
I am just saying...
hi, we want tutorial of stomp video in davinci resolve not just with text , but with fast video clips
Nobody as been complaining it’s noiser then the FX3.
Users, like myself, have been complaining it’s noisier then the original pocket 4k and pocket 6k
With NR in Resolve it’s a non issue.
This not not upgrade, this is another full frame line up ❤
Dag Joris, je spreekt bijna perfect Engels (Amerikaans).Maar toen ik de eerste beelden zag van de straatwerken wist ik het meteen. Dit is Belgie...
i'm surprised you mentionned that you prefer the IQ of this cam compared to the a7siii. I mean it's so obvious :)
the fx3 almost has no place on the market. no luts its missing everything.
ProRes it's not RAW, ProRes in itself is already a compression not 100% raw; yes is less compressed depending the type of ProRes but it applies some kind of compression. BRAW it's pure raw
You are so hilarious 😂 and I enjoy every video because it not feel scripted and most importantly informative 😉
Now the Pyxis has been announced, people complain that this is not the form factor... I don't get people
Those people complaining don't know anything about filmmaking only about showing off with no examples to back up their claims LOL Of course YT is full of this.
Great review, Joris - always appreciate your honesty 🙏🤘
#cinematic 🤣📸
Hey man, did you experience horizontal banding issues with the 6K FF?
Haven't noticed anything yet. Noise at ISO 400, 800 and 3200 is all evenly spread out. Will check at other ISO levels. 🫡
hmmmmmmm. here i am few months later........looking at it on BH going for $1575..........time for me to pull the trigger on this?maybe.
What lens should i use with this for short film content
Finally some one point out how dumb the noise argument is.

Uh, should of been titled the Most understood camera. Everyone understands this camera and compares it to other cameras in its price range. To Claim FX3 is not a Cinema Camera like This Pocket 6K is crazy to me considering "The Creator", Nuff said. 🤦
100% this was a stupid short sided comment on his part. You can tell this review was done for a total fanboy-ism as opposed to true professionalism.
It's all about .... Anamorphic
No, I don't have all my brain cells on all the time.
So tired of BLACKMAGIC APOLOGISTS.. Yea sure it doesn't have Prores, NDs, IBIS, autofocus, swivel screen, cube form etc. but hey it's a "cinema camera" and "for this price" we should all just say thank you :/
Honestly I love my original BMPCC4K but it's time to step up and BM are waaay behind
It’s not very difficult to beat the look of Sony. I will never buy a Sony camera.
its really not that its not a cube.
Its that it looks and feels like Matel or Tonka made it.
Dang. That cube is ugly and ungainly. Certainly can't fit in the hand well.
It's not a photo camera...
the IQ not ugly
Your screen is still going to fall off, lol.
Screens have fallen off of these cameras?
they should rebrand to : Blackmagic no new Design
This camera isn't for me that's for sure. The file size on these are ungodly massive. I had the pocket 4K and it's meant for videographer not a hybrid shooters.
You think Braw is bad? get a rig that can shoot cinema DNG.
We know this lol 😂
FIRST 😊
at the end of the day: NO ONE would be able to identify what camera shot what in a project, Just A Bad or good Movie/director or bad or good Story/Actor a bad or good editor/colorist (UNLESS FOOTAGE SIDE BY SIDE)
You cannot go handheld with this camera, the image looks jittery AF unless you add significant weight to your setup.
All the shots in this video are handheld, no weight added 🙃
A few things you can try
Work out your arms.
@@JorisHermansStabilized in post? Also what focal length lens? I sold my BMPCC because of the micro jitters. Drove me nuts
@@Breonnick I just switched to a camera with IBIS and I'm good now.
@@ejays99which camera did you switch to?
