This was my very first interaction with the internet and my first AOL email account was created there. I will always remember this place as the beginning of the internet in a way! I hadn't seen so many computers in one place! The speed and quality was just amazing to me and they set the bar so high that it actually took about 3 or 4 years for me to come across an internet connection as fast as the @Café!

    I worked at a video store called Art & Trash in Toronto and we had a web site with all our inventory on it in 1994. Across the street from us in 1995 or so, a couple opened a cafe called The Help Wanted Cafe, which was an internet cafe where the staff would help you do job searches and make resumes and cover letters. Every day you'd sit there for lunch and a stream of people would walk in thinking they were hiring. It was rather hilarious.

    In Japan they still have Arcades.......I miss them , it was just a social thing.....Going with your friends playing those games .......I think VR can bring back Arcades......So anybody reading this , get on it...... people are going to cafes to play board games, why won't this work.....

      +D H Honestly though, something about the early 2000's was awesome. It was a period where kids weren't glued to their phones, and went outside. It was also a time where the Internet was pretty established, but still new. TV was best back then, and things where just better

      Sure we had the wild west days of internet but even back then dial-up was excruciatingly annoying. I'm spoiled these days with fast connections and wifi publicly available almost anywhere. I could never go back to the 90s.

    I barely remember the first time I went on the internet, around 1995 or 1996. I don't remember much except for the fact that you had to know the URL of one of the many search engines, and all the content was generally text. I remember getting cheat codes and tips for all sorts of games that were around at the time. It was awesome.

  • @toonpik7
    @toonpik7 8 лет назад +3

    Even if the internet was so expensive today and we had to use internet cafes to use it, I don't think the at cafe would be very successful. It's missing one vital element that people didn't even know they wanted back in the 90s in regard to internet use. Privacy. I can't imagine watching Netflix, gaming, or social media in such a noisy and public place. In Japan, internet cafes are still successful because they offer privacy and low noise levels. This is designed more like a trendy restaurant with big glass windows and such. That being said, I wish I could have an experience like this because it would be quite interesting.

    I remember around 98/99 when the internet was getting more common but still not fully commercial. People would joke and post pictures what things would look like in the future. Ads everywhere, bloatware etc. Boy did that come true. So many sites today are infested with ads, modal popups and gobs of plug an go scripts in a mess of spaghetti code. Even with today's faster speeds these sites load like crap, hang in the browser etc. I almost want the internet of 20 years ago back. Nobody thinks about optimization. Just add more and more effects and crap.

    • @dittbub
      @dittbub 8 лет назад +1

      This may have been true 10 years ago but I feel like optimization has actually come a long way.

    • @stockjonebills
      @stockjonebills 8 лет назад

      dittbub Not at all. Maybe in regards to what you can do from a programming perspective and on higher end sites like google, youtube etc, but the web today is inundated with sites built by amateurs. They embed every type of goofy effects plugin, tons of popup modals, carousel articles and ads that arent even correctly embedded. Optimization is a lost art. Some of the libraries like rails also allow developers to do some stupid stuff because they cant directly manage assets very well.
