What Middle-Class High School Kids Were Like In The 1950s

- This is a portion of a television program made in the 1950s and presented on what was called educational television. It was part of a series designed to look at 1950s teenagers and what their lives were like. They will largely study the new rising middle class teenagers who at the time, appeared to be living by all of the "rules" that existed in the 1950s for them and how they would become or should become successful adults. I wonder what happened to all of these people as they live through the 1960s and had children by the end of that decade. Everything seems to many viewers who have commented on it, how "clean and upright" these students are. Of course they were carefully selected (remember there were rebels at that time including boys who wore leather jackets and girls for tight fitting skirts etc.) to be examples not only of what teenagers were like but examples of what they should be like.
To get some of the facts on the 1950s watch this - • He Gives The Most Well... .

that girl said “why” as much as some of us say “like” nowadays
Yes
Why
why, no. She still has a steady vocabulary regardless of her use of the word "why". These days kids use the word "like" because they lack the vocabulary to be able to replace it with another word/phrase.
@@Wilantonjakov No that's not true at all, some people use 'like' as kind of a filler word or they do it out of habit. I use it all the time, even though I do have quite an extensive vocabulary lol.
Exactly. You use it as a filler word because you're either lazy or can't be bothered using a wider vocabulary - which again is inherently laziness. That's exactly the point I was making. As always, there are exceptions, but exceptions don't always change the rule.
Old people also tend to wear the same type of clothes as they did in the period of they life. So am i gonna be wearing my biker jeans, Jordan’s, and Nike windbreaker when I’m 60?
Soy oh yeah yeah
Without a doubt mr. soy
You can wear whatever you want buddy.
I wonder why that happens? Seems kinda sad to think about. At what point in their life do they go, well im old now better start buying cardigans and khakis and wearing all those sweaters grandma knitted for me all those years ago. Ughh I dont think i ever want to get to that point.
@@jellyacc
Old people don't really wear cardigans because they're old. They wear them because, believe it or not, cardigans were popular with kids back in the 50's and 60's.
So yes, you're still gonna be rocking your hipster glasses, yeezys and man bun in fifty odd years.
These kids don't represent what highschool kids were like back then. They're probably honor students hand selected for the interview.
Armando Bustamante gets it.
Armando Bustamante that’s a really good point
Just as an educational TV show today (or a school board, or .. MY old school board) would likely pick the students that have the best grades and behave the way they like. To be honest, as much that seems different, there’s so much that’s the same.
No, I think they are good examples. Only thing is it wasn't everyday highschool kids would be on tv, so when they did, obviously they would act well brought-up
We don’t really know that for sure. Possibly, but we don’t know.
Damn American accents were soooo different back then.
I know thats what i noticed! Its crazy how much its changed
Yeah it actually sounded like an accent. A bit on the southern side. Now it is almost like nothing...or maybe it’s just cause it’s the way I talk, but that’s how I feel it is. Seems more boring than any kind of southern accent, or French accent etc...
Oh that’s right you don’t see many old videos showcasing high schoolers that come from other country’s
It’s called a “transatlantic accent” people in the U.S. back in the 30s,40s,50s were taught to speak like that

Probably because the "old people" are from the same era as this video. 50 years from now I'll most likely be wearing the same things, because keeping up with trends when you're old is useless and embarrassing. So one day the clothes we wear will be old.

All these comments saying "that generation of teens are better than today" are not taking into account that they were on TV right when it came out. Of course they are acting mature, people rarely got the chance to be on TV so when they did, they dressed the best, acted the best, talked the best, all because only those kind of people were on TV. Now, everyone has the chance so it's not special enough to change how you act in front of a camera.

As a 50's teen this was the way we girls dressed. The boys normally wore slacks and shirts or sweaters. Suits were wore to church and for special occasions such as presented here.
They seem very much genuine to me. People now imo are alot less genuine both consciously and unconsciously.
I noted that the use of "Why..." at the beginning of a sentence is what sounds the most dated of any anachronisms to me. You hear it alot in old ads and movies from the time. "Why, I just couldn't believe it."
Interesting that Levi's were out for this age group because by the late 60s and continuing until the early 1980s everyone under 20 *lived* in Levi's.

I was born in 1959. As a child in the 60's I can definately tell you kids were more polite. We did not speak to adults the way kids do today. Cursing was not allowed. We believed in sitting at the table for dinner. Our pass time was playing chase, hop scotch, barbies, riding bikes, etc. We understood what it meant to be home at a certain time. We didn't have reminders such as phones and such so we learned to follow rules. The world has changed and we have lost a beautiful time in history.

Well, me and my brother are in our thirties now, and we’re normal functioning adults. All my friends from school are leading ordinary, conformist lives, according to Facebook. The fears of the elderly unfounded again.
When will people learn that, actually, the kids are all right? Leave the younger generation alone. Every decade has its ups and downs, there is no time that was perfect. Don’t let nostalgia goggles turn you into a miserable curmudgeon. All in all, you’re just another brick in the wall.
Well said

“I belong in the 1300s where there was no clean water and everyone died of the plague” :)
also whenever someone says that, its because they are looking at it from a future perspective, but if they existed at the time, would probably not appreciate any of the things or be interested in the things that they like looking back
My name's stephen and i love blowing 3-1 leads right.
It's fascinating that they seem so similar to youth today, it's just that they grew up in a different time and different environment. I myself have a hard time imagining old people as once having been young, it's just really interesting to see that everyone at one point was the new generation.
They look like they are in their 40's
XxVideos I watch your website a lot I'm a big Fan!
Meanwhile, high schoolers today look about twelve or thirteen years old.
Vernon Schillinger I've never seen so many scrawny little soy boys all in one place when I was in high school. I honestly felt bad for the girls
Vernon Schillinger They either look like fuckboys or thots.
It's just their old fashioned hair styles.
I love that this video is resurging, probably because of the recent news about the rediscovered 50’s high school purse!
Would you mind informing me what that is?
Aug I just looked it up. Apparently some woman lost her purse in the 50s and some workers found it while they were demolishing the school. They were able to return the purse to the now 82 year old women by connecting with people on social media.
@@_.o0O0o._ the purse was hiding for 60 years impossible
To be fair, they probably chose the 4 most intelligent, well-spoken, polite teens to appear on this
“bucks that you never clean”
“it’s important that they’re not clean, huh?”
that’s literally most hs students with converse/vans?? the parallels are crazy
These are kids who saw the second great war... they didn’t fight, but they saw it. Makes you grow up fast. And helps you too appreciate the good times
I think that kids r the same way, like this interview consisted of the best and brightest if u get our best and brightest it will be comparable
I wonder where these guys are now...maybe they're alive. Of they are... Maybe they will see this video one day
I’m sure they saw it on TV when it aired after they did the interview..
For a fact the interviewer is most likely dead since he is an old man already and the students r probably dead or alive cuz their like sixteen in the video
@@Throat_Spray lol no I know that. I mean on the internet

Its interesting that there is a black man on this show.
04dram04 he is 17, these are teenagers. I know I couldn't believe it either.
Curt Christensen the 60s was a racist era. Its surprising he was on the show at all.
The point was this was before Selma and rcism was rampant. Pay attention.
Curt Christensen Haha, you're really talking out of your ass. It's not a liberal thing, it's accurate history. The civil rights movement started in 1954 because the 50's were peak racism and segregation.
John Evergreen You've been watching too much liberal propaganda. Times were more racist in the 50s and 60s, but it wasn't nearly as bad as you were taught. Not every tv show and person was racist in the 60s
The basic principles
For teenagers is basically the same, they want to look older and navigate the rules of dating around....the only thing is that it got amplified by a few dozen times. Plus you would find the girls talking about how it is misogynistic of guys not wanting to be in a relationship with her because he has been going out with a lot of guys.
PoeticSonic she*. Gays weren’t allowed back then

1950s: Levi’s are more for junior high and university
2018: Levi’s now cost $60
It's so interesting to see what they were like way back then
These bright young people grew into people like my parents, who to this day are convinced that perverts use the Internet to film people while they sleep and as such the only pieces of technology they have in their bedroom are a clock radio and a rotary dial phone. My mother also thinks that I should cut my hair and wear the same "stylish" rayon pants as she and her friends do (because we all know how fashion conscious women in their 70s are) and does not know how Netflix works.
Oh god. This sounds like something my grandmother would say. Anything that is shorter than a Bermuda short is for promiscuous trollops!
@@Indiegirl007 I don't wear anything shorter than a Bermuda short but that is because I can't be bothered to shave my Wookie legs above the knees.
but there is a lot of pervs on the internet! go download TOR and look it up! u will see plenty...
@@goofyahhuncleproductions42069 Yeah...but I don't think surruptitiously watching elderly people sleep is a common kink. A slightly more plausible scenario would be to hack into someone's home security to case the place out before robbing it but since my parents don't own a lot of stuff that would be worth stealing they would not have a problem with that.
People spoke so much nicer back then. No excessive use of "like" and "literally" ... no Valley Girl speak or vocal fry. Even the slang didn't sound as stupid.
“dealer” 50’s equivalent of thot? whoa.
I love the way they spoke back then, certainly slower and more enunciated than we do now! They didn't speak loudly or rushed, they took their time with their words.
They were too proper.
@@DestinyAwaits19 'Too'?
@@lilu6416 yeah, too prim and proper. Women should grow their hair longer and the guys should get tattoos on their chests and arms. Maybe they would be more comfortable and not so damn uptight. People back then were more wooden than a timber frame.
@@DestinyAwaits19 I don't think one can assume that off of this video, as of course the teenagers are acting more professional when they are being broadcast on TV with adults. Regardless, I would say it is a whole lot better than what a large percentage of women are doing in modern times.
Gee willikers! I always love to see the video time portal!
1950s: Everyone’s doing the mamba
2018: Everyone’s playing Mo Bamba
We’ve come full circle, folks.
@Grant420 No it was a popular song a year ago with young kids
Did everyone have that weird British Atlantic accent back then?
187macabee most educated people did and still do. It’s called American Eastern Standard English. News commentaries and movie stars speak it in order to be understood
187macabee there’s nothing British about their accent. It’s called Eastern standard English
I have a scouse accent.
Kids talk too fast and slur their words today. That's what I've noticed anyway. Nice to hear these kids speaking clearly and slower.
Bobby slang has been around for literally forever. They did this on TV and radio because of the shitty recording equipment. It would be hard to understand if they used words like umm. I guarantee you they said that stuff in their day to day lives
A lot of this is pretty similar to today in American high schools. People imitating the college kids(especially the frats/sororities) the constant changes in style, the constant changes in dance moves and music, the dating scene, and people still wear Levis.
Tarhiel You mean jumping up and down in the same spot pumping one fist in the air? Pretty sure it doesnt change and im not sure it dan even he considered dancing.
Tarhiel nigga tf, idk where you fuckin live but my high school is full of drugs and gangs and got shot up a few months ago, where I live the whole city is now a drug hood city bc of the high school kids

Wow they were very modest back then
I always like the style of clothing that was worn back in the day. Very classy imo
They're dressed formally and conservatively because they are in a formal situation that called for them to dress that way. These four kids appear to be very conservative student council types. In high school in the late 50s boys wore Levis, Dickies wash pants (tan, black or pale blue) long or short sleeve button shirts (with the sleeves rolled up), penny loafer shoes, blue suede shoes, snap jacks, white bucks, a thin suede belt with the buckle off to the side. Conservative boys had crewcuts or short pompadors, wore white bucks or saddle shoes. Rebellious boys (known in the Chicago area as "hoods") had long oily pompadors or "Hollywoods" (crewcut on top, long on the sides), wore a wide black leather belt with the buckle off to the side and black engineer boots. I'm sure there were many regional or local styles, but those are the styles I remember Maine East HS in northwest suburban Chicago from 1956-1960.
Teachers dressed up. Men wore suits or sport jackets with white shirts and dark ties. Women had short hair and long modest dresses. Get a hold of an urban HS yearbook from the late 50s to get an idea of what I'm saying.
One thing I’ve noticed people who behave and talk a certain way in early adulthood keep that core persona for the rest of their lives like highschool students in the video act like eighty year olds do today and they haven’t changed much with time in terms of personality. Now keep that in mind ninety years down the line we’ll have old people taking duck face selfies while attempting poorly to dab and floss.
They should really teach evolution in school. Like the raw biology and psychology stuff. Nobody in this day and age should be surprised to find out how we work as a creature.
With all these suicidal memes, will there ever be gen z pips that'll reach their 80s? 😂
flameshana9
Yeah, the evolution of individual species into domesticated animals. Mainstream evolution makes zero sense.
I love this so much I felt like I was there
We were there.
KIDS TODAY NEED TO SEE THIS AND SEE HOW WELL DRESSED THESE YOUNG PEOPLE ARE AND HOW RESPECTFUL THEY ARE
As a middle school teacher, these "kids" from 60 years ago don't sound much different from the children I teach. Yes, there are differences as noted by many comments and the group profiled on the video were probably selected for their ability to converse well BUT that's *not* exceptional to our current generation of students.
I really think that because of the way they dressed and talked and interacted with everyone giving them respect and how hard they worked is the real reason that they got married so quick in the 1950’s.
They’re so mature.
This is probably inaccurate because they’re being interviewed on television by an adult - they’re obviously going to act more composed
Kids today are never composed
Primary sources are the best. I LOVE history.
They probably chose the goody goodies bc there were definitely other problems
Squares, man... A bunch of squares.

Tru Scorpio then it changed to going together. Dudes really would come up and be like will you go with me ,,, hahah ,. Then it changed to going out .. then seeing each other. Then talking to each other. Damn lol 😂
