This problem is usually caused by a bad fuel injector (or injectors). The following service bulletin needs to be applied: L-SB-0045-12. Basically, you will need to replace all fuel injectors, however if you can clearly identify a cylinder or cylinders with misfires (this can be done if you have access to Techstream), then you can replace just the bad one(s).
Well not really, at least by Mine example. I’ve changed all (12) injectors, spark plugs, fuel filter, ignition coils even completely timing chain,. This noise is still there. I think there must be somewhere vacuum leak or bad grounding. By Mine case have to be something small, because engine condition overall is really good, that says all Mechanics. One more thing, My LTFT are positive at 12 and 18%, so that’s high.
My problem went away after replacing spark plugs (I had slightly over 100k). I also replaced injectors, cleaned throttle body and mass air flow sensor. A day of work but was worth it :)
@@marianknap i am experiencing this sound as well. Have heard it for about a year on and off. Mostly when weather is cold but sometimes in the summer too! Doesn't last very long. 70k. I wonder if it's because the person who owned the car before me did not use premium fuel? That's the only reason I can think of if the fuel injectors need to be replaced and spark plugs! But it sounds like that is what is needed to get the sound to go away. Very expensive if you don't know how to do it yourself. What do you think??
What years were the early production problem? I have a Lexus RX 350 and it makes the noise in the morning. I just did a motor flush and changed oil with Pennzoil Platinum 5w 30. Going to continue to clean Engine with each oil change and considering switching to 0W 20.
Hi I have exactly the same problem. Did you fix it? Dealer told me they couldn't replicate it when I left the car over the night :( Going to see another place soon. Tanks.
Hey Chad, I have sometimes thé same rattling only when engime is cold. Probably a rattling problem i think the problem is more present whit sp98 fuel Which type of did you use in your car ? Thanks for answer :)
Mine is 2013 rx350 awd, in nyc, with corrosion maybe a piece of metal is vibrating underneath the car. It's what happened to mine, put it on a lift and saw a piece of metal just loose.
@@ironmerc225It should be fine, 120.000km is nothing, but the older engines had this vvti rattling problem. Most of these engines will leak from the front timing cover when they're old and have done about 300.000km. Because the timing cover is sealed and doesn't have a proper gasket. The battery is common to last about 15 years. So you should be willing to replace it when the time comes if you want to own one. Otherwise stay away from hybrids in general. I personally just bought a 2016 GS450h (facelift model), so I've done my homework.
Anyone ever find out what the fix for this issue is... been to two mecahnics (the lexus dealer and a private shop) ... lexus tells me timing chain needs replacing which is a heafty price tag..... love my car dont want to have to get rid of it.

@@donovan_j_davis05 No duh Sherlock, it's the knocking/rattling noises AFTER the gas engine kicks in that's not normal, NOT the actual engine starting up that he's worried about. You'd think an owner would know how his car sounds after staring it hundreds of times over the course of ownership. Notice how you're the only one here claiming this is a "normal sound" 🤣. I doubt this is a head gasket issue, but I've had similar knocking noises when the head gasket on my CT200h cracked.

Did you go to a mechanic or did it yourself? I still have my powertrain warranty. Would lexus cover it?
@@justinlau3960 I did it myself but it was a lot of work. I am not sure if power train warranty would cover that. Go find out with your dealer :)

Heat shield around exhaust pipe in the middle.known problem, just add self tapping screws or replace the heating shield.

Have the same issue. It disappeares after about 1 minute. 2014 rx450h, 53k miles. Did you fix yours?

Vvti making noise. A noise for like 1 sec is not a problem. Please check if the vvti bolts have not come loose. That happened to my car
Do you think it's worth buying a gs450h with 120,000kms without any battery replacements but it still holds alot of charger and it revs up to 250kw

Hi mate, have you managed to find the issue? I've started hearing exact same sound on mine on a cold start. Any advice is greatly appreciated :-)
Spark plugs or gearbox 😢
I also have this issue.
any solution?

Water pump needs replaced…lexus just replace mine under warranty
Has the noise gone away with the water pump replacement?
Yes…
Mine was making that noise all the time…not only when the engine was cold
That's the gas engine sound
Okay mister know-it-all... the gas engine is NOT supposed to knock like that.
@@tlf361 it's not knocking and I know about it because I work at the Carlsbad Lexus dealership as a mechanic
