Santiago de Cuba | This is like the 1930’s

  • In this video, I will leave the familiar streets of Havana and travel to the raw streets of Santiago de Cuba. Santiago is a storied city with a forgotten history and a rich local culture. Due to a lack of connections, Santiago is often bypassed for Havana, Varadero and Vinales. Due to the blended population and geolocation of the city, it feels far more Caribbean than Western Cuba. Let's make Santiago great again.

    Been to Santiago de Cuba 30+ times . The fish is probably a bottom feeder similar to carp..it's horrible . Cuba is not known as a destination for gastronomy . It is rich in culture and many wonderful people I am honored to call my friends . Family and friends mean everything to these people making the best of a terrible situation . Quite a few of my friends have come to Canada in the past 10 years with the help of many repeat guests at a certain hotel outside of the city and at the foot of the Sierra Maestra mountains . As a woman who sometimes travels solo , it is one of my favorite destinations ..my friends welcome me into their humble homes and am treated as family .

    I've been to Cuba twice and I'm going back at Christmas. I found the best bet for getting a decent meal was either at a Paladar (small privately-owned restaurant ) or a Casa Particulare (room in a family home). A good bit of advice: bring some hot sauce and/or bottled condiments with you from home. You won't find them in Cuba. Enjoyed the video, thanks!

    I apologize if this sounds rude, clearly, Cubans come in many colors! How come, not many of them are white ?Well, Spanish looking. In Miami, a lot of Cubans look Spanish/white. Thank you for sharing the culture. You are kind! :)

    • @KeenanLambert198
      @KeenanLambert198  6 месяцев назад +7

      Hi Danelle,
      Thank you so much for asking that question.... Before the Cuban Revolution, many white Cubans occupied positions wealth.... The Cuban upper class and upper middle class was almost exclusively white.... After the Revolution, many white Cubans fled given the socialist policies of the Comandante Fidel Castro Ruz... And since the revolutionary period, Cuban migrants have disproportionately been white, leaving the island to become blacker and blacker over time.... However, if you travel to Vedado, the new downtown of Havana, most of those beautiful homes are still occupied and owned by white Cubans.

    Bro'K, you were certainly straight-laced in this video. Any fish monger or chef will tell you fresh fish DOES NOT SMELL like fish. Was there with my snow-white much-younger Cuban wife many years back We had driven from la Habana. That's an experience only to be done in daylight. We only stayed 2 days. She found the city to be too black. Have you come across the subtle signal about being black? A person will take their fore finger and middle finger together and rub their opposite fore arm. This means It won't rub off (the blackness). As to being hassled, never (two whites). With Cuban wife # 2 (mulatta, who swears she is not black) we were stopped by the police in la Habana. I think there is more of Oriental visit to come. Saludos de Canada

    Bro, I am an avid viewer of your videos, however, I do have some constructive criticisms. For me, your format is predictable. I say this because I can be assured that almost all your videos begin with the usual drink, then some nondescript restaurant.
    I am not a drinker, so the over consumption of liquor doesn’t appeal to me. I am sure others are intrigued by that. Then the food is almost always criticized. I learned Cuban food is terrible through your videos. Question, for example, there’s no trendier eatery in Santiago de Cuba? Somewhere you can have a decent meal instead of the meal and drinks costing $6 USD? For example, say $10 USD?
    Also, for me, I like to learn things. In Santiago, there’s no historical buildings; home of a famous person; place where a significant even occurred, or a popular place to hang out with locals?
    I throw those things out to enhance the channel. When things become monotonous, people tend to lose interest. Just some suggestions to inculcate moving forward.
    Thanks and walk good! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

    • @KeenanLambert198
      @KeenanLambert198  11 месяцев назад

      Points taken.... Thanks for this comment of course. I have to be very careful in how I craft these videos.... I still give the historical pieces but I play with the packaging of the history as not to wear out the viewer. The drink and food is actually an intentional step into the culture of a place..... However, I hear you on the criticisms.... Why did you prefer the Santiago night piece over this one?

      I actually like this about the videos. For example, the videos about Haiti. I have read plenty about Haiti but from what I have read I get very little sense of what the day to day must be like for normal people - other than pretty awful, probably. But what do they eat, what do their cities look like, how does it feel to walk down the streets? As for the drinking, I am not much of a drinker anymore so when I travel I look for other things. But think of it this way - first, a lot of people drink more when they travel so they'll find it interesting, and he's the one who's gotta go through the hangovers from the extra-cheap rum! Anyway, his friendship with Alina alone makes the whole series worthwhile.

      @@KeenanLambert198 The other thing that Cubans will eventually have to come to grips with is that the service provider is not king. The lack of tourists has driven that home a little bit....showing them that cash is king. I remember seeing some vendor (in Havana) trying to sell a small bunch of grapes for some ridiculous price (I think it was something like USD$10). Someone probably lifted it from a state function. No way Cubans could afford that and tourists would see what a ridiculous price that was. They guy wasn't selling for less than what he thought they were worth. I passed by often as saw those grapes wither. Don't know what happened to them but likely went home and ate rotten grapes.
