  • Indian writer Pankaj Mishra is one of modern Asia’s major intellectual forces. In 2014, his book “From the Ruins of Empire” won the Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding. In this book, he criticises the West from an Asian vantage point. A disturbing vision.

He is an intellectual of the present: he travels the world, his thinking is connected and networked and he is equally at home on the world's major stages as in a small village in the Himalayas. The Indian-British writer Pankaj Mishra knows the West, as well as he does the East. In his books and essays, he tells his readers what the East thinks of the West. In summary: not much.
Barbara Bleisch asks the urbane intellectual whether there is a new clash of cultures, what neo-colonialism is, and what lessons the West still has to learn if it does not want to sink without a fanfare. Because one thing is clear to Pankaj Mishra: The resurgence of Asia is in full swing.

It does not happen often enough, but here is an instance in which the interviewer is really the star of the show! The questions are precise, very specific and she will not let a vague answer slide by. Mishra is on top of his game too. Great interview.

Really excellent interview, there's not enough of this quality. And thank you for including English subs.

I have seen her interview with Zizek. She really really works hard on it. One of few interviewers who doesn't just ask question but ask piercing deep questions that comes out of a very active thought process.

I'm embarrassed to admit I speak only English, with a smattering if Italian, so I'm grateful for both the subtitles and that Mr Mishra is speaking in English. I'm only just now consciously throwing off the yoke of the western reading of history. Thank you both for an excellent interview.

Japan's rapid industrialisation went hand in hand with its imperialist expansion. It modeled itself not only on the Kaiser's Germany, but also the British and French. Several intellectuals in Asia recognised the seeds of Japan's imperialist and fascist turn. The righteous militarists in Japan used their colonies as proving grounds of their suprematism. To hold up Japan as some sort of heroic Asian leader of national independence while blaming 'western' ideas for tyranny in Asia is as reactionary as European fascism itself. As if Japan (or any other country for that matter) should not be remembered or held accountable for the roughly 30 million killed and horrific and as yet not properly recognised war crimes during its short and brutal sweep through East Asia from 1895 until 1945?

Ich muss Sea of Fog leider zustimmen.

Also peculiar how Mishra emphasizes compassion as if it were an Easter trait, especially in an interview with a Swiss where the Red Cross society originated. This coming from an Indian born into a caste system in which Untouchables can be punished for walking in the shadow of a Brahman. Obviously, a lot of Eastern philosophy has not permeated Eastern societies. Even in Sri Lanka, Buddhists are becoming violent against Muslims. I suppose that is a "Western" vice being spread?
