There's an entire 16-min video essay on why the chip scene is actually genius. It's a pretty good watch, as long as you've seen the scene before (obviously).
I really like how quickly did you catched on on Light being a psycopath doing it only for power and self gratification. I have seen many people having problems trying to build a profile on him.
I'd say he's more a sociopath, and I truly think the Death Note _does_ have some form of corrupting influence to it, but his personality and having been told he's perfect his entire life is what sent him off the edge so quickly.
The Death Note 100% would have increased those psychopathic or sociopathic tendencies at least indirectly, there's no way it wouldn't have corrupted his view of the world over time either way (even if he didn't go sicko mode and immediately writing down hundreds of names in a few days lol). Unless he never thought about keeping it, or using it all, having that kind of power, even if it was genuinely used with good intentions would inevitably desensitized to using it and the value of human life on smaller scales and especially how many people would have to die (innocent or not) if it could prevent tragedy. He's still a sociopath tho
it is hard to say from episode 1 as we do not see him interact with people he "should" love. So sociopath and psychopath is currently a bit hard to distinguish at this stage for me =) But he gives off more a vibe of a psychopath, but I might cahnge my mind later on this =D
I love that Ryuk is basically like "Sweet! I just created the best true crime show ever! Now let me just kick back with my apples and see what happens..."
The reason Light Yagami expects Ryuk is explained in the Manga. When Light first picks up the Death Note, he reads that the notebook belongs to a Shinigami. And the reason he wrote so many names within the first five days was because he expected to meet this Shinigami and get punished. He thought he had a deadline. He was willing to sacrifice his own soul, but instead is allowed to do whatever he wants. Not sure if he would have killed so many at first if he didn't have this expectation, he might have thought about it more or gone about is slower at first. Or maybe nothing would have changed, can't know for sure. Takes place in 2003.
Something I feel goes underappreciated is how QUICKLY Light devolves. At first it seems he has a fair point in using the Death Note to punish people the law wouldn't. But within the span of that same first episode he goes full *god complex* and shows that he's always been kind of a psychopath.
15:07 subtitle says about just name variations, but what Light wrote is actually like this-- Shibuimaru Takuo - Accidental death Shibuimalu Takuo - Accidental death Sybuimaru Takuo - Accidental death Shibuimaru Taquo - Accidental death Shibuimaru Taccuo - Accidental death Shibuimaru Takuwo - Accidental death -- name variations that all sounds same + cause of death(Acctidental death)
Light is not just a psychopath; he is a narcissist. "The world is rotten and only *I* can fix it." These are the words of a narcissist. Psychopathy is very prevalent in narcissists.
Yea because people like you will prioritise the relief of their own personal discomfort over trying yo save millions of lives who each will individually suffer a fate worse than personal discomfort a million times over If he happens to be narcissistic while doing a good thing, ide support that any day over the narcissists who think they're good for sitting back and acting like they're virtuous
I'm a big fan of keeping the running kill count at the side. It's more than just you reacting, but also putting yourself in the story and engaging with the premise in a way I haven't seen other people do.
Lol you're probably the most aware content reactor, I have a feeling bro is going to catch onto every little plot hint and figure stuff out pretty quickly. Edit: right off the bat he thought of something I never did, using the Death Note for good (IE peacefully ending a chronically ill person), holy crap. No wonder you're a writer.
@@mrmagnificent1992 I'm mostly referring to what he says starting at 28:21 as well as the general theme of the anime of Light wanting to become a god and the kind of people that support that. I honestly don't even remember hearing what you are bringing up in this react-analysis.
Cram school is a private school offered to usually junior high or high school students with the goal to increase their scores and preparedness for high school or college entrance exams. It’s pretty common in China, Japan, etc. There are a number of different types… the least intensive is just a systemic way to study and do homework with a teacher helping, while more intensive cram schools are basically just like school. They usually last 2-3 hours a day, basically every day except sometimes weekends
Yeah, absolute power doesn't corrupt, it just enables what is usually repressed. It is the other kind of power that corrupts, the power that is not absolute and you have to become more and more corrupted to keep yourself from losing it, that's the one that corrupts... absolute power just shows up what was already there and makes it absolutely visible
Only to an extent. You have to appreciate the very concept of corruption as well. It's not an exploration or revelation, but a corruption. It turns something into evil that wasn't evil before, or at least not evil per se. Something like pride, greed, boredom, anger, it is present in many people, and usually controlled by human and societal circumstances and mechanisms, which get completely uprooted or disabled by the introduction of absolute power. That power strips you of those security mechanisms, leaving you defenseless against your own worst impulses, thus causing the corruption. (Think of the one ring in LotR as well, how terrified both Gandalf and Galadriel are of it, even though they are the purest of beings). All this is not to say that there is no blame to be ascribed here, if you have those corruptible qualities within you you need to become aware of them and fortify your heart and mind against corruption at some point. But in any case, I'm not entirely sure how far along in the blaming vs. explaining direction question I am myself, and on which side I would ultimately land, if at all. I just think it's a more complex process than it is often given credit for. As we see at some point later in the series, I would argue pre-Death Note-Light is as much a victim as the people he harms in the process.
I love how they wasted no time in him going *super* evil. He convinced himself murder was okay in some cases and then went immediately devolved into well then he should do it in all these cases and into god complex gotta keep doing it because of course he’s the only one who can, according to himself of course. Ryuk didn’t even show up yet and he was like *pages* deep in death. It really sets up the rest of the series to be a roller coaster and I can’t wait to see you watch episode 2 now
One of the things I love about Death Note is it gets to the point right away. That, plus, it doesn't dick around with tragic backstories or full explanations on why characters do the things they do (except for one, and that was more for irony). Many characters _say_ why they do things, but we, the audience, have to decide whether or not we are to take their word for it.
@@storieswithstyle Exactly! He hasn't thought even once about the possibility of false convictions, he doesn't give a f*** about potentially killing innocent people.
@@MsCassidy23yeah the first episode manages to already establish his strong sense of justice and hyper inflated ego so that when he gets the death note it’s already been set up why he would turn out this way without explicitly stating anything.
5:28 - It actually has become a joke at anime conventions and the like to get signatures from people in a notebook, only to close the cover and reveal "DEATH NOTE" on the cover.
This is the type of show that will start a lot of debate, especially on abstract topics like justice and morality. And yes, I'm calling those term abstract since the show itself will prove that they don't have clear definitions.
I love that Ryuk's whole motivation for this mess was just because he was bored. Really just boredom. He's not human so we don't have to judge him by our moral standards. So Ryuk is just amusing. Light on the other hand...
It is great that you do pause. Do not let people tell you that pausing is bad. The pausing is what we are here for. We've all seen it before-- we want to know what your thoughts are about it. I've tried watching people that don't pause and I always catch myself getting frustrated, because they talk OVER the video. At first they talk during the silent bits, but then they talk over jokes and sometimes miss entire scenes because they are going off a on a diatribe about honeydew melons or something. I catch myself yelling "STOP! Listen!! You missed the jo-- rewind it! AHH crap they missed the best part." so I really appreciate you pausing. It enables you to add as much interjection and speculation as you need to and also you don't miss a word. This show would be almost as hard to watch as Game of Thrones if you weren't paying full attention lol
It's also a common myth in Japan. So it wouldn't be a streach to imagine a book with the magical power to kill people to be related to a magical beign responsible for taking human lives.
A cram school is test-prep or that's what we'd call it in america. It stems from the idea of "cramming" together a bunch of info that you'll need to be prepared for some test or exam. Pretty sure its voluntary.
I love how, when Ryuk tells Light he'd be the last evil person left, Light's reaction leaves even Ryuk, a god of death, speechless I'm so hyped for ep 2, every time I watch it it gives me the chills, can't wait for you to experience it too
IMHO, a reason people sided with a villain, may be there is someone doing the dirty work for things you know you can't do it. Classic, paradoxical between utilitarianism vs absolute? morality.
25:30 i think it's also worth noting that the justice system in Japan is known to be not the greatest, with a trial almost guaranteed to get you convinced. It goes to show just how many innocent people he might've written down
I keep finding such good commentary channel Im glad youtube is pushing actual good channel to the algorithm, instead of the mere hype talentless reactor ones
Great reaction of a great masterpiece. I can't wait to watch your reaction to the second episode. Regarding to your great analysis, I think you've nailed it pretty much, but I'm going to comment on some elements of this episode without giving away spoilers of any kind: - On the one hand, it's true that Light has written down a lot of names since he got his mind set on it, but let's look at certain elements: --- From the little we have been able to see of his life, we can see that this young man is one of those "perfect" children who have never stepped out of line, who have always acted as expected of them, including achieving very high academic grades that make him one of the most brilliant teenagers in his country. The fact that he has taken the lives of two people, even if they were very evil, does not diminish the fact that he has broken his own moral compass by which he always acted. --- Furthermore, after discovering the true power of the Death Note, he has cleverly deduced that it belonged to a supernatural creature, which will surely be angry with him and will snatch his soul for breaking some divine law by using the notebook. --- So, taking all this into account, he must have reasoned that if he is already condemned soon, why not do the greatest good possible by using that notebook to free the worst criminals in the world? --- That would satisfactorily explain why he wrote down so many names of criminals in such a short time, which is causing a descent into madness (the laughter that escaped him when he looked at the pages he had already used from the notebook is certainly somewhat crazy, but it could also be partly something similar to Eren's laughter when Hannes and Sasha die in AOT; because from his point of view at that time, he was already supernaturally condemned in some way). - On the other hand, Light's attitude towards Ryuk shows that, after the initial scare, he tries not to show fear of the shinigami (possibly considering said fear as a weapon of the shinigami against him, as happens with the fear of the victims in front of their bullies) and above all, what he needs most is for Ryuk to empathize with him (on the one hand, he confesses to him that he was bored too, and on the other he confesses wanting to become the god of the new world, a plan that could be considered interesting enough for the shinigami, who has already confessed that, no matter what happens, he will write Light's name in his own notebook) in order to save his own skin.
I want to let you know I read all of this so it won’t be in vain. Great analysis considering I’ve already watched the series and didn’t know much about
According to the author, one of the reasons Light went so bad so fast was that he was such a good person before the death note he had no idea why someone could do any of the things he kills people for.
You should also add a count for the number of people that he saved by the killing. Just the ones we know for a fact, those that we can actually see saved by his actions. I think this would be good to put things into prospective as we get farther into the show.
9:40 heard a very interesting account of this. Americas ace of aced back in ww2, Richard Bong downed over 40 aircraft himself, yet because he did so at such a close distance, he never actually saw the aftermath. During one mission he saw his ally take out a fighter, and witness the pilot die, and spent the next few hours puking and sobbing, realizing that in his goal to be the best pilot, he had killed 40 people. Obviously he knew the planes had pilots, but his brain never connected the "destroying plane means killing pilot sometimes", and it hit him all at once.
23:00 - Ryuk is the closest sound approximation to Luke/Luc. Luke goes back to Λουκᾶς (Loukas) "from Lucania". Now the fun part is what allusions that could be making. Is it Luc and a pun on a shortening of Lucifer? Or Loki (as is the intention behind Luke Skywalker in Star Wars as one of Loki's appellations is "skywalker"/"(Sky Traveler" more literally.) - [According to 人文科学論集: 文化コミュニケ-ション学科編 (Humanities Review: Cultural and Communication Studies), that appellation comes from the Prose Edda in the section "Loke's Wager With the Dwarves"] -- {Side note: Death Note was written starting in 2003, and Neil Gaiman's book which directly calls Loki "Loki Skywalker" was published in 2001) In truth the reason Ryuk is Luke/Luc seems heavily debated with no primary source from the author I can find, so I'm giving you the best options I could find. If I'm wrong on any of this, please feel free to correct me with sources.
This man is picking up on all of Light's subtleties, and instinctively noticing all of the symbolism sprinkled throughout.... I'm subscribing this second. I'm so excited to see this whole story unfold through fresh eyes. Also here is a blanket "thank you" to all of the reactors out there, for letting me vicariously relive some of my favorite stories!
Just discovered this lad and I’d have to say that this is the most posh, cultured reaction channel I’ve seen in a long time. I love the slight accent that comes out occasionally.
Physics educator reacting? I'd expect something more science (or more accurately sci-fi) related, like Dr Stone, Stein's Gate, or a mecha anime. This is a good one, though.
Fans of this series seem to be mixed on supporting Light or opposing him. I guess we already know which side you fall on. Your reaction style seems perfect for this show. I'm really excited to see your thoughts after the next episode.
I don't disagree. Thinking about it, Death Note became popular before anime started taking off in the west, so it was mostly edgy teenagers and not the popular kids who were watching anime back then. Then again, there are a lot more nihilists and other antisocial people online these days, so Light might still have a lot of supporters.
One thing I love about you as a reactor and commentator is your high emotional and intellectual intelligence when processing stories. Many people who watch media want to be entertained and don’t really pay attention to moral quandaries or apply sober sincerity to what they’re watching. It becomes about spectacle only! It’s so cathartic to see you understanding the moral, psychological, philosophical weight of things as soon as they’re presented!
So, ryuk doesn't find fun in gambling or writing human name himself. So instead he drop the note so human will use it and he could watch the chaos ensues.
Really excited to follow your journey with this show, it is a great show. I would love to hear more of your ideas of justice and when the lines get blurred.
Love the idea of the “Agree Count”. Everyone has their own limit on what they find acceptable, what they can bare. I’d be shitting myself after the second kill, once I realize it’s real. I’d probably bury the book or throw it in the ocean to be rid of it and remove the temptation. Everyone has a monster in them.
Yeah, there is a forest in all of us :( I think I will update it though after e4 the bus dude might be another, but I have to think more about that one :)
Ryuk was telling the truth, he really didn't think things through any further than I'm bored, humans mostly use English right? Write the instructions in English, drop the book, wait a few days and go see what happened for easy entertainment. I've always felt a very chaotic neutral vibe from Ryuk personally, he's delightful.
Havent watched ur vid yet but just from your professional background and your interest in watching anime. Your a god. Instant subscribed. Gonna let your videos build up then binge watch while eating. Thanks for the vid!!!
The English version is actually really good, I would highly recommend it if you want to switch. Also not sure if anyone has mentioned it but I believe this show still holds the record for most expensive per episode ever at around $1M per episode vs most shows are around $150K-$250K per episode. The animation, music, and voice acting are all great and still stand up to the test of time.
I think you can argue that the reason why Light wanted people to know of his existence is to prevent people from doing immoral things. That doesn't neccessarily exclude the idea of him being power-hungry and having a god complex, though.
7:18 What I'm going to say isn't a spoiler because it doesn't appear in the anime and it's still just a separate story, but there is a character who does exactly that in a spin off.
32:00 : Just that you know - I am a German lawyer and there is no such crime in our StGB. Doing something like that would count as a "Untauglicher Versuch" (inept attempt), which is so completly out there that even if by chance you would succeed (so, you curse someone to death and they die by heart attack a minute later), it still wouldn't be punishable because of the absurdity of the causal link. That said, in the death-note world, because of the certainty of the effect of death, writing in a deathnote would be sufficient for manslaughter or murder charges.
Truly, great reactions! Keep them coming! I just watched your Kyouraku Bleach reaction (latest episode) - got hooked on your analysis. Definitely watching the whole DN series again on this channel :D
good and evil are phantasms, abstract fixed ideas that coerce and influence our thinking and behavior. People are self-sacrificing in their efforts to act freely, such as someone who becomes a political martyr, they are self sacrificing for an idealistic motivation. Is that truly freedom? Or was the idealism, these ghostly phantasms haunting your mind that coerced your behavior and thinking leading to such martyrdom? You can replace that example with many things, say a person who jumps into a volcano to please god, is that really freedom? Or did what they believe to be good, and true, coerce their behavior and thinking, can you really say someone under the coercion of these phantasms is truly free? The avaricious man not being self-owned in his attempt to gain material possessions like wealth or a big house, instead he is a servant. He can do nothing for his own sake, without at the same time doing it for his lord's sake. Essentially the avaricious man is a slave to his own wealth, his own material greed. And thus he sacrifices himself, his personality, other things in life in pursuit of this singular goal. And that is just the same as how the political martyr, or the girl who threw herself into a volcano, are a slave to their political goals, or their idealism, or their god. This person is possessed by an external force, a phantasm or fixed idea, they are not self-owned, so how truly "Free" are they in their behavior or thinking? I would argue no, they are not free they are slaves to their own desires, ideas, society, etc. My take on freedom, is that the free person who has the most freedom, is someone who RESISTS the subjugation of both the forces external (politics, morality, god, the state, society), and internal (your thoughts, desires, idealism, hope). The person who truly is free does not allow these constraints to weigh them down, and instead view them as beneath one's self, or one's own property to do with as one wishes. This is what freedom is to me, a form of extreme individual autonomy. I personally do not value morality, or concepts like good or bad. But I will use these things to my own benefit, to my own self-interest. For example I bought a dude at the gas station a case of beer, cigs, and a bag of chips. Why? Not because it was the right thing to do, in fact a lot of people would say "noo dont buy homeless people alcohol and drugs", to them I REJECT their moral phantasms, and act entirely on my own volition. I gave the homeless dude beer and cigs and food because it made me feel good, that is all, nothing to do with the morality of the situation, or if it was the right or wrong choice, because I am above such notions. Here is a good quote I really enjoy: “Whoever will be free must make himself free. Freedom is no fairy gift to fall into a man's lap. What is freedom? To have the will to be responsible for one's self.” - Max Stirner Edit: btw to tie this into AOT. Eren was literally a slave to freedom in the abstract. This is because he made freedom, a fixed idea, a phantasm, that not only coerced but literally was deterministic in how he would behave and think. I think your concept of freedom, would improve if you knew more about Stirner's Egoism tbh. You're a really smart dude but I always pick up on things like this when you start talking about morality, good, evil, freedom, etc... But it does make sense you're a physics guy, not a philosophy guy, although I'd argue everyone is a philosopher to some degree.
That sounds a lot like buddhist thoughts, I think. A friend of mine thinks really similar, it is a very fruitful approach I think. =) I agree that good and evil are definitly abstract and not one dimensional, which many people do seem to think. But i think more discussions should wait for later =)
@@storieswithstyle Hm I never thought about Buddhism when talking about stirner's egoism. So to my knowledge the buddha advocates for reducing ones desires especially for material possessions, to decrease suffering. I think a distinction here would be stirner isn't really advocating for anything, but rather trying to make the unconscious egoist aware of such phantasms whether they're material or in your head, then using those "things" to your own benefit or self interest. So the egoist could enjoy a ton of material possessions, have a lot of desires, while also placing those things beneath herself. I see the connection you're making though, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about buddhism to give a good response to that topic. It is an interesting connection you made, I'll have to bring this up with some buddies I know who are more informed about Buddhism and eastern philosophy. Also it's worth noting Max Stirner had an incredibly depressing life. So I doubt he was ever too concerned with suffering or happiness, he seems to me to have been more focused on people being free, this hyper individualistic autonomy. That honestly, I can totally understand someone extremely depressed, being uplifted by. The Buddha seems to take the approach that if you just don't desire something, then you won't suffer as a result of your material condition. If I am correct, I disagree with the buddha on this. Like a lot. I think those earthly possessions or however it's described, is totally fine to enjoy, just as I think being sad, angry, or upset is totally fine. It's all apart of the human experience and I'm here for it... being that I'm a human living my life lmao.
@@raymundangelorobles3774 You should read and watch videos on Max Stirner it'll probably blow your mind even more when someone can articulate themselves much more coherently and precise than I can lol. I think I did a good job at rushing through a lot of it, but honestly I don't hold a candle to stirner's work let alone the obscure few who also enjoy his work and have spent decades or their whole lives being "egoists". I suggest the unique and it's property (thats the better translation). That's a great place to start. Be warned, it can be VERY convoluted so you may need a reading buddy who's already read through his work to help you. A lot of this sorta theory stuff is hard to understand on your first try, I would say "leftist theory" but stirner goes more into post-leftism. I mean, the guy is sorta responsible for making Marx so upset he incorporated materialism into hegel's dialect after all, which is how we ended up with das kapital and dialectical materialism, and marxism in general, Lol.
@@storieswithstyleTrue but a subjective objective standard could be set. Even in science a lot of reactions and events are relative to the observer and method of observation.
To give some points against using the Death Note: Something might feel justified in the moment, but for example, what if the reporters had it wrong on TV, and you follow through with a decision based on their understanding, or perhaps somebody else's bias, or framing. And wishing to save someone from a bad encounter with Death upon aggressors, is way more than an eye for an eye.
1:08 Actually this is one of those shows that does deserve a second watch. I don't normally go for dubbed versions, but this is one of the rare shows that has extraordinary voice acting in both the subbed and the dubbed. After you watch it in subbed, it would be worthwhile to watch it in dubbed afterwards (or at least watch some pivotal scenes) because the voice actors are perfectly cast. I've watched the series in both subbed and dubbed a dozen times, and I'd put them on the same level as Dragonball Z.
(no spoilers ahead) even if he's a psycho but let's say hypothetically he achieves a world where no one commits a crime. I know it's complicated but he is a genius so let's say he does it. Isn't it a good thing? He was even fully prepared for Ryuk to take his soul so he is ok with sacrificing his own soul for humanity. Doesn't the end justify the means if the end is literally a utopia where crime doesn't exist anymore? Think of the trillions of people he can save if that was achieved including a potential horrible crime done to your own loved ones.
The problem, with Light's ideology in particular is that he apparently has a broad definition of who a criminal is, including homeless people just trying to survive. And he really doesn't give a shit about justice as we shall see in later episodes.
There's a old law in Japan that was explore on a Lawyer TV series, a J-Drama call "Hero". And that law specificy that if the killer can prove he kill with supernatural powers and they cannot prove the direct connection the murder don't get condemn by it. In the show the attorney that was also the MC had to prove the murder happen within the know natural knowledge about reality and not supernatural. If I recall correctly in the show the murder said he was a psychic and used that power to kill his victim. You may think that's weird but you need to realize Japan has laws that are thousands of years old.
11:22 - Thank you. With any ethical dilemma it's really easy to come up with an absolutist ("ALWAYS" or "NEVER") stance and dig your heels in. The moment you take this seriously as basically a trolley problem of "Pull the lever and psycho dies. Do nothing and innocent kids die", you're opening yourself up. After all, if you justify the clearly justifiable, you then have to delineate where this ceases to be permissible.
For things that are seen later in my opinion, Light is a person with a strong sense of justice and a very correct person, but he gives him the power and responsibility to choose whether or not to use the deathnote to eliminate criminals and stop the wars in the world is a dilemma that would drive many crazy. Added to this, he knows that he is a prodigy and that he is one of the few people who could do it, which is why he feels chosen to save the world or that he has the responsibility to do so, The more he kills and uses this power, the more insane he becomes, gradually moving away from the initial motivation.
You? Watching DN? I AM READY Also, cram school is like a class students attend after regular school for extra tutoring. It's a common practice in Japan and other east asian countries.
In a way, everything that Light did after the first two kills was him coping trying to justify himself. Specialy considering he though the shinigami was gonna kill him or something.
the death note makes me think of sulla's proscriptions, where sulla of rome wrote the names of everyone who was to be killed by his regime. it had thousands of names on it and was posted everywhere
Welcome to an intense ride for your life! One which really does make you think about stuff like human nature, evil, good, etc. I loved your face at Light's rebuttal because it's something that so many understand intrinsically. Intellect means nothing without morality.
Hello there! now we get into ethics! I think I've watched almost every kind of Philosophy field at your channel. Plus physics/metaphysics at 3bp I'm so ready for this
@@storieswithstyle yes, this series is deep into. I'm full against KIRA. But the ethical conflict is quite dense and I understand people agreeing. It is so well done.
Haha, hello! :) I am 42 years old and have been watching anime since 1988 (I remember my first one like people remember their first love). I am here for the discussions, and I like your comments and reactions. Death Note is one of the Great ones. hope you will enjoy it
@@storieswithstyle Saber rider and the star sherifs, Voltron, Mado king granzort, Triton. There was a new tv chanell that did not have program for the morning hours and had to fill it in so they used music and anime :)
I appreciate that you immediately thought of good ways to use the Death Note! Being able to kill undetected is a huge amount of power and should be used with very careful consideration, if at all. Light is a bit of a "loose cannon."
Just my thoughts on this series: When it comes to him "punishing" people, or like the first two where he's killing a person to save some one else, how many of those are situations he could resolve without killing the person? The bully: He could walk over and stand up for the kid they're extorting, get an instructor, etc. but he goes straight to killing them. With the guys on the motorcycles with the girl: He has a cell phone and the guys name: Dial the emergency number, get the groups attention and loudly tell the emergency operator where they are and what's happening "A guy who said his name is XXXXXXX is assaulting a woman with his friends on motorcycles outside the convenience store at the corner of XXXX and YYYY street." But again, he goes straight to murder.
Also, a note on the question of "where does he go when he dies then?" In the original story, the phrasing was different. It was that people who use the Death Note go to Mu(nothingness) when they die.
Also also, I love how quickly you picked up on how once he started killing he went from wanting to kill "criminals" to "rotten people" and then "unwanted people." I'd also point out that by the time Ryuk arrives, he's consolidated them all to "evil people."
I am unsure about the cyclist, they might have just dragged her away =( But yeah, he is pretty quick to kill and quick to get over it as well, which is even more concerning
Not a spoiler, but there are a few fan theories about what happens to a notebook user after they die, just from the information provided in this first episode. One is that they go to purgatory, doomed to wander alone for eternity. Another is that their souls are destroyed by what they've done and they just have no afterlife. And my favourite is that they lose their memories and become new shinigami
Just so you know the reason why death note is so high quality in looks and audio quality to the point that it holds up to modern standards even when it was made in 2006 is because its the most expensive anime ever produced with a budget of 1 million. Honestly I wish modern studios would be willing to spend that much because with the amount of money behind studios and the quality available. Modern masterpieces like Vinland Saga or Frieren despite already looking gorgeous and incredibly well produced could be insanely high quality.
So glad I found this channel. Immediately subbed and am excited to go along with you on this ride, as this is the anime that made me realize the art form could convey deeper meaning than Pokemon or YuGiOh lol. You seem to already get the appeal of Death Note, as it's set up to make you question morality as a whole, the sanctity of human life, what actions may justify the means, and it really plays with you by having you follow who is essentially the villian as the protagonist and having you root for him without realizing it. Also figured I'd clear up what a Shinigami is, as the manga and anime don't ever really explain it well. 死神 is translated directly as "Death God", but they aren't really demons or Grim Reapers as the West would see them. They essentially are like higher plane parasites that feed off of human life, not malicious or really involved with humans at all for the most part, and they have their own rules that will be explained later on in the show.
It’ll be nice to follow your journey on this, it’s definitely not as complex as some of your other shows but it’s still a really fun watch with great moments.
Btw the english dub for this anime is really, really good. Not that i mind the japanese version, but just wanted to let you know. Also fun fact death note had an insanely high budget and each episode costed a little over 1million dollar.
2:03 "that's the most intense writing scene I've ever seen.."
Let's all wait for the potato chip
🤣
I'll take a potato chip, and eat it!
There's an entire 16-min video essay on why the chip scene is actually genius. It's a pretty good watch, as long as you've seen the scene before (obviously).
@@keegansantoroski9042 It's both a great scene and a great meme tbh 😋
@@Despotic_Waffle Love how people still say this iconic line. Death Note is timeless.
@@jessbellis9510 nah, the death note dint do anything evil to him, just reveal much of a monster he always has been.
@@jessbellis9510Nah light was always like this deep down inside. The deathnote only made him reveal his true nature
Yeah, he is basically at the 4d cinema xD
Ah, i see, that makes a lot more sense =)
Something I feel goes underappreciated is how QUICKLY Light devolves. At first it seems he has a fair point in using the Death Note to punish people the law wouldn't.
But within the span of that same first episode he goes full *god complex* and shows that he's always been kind of a psychopath.
Yeah, it is basically him realizing he can be what he always was, I do not think he "changed" =D
Exactly. He found a way to feed his god complex while also maintaining his “perfect” image.
15:07 subtitle says about just name variations, but what Light wrote is actually like this--
Shibuimaru Takuo - Accidental death
Shibuimalu Takuo - Accidental death
Sybuimaru Takuo - Accidental death
Shibuimaru Taquo - Accidental death
Shibuimaru Taccuo - Accidental death
Shibuimaru Takuwo - Accidental death
-- name variations that all sounds same + cause of death(Acctidental death)
I see, that is wild =D
I find death note episode 1 to be one of the greatest in all time, it sets up everything so perfectly that you just crave for more
Yeah, I really like the way the stuff was introduced =)
“That’s the most intense writing I’ve ever seen.”
Oh… it will get better 😂
I agree with you here my friend❤
"I'll take a potato chip, and eat it!"
Also the most epic =)
Light is not just a psychopath; he is a narcissist. "The world is rotten and only *I* can fix it." These are the words of a narcissist. Psychopathy is very prevalent in narcissists.
Malti hit it on the head when he said Light was a megalomaniac, which I believe is linked with narcissism, or is a particular type of it.
Yeah, he is something of that kind, It is just hard to exactly determine what exactly he is from one ep =)
Narcissism is kind of a trait of psychopathy in general.
nah man, Light is just an opportunist! He saw a chance...AND ATE IT!
Yea because people like you will prioritise the relief of their own personal discomfort over trying yo save millions of lives who each will individually suffer a fate worse than personal discomfort a million times over
If he happens to be narcissistic while doing a good thing, ide support that any day over the narcissists who think they're good for sitting back and acting like they're virtuous
He intentionally kills in a way that leaves a pattern. He wants the people of the world to notice, so they know their actions will be judged.
I'm a big fan of keeping the running kill count at the side. It's more than just you reacting, but also putting yourself in the story and engaging with the premise in a way I haven't seen other people do.
my reaction philosophy is "immerse yourself and engage with the material as if you watched something real happening in front of you". =)
I do my best, but sometimes I have really out there random hypotheses that never turn out to be true xD But thank you for the kind words =)

Absolute power shows what kind of person you are pretty quick.
Yeah, I love that theme =)
@@diablo.the.cheater Holy moly, I've never thought of it this way, that's so valid of a way to think about power, to me!!! 😄
Yeah, it is like "aren't these two test kills justified? Yeah, here, he killed 400 people he found on the news without really reading up on them" =D

I will watch out for that :D
This is the type of show that will start a lot of debate, especially on abstract topics like justice and morality. And yes, I'm calling those term abstract since the show itself will prove that they don't have clear definitions.
Yeah, they are hard to pinpoint. I had some discussions in my 3 body problem reactions as well. =) Facinating topic.
SO HYPE FOR THIS‼️‼️ I feel like you’re the perfect reactor for this show!! 👍
Thank you! =)
Lucicefers name translates to light bringer, fun fact
I believe the Death Note mentions Shinigami which is why Light says he was waiting for Ryuk.
It's also a common myth in Japan. So it wouldn't be a streach to imagine a book with the magical power to kill people to be related to a magical beign responsible for taking human lives.
Ah, that might be =)
A cram school is test-prep or that's what we'd call it in america. It stems from the idea of "cramming" together a bunch of info that you'll need to be prepared for some test or exam. Pretty sure its voluntary.
Ahh, that makes sense. =) I do not think we really have that in germany =)
I love how, when Ryuk tells Light he'd be the last evil person left, Light's reaction leaves even Ryuk, a god of death, speechless
I'm so hyped for ep 2, every time I watch it it gives me the chills, can't wait for you to experience it too
You're not wrong. Light is absolutely a psychopath.
I still love him though.

It's a bit of a Walter White situation where yeah, they're bad and doing bad things but you want to see them do it.
He is definitely really intreesting and fun to watch. =)
IMHO, a reason people sided with a villain, may be there is someone doing the dirty work for things you know you can't do it. Classic, paradoxical between utilitarianism vs absolute? morality.

He killed about 180 People on these two sides of his Death Note - but my buddy is diligent and worked overnight - let's count 1000 in this episode.
Great reaction of a great masterpiece. I can't wait to watch your reaction to the second episode.
Regarding to your great analysis, I think you've nailed it pretty much, but I'm going to comment on some elements of this episode without giving away spoilers of any kind:
- On the one hand, it's true that Light has written down a lot of names since he got his mind set on it, but let's look at certain elements:
--- From the little we have been able to see of his life, we can see that this young man is one of those "perfect" children who have never stepped out of line, who have always acted as expected of them, including achieving very high academic grades that make him one of the most brilliant teenagers in his country.
Great analysis considering I’ve already watched the series and didn’t know much about
Yeah, he definitely had a little panic time, but it was way too short for me to think he is an average guy morally wise :D

Actually, the name "Yagami Laito" can be translated to "moonlight god", which is incredibly fitting for this character
That is so cool! =)
Death note, I have read the manga, watched the anime, watched the live action movies, and now I am here to watch your reaction
I hope you will enjoy it! =)
Es war wunderbar! Keep going with this Reaction-analysis! That kind of perspective is so unique and schön!

According to the author, one of the reasons Light went so bad so fast was that he was such a good person before the death note he had no idea why someone could do any of the things he kills people for.
I am loving the analysis from the reaction.

Thank you, I am glad I bring some values with these reactions =)
You should also add a count for the number of people that he saved by the killing. Just the ones we know for a fact, those that we can actually see saved by his actions. I think this would be good to put things into prospective as we get farther into the show.
That might be interesting, I will tryto add it starting e3 =)
9:40 heard a very interesting account of this. Americas ace of aced back in ww2, Richard Bong downed over 40 aircraft himself, yet because he did so at such a close distance, he never actually saw the aftermath. During one mission he saw his ally take out a fighter, and witness the pilot die, and spent the next few hours puking and sobbing, realizing that in his goal to be the best pilot, he had killed 40 people. Obviously he knew the planes had pilots, but his brain never connected the "destroying plane means killing pilot sometimes", and it hit him all at once.
Fun fact! the shinigamis become "adict" to the first thing that they eat in the human world, thats why Ryuk like appls so much! lmao

@@storieswithstyle haha nice man I love your reactions and how deep you go with the themes and the writting
23:00 - Ryuk is the closest sound approximation to Luke/Luc. Luke goes back to Λουκᾶς (Loukas) "from Lucania". Now the fun part is what allusions that could be making. Is it Luc and a pun on a shortening of Lucifer?
Or Loki (as is the intention behind Luke Skywalker in Star Wars as one of Loki's appellations is "skywalker"/"(Sky Traveler" more literally.)
- [According to 人文科学論集: 文化コミュニケ-ション学科編 (Humanities Review: Cultural and Communication Studies), that appellation comes from the Prose Edda in the section "Loke's Wager With the Dwarves"]
-- {Side note: Death Note was written starting in 2003, and Neil Gaiman's book which directly calls Loki "Loki Skywalker" was published in 2001)
In truth the reason Ryuk is Luke/Luc seems heavily debated with no primary source from the author I can find, so I'm giving you the best options I could find. If I'm wrong on any of this, please feel free to correct me with sources.
I think both Loki and Lucifer would fit. The temptation and mischief are definitely both there! =)

I don't disagree. Thinking about it, Death Note became popular before anime started taking off in the west, so it was mostly edgy teenagers and not the popular kids who were watching anime back then. Then again, there are a lot more nihilists and other antisocial people online these days, so Light might still have a lot of supporters.

when he says that he won't go to hell or heaven, I always interpreted it as becoming a shinigami after death
I do too. Especially in a later manga side story when Ryuk talks to a Shinigami who bears a lot of similarities to Light.

Also not sure if anyone has mentioned it but I believe this show still holds the record for most expensive per episode ever at around $1M per episode vs most shows are around $150K-$250K per episode. The animation, music, and voice acting are all great and still stand up to the test of time.
I always watch originals, just my habit :D It is wild that they paid so much, but it must have been really hype when it came out =)
I think you can argue that the reason why Light wanted people to know of his existence is to prevent people from doing immoral things. That doesn't neccessarily exclude the idea of him being power-hungry and having a god complex, though.
Yeah, though light Light later thinks that Kira only kills evil murders, which confuses the hell out of me :D
Death Note is one hell of a story! Good content! And I love your dapper style!
First episode and he already has a god complex, this is the alluring corruption of power at work

7:18 What I'm going to say isn't a spoiler because it doesn't appear in the anime and it's still just a separate story, but there is a character who does exactly that in a spin off.
Interesting! =)

This show is a masterpiece. It isnt really about killing despite death being in the title, but rather the game of outwitting your opponent.
13:32 - Yeah, the Fallacy of the Converse. While most abusers were abused, that doesn't mean most abused people become abusers. Most don't.
good and evil are phantasms, abstract fixed ideas that coerce and influence our thinking and behavior.
To have the will to be responsible for one's self.” - Max Stirner
Edit: btw to tie this into AOT.
Brooo....this just blew my mind and opened it more when it comes to good vs. evil. (。ŏ﹏ŏ)
Honestly, I agree with Light's philosophy. As long as there was on objective standard applied for what is a "criminal" or "useless".
Yes, but that can not exist, as it is morale not science :)
@@storieswithstyleTrue but a subjective objective standard could be set. Even in science a lot of reactions and events are relative to the observer and method of observation.
Well, science hinges a lot on agreements, and so does law, it is just s different dimension :)
To give some points against using the Death Note:
Something might feel justified in the moment, but for example, what if the reporters had it wrong on TV, and you follow through with a decision based on their understanding, or perhaps somebody else's bias, or framing.
And wishing to save someone from a bad encounter with Death upon aggressors, is way more than an eye for an eye.
Yeah, my point exactly, do not just trust some news reports=(
Love your reaction sm
I'm so glad you are doing this series! 😊
It is pretty wild :D

I love that you paused to read that book. I have never paid attention to that at all and you're all like "Woah! Let's talk about this!"
I found it so funny that it also was Carl sagan, a physics educator, what a coincidence xD
I love Ryuk, he just eats all these apples and loves the taste and he definitely has fun now xD
Light is a monster. An insanely intelligent monster.
Definitely :)
Yeah, it is so complicated =(
For things that are seen later in my opinion, Light is a person with a strong sense of justice and a very correct person, but he gives him the power and responsibility to choose whether or not to use the deathnote to eliminate criminals and stop the wars in the world is a dilemma that would drive many crazy.
I AM READY
Also, cram school is like a class students attend after regular school for extra tutoring. It's a common practice in Japan and other east asian countries.
Ah, that does not really exist in germany =D
In a way, everything that Light did after the first two kills was him coping trying to justify himself. Specialy considering he though the shinigami was gonna kill him or something.
Love how you pick up on all the symbolism! I'll deffinitely follow this react series!
the death note makes me think of sulla's proscriptions, where sulla of rome wrote the names of everyone who was to be killed by his regime. it had thousands of names on it and was posted everywhere
Welcome to an intense ride for your life! One which really does make you think about stuff like human nature, evil, good, etc. I loved your face at Light's rebuttal because it's something that so many understand intrinsically. Intellect means nothing without morality.
I'm glad you're watching Death Note after Attack on Titan cause are my 1st and 2nd pref animes
So far it is really intresting. =) can't wait to watch more once my internet is back :)
Oh goodness, another one brought through this classic. I hope you enjoy the ride! 💞
Thanks, it is really fun =)
Hello there! now we get into ethics! I think I've watched almost every kind of Philosophy field at your channel. Plus physics/metaphysics at 3bp
I'm so ready for this
Yeah, the ethics will probably start a lot more soon :D
@@storieswithstyle yes, this series is deep into. I'm full against KIRA. But the ethical conflict is quite dense and I understand people agreeing. It is so well done.
Haha, hello! :) I am 42 years old and have been watching anime since 1988 (I remember my first one like people remember their first love). I am here for the discussions, and I like your comments and reactions. Death Note is one of the Great ones. hope you will enjoy it
That is so cool, what was you first one? Do you remember? =)
@@storieswithstyle Saber rider and the star sherifs, Voltron, Mado king granzort, Triton. There was a new tv chanell that did not have program for the morning hours and had to fill it in so they used music and anime :)
That sounds awesome :) I do not know them, earliest I know is berserk I think :)
@@storieswithstyle i can still sing every intro xD ruclips.net/video/awxKPdqLHGE/видео.html
@@storieswithstyle Berserk is on another level compared to these :)
Yeah, that might be =)
The text on the opening screen is read as "Shinigami Sekai" and it means "world of the death god(s)"
Wow, that is really a lot, I wonder why they never did that again, was it not a hit?
I just play it safe with dubs, but I know there are some very talented vas in dubs as well =) That is a mad budget :D
