    Great video. But you have misunderstood the healing mechanic in the game. It's nearly the same as Dark Souls. When you rest at a shrine, your "estus flasks" refill. I don't know why you imply it doesn't. The difference is that Nioh allows you to pick up non-permanent "estus flasks" in the environment. This is maxed at 10. But as you level up, you increase your permanent, refillable "estus flasks." In other words...you have 4 permanent estus flasks. You use them all. You pray at a shrine and you will get all 4 back. but if you pick up non-permanent estus flasks in the world (say you gather 2 more making your total 6) if you drink all of them, and rest at a shrine, you will revert back to 4.

    It's interesting to note that the 3 stances are based on Japanese Kendo.
    With the sword above your head, you are opening your defense for high attack power.
    With the the sword down you are measuring distance between you and your enemy (Real life), hence your speed is higher.
    With the sword in the middle you are in defense/default combat position.

    I've been waiting for a From Software set in a non-European setting. I just thought it would be BY From Software. Japanese mythology is TERRIFYING, so this is perfect.
    Now all we need is one based on Native American culture. Go north and you find Inuit cultures, killing off abandoned villages filled with wendigos. Go south and you'll find a giant bat for a boss in an Mayan temple full of mummies. I'm waiting, From Software.

    Actually, you know what this game reminds me of? Onimusha.
    Think about it, the game is reliant on being able to handle various enemies that follow the same rules you do. It punishes those who get greedy or plan improperly and rewards those who take their time and improve their skill. Hell, the combo system and otherwise can be related to the special attacks from the different weapons you got in Onimusha.
    Still, for that alone, I want to check this out.

      Lone Knight You DO realize that's the Ps2, which was considered by everyone to be the best console of it's time. (Hell it had THE best launch line up ever) The problem with the Onimusha series was just it didn't do so well when it tried to change things up with "Dawn Of Dreams"
      Plus Capcom being Capcom back around that time (2006) they were in their "change everything" stage. So you can guess why we never seen much from the Onimusha series again.

When I first learned about dark souls and started playing it, it seemed so hard because naturally you wouldn't think you could just phase through an attack. +Mike M you think in reality there's demons with might hulking fists in the first place it's a fantasy game they have to have I-frames or some boss fights would LITERALLY be impossible to beat just because of there sheer size of course it's going to make it less difficult but what your not accounting for is the enemies follow up attacks that can catch you right out of roll and them following it up afterwards with a big combo and getting perfect timing on rolls can be very difficult depending on the situation this its still difficult a lot of the enemies attacks are delayed specifically so it can catch you out of a roll dark souls is still pretty difficult

    • @toastybatch565
      @toastybatch565 8 лет назад

      The Jake eh I know what you're saying but Dark Souls really isn't difficult once you realize there's I frames. Also, 3 gives way too many rolls and s. I was never damaged in a roll. 2 was okay but bad hit boxes made some bosses wierd to deal with like Sinner. 1 was the best with rolling. Costed a lot, had to be timed right, and you couldn't just roll INTO attacks, because you would get damaged. You had to roll through them, left or right. It only had 4 roll directions though.

If you have 4 elixirs and 10 elixirs in storage, it will automatically take 4 from storage so you have the maximum 8 again. of course, you must return to a shrine (like bonfire in DS/ checkpoint) to reload the used items.

      Did you watch the video? Because it's not a comparison, it's drawing contra-standards to an absent yet associated title within the same medium. It's a way to start talking points without having to jump into and explain every detail because others have set the foundation before it.
      Also, there's nothing wrong with comparing likes. We don't live in a vacuum where other games were never created to compare to one another. You have to look at a body of work to get a sense of what's truly good and poor.

    • @misaeltoral508
      @misaeltoral508 8 лет назад +3

      +TerraMantis I was watching it as I was typing that. But still, the similarities are minimum to be honest, as other have pointed out. Nioh has more in common with other titles from Team Ninja and it shares just some mechanics with Dark Souls

    • @TerraMantis
      @TerraMantis  8 лет назад +19

      It's not "just some mechanics" that Nioh shares with Dark Souls. And it's definitely not "minimum" similarities.
      Shrines in Nioh act exactly like bonfires as checkpoints to rest and choose your Ninjustu and Magic loadout just like Sorceries and Miracles loadouts. Stats are almost identical to literally every Soulsborne game. Roughly 90% of the items in Nioh have literally the exact same effect as every consumable from Souls, but the names are different. Co-op works almost the exact same with phantoms. Death mechanics of retrieving your gravestone so you don't lose amrita (souls) from where you died last is the same as bloodstains. Amrita, like souls, is used as currency to level up just like Soulsborne. The armor weight system effects roll and dodging speed just like Souls. The elixir system is identical to blood vials from Bloodborne. Weapon stances of Nioh hold the same principle as weapon transformations of Bloodborne. The list goes on.
      I'm not saying Nioh isn't doing something very differently or putting its own spin on very similar concepts from Soulsborne - enough to such a degree that it's justifying itself to stand apart from Souls - but to say its similarities are minimal to Souls is ridiculous. The developers themselves compared it to Souls.

    I never had a problem with the Elixers and farming. Most of the enemies in the second stage drop at least 1 Elixer after death, plus you always get 3 elixer's from the shrine by default. Also, I'm pretty sure you can increase your Elixer restoration capacity by leveling up a certain stat (I forget which one it was, but I remember always starting with 4 after leveling up a bit instead of 3)

I got in love with my dodge system in DS3 - maybe I'm too unfair to want it in other games too but I'm just too addicted. Again thank you very much - your video was 100% what I was searching for since all the other reviews didn't answer my questions

      No problem. I'm glad you found something you're looking for. That said, the Alpha this video was based on and a Beta have both passed since this video was made and Team Ninja implemented a lot of feedback based off videos like this. A lot has changed since this video was made nearly a year ago now.
      There's a storage system which was showcased in the Beta and there are i-frames, but the i-frames are not as forgiving as Souls. I'm not telling you to go out and buy the game, just wait for people to talk about the final release before you jump to any conclusions. Feedback and development has altered the game a lot since the Alpha. I have other videos about the progression of the game as the year went on and I played it.

    The revenant system is something I've been wanting in the Souls games for a very long time now; what better way to keep 'online' play alive long after a game's life cycle than to immortalize real builds as npc summons/invaders? This almost makes up for the other lackluster elements of online play you mentioned.
    On another note, I was initially quite disappointed to learn that this game resembled Onimusha less than some had suggested, but it's looking like it may be quite a wonderful game after all, and one that I'll have an easier time getting one of my close friends to try out(I think he might even enjoy it more than I will), especially once they fix up the summoning system ;) I've had my fair share of solo play interspersed with random encounters over the last 5 years, and I'm ready for a soulslike in which co-op can be arranged directly for a change.

    Btw, i don't agree with your opinion to change the elixir. Like the souls series, depending how good you are at the game, you COULD technically run through it without being hit a single time. I mean, the guy in your vid was wearing no armour and didn't get hit once by the boss. Instead of seeing it as JUST an action RPG, I think the developers were going for a more gritty and dark SURVIVAL action RPG, which is why it'll be up to YOU, the player, to 'farm' for items. (I think they just intended for you to pick them up on the way) Well, it's just my opinion. It is it's own game after all.

    I can't help but kind of respect the way in which companies have been capitalizing off the idea of the Souls formula. Don't get me wrong, I'm usually not the type to respect developers who jump on bandwagon movements, but considering the Souls series has seen 3 sequels(including Bloodborne) since 2014 - and the series will probably be on hiatus for a while, we need some healthy competition. Beyond that, I like how they've been focused on creating different aesthetics and environments, since that's always important to the overall feel of a Souls game. I know many people were disappointed with Lords of the Fallen, but I think Nioh will probably give us enough variety and differentiation to make itself something great.

    I'm a huge fan of Koei Tecmo, so I was excited to give this game a try. I've been waiting since it's original announcement back with the PS3. However, I did not get a chance to really play the Alpha demo. The Beta demo has updated a couple of my initial concerns and I actually found it slightly easier. We'll see what the full release has going for it, but I'm so hyped.

  • @Nomans_Nomen

    Hmm... The alpha gameplay reminded me more of Onimusha and Ninja Gaiden than it did a souls game. Souls is definitely sprinkled in there, but I'd say this is more of a spiritual successor to Onimusha than anything else. Whatever Nioh may be, it's definitely a breath of fresh air.

    Pretty good video, but again familiarity with souls is causing him to gloss over important points based on presumed similarities. Not a unique issue though since I've seen a lot of people making the same mistakes.
    Just in the discussion of stances alone he's already undersold half the function and use of each stance, such as low stance having inifnite regular attacks in it's default combo as well as delivering OTG hits to fallen enemies consistently, high stance always driving down the enemy center line; but leaving your vulnerable to low stance dodge-strafing specifically or the variable amounts of stagger each stance can take or inflict. The kick can be mapped to any stance, not just mid as said in the video, like the stun aura. I am glad he actually saw video demonstrating the living weapon infinite combos I've talked about, though he doesn't seem to get how they work, or at least to explain it. Taking into account that factor, the player actually constantly has the advantage over each enemy in terms of abilities and options, seeing an enemy that can ki pulse would be interesting to see, or better yet perhaps a humanoid boss also able to deploy a guardian spirit as their living weapon.
    He's also completely wrong about stanima yet again, though it's the number 1 inaccuracy of the press and most LPers. I watched tbfp play and was infuriated that they ran out of ki TWICE without triggering the animation, yet the first time it happened they attributed it to running out of ki. This is something people coming from souls are consistently overlooking, depleting your ki incurs no penalty, and in fact the last move to reduce your ki to 0 has however much more than 0 would have been spent included as free. Then attempting to spend ki WHILE ALREADY at 0, the animation is triggered. A reserved player who feels out the number of hits they can land in each stance will never trigger the animation even once. So I actually love this element and consider it the core of Nioh's combat, baiting foes into over-exerting themselves so that you can hammer down their ki with regular attacks or combos, then exploit their vulnerability. The fact that different enemies tire at different rates, have different stats and that you're required to observe and react to these on an individual basis makes every enemy far more engaging. He also doesn't discuss how yokai work by a different ki system, where instead of opening up to grapples, they instead suffer increased stun damage, allowing a player who's savvy at ki pulsing or pops living weapon and doesn't relent to finish them off the second their ki flashes red. It's a small thing, but it makes enemies much larger than you feel a lot more thrilling to fight and rewards you for not conceding too much ground or backing off.
    Storage definitely does need to be implemented and weapon disassembly needs to be made more obvious since the familiarity system is going to stump a lot of people otherwise, and I'd prefer to have some fusion mechanic to allow me to level a weapon to equal that of a stronger one I obtain if I just prefer that weaker weapon. I would however not prefer a straight up estus system but some level of compromise between estus and bloodborne, allowing weaker players to farm higher amounts like bloodborne and store them would be great, with a base amount that can be increased over time for dark souls purists. Or perhaps more along the DS2 method of having a non-replenished grindable item for struggling players, while letting more confident players stick to elixirs. Item switching could also use some work, I'd rather have two of the buttons scroll through a list and the other use the highlighted item rather than only have 3 available, I frequently wanted to have my onmyo talisman, my caltrops and my healing item equipped but then also have the firebombs .etc available as well. And while the game drops ample whetstones and glue, I'd much rather just have lower durability on items but replenish it at shrines if they're unbroken. Totes agree on PVP arenas .etc, but I could do without going too soulsy with covenants and the like either. Overall though I largely agree and look forward to seeing changes made in a subsequent alpha or beta. Considering how much TecmoKoei took on feedback from toukiden's early feedback, I expect a lot to be added or changed over time given their record.

      @DatAsuna 8 лет назад

      washaa Yeah and I made use of that too, but it's still random what you get in rewards, even if elixirs are the most common; once you hit 10 elixirs, you just can't pick up any extras, period meaning I tried to roll with no more than 9 at any given time. A storage box is an absolute must for the final game.

    Well Terra, it looks like you got all of your wishes. I've finished every bit of content in the beta and they've done everything right this time around, I could play with my friends on any level as we saw fit, the way you can jump into random games is also great and every complaint you had here was the same as mine during the alpha and it's all been looked at and fixed accordingly, I hope other dark souls fans can enjoy this game to the extent that I finally have, I want it to go far and have a community much like souls. I do think tecmo/koei is making a mistake in not releasing this game in multiplatform/pc i absolutely loved the alpha, while being punishing ( even more than dark souls ) you learn so much every time you die while the combat system is phenomenal and deep, This game definitely deserves to be played by everyone and from what i know they dont seem to have made a deal with sony on this one, it seems they are willing to skip making money on this game..

      Why do you think this game is exclusive? Because they made a deal with Sony. Tecmo have no control of what system they can put it on, only Sony has that right. And actually you can make much more money by focusing the game on one console, look at the last of us, uncharted 4, halo, bloodborne, Etc. And one thing is for sure, it's to sell consoles.

    • @franciscor390
      @franciscor390 8 лет назад +1

      +Taylor Sparks Those games you just mentioned are all first party, really bad examples. it's really not the same but sure if they striked a deal like Nintendo did with Bayonetta 2 or what Sony did with Bloodborne It would be obvious. A few things that have changed based on the Last Chance Demo.
    1. There is password matching now akin to DS3 and BB. It is the Secret Word system.
    2. Rumor has it that they are planning an arena for PvP but I haven't heard if that'll be at release or down the road.
    3. Elixers are now stored in a storage house of sorts and hold a limited number of a certain item to actually discourage farming for elixers and the like.
    4. I have been playing Souls since Demons Souls and I found myself hopping right into the combat in a survivable manner within about 3 or 4 deaths. The game is brutally punishing but you tune in on it pretty quickly. I really struggled with the first boss of the LCB but after I beat her the first time I rarely died again until I tried it on Twilight Mission mode with a friend. Twice we got pseudo-cheated out of victory as we felt before the beta went down at 2AM Monday morning.

      Alex there's several videos on this channel that follow the progression and changes of the game over the course of the past 10 months across the Alpha, Beta and some closed-doors time I had with the game and the lead developers. If you'd like to watch those just go to this channel's homepage and the videos are under the "Nioh" section. I will say though that basically every issue or problem I stated with Nioh in this video has been addressed. Not only that but each time Team Ninja has released a trial of the game they contacted myself and others like me for feedback. Again, nearly every criticism I've had each time has been addressed with changes to the game. They're doing a fantastic job absorbing and implementing feedback.
      Additionally, literally just today, Team Ninja just announced a final Beta for 48 hours starting on the 20th of January. So you can test the game out and the changes for yourself if you have a PS4. Last but not least, they also announced a free PvP patch that will be added on to the game after launch. Alright, hope that helps.

That being said when i first played nioh i thought the same way and thought it should be more like the estus flask until i gave it some more thought the game thrives on being near perfect and through the demo i've became more better at the game and i wasnt losing as much healing items as i was when i first started. Same with bloodborne I was constantly running out of blood vials because i tried to dish out as much damage as possible without giving my stamina any consideration, I don't think the blood vial mechanics in bloodborne were that bad, same with the elixirs in nioh the only problem i've had was not being able to keep a certain amount of surplus which didn't bother me as much as it used to since i've played enough to get most of the mechanics down and learn the enemy's pattern.

You could try not spending hours grinding for Elixirs and spend it focusing on the boss and gameplay mechanics along with the enemy layouts. After I platinum'd all of the Souls games and Bloodborne and after I beat all of the Alpha and Beta content I'd just say it goes hand in hand with the game's difficulty. I beat the first boss at level five and the second at 16 in the Beta. The third at 20 all severely under leveled. Totally cool with it keeping its healing item system from the Alpha.

I love Bloodborne though, because if you suck at it so bad I like the idea that you can't get blood vials at lamps. If you want to go without healing items, git gud. If you want them you have to farm the fuck out of them. I just like the idea of people rage quitting in Bloodborne because they're so bad they have to use blood vials as soon as they get them. Especially when you look at like the Trophy percentages, so many people rage quit that game.
      If Nioh didn't refill I'd be okay with it. Unfortunately, we live in a world where this game has to make money. I just hope it crushes Souls fans. The only ones I found of any challenge were parts of Bloodborne and DS1.

    I love souls games not only for combat, I think that the most enjoyable part of game that makes me stay in there for long-long time is multiplayer and alas this game will lack one. Also I really like to customize my character, "create" some kind of backstory for them, to be able to choose their sex, clothing and way they behave, however it seems that Nioh will have already preset character for everyone as well as written backstory and plot interaction. I think many players will feel in the same way and some developers forget when they claim their game to be "soulslike" that not combat system and being "hard and punishing" makes souls game to be a souls game.

    • @adradox
      @adradox 8 лет назад +1

      I never said anything about copying, I'm just saying that inspiration lies not only in combat and the game being punishing. Ninja Gaiden was hard and punishing with in-depths combat system - but was it "soulslike"? I doubt so. It just gives me impression when developers are giving statements like that, they, in fact, just want to get additional audience from souls games fans.

    7:52 I can't belive at some point in development they thought it was a good idea to not allow you to store elixirs. In the current version it's even more of a non-issue than in Bloodborne, since after you get comfortable enough with the fighting you'll have hundreds and hundreds of elixirs in storage at all times.
    Wow, they really changed a lot from the alpha.

    Looks way interesting. Maybe the (estus) in Nioh will be fixed: a player can take steps to raise their "minimum" level of flasks, but they still have the option to farm for more. That way, death will not condemn a player to farming from weak mobs, but if said player wants to face a boss, they can always improve their chances by grabbing extras before the fight.
    Also, the lack of s and shields seems like a good mixup. I couldn't imagine fighting a prowling demon (DaS I) without either.

      Yup, to me souls clunky design is poke and roll and repeat. Kinda boring.

      @@yrh002b8 i finally just beat dark souls 3 and can say, it was the most boring ive had with a game. enemies werent hard they were just glitchy. they can literally 180 from any position, thats not natural. and the dodge roll is sooooooooooooo clunky. If it wasnt for the cool art style of the monsters, i wouldnt of made it through.

      Dark souls has more atmosphere, the bosses are not a chore to fight and the loot its not overwhelming.

    I would remove durability from weapons... it's annoying on dark souls (especially DS2, since it's pretty hard to break your weapon on DS1 and 3) and even more in NIOH. A good thing though is that you dont need to warp to level up like you do in DS2, 3 and bloodborne... DS1 did it right allowing you to lvl up at the bonfire, so does NIOH, but those other 3 games force you to endure 2 loading screens (one for you to reach firelink shrine for example and the other one to get back to where you were) and it's completely unnecessary. I would even consider it "bad design".

      The Wild Wolf! I hated the bonfire level up system it was dumb seriously it makes sense to have something that can draw your true strength but that's me
