When i go out on the street (and i live in a small town), i just walk a couple of streets and see what happens. When i get the "vibe" of that moment, i narrow my focus on that. I don't go out the door with a certain focus, otherwise you might miss some great opportunities. All in all: Experience wide open, en focus it down :). I see people posting the same setting over and over again, like the shadow figure in a dark place walking into a spot of light. I often shoot places where are no people in the frame, but otherwise draws my attention.
Great approach and I agree that certain themes are getting repetative when you look at a lot of work from people online posting their street images. So going for a more unique approach like you're doing is the way to go if you want to create something that is more "you"
