Every drummer that Avenged has had since the beginning (obviously) all the way to present day are all insanely talented. The Rev was just a freak of nature. Yes he was obviously a very talented drummer, but besides that he was just as much a talented song writer. I hate to say this but I honestly believe most people say that he's the best ever not based off of his talents, but mainly because he was a musician that lost his life way to early. Most artists don't get fully recognized for there work until they've passed away. Mike Portnoy is also insanely talented, he was one of the Rev's biggest idols which speaks for itself about Portnoy's character. Arin was the drummer that was severely underrated, he got a really bad rap while he was with them. Sure the drumming on hail to the king is a little more simplistic than what Avenged Sevenfold is accustom to, but it fit what the album was going after. I do not believe that he could have performed/created tracks like the ones from the stage though. Even the other members of Avenged said that he wasn't bringing the sound that they were really looking for. Brooks is just a god at what he does. He came from a family full of drummers, I believe somewhere I had read that all of his siblings ended up becoming professional drummers and his father was as well, his dad taught him since he was a kid to play and he is just a natural. Honestly I have a hard time telling who the better DRUMMER is. Brooks or the Rev. Obviously the Rev is a better song writer in the sense that he didn't just write the drum parts. But he would compose entire songs everything from the drums to the vocals. But as far as styles of drumming go brooks might have him on it. Coming from someone with years and years of drumming experience and someone who has been an avid fan of this band since right around the time "city of evil" came out, I believe that Brooks' tracks are just so intelligently put together, all the little things, the fact that he keeps time with his left foot on the high hat pretty much all the time except when he's using both feet on the bass drums, it's the little things that make me feel that way. But that's my opinion
Agreed. Brooks' play style is so thought out and so detailed and unpredictable. No hate towards to rev or it even being a bad thing but the way he played you could kind of tell in a sense what he would play next if you were a regular listener to his playing. It's not like that with brooks, hes always switching it up but does so very well to where it all flows good. He puts alot of time and thought into what he plays. Both are amazing drummers, both some of the best of our time.
I don’t know. I can see where you guys are coming from, but I believe that The Rev’s drum mechanics were very similar to what Brooks has been putting out. I feel that The Rev could keep you guessing what he was going to do next and was very creative with has drumming and that if he were still alive today he would have only gotten more creative. Sure, Brooks has been drumming longer than The Rev, but keep in mind that The Rev was already as good, if not better, than Brooks at the time of his death and, had he not died, he would have had 10 more years of experience to help him get even better than he already was. That being said, Brooks really does make me feel like The Rev never really died because they do have similar styles and even though I hate to say it, I believe Brooks could possibly surpass The Rev in talent one day because he has the chance to get better and that’s where it gets sad, in my opinion, because The Rev doesn’t have that chance, at least not the same type of chance as Brooks. The Rev will always remain the best in my heart, though. I’m sure he’ll remain the best in all of our hearts, not because he died too early, but because he was the original drummer for a band so many of us love, because he really was extremely talented in so many ways, because he was a very unique person, and because he gives us a sense of nostalgia that can’t be beat.
I was waiting for this part after reading your comment while listening to the drums and expecting sheer brilliance from Brooks! You got me there mate hahahaha!!!

His br drumming was so creative and unpredictable... no hc punk drumming is close to the brooks one by far. it gave me goosebumps. Genius.
Listening to Brooks' Drum Tracks, he's no Jimmy, but he's a great fit for A7X. He's much more calculated than Jimmy, he's not so all over the place. That's the reason I loved Jimmy so much, he thought outside the box.
Jimmy isn't better than Brooks. Brooks isn't better than Jimmy. Jimmy had a crazy, off the wall, sometimes erratic style, whereas Brooks' style is very complex except for when it's not necessarily and like u said, he is much more calculated. They are both very technical and capable of pretty much anything on drums. Jimmy vs Brooks will forever be an unnecessary debate
To me they’re equal, both really creative drummers with incredible chops, having said that, Brooks is a much more experienced drummer, his arrangements are pure gold, technical yet incredibly musical and tasteful.
Brooks is just phenomenal!!! There's no other way to put it!! I just hope that one day that I am as decent as both Brooks an Jimmy. I don't say as good, cuz even though I've been a musician for years, it's harder on 2 reasons only; 1) when it's been a while since you've been behind a kit since you had your last one and 2) it's hard to find a left handed kit. The one I had, I had to modify, and it took a while to get it right. But I can't wait to own a kit again.
I would assume they are just pointing out that Avenged allows him to show all his abilities better. Brooks has insane chops, and just the style he gets to play with Avenged, he can really spread his wings and unleash. That or they're trying to shit all over Bad Religion, in which case they'll have to organize their defense themselves there lol
@@BFMVrocks34 Bad Religion is one of my favorite bands, but I just heard an interview with Jay Bently and he even said Brooks was overqualified for Bad Religion.

@izikgarza1068 This is the recorded track. This came from Rockband 4, which uses the real stems. You can confirm this when you listen to Avenged's The Stage song breakdown on their channel. 110% the real track.
I'm digging the snare but everything else na. Just my opinion. I don't like the mixing for a few reasons. First, the kit doesn't sound like the velocities were altered. Some like the more natural sound but I can't stand inconsistent drum hits especially the bass drum. He loses power during those fast trills and it just sounds like a muffled roll. Second is another production issue. His timing. I know I'm crazy right? Hear me out. Some fills are off. Maybe only by a 16th of a note but it's there. Sounds like they went with a live take rather than quantized the individual hits. Again is a personal preference thing. I like post production drums to be cleaner and tighter. Example would be (all that remains, fall of ideals) album. Listen to that drumming. Fast and wild but tight and on perfect time.
You obviously use drum sound libraries in a DAW instead of recording them given your usage of terms like velocity and quantization instead of the standard terminology. These criticisms are actually all ideals in the drummer world. If you go to any decent tutorial for drums on a DAW, they will tell you to alter the velocities of each hit and to move them ever so slightly off the downbeat. Real human playing is full of nuance and it sounds incredibly unnatural and robotic if every hit has the exact same dynamics.
