I am 63 n just got my driver’s licence in Denmark where they drive on the right side of the road, while I come from India where we drive on the left. However, your explanation of techniques r the best I have seen n I use them all to understand driving techniques. I always struggled with backing, but u have helped me understand by ur simple, clear, easy to remember explanation. I just focus on whether I want to go towards something or away from it n turn the wheel accordingly, checking wing mirrors for safety. Neat!!! Thank u!

The way I visualize it is by thinking of the car always driving on a circle.
The line will go lengthwise through the middle of the car.
If you steer right the circle is on the right of the car, if you steer left the circle is on the left.
Doesn't matter if you go forward or backward.
The harder you steer the smaller the circle.
(If you don't steer and go straight you're still on a circle but now it's the entire globe)

This was really helpful I think as you mentioned keeping it simple is best. If you want to move towards the kerb steer TOWARDS it. If you want to move away from the curb steer AWAY.

There is an easy way to remember which way to steer the steering wheel when reversing. Just think of the back of the car as being the front (while looking backwards); if you want to steer left, then you move the steering wheel to the left or to the right if you want to go right (same as you normally would when driving forward).

I don't know how to drive a car but I'm learning how to drive a sit down forklift at my job and this same concept applies, however thinking about it like this made driving in reverse click for me.
      I'm driving/looking forward
      Red curb on my right
      Blue curb on my left
I turn the wheel clockwise and I drive to the right towards the red curb
I turn the wheel counter clockwise and I drive to the left towards the blue curb
      Now I'm driving/looking in reverse
The curbs have flipped L&R positions from MY visual perspective however turning the wheel in the SAME direction will drive me toward the SAME curb
      Red curb on my left
      Blue curb on my right
I turn the wheel CW and I drive to the left towards the red curb
I turn the wheel CCW and I drive to the right towards the blue curb
What I initially did at first was if I wanted to go to my right while reversing I turned the wheel CW as if I was driving forward and wanted to go right. I was confused as to why I was going the opposite way. That's why I don't like to think of the direction I'm turning the wheel in as L&R and I prefer CW and CCW because I can visually & physically process that concept easier than thinking in terms of L&R in relation to the wheel.

One tip I got from my instructor is to keep the car moving while turning the wheel, while reversing. I thought that wasn't really needed but I did it anyway. One time, I was going to reverse, and before I start reversing I was turning the wheel. when i start moving the steering was all messed up and I was like that's why i should keep the car moving. Doesn't need to be fast, can be really slow but enough to see where the car is going.

    • @ConquerDriving
      @ConquerDriving  3 года назад +5

It is easier to judge steering when moving but because you're moving you have less time to get think about when to steer and observations.

Im a new driver but I like parking in reverse, always do it this way rather than just sliding in from the front. However, I regret going for it in a tight space situation, when you have narrow driveway along the parking space, like when cars park in the middle of the parking lot driveways. Judging the distance enouth for the maneuver is tricky.

I thought of it as if I’m now aiming the back of the car when I put it in Reverse. If you think Left means Right or Right means Left, it’s not always gonna work, clearly.
So think of Reversing as aiming your car from the perspective of the back, as if your seat and steering wheel now turned around and is facing the back. From that perspective, if you turn the wheel to the left, will you go left? Yes.
TLDR If you put the car in Drive, you’re now aiming the Nose of your car, if you put the car in Reverse, you’re now aiming the Back of your car. Left is still Left and Right is still Right.

My issue is not knowing what way the wheels need to turn, its how many times i need to turn the wheel. Thank you thank you! I am a fairly new driver living on top of a hill on a one car track lane. I just recently met a car and had to reverse down a windy hill. Nightmare!! Thank god for reversing sensors. im too short to turn round much, Bth I passed my first test first time even though I failed the reversing round the corner so I am a decent driver, this makes me look such an idiot!

It's great to hear the video helped you. Keep practising and it will get easier with time. Take you time though, make sure you don't rush if you feel rushed.

@@ConquerDriving yes my reversing is bad I remember I had to do it on the lesson before I wanted the back of the car to go to the left and I it took me time to do it .

Could you possibly (if you haven't already) do a video on how to maintain your speed? I find it a bit tricky to keep at the same speed and not go slightly over or under

I hate maintaining a steady speed, I find it a real chore. It's why I love cruise control so much 😉 These two videos may help:

hi quick question ,I understand what you're saying but how do you know when the wheel is straight ?If someone is making adjustments is it that they count how much they turn ?or do u just adjust till the car go straight ?Thanks in advance.

With experience you know but if you're not sure, just move a tiny bit and you'll soon find out.

Drove my friend's car at his request. He told me turning the steering wheel before the car move for reverse parking is a no-no.
    I don't see the logic.
    Can I comment?
