The guy was a hipster back then and a hipster now
Lol yeah
are you saying he was a hipster before it was cool?
+Ian Munro hipster are wannabies know the difference
the guy was a hipster before it was cool
literally the least important part of his character or the video.
Glenn's hairline genetics are alpha tier.

Yup

Another guy in the comments posted it.
It could replace every instance of the sunglasses -> deal with it meme.
Jonathan Alexander it won't become a meme. Too old.
Thats Vash from Trigun!

The youthful vibe that this guy projects really is a testament to how a sprightly demeanor and great hair genetics can totally spit in the face of age. Good on him!
I love stories like this. Not only do they make you feel old, but they remind you that we've truly entered the next step in the age of man. This guy's a pioneer.
"man" *triggerededededededededededededededededdededededededededededededed*
+HyperCounter that is short for mankind
+
And then you have young people like me who's inital thought is "that's old" or "why", thanks to the fact that in the US the thought of going to an internet cafe is weird, due to the fact the internet is near ubiquitous.
Yet we're somehow regressing as a species..
"I'm terrified and excited" pretty much sums up my attitude toward new technologies.
VR, Computers, and Capitalism in a nutshell. It'll be monetized.
Thought the same. The way he said it was spot on too
VR, AI. I'm terrified and excited.
Came for this

His eyebrows are even more epic.
True dat
1:13 this piece of footage has been waiting 21 years to become a gif reaction. Make it happen.
i literally thought the same exact thing
He almost sounds like microsoft sam also
CANT STOP LAUGHING
yassssss
A still pic would be fine though.
The "I'm terrified and excited guy" needs to be a reaction video.
oh he is right. I didn't use internet regularly until 97, but I did use it for a sociology class in 94. Internet in 94 SUCKED! I tried to open a page that supposedly has an essay about the book Brave New World by an English professor (we were told "bonus points" if our next essay had a citation gained from the web) aaaand I got a picture of a flying kitten saying "brave new world brave new world..."
Damn, even back then they had those stupid cat memes going lol
😂😂😂
Early trolls. Lol
Ok, Aldous!
Hey how long did it take to load that
the founder's face has a very uncanny valley feel, almost like he's is wearing "old age" stage makeup and still appears young?
Alley Peplinski great observation
YES!!!!!!!!! EXACTLY
He seems young at mind still!
It’s because he’s in his late 50s and still has all of his hair which is not common at all.
Glenn is definitely a Fred Armisen character
Lol, this guy can't see through Armisen's hilarious costume.
How about dr. House
Lul u taught me how to sk8 and u comment on this video lol
Mlep(clay)nos
The internet from 96-2007/2008 definitely had a different feel to it. Social media era killed off many niches. Forums started getting replaced with groups, etc.
True
feeling worried about the future 😢
"Only '90's kids would remember this"
Yup.
I doubt it ,, they were still busy being kids
80s kids?
+silent555 my dad was a computer software engineer so I have very clear memories of using our family's computers and the Internet in the 90s. Lots of floppy disks, bad graphics, and long loading times LOL
+ShoMeSho I was used to Macs, floppy disks, the awful dial up noise.

How can he sustain such powerful eyebrows for so long?
Seriously though they could give Peter Capaldi's run for their money
ask Noel Gallagher
I visited the @cafe when I was 11 years old, my family and I were visiting NYC from Iran before heading out to California. This was my very first interaction with the internet and my first AOL email account was created there. I will always remember this place as the beginning of the internet in a way! I hadn't seen so many computers in one place! The speed and quality was just amazing to me and they set the bar so high that it actually took about 3 or 4 years for me to come across an internet connection as fast as the @Café!
Fascinating guy. In other news, he looks like a Nick Cave/Peter Capaldi hybrid.
YES WITH PETER CAPALDI
Came here to say Capaldi, too.
ikr.
and now I can't unsee that XD
he looks a little bit like willem dafoe
This guy has aged remarkably well
That terrified and excited guy 👌🏼
3:59 "...emails, the way most hacker and computer freaks communicate with one another."
*hysterical laughter* a lot has changed in 20 years!
I keep rewatching just cos he's just damn
That makes no sense.
What a great episode Vox, and the background music is just phenomenal!
I wonder what the graph at 3:04 is like today. Like 85-95%?
Here's the source for that chart: www.pewinternet.org/data-trend/internet-use/internet-use-over-time/
As of January 2014, 87% of Americans surveyed say they use the internet.
-Phil
the other 13% probably use it and dont realize it
Hi Vox, Where do you get your background music?
+Vox What background music did you guys use?
The music is listed around 8:46

I mean, seriously, people -- as a teenager in the 1970s, I knew that @ meant "at." It's a standard business symbol, e.g. "15 @ 2.00" means fifteen of an item at a price of $2.00 each. How could it be this big a mystery?
Right it was definitely before Internet
i like videos like this... not some buzzfeed shit
Yeah those videos are mostly 2016ish though
He is rocking his eyebrows and hair~
this really blew my mind when I realized that I was watching this on the Internet
He sorta reminds me of Morrissey

The hipster internet cafe of 1995.
When u have people buying a cup of coffee, and occupy your table for hours w/ the computer u know your business will fail.
Well with the sign shown its assumed you had to pay for computer time but still its hard to put a price on and was probably more expensive to maintain back in the day
good videos about random stuff. keep it up vox.
I love you Vox, the quality of your videos are on a league of their own!
Keep the good work coming!
dudes got some wicked eyebrows
Daddy material
Now i can take my 1/4" thick computer out my pocket, which is many 1000's of times more powerful than the computers then, leave my house and access the internet almost anywhere, and at much faster speeds. Wow we've come far
And rather than surfing an internet owned and operated by its users, you have to swipe through algorithmically sorted media feeds operated by the worlds largest mega-corporations. Great.
This video made me nostalgic of a time I wasn't even around to see
I remember my mom taking the subway for over an hour in 1994 to go to internet cafe just to read one e-mail....the cafe administrator used to call people when they received e-mail and you could choose to have your e-mail read to you or you could go there in person....not everything was easy back then kids=)
my dad went to this caffe shen he was young he told me that it was very new for him
MOre of this. Super great stuff guys.
"I'm terrified and excited."
This video is great in so many ways. One I haven't seen people mentioning: these sentences styled as 90s magazines headlines are spot-on!
More shit like this vox.
Wow! This is amazing. I went to New York on holiday two years ago and I went to that very yoga studio. I had no clue about the history of the building!!
I was there in 95 selling web design, crazy times...
What a great video Vox, the detail and editing is amazing really wish you guys had some videos in Spanish or subtitles so that I could share them with some of my friends.
This type of content is the reason I'm subscribed to this channel.
Wow, this is really throwback. This wasn't the last internet cafe in NYC, I remember seeing internet cafes popping up everywhere in Queens and Brooklyn in the late 90s and early 2000s but they weren't serving a big menu like @ Cafe, mostly drinks and snacks.
Ive been their in GTA 4.
yeah its called tw@ cafe its a cool easter egg
There*
Excellent audio on this one guys! Cool video too! ;D
VOX, I sincerely love your videos. Thank you for creating really engaging content. It's channels like yours that inspire me to create videos of my own. If you guys ever need someone who shares your passion for making quality videos I'm your guy 👍
I worked at a video store called Art & Trash in Toronto and we had a web site with all our inventory on it in 1994. Across the street from us in 1995 or so, a couple opened a cafe called The Help Wanted Cafe, which was an internet cafe where the staff would help you do job searches and make resumes and cover letters. Every day you'd sit there for lunch and a stream of people would walk in thinking they were hiring. It was rather hilarious.
Vox you win again with this one. Great find. Great story.
This channel is one of the best on RUclips hands down
The man looks much better today than he did in 1995.
today it would probably be called #café
That could get you in a lot of trouble
why?
"excuse me while i go to the hash cafe"
In Japan they still have Arcades.......I miss them , it was just a social thing.....Going with your friends playing those games .......I think VR can bring back Arcades......So anybody reading this , get on it...... people are going to cafes to play board games, why won't this work.....
Yeah, I still think the only Asian country that still serves arcades is Japan bc its still popular there unlike other Asian countries.
+Marc Vinoya Nope, there are a lot in South Korea, vice did a documentary a few months ago.
in my country we still have arcades.
Your not wrong so basically there is a steam game I can't remember the name but it is multiplayer, has vr support and you can make an arcade of your own and the games are from your steam library
Joseph Djeljevic R u talking about the Star trek one......cause it's multiplayer... damn that would be awesome.....#Nerdgasm.....
These kind of segments are really great!
What a great video! Stories like this continue to interest me. Great job VOX!
This is great, love finding out about how the world we know was partially built so recently
I’ve been taking a really good accounting class taught by an old computer geek, and she says that desktop computers were actually popularised mostly for accountants before becoming personal devices.
You just got a new subscriber. Good videos dude. (:
Man!!! Vox is the best when it comes to editing
Where does Vox get this songs? Huh? At 1:31 there's one I'd like to find
I'm _always_ terrified and exciting about everything
I started using the net around 1997 in the AOL days. I didn't even know how to send an email & eventually, sort of figured it out when I had to ask how to send one.
That last bit tho, about the video chat, that's absolutely incredible to me.... Because the quality has hardly improved.
Who else is jealous of his fab locks of hair
90s was the last best decade!
That's what everyone says of their best decades , we are all growing
+D H Honestly though, something about the early 2000's was awesome. It was a period where kids weren't glued to their phones, and went outside. It was also a time where the Internet was pretty established, but still new. TV was best back then, and things where just better
1890s right
Sure we had the wild west days of internet but even back then dial-up was excruciatingly annoying. I'm spoiled these days with fast connections and wifi publicly available almost anywhere. I could never go back to the 90s.
+Aryan Zagros no
I barely remember the first time I went on the internet, around 1995 or 1996. I don't remember much except for the fact that you had to know the URL of one of the many search engines, and all the content was generally text. I remember getting cheat codes and tips for all sorts of games that were around at the time. It was awesome.
The video and music in it is awesome! Can someone tell me the song the beginning? Sounds pretty indie.
"I'm terrified and excited"... Imagine if he knew memes would take over 😂
So interesting/amazing/scary to see this from where we are now
I'm terrified and excited to see this from where we are now
1:14 "I'm terrified and excited." Dude, you have no idea you had just explained the whole of Internet in those 4 words.
I loved everything about this video wow
Where is the Bitcoin Café ?
Even if the internet was so expensive today and we had to use internet cafes to use it, I don't think the at cafe would be very successful. It's missing one vital element that people didn't even know they wanted back in the 90s in regard to internet use. Privacy. I can't imagine watching Netflix, gaming, or social media in such a noisy and public place. In Japan, internet cafes are still successful because they offer privacy and low noise levels. This is designed more like a trendy restaurant with big glass windows and such. That being said, I wish I could have an experience like this because it would be quite interesting.
Great video!
This is just sooooo ahead of its time.
I remember around 98/99 when the internet was getting more common but still not fully commercial. People would joke and post pictures what things would look like in the future. Ads everywhere, bloatware etc. Boy did that come true. So many sites today are infested with ads, modal popups and gobs of plug an go scripts in a mess of spaghetti code. Even with today's faster speeds these sites load like crap, hang in the browser etc. I almost want the internet of 20 years ago back. Nobody thinks about optimization. Just add more and more effects and crap.
This may have been true 10 years ago but I feel like optimization has actually come a long way.
dittbub Not at all. Maybe in regards to what you can do from a programming perspective and on higher end sites like google, youtube etc, but the web today is inundated with sites built by amateurs. They embed every type of goofy effects plugin, tons of popup modals, carousel articles and ads that arent even correctly embedded. Optimization is a lost art. Some of the libraries like rails also allow developers to do some stupid stuff because they cant directly manage assets very well.
I love early 90s. Life was much simpler and happier.
Those CRT monitors a)give me nostalgia b)were a pain in the ads when it came to moving house
it was pretty new and people had no idea how powerful internet was. we still have internet cafes in my country
I couldn't care less about this New York cafe, I mean sure it's interesting but the only reason I'm still watching is because how weirdly good looking and captivating this guy's face is... I wanna draw it...
Do a video on hip hop
They already did lol
I just found this video. Those were great times!
Brilliant stuff Vox, thank you!
Who here remembers Cyber Cafes???
There are still a lot around
I mean in Korea there is PC bangs everywhere
those still exist...
*ALL* cafes are cyber now (∩_∩)
Starbucks is a thing. They have free wifi.
..."Latin organic vegan restaurant"
This entire thing is hipster af. Not that that's bad or anything.
Now I know where the idea for "You've got mail" came from

Here in Nicaragua internet cafés were still a thing as recent as around 2010, and boy were they popular. Cool video as always VOX. Is the whole video just one song btw? Which one is it?
