The reality is that the Game Awards would never allow Wukong or Stellar Balde to actually win. These games were only part of the show because last year the removal of Hogwarts sparked way too much controversy, and they didn't want to get in that again. But, they made sure these games would not win, even Stellar Blade didn't get a single prize.
Exactly. Wukong winning was never in the works due to the controversy spread by IGN and bcos people don't want to be associated with that in any way. But Geoff Keighley wanted to expand to the Chinese audience as well, so he threw them a bone with the Action and Player's Choice awards. In the original text, the developer expressed his disappointment with this result in a humorous and even self-ridiculing way. Anyone who understands Chinese and understands the Chinese Internet will not regard this text as him criticizing or being arrogant. There are too many irresponsible social accounts trying to take things out of context to criticize developers for being arrogant, which is simply not true. There is also a rumor that former IGN editor Alanah Pearce said that she saw someone among the developers crying. It should be noted that she was sitting in the first row and the developers were sitting in the fifth row. She may not even be able to tell which Asian guys are the developers, no one else could corroborate her claims, yet she was eager to tell her audience, spreading rumors. As cameras panned over developers, they also smiled and clapped for Astrobot. Once again, a large amount of social media is spreading this and saying developers are crybabys and arrogant. (update: ex IGN editor Charles Young said he was with Wukong devs the whole night and no one was CRYING) I think the excessive disappointment shown by the developers is related to their experience. They put everything into it for 7 years, only to be falsely accused of being misogynists halfway through, which was later clarified to be another translation error. Many Asians watched Journey to the West as children and hoped that Wukong would win the best game of the year. The developers shouldered the expectations of many people, but in the end it didn’t get it. Wukong is not even woke or anti-woke, it’s just a good game made with passion. But it was passively involved in the confrontation between the two political camps and was used as a tool. The game and the devs do not deserve these slandering and hate
Asmon is right about everything in the end. There is no incentive to vote for Black Myth Wukong unlike gacha games which can not only give rewards but always have a more dedicated fanbase. Wukong despite the constant slander from journalism, won out in the end to be the choice of PLAYERS The fact that the first Chinese AAA game had this outcome is scary. What has the West come to?
Two cents here from someone who lived in China and has a couple of Chinese friends: it’s actually embarrassing how many people are taking his statement out of context and jumping on conclusions without even bothering to actually read the complete post (not even the translated version). First off, Feng’s comment about ‘friggin coming for nothing’ with the ‘TT’ as a crying emoji, was literally him talking in gap-Moe fashion, like an average Chinese male talking online. It was something along the lines of ‘hot damn I made a fool of myself, SAD [crying face]’. It was an actual self-roasting. That’s your first level of context lost in translation. Then, if you look at his post as a whole w/o cherrypicking sentences, it’s quite obvious that ‘coming for nothing’ statement wasn’t his point at all? He directly went on to say how every other dev in his team was trying to give him a reality check, being quite pessimistic about the prospects of things (something rooted in Chinese culture with people overly humble to a fault), leading him to say, hey, you know what, I’d RATHER be overconfident, because ‘if you’re only confident when you’re winning, then it’s not confidence, rather a repetition of the established fact’. That over there WAS his point. He was posting to address to the monkey fans in China, many of whom were frustrated at the result, with lots apparently being attacked by domestic haters of the game (and from what I heard there were even fans of gatcha games angry with BMW winning player’s choice) due to the result. He was cheering his fans up, telling them it’s not wrong to be passionate about their game, because even himself had high hopes and ended up disappointed. Was it a little lacking in the PR department? arguably yes, but all I see was him not placing himself as a CEO but rather just a passionate gamer and game dev. For all this to be misread as being cocky and a bad sport is simply beyond me. It’s honestly sad how the ex-IGN lady made up the story to go alongside this whole debacle in order to get clicks😂
It is kind of obvious they're never going to speak the truth, much less acknowledge a Chinese company's first foray into Triple A actually beat some of the established companies in other parts of the world, much less the West. This is them trying their best to ignore the transfer kid in class they are jealous of with good grades and is actually popular and attempting to shame into obedience, multiple times. If anything this year's TGA has cemented itself as a Self wanking session for western corporates and it's affiliation who are in the cabal as well (Looking at you Sony).
Well yeah. And if every decent game would be on steam, that would be the only one game award we need. However, thats not true for some indecent reasons.
Awards are just entertainment to me from a consumer standpoint. It's recognition from the game makers' standpoint, of course - but the ultimate recognition, are simply sales figures, active player stats, and word of mouth. I simply vote with my money, I keep playing the games that I enjoy, and when encounter similar minds, I praise the games I enjoy, and enjoy the conversations about them. Time is much better spent that way instead of hate-watching or hate-posting or any of that sort. I always draw a line on whether I've watched or engaged enough about the bad stuff and go back to enjoying the good stuff in life.
First two videos Asmon reacted to her, I gave her benefit of the doubt. Third one I didn't watch beyond the first 5 minutes. She's exactly what you imagine an IGN employee to be.
I personally did not like Wukong, it just wasnt my type, but i still have great respect for the developers for creating an amazing game. they won the game awards hands down without a doubt, we need to remember that corporate entities MEAN LESS than the PEOPLES CHOICE in anything in the modern day. Gacha games in my opinion should not even be considered in these types of awards due to incentive driven votes, they should be banned from such things. a game is a game, not a marketplace.
Seriously.. I've even got someone out for my blood at the charity store we volunteer at. Dude hates me with a passion and I've literally done nothing to him, barely even talk to the guy. People always gotta create problems..
People really forgetting there were four other nominees besides Wukong and Astro Bot. They lost as well, and they probably felt bad as well. It's okay to be disappointed when you lose. Congrats to Astro Bot for winning, and to Wukong devs, Metaphor devs, Balatro devs, FF Rebirth devs, and Elden Ring devs for even being nominated. That's an incredible achievement alone
To me, winning the players choice is more important than GOTY. That means the people who matter the most to a company, chose your game over any other. The only difference is a title that can be used to sell more units. Maybe a bad take, but just how I see it.
Objectively, yeah. Players can have dumb opinions at times, but it is nothing compared to the absolute idiocy and incompetence of most games journalists. So players choice is really the only award worth anything at this point.
Reminder that every few years, Alana Pearce makes a video about how professional game critics opinions are no more important than asking anyone off the street about the game, because the ratings are literally just all about how the critic felt about it, in an explicit effort to defend the critic's numeric rating system.
They won Players Voice because THEY HAD TO in order to nullify any rumor/suspicion of Chinese hate, that's literally the only award CN got, all to save public face.
0:29 To be fair, it’s a common translating mistake. It’s quite common for beginners to take every word too literally which is why it gets confusing when stuff like jokes, sarcasm and slang comes into play. Either that or the translation was out of malicious intentions which considering the hate against this game, is equally, if not, more likely to be the real explanation for that mistranslation.
I enjoy this game and have manged to be unbothered by all this and will continue to do so. Not all of us reside in some permanent hyperbaric salt chamber, and life is hella busy.
The funny part is, even if HE DID CRY, it wouldn't make him wrong? He could have been emotional that he put sm hardwork into his game and it still didn't win. What are people malding over?
Even if it's true, I genuinely don't understand what is wrong with crying. If I poured my years and effort into a project, I certainly want it to win all awards. It's respectful to congratulate the award winner, but I certainly will feel disappointed to see it not win the GOTY award
The entire narrative was false though. The problem here was that no one was actually crying. It was made up bs to dunk on Wukong and their devs. It’s called misinformation or a fabricated story.
We have one youtube content creator claiming that she saw Wukong dev team member crying. No one else, and not even any camera footage was able to capture that. She was sitting in the front row while that dev team was sitting at the 5th row. Unless there is more evidence, it's just really hard to take that at face value
10% player vote. 90% selected jury no one can see or know. Corruption, decadence, boring, and ultimately futile in the game industry. The Game Awards is disconnected from the others who play countless games that are never mentioned nor even given ratings from IGN and many websites. I've been able to try out fan-translated games made 20 years ago that were never brought to the US. Some are hidden gems. Countless Indie games are made by the few that are never praised. Meanwhile, many AAA game studios begin layoffs or closures as they see profit losses for the companies/shareholders or possibly sold off to be broken up. It is truly an odd time period for gaming.
There is no incentive for voting for any of the three gacha games up there. Some players and others just assumed they would get something if they won, they don't get anything for winning that category. Genshin also didn't give rewards for winning that category, players just confused it with something else.
I mean, Black Myth Wukong managed to win awards and actually made headline after review for its awesomeness comes through. So this is a hige step forward, it might not win GOTY but its a huge step forward for Game Science.
2:00 the problem is that they don't get recognized by the media through that, media holds the power. it is the consumer that gives them that power. and that is devastating to reputation and prestige to the novice looking to grow the brand or business.
i do want to point out that players choice award perhaps would have been different if there was only 1 gacha game so the votes didn't have a split audience, but honestly GG to black myth wukong, still very deserved 🕶

I'd really like to know why Alanah is in the front row. She isn't even at Sony anymore and even when she was, she was a junior writer. Possibly didn't even contribute in any major way to anything but she is up there with the GOTY winners, the father of Playstation and in front of actual developers who earned it. That's so messed up.

Stellar Blade would win a prize if there were a new category called The Sexiest Game of the Year or The Sleaziest Game of the Year.
Exactly. Wukong winning was never in the works due to the controversy spread by IGN and bcos people don't want to be associated with that in any way. But Geoff Keighley wanted to expand to the Chinese audience as well, so he threw them a bone with the Action and Player's Choice awards.
Just think of how villainized JK Rowling has become solely bcos she didn't want T-Women to compete against biological women.

(update: ex IGN editor Charles Young said he was with Wukong devs the whole night and no one was CRYING)
I think the excessive disappointment shown by the developers is related to their experience.

Western media has almost completely fallen. Why do U think ppl are playing Chinese gachas nowadays in these large numbers.
Better journalism than the “journalists”

Sell a player choice winners edition.
I mean, even after winning GOTY, Astrobot won't even dream of selling as many copies as Wukong.
Of course it' matters more, we're all *always* regarded player reviews as being more relevant than critical reviews.
Objectively, yeah. Players can have dumb opinions at times, but it is nothing compared to the absolute idiocy and incompetence of most games journalists. So players choice is really the only award worth anything at this point.
@@kaiogiovanni Astro bot sitting in the fucking dumps with not even 2 mil copies sold lmao

Nah, great capable people like Feng Ji won't cry over small things like TGA like that.

Definitely some rough edges, but a genuine surprise for me how invested to learn the background of the story(to thus learn about the journey to the west),and it also helped me realize why said novel had such a massive impact on manga/anime.
And east culture and belief
2:10 is what baldy says true? the mihoyo players will get an incentive if they won?
Yes, they give "ingame cash" when they win stuff.
@@jvbteixeira kinda surprised then that non of the mihoyo games won. considering how huge the fanbase is
@@Garrett938I'm surprised Genshin didn't, tho Idk why it was even in there in the first place. Zenless Zone Zero is considered pretty average, and Wuthering Waves isn't Mihoyo.
Also yeah there's rewards but they're not so insanely good that I'd vote for them just 'cause I play some of the games lmao
They did it with Nikke when it won #1 on the play store, basically the gacha people actually have to vote or else they wont get more free spins
In the case of players voice category they don't give anything for winning that award. They only give something for nomination or winning main awards based on jury vote like best on going and best mobile game.
