The reason I went natural was because I understood that we African women wouldn't be on relaxed hair if they whites had not made us think out hair is ugly and unkept in its natural state.....
Secondly, I hate the smell of relaxers and it changes my hair color from off black to light brown.
Thirdly, I can do alot of things with my natural hair .... I can go from curly to coily to straight if I want to..... and I cannot achieve that with a relaxed hair without adding extentions...
I hated natural hair before now because I thought it was difficult to manage. But it is the kind of stress I'd always wish for over and over again.
Taking my time to take care of my natural makes me feel more feminine.

I was introduced to your channel through your last video about relaxed hair in Africa and I just have to say, I appreciate the way you talk about black hair. I’m natural and I promote the beauty of natural hair, but I don’t believe all women who relax “hate themselves” etc. I think sometimes it’s simply a matter of preference, and that’s okay. I love that you understand the science of black hair and don’t shy away from pure facts even when it doesn’t paint relaxed hair in the best light. I genuinely respect that about you. I personally don’t like the “chemical” sodium hydroxide, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like the “look” of straight hair from time to time. That’s why as a natural I choose to straighten my hair a few times a year. Anyway, you’ve done an excellent job taking care of your relaxed hair, and though I’ll be staying natural, I enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work! ❤️

They validate their women with perms, makeup and all the artificial things wanting them to look like the Caucasians and because they think that is beautiful. Until our men start appreciating the naturalness women are going to be falling for their crap. Only few women went into perms and still do because they like it.

The point is natural hair does not automatically equate to healthy and vice versa. Everything depends on how you now love and treat your hair. Some people cannot manage full natural hair In their busy lifestyles. Relaxing is their option, their choice just to help with managing the texture and not because one wants they want to look caucasian. I relax mine thrice in a whole year and it is ok. I still get to use short curly weaves and my white friends cannot tell which is which. 😊They like the changes the variety and versatility. I take my time and use products that agree with my hair. As long as it is not shedding excessively,,the edges aint missing, it is lustrous and not dull, what are we talking about then? Remember! Sistas be having problematic hairs whether texturixed ,relaxed or not. Treat your hair right ,..choose products and stylists even your combs...wisely. Lol! Mind your own scalp and live a little. I know you look at Seun's and think 'Well now! How did that happen? Yea, Naija babes can rock their hair. Thank you. Mind your own patch and let others live! Simple!

Only reason I don’t relax my hair anymore is because I’ve never liked straight hair. While YOU are definitely beautiful, I just don’t like the style of relaxed/straight hair on myself and never have. As a kid, I would always curl my hair with a hot iron and after high school I switched to a Jerry curl perm to try to get curly hair.
It wasn’t until the natural hair movement blew up that I realized my hair was naturally curly, it’d just been altered by chemicals. So I shaved my head and never looked back. I just can’t stand straight hair. Whether it’s relaxed or not, it’s never looked good to me.

I went natural in the 90s before it was a thing and I got a lot of shit talking, but I didn’t care! I also had a Jheri curl in the 80s, which was a waste of money because my natural hair is as curly as a Jheri curl! I have hair that it's just fine natural, but I chose to relax it at least once a year for when I where it down. I do it because it's easy to care for. For myself feel I have too many more important things to focus on than doing my hair, and I don't like spending a lot of time on my hair. I do protective styles during the summer (braids/crochets) and relaxed/straightened/dyed (fire red) hair during the winter months. It gives me the best of both worlds and helps me retain length past my shoulders. We really need videos like yours to show tried and true methods of caring for relaxed hair and ways to do protective styles that don't damage your natural/relaxed hair. Thank you so much!!!

Yesterday, on Halloween, I relaxed my hair. It was like ... kind of stressful waiting for the product to act, so I decided to take it out in the middle of the estimated time. It was traumatic to wash my hair and not feel all that volume and I was always afraid to brush and break my hair. But it went well ... the texture is wonderful and I feel more comfortable waking up later without worrying about the time I will spend combing myself. My best friend was the one who introduced me to the natural hair community, but I felt like I was in a cult: using such oil, avoiding stretching my hair with heat or chemicals, spending huge amounts of money on natural products that didn't always work ... anyway , many rules for just living with a hair and an identity. My natural hair is 3C / D (mixed in some parts) and so people thought it was easy! Just washing your hair took an hour, untangling, styling and styling in general was an unnecessary waste of time. I will continue to take care of my relaxed hair with the same love that I treated my natural hair, but I think it will be easier and cheaper, but I also think I will lose some friends. Thanks for the video, I was waiting for someone to tell me that it was not a mistake or anything rash ❤️

I cut it short and it takes like no time to do and even when it was long on lazy days I would just pull it into a puff and it was chill. So I’m always wondering if I’m just lucky and what has been so hard for others? And I’m legitimately asking, not trying to come for anyone. Oh and I was relaxed before. It’s been 8 years. I have A LOT of hair, I relax it and it is still ALOT. There is so much more to me than hair , relaxed or natural my opinion is that identity is much deeper than that. I know of people with relaxed hair that are afraid to go natural because they think it will be too difficult just like I know of naturals scared of relaxing just because of what people will say. I use olaplex to protect my hair and have become hooked ! The difference I have seen is on another level. So my hair is far from bone straight, full of body yet relaxed. I say love yourself and do what works for you and don't ever let other people's opinions define or sway you because at the end of the day you are the only one carrying your hair! Trends change like clockwork what's in today may not be in tomorrow , I remember when glues on wigs were like abominations and now no one seems to care about it or should we talk about big bums? You are all beautiful and loved . Great video SEUN as always

I’m natural because my hair didn’t do well with relaxer. Even if I followed package instructions and used super strength, my hair was at best texlaxed really unevenly. It would be nice fresh from the relaxer, but then after a wash, it would almost undo itself. I can’t really explain it, just my hair really hated being relaxed, and I was tired of fighting my hair lol. I just woke up one day and said “enough. It don do.” Big chopped and never went back.
If my hair worked with relaxer properly, best believe I’d still be relaxed. My hair now is bum length, I have 4c low porosity hair, I do protective styles for months at a time like our good sis Seun. One day I might relax it, but it just seems like ich a waste of time given my experience from when I was a child/teen.
I hate the “natural nazi” trope. I hate this whole “my hair is x so it means I love myself”. Do you boo! If relaxer works for you, use it. If it doesn’t work for you, leave it.

My main problem with relaxers is the toxic chemicals. Honestly, if I liked straight hair more(on me), and if it wouldn't react badly, I may have relaxed it a year ago for ease(I have chronic illness). But every woman in my family that has gotten a relaxer had their hair fall out. Mom, grandma, aunts, great aunts, cousin. All'em. I've been natural all my life and I don't want to mess it up. And the smell and burn may me feel worse. But I mean, tons of naturals heat train, relaxing seems to take less energy. It is a preference thing. I just worry about the health of my body if I put that in my hair, and I don't want it to fall out. I would rather just cut it short. Your hair is v pretty tho, and I'm happy this works for you.

I really don't understand why people question what status someones hair is. Natural, relaxed, etc it all takes MAINTENANCE. NO matter what you decide to do to your hair it takes work and care. I know people with natural hair that is unhealthy, relaxed hair that is unhealthy. I've done all types of things to my hair from relaxed, to braids, to natural, wigs, etc..ALL OF IT TAKES WORK. NO matter what you do to your hair if you do not maintain and care for it, IT WILL FALL OUT. This is why I don't understand why people make a big deal about what ever path people take.

I appreciate your video. I am natural and have been since 2003 years, but prior to that I was relaxed since I was 12 years old. I have loved and hated elements of both states. I loved the ease of doing my hair with little fuss when I was relaxed but hated the chemical processing. I love the look and feel of my natural hair but not the forethought required to make it look "presentable". I very much believe that we can do what we want with our hair, the rule should be not to pass judgement or negative remarks on what others choose to do with theirs.

Very few people with afro textured hair can take hair relaxers. The hair is usually damaged in two to three years. Unless your hair is very coarse, try not to relax your hair. Some people can take heat straighted hair but still be careful with heat. I know it is your hair but unless the hair manufacturers find a way to make relaxers safer for Afro textured, avoid hair relaxers especially the no lye relaxers because they are extremely drying to afro textured hair..

More living. Less judging. The beauty about your life is just that. It's your life! You get to choose what works for you. You get to change your mind at anytime about anything that doesn't negatively affect others. I first went natural in 2005. When it started getting longer it took longer to detangle so I decided to texlax. It worked great. I went into the military and heard all the horror stories about how people gave women a tough time about braids etc. I decided to relax and cut it onto a bob. A couple years later I went natural again. Years later it grew long I relaxed again. In March 2020 I did another big chop. Its growing once again. The difference now is I have so many options with my hair. Crochets and curly wigs are my go to. I'm grateful that I can do so many things and not need to depend on someone else to do it. Will I relax again in a couple years? My choice. Will I remain natural and keep it at a manageable length and rock protective styles for the next 20-40 years? My choice. Embrace who you are realizing that those negative responses really have NOTHING to do with you. Most times people are unsure, insecure or afraid and take it out on the next person.

I remember the days of getting my hair relaxed and scalp burning because I was ignorant about what the relaxer is for. It shouldn’t be bone straight but relaxed enough to manage! Well I know better now. Those were my teenage years as a young adult I found out my true texture. This is in the 90’s I went nature without a plan. I didn’t big chop I kept my hair moistures or already in my natural curl pattern. Lol, people thought I had a jerry curl, nope all natural with gel to keep it that way or curl activator. All early 90’s. No social movement. Only getting to know my hair. Even before this I wouldn’t do the 6-8 week touch up with relaxers. I would go four months with good conditioning and the stylist would say it helped my hair rather than damaging it! It is all about know what works for your hair. Education and endurance. Thanks for all you do! I love your smile!

I've had people tell me that they think I look better with straight hair, but my Grandpa always told me that my curls were beautiful!!

When I came across your video about protective styles and growing your hair I decided to start putting other hair back with mine. I feel like I'm a student learning many new techniques again. As far as other people of many different races, including Blacks, they've always complimented my various styles. Other races have wanted to try similar things with their hair. One noted actress observed one of my interlock styles and for me it was a compliment! :-) Your tips have opened my eyes. As I tell people, be a ready student! Continue improving, young lady! You have such a sweet spirit! Keep that sweet, beautiful soul! Relaxed hair is easier. Even my hairdressers have said it. They have said that natural hair IS a lot of work. Most people who are honest will tell you that it is especially depending on your hair type. You have to do what works for you. Black hair gives you options!!! That's the beauty of it. Like you said, black hair is a privilege!!! And congratulations on your graduation 🎉! So happy for you, Duke Lady!!! If you need help or coaching or thinking throughout your next steps.

Seun you are so nice!!! If I was relaxed and someone asked me "why are you still relaxed?" I would say because I want to be. The way you wear your hair is your choice and it's beautiful by the way. I'm learning to embrace my natural curls and not fight it lol

Loved this video!! I feel we as black women should encourage each other not bash because of how you choose to wear your hair. I'm texlaxed , I watch all kinds of hair videos and learn from them all never say anything negative . Love your personality, LOVE your hair, enjoy all your videos!!! Yes more than a 20 minute video is fine with me!!!

Hello Seun, I was adopted by a white family when I was a kid and always had relaxed hair. I never learned how to take care of my own hair and now at 30, I'm like better now than never. lol I did a big chop in 2014 and switched to being natural. I can not for the life of me leave my hair alone and see why it has not grown and is always breaking off. I sooo appreciate your videos on how to do your own hair, as i feel in doing so, we grow to love our hair!! I can say, I have never loved my natural hair but am learning how to.

Regardless of what you do with your hair, the most important thing is to love yourself! If you wear fake due to not loving your own natural hair, that is a issue. You have a beautiful face, so whatever you choose to do with your hair it will only enhance the beauty u have naturally👍🏽

I don’t like the fact that people call it “natural hair” like it still grows out ur scalp it’s ur hair people should call it 4c or there hair type
