As incisive and fresh as ever, this is an absurdly good analysis of the present. And he’s not shrinking from calling attention to one’s own complicity as someone too deeply implicated in a discourse to be able to see outside it. Can’t wait for the book!
I tend to stay away from polemics and read more academic works - which run parallel to Mishras critiques. But I have to say he has certainly captured the zeitgeist from the perspective of the global south (and some in the north too), voices that have been largely ignored but much needed. I think we're coming to the end of the Wests pretensions to universalism, to models of progress based on Western history and political philosophy. People should really stop catastrophizing, it's not the end of the systems we've built, least democracy or Western culture. What's really happening is a pluralisation of ways of being and living in the world. Thing's aren't working for a good majority of people on the planet, and they're finally getting together to ask why and what can be done. As I live on the same planet, I'd like to be part of the conversation. A very thought provoking book Pankaj, thank you.
This title doesn't do Pankaj justice. We speak of 'more' democracy but it can manifest in so many different ways. He hits the nail on the head when referring to how we are educated and the biases encouraged. Democracy is potentially dangerous when those who vote aren't able to interpret the relevant information or are not shown the information that is required upon which to make a decision. Personality politics is toxic democracy.
the private collection of wealth has existed since humans began existing. a cave man wanted a better cave. a pirate wanted more treasure. a soviet union citizen wanted a car/bigger home. i mean to think that private collection of wealth is a western idea is insane. it's a human idea that has been around for a very long time and will be around until everyone is happy with what they have and don't want more, which is a long way of yet.
Mishra ignores the socialist aspects of the far Right, as if there had never been a National Socialist People's Party. The left doesn't have a monopoly on collectivism; it merely operates under red flags rather than under the swastika. You could argue that as many young people are attracted to the right as to the left, and more would be once the right learns how to package itself more attractively. National sentiment is on the rise, the center is shrinking, the contest is on the fringes.
Learning from China despite its authoritarianism, human rights violation and environmental degradation just because of their economic growth? And then, how can you stand up and criticise the West for liberalism and free-market? Because the material prosperity of US came entirely from Free Market and Liberal Democratic traditions. The problem was that it wasn't entirely fair. But if you can say there's to be learned from China, despite its failing, Then US and West should go more enthusiastically in favour of what had brought then immense material prosperity
Western civilization is great for whites and not so great for non-whites. Nazis imported western colonial policies to the continetal Europe. China and the East joined free trade at gunpoint. Enlightened liberal west slaughtered and subjugated non-whites in colonies. WW2 weakened West, USSR was on the verge of dominating Global South as Marxism destroyed intellectual foundation of colonialism, colonies were revolting - West didn't give freedom to the world, we fought for it, Denmark killed thousands of Indonesians to keep colonies after WW2. West don't recognize its tainted legacy so it's falls flat.
@@21lessons56 That doesnt answer my concern of China being a good role model. Chinese state is as repressive and brutal to its minorities and political rivals as much, of not more than the western Imperialists. If things have to be learned from China just because of their recent economic policies, then the West should become aggressively liberal capitalists because that's what gave them the immense economic progress
Man Krishnan that Les Paul and the Tele make the whole video, have you ever considered starting your own guitar youtube channel? You're such a cool dude you'll be super popular I'm sure :D
A person from a culture that still throws acid in the face of brides and practices honor killing is the last guy in the world that I would take advice from about how to run a democracy.

In general people don’t care and are not interested, as long as everything runs smoothly...
That's true. When Jews were butchered in Germany, non-Jews went on with their lives smoothly.
Many thanks for continuing to bring us these substantial interviews
