Hi Chinwendu. I'm Nigerian as well. I wanted to ask about how your journey in Industrial Design is going. Are you based in Nigeria? I am. I don't know what the job market is like for this field and that's why I'm asking. I just started a degree in Architecture but I've never really been interested in studying it. Would you say a degree is necessary to get a job?

To be a well rounded industrial designer, you need to be able to product quick "ideation sketches", which don't take much time, and can be pretty ugly. But once a direction is chosen, you should be able to do a more detailed rendering in photoshop, and potentially a basic 3D model. Nice drawings DO sell ideas though, so it's worth the time to keep improving.

Hello, I am a new industrial designer who has been working for more than two years and is considering changing jobs. When I was preparing my portfolio, I was confused. The portfolio during my university time required more to show your design thinking ability, the production process, etc., and the rendering and final model were only a part of it. However, when I observe the portfolios of many professional designers, I find that they choose to include more beautiful renderings or videos, and the hand-drawn or production process will only be included in a few or not at all. And in my current job, I don't complete the whole project like I did in college, usually only responsible for a part of it. So when making a job-seeking design portfolio, which type of form should I follow?
You're right. I'm too busy trying to sketch a pretty picture, that it makes me feel down every time it doesn't come out right. This whole "submit a portfolio" thing is very stressful.
Very meaningful video ! I like the way you talk about how to sketch, how to feel and be comfortable to show your own ideal without any fear about your skills But anyways sketch is the things you must do all over the time of your life when you're a industrial designer Practices and try to learn more techniques from the others and make them to be yours ! ☺
I'm studying industrial designe. Antes I like a lot what you say because is totally true. You have to be good communicating your idea more and doing a pretty drawing. After all, that is not your product is just a design process.
😎 Hi Jimmy! My grade 5A Debate class says this: (1) Are you Korean? Because we are Korean. (2) We don't have those drawing skills, but we will try to design our class project designs as best as we can! (3) Good luck, Jimmy!🎇
Back in 1989 my sketching would be about 20 to 30 percent. I would spend about 40 percent time trying concept modelling in plaster, wood, plastics, metals and even clay to assess aesthetics (proportions, radii, merging surfaces and overall form). Balance 30 to 40 percent time would go towards spray paint work, mockups and technical drawings. Back then we didn't have any 3d modelling and visualization softwares.
Hey I have to draw a product by taking only one fruit just like a product designing and the product should look like it is actually made by a fruit so any idea???...plzz reply
Hi! I am your viewer from Russia and I want to study Industrial Design at the Humber College in Canada. Can you make a video with some piece of advice for students who try to apply this program please? What to write ia a motivation letter, what pictures should be added in a portfolio and etc. Thank you)
Hi I study industrial design and have drawing classes. Drawing the product has to be fast, but you must have an amazing skill to do it. You don't actually draw it - you construct it on a paper with geometric shapes. Plus perspectives, grids, etc. It's about showing that you understand the form, not about adding some lines to a sketch
Hi Jimmy! Love the video. One question, how much do the tools matter here? What I mean is, I really want to learn how to sketch like this, but what am I best off using to do it? Photoshop with a Wacom? A tablet with maybe an active fine-point stylus? Maybe I should really just get a stack of actual blank paper and a regular HB pencil and start that way? I especially like the look of the sketch of the umbrella crutch around 6:36, but I can't tell if this was actually done with pencil or if it's digital. Also, I've seen that some people do the effect like at 1:16 where they overshoot the lines a bit. Is there a purpose to this, or is it purely aesthetic?
The fluidity available with pencil sketching is rarely matched by the devices you mentioned. The tools like modelling and visualization softwares have utility only AFTER you have generated concepts. They can never be a substitute for the complex flow of thoughts you are deliberately thinking in order to generate ideas. They are not tools for designing. They are tools for representing and communicating design ideas.
How did you get the tooth brush idea I came up with the same product years ago and I had a lot stolen from then did some one sell you this or did you came up with it because I came up with this like 6 years ago
And here I am, thinking about the best way to hold a pen. When drawing, do industrial designers: 1. Float their hand? 2. Touch the paper/wacom with only finger(s)? 3. Touch the paper/wacom with the entire underside of their palm? 4. Do they rest their elbow on the table? Etc. I'm having calluses on the tip of my fingers by practicing like mad but I'm still struggling between straight line/eclipse accuracy and control, and smudges, or fighting the edges of the paper.
For people that CAN draw well, you're already there. Art school with just two theories on perspective and color theory and you're good to go. The classes are for people who picked up drawing late and trying to make up the gap. It's just like music lessons or playing sports. If you've done it since u were a kid there's not much more school can teach. Now schools do need to make a little money but not take 4 years of my tuition money for something I can do already.
Hi Jimmy, love the video. Just found you by browsing. I have a question, I’m working on a project, about 80”x40”x10”. When trying to render that in a notebook drawing, what is the best perspective? How is the best way to depict only parts of it? TIA.
So you didn't explain how to sketch. You just emphasised that they can be basic. Also...removing the background from a scanned drawing, time consuming? In photoshop: blending options > blend if > this layer.....spread the whites with alt. Next layer.
He explains that you need to draw simplistically and create a drawing where it is easy to tell what the product is. You seem to be wanting a completely different set of videos, such as videos over how to actually draw. He doesn't touch on the basics because the main subject of a video is how to do things that are specifically like an industrial designer.
and don't forget about mockups... All these sketches on sketchbooks or notebooks are just some sketches put together (close to each other) and then layered on a mockup, so it looks like a professional photo of a sketchbook (wich in real life would not has this good quality if you don't have a really good camera) ;)
My very first drawing philosophy when I was around 11 years old was "Draw what you see"...Maybe my 11 year old self can help you out a bit with this throught. Pick up a ball point and try it out jan.
heyy...pls tell me are u a product designer?if yes,pls pls pls give a some information about it...m Indian n right now in 12th preparing for UCEED an entrance for industrial design..i want some basic info about the field...like specializations, demand, study etc...searched on net bt was not satisfied...pls help me out😊waiting for ur reply..

Being gifted in sketching is hardly a prerequisite for being an Industrial designer. You'll pick up the skills as you study it. What's absolutely essential is a creative bent of mind, an ability to go beyond the obvious and an inclination to generate many alternative solution ideas for a given problem. Creativity and lateral thinking skills come first.
Hi Jimmy. Good u made a video on something really important like sketching. Tell me something, most ID sketches are either digital or made with markers and pens. Do you think just a pencil is a good idea for industrial design sketching? Is it just the form and style or medium of sketching also plays a role?
For me, the main goals is to convey the idea of the product to others. It's not the media that matters, but the situation and context of it. If the sketches is intended as main image for formal presentation bring the best you can digital and manual also can be combined and time still matters. But if you just want to take notes on the idea that flash in your head, a pen and napkin is adequate.
industrial designers should learn to make their designs in 3d so they can see just how bad some of their drawings translate when they arent heavily stylized with edge weights or fancy exaggerated rendering.
Back in 1989 when I graduated in Industrial Design, they would not emphasize Engineering or technical aspects. Only a good understanding of different materials that go into making products in modern factories was expected. However, I would maintain that a sound foundation in the area of DFM ( design for manufacture) should be essential today as DFM addresses manufacturability issues of designs created by Industrial designers.
This video made my day.
Thank you so much.
I've been wrapping my head around product design but this explained a whole lot to me.
Thank you.

Thank you. This really helped me with my sketching!
I like the way you talk about how to sketch, how to feel and be comfortable to show your own ideal without any fear about your skills
But anyways sketch is the things you must do all over the time of your life when you're a industrial designer
Practices and try to learn more techniques from the others and make them to be yours ! ☺
I'm studying industrial designe. Antes I like a lot what you say because is totally true. You have to be good communicating your idea more and doing a pretty drawing. After all, that is not your product is just a design process.
Nice looking sketches..
What would be a good app for starting to create good sketching skills digitally on an iPad Pro as a beginner?
Procreate for sure !
Awesome! Thanks for the lead ED!
😎 Hi Jimmy! My grade 5A Debate class says this: (1) Are you Korean? Because we are Korean. (2) We don't have those drawing skills, but we will try to design our class project designs as best as we can! (3) Good luck, Jimmy!🎇
I’m so glad I watched this. What percentage of drawing to other type of work does a product designer do?
Back in 1989 my sketching would be about 20 to 30 percent. I would spend about 40 percent time trying concept modelling in plaster, wood, plastics, metals and even clay to assess aesthetics (proportions, radii, merging surfaces and overall form). Balance 30 to 40 percent time would go towards spray paint work, mockups and technical drawings. Back then we didn't have any 3d modelling and visualization softwares.
ur life is goated
Hey I have to draw a product by taking only one fruit just like a product designing and the product should look like it is actually made by a fruit so any idea???...plzz reply
I really enjoyed watching this amazing video. Very interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Have u seen work of sangwon seok? I think he is the best
2 types of sketches, exploration and presentation renders. You show both, but they are different and have different uses.
This video is very helpful, Industrial design sketching is so interesting.
Hi! I am your viewer from Russia and I want to study Industrial Design at the Humber College in Canada. Can you make a video with some piece of advice for students who try to apply this program please? What to write ia a motivation letter, what pictures should be added in a portfolio and etc. Thank you)
Hey did you get get through? I hope it went well and you could get admission at the Humber college
What is it like?
4:57 Who is this Sang Won you speak of? How do I spell their name?
How did you get the tooth brush idea I came up with the same product years ago and I had a lot stolen from then did some one sell you this or did you came up with it because I came up with this like 6 years ago
Love the examples thank you for the knowledge, also you've given me great ease of mind!!!
What is the best software for product design ?
And here I am, thinking about the best way to hold a pen. When drawing, do industrial designers:
What is the difference between automobile designing and product designing...?
Automobile design is a subset of product design.
how can i get these brushes for Photoshop?
For people that CAN draw well, you're already there. Art school with just two theories on perspective and color theory and you're good to go. The classes are for people who picked up drawing late and trying to make up the gap. It's just like music lessons or playing sports. If you've done it since u were a kid there's not much more school can teach. Now schools do need to make a little money but not take 4 years of my tuition money for something I can do already.
Bloody phenomenal video !!!, very informative and on point 👍👍 thank you so much
Love the videos. Really great for my design students :)
Bro you got sketch reference images better than my product design professor
Bro! Can we get some crossfades on that audio tho?
Hi Jimmy, love the video. Just found you by browsing. I have a question, I’m working on a project, about 80”x40”x10”. When trying to render that in a notebook drawing, what is the best perspective? How is the best way to depict only parts of it? TIA.
Thank you for this inspiring video
Great video 🤪
Can you draw folding iron for me? I really need help😭
Hi Jimmy, I like your video. Do you use iPad to sketch? I've made an app called Sketcha. I'd like to have your feedback and improve it. Thanks!
This is really helpful, thank you!
Great tips, thanks for this video
Thanks
I like doing mechs based on animals and I like making little notes on each part like it is a future invention to be made 😭😭💅
Wait I aint mean to put 💅 💀💀💀
That's awwwwwsome
Great content. Very helpful. Thanks!
plz can anyone tell me is product design and industrial design same? of different?
Product Design is like UX design (2D GUI type of things). Industrial Design is 3D, hardware, soft goods. The design of physical consumer products.
So you didn't explain how to sketch. You just emphasised that they can be basic. Also...removing the background from a scanned drawing, time consuming? In photoshop: blending options > blend if > this layer.....spread the whites with alt. Next layer.
Sounds like you're a pro Dave! Would love to see some videos sharing how to do it all man.
I would love to study Industrie Design ❤
yoyoyooooo great vid
Can someone please tell me what degree program will incorporate two things I love to do. I love to make furniture and wall decor..
Interior Design for sure.
I hope I can benefit from this video, im a 11th grader looking into Pdesign myself for my major, really interesting explanation and a sub from me
Great video. Great advice. Thanks for sharing.

I wanna be product designer.... Please help me out in this.
I want a professional to get help from , and u are... 😅Please.
I'm watching this in a school lesson
awsome
this doesnt even have to apply only for product designers, it applies for drawing in general
Why does this sound like chris fix here.
Oh god, it does 😂

Good ''Models' I like that dangerous place.
2:40 thought it was a jetpack! lol
This is the link my technical teacher sent me for homework
Good to hear!
same lol
great!
industrial designers should learn to make their designs in 3d so they can see just how bad some of their drawings translate when they arent heavily stylized with edge weights or fancy exaggerated rendering.
You provide great tips, thanks. But please take a pause between each sentence, gimme a chance to process the information!!
Were you taught engineering knowledge or skills? I know some ID schools have a mechanical or material engineering base
I'm also interested in the technical aspect so I dont know which path follow.
Back in 1989 when I graduated in Industrial Design, they would not emphasize Engineering or technical aspects. Only a good understanding of different materials that go into making products in modern factories was expected. However, I would maintain that a sound foundation in the area of DFM ( design for manufacture) should be essential today as DFM addresses manufacturability issues of designs created by Industrial designers.
nice vid
