In October 1691, a man confessed before the judges of Jürgensburg in Swedish Livonia that he was a werewolf. Known as Old Thiess, the eighty year old man claimed to have been a “hound of God” who “entered Hell at certain times of the year, not to serve Satan - as the judges insisted - but to fight him”. And so, far from being a monster, some manner of dark cryptid creature, he was a vehicle of divinity…

Student of history here! For those, who are interested in the "battle between good and bad forces" acpect of this case, I recommend the short book Benandanti by Carlo Ginzburg. Its esentially collection of court cases/inquisition interrogation of witches/wizard, who called themselves "benandanti" and who were battling the evil witches and devil in ceratin times of the year (usually to protect the harvest, etc.)

Thank you so much for sharing that! I think it’s fascinating but I wonder whether they are all described as bad witches bc not all of them worship the devil e.g Wicca and other branches of the pagan nature worshiping and healing ❤️‍🩹 religion we had from which Bridgette the Goddess of creative abilities, a muse for writers and poets and of fertility etc and in Ireland was made into a saint in order to persuade the Irish to convert to Christianity!
Timeline the history documentary channel available on RUclips has an episode about Wicca which is the fastest growing religion in the UK today! Blessings 🙏

Hey Laura. Thank you for posting this interesting Nordic country case on my 30th birthday. I have a proposal for another one: a ship on Icelandic waters was caught in a storm. Of the seven sailors capsized out there, three caught onto the boat and tried kicking towards shore through the night. Three turned to one and after kicking back to shore, he had to swim further to give a place to beach on land, fainting when he reached a farmhouse. The “selkie man” is a true story from Iceland that warrants more research.

That was a good werewolf story. Old Theiss seemed like a good man at heart too.
Stories of dogmen & some cases of werewolves were referred to a medical condition, called Cynocephaly. It's interesting that in orthodox christian churches St. Christopher was said to have been from Syria & a dogman. Not only that there are religious icons depicted in gilded frames of his stature as such.
In some native beliefs, there are those born with 2 wolf spirits inside, the good & the bad. Many have asked which one will survive? The elder shaman replied, the one you feed.
It is also believed that the Creator gave the werewolves the gift, in order to help protect the tribe or peoples.
I've heard of the Benandanti "wolves of God" too. They are said to have the ability to literally hunt evil.

Livonia was the Swedish name for Latvia today. As a Latvian American, I can tell you that my proud Pagan ancestry had a werewolf god in their pantheon of Pagan Gods and Goddesses. His name was Vilkis (which today is the Latvian general word for wolf.) Vilkis translates to roughly "He whose eyes glow" Vilkis had a strong cult following. The God of Warriors, Cunning, and Shapeshifting. It is said in numerous folk songs and myths we have. One could be bestowed with the power of shapeshifting with certain rituals. Vilkis was NOT evil though! He was a protector of our people from countless invasions by foreign powers. Even today the Latvian army proudly has him as a mascot. The belief in Vilkis processed into the 20th century. Even my Latvian grandmom would draw the curtains in my room shut on full moon nights because it was believed moonbeams shining on you while you slept Vilkis would claim you as one of his own. You've become Wild and eventually transform into a wolf claimed by the wild places. Most of Europe's werewolf tales come from our sister nations of Lithuania and Latvia. Even more so many Latvians still strongly believe in our old Gods and Goddesses and remain Pagan. As do I. But of course, these are old wise tales and myths and are dismissed. Every myth has a bases in fact... Hooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwlllllllll :)

Now if you want to become a Werewolf yourself. It’s rather simple procedure account to Latvian sacred folklore and history. First, you need a good working knowledge of Leylines and Earth Energy Vortex. (Example is Coral Castle, Homestead Florida built by a Latvian btw.) Then, on a full moon night. Go out into the DEEP forest aka virgin forest and find a Natural Archway formed by one or two trees. You know when a tree grows wrong bends over and buries its top into the ground forming an arch! Now you need to strip off and wear something of authentic wolf fur, it could be a pelt, a belt, a headdress. And walk into and under the arch. Into the protal over the ley line! You will start to transform over the next 1-3 months. Becoming more and more a wild man or woman. You might even leave your family a village preferring the forest instead the company of man.
Lai Dievs svētī Latviju un manu tautu!

It is always refreshing to hear about the "creatures of the night" in a benevolent context instead of being portrayed as evil. I find Old Thiess quite fascinating and would have loved to have known him when he was alive. I agree with another commenter that, if given the chance to travel back in time, I would visit Theiss. Imagine the knowledge and amazing stories that he would pass on! 🐺

Thank you once again Laura for your incredible research and storytelling in such a “you can choose to believe, or not” fashion. It’s quite different than any other channel I’ve listened to, so I just keep waiting for your notifications and click them immediately! This one sort of baffles me, as so much “history” of the Lycan states that they had such strength and power, but this man claims that he essentially aged just as anyone would. It most certainly throws a curve ball into the world we want to desperately know more about! I cannot decide which it is with this man, it’s a bit easier to think he’d just lost his marbles, but, what was the age expectancy back then? He was 80? If he lived that long, and the age expectancy today being that of 77 for men, back then it would only make for it to be far lower. But I’m not a historian and am only guessing. An excellent video, thanks again!!

Ok, so I read some comments, and found out about Benandani. The Amish here in the USA, I should say...the strictest Swartzentruber Amish (Old Order) practice "witchcraft". Albeit, over time it's become distorted (like their odd beliefs), but NOW I totally understand how they even know about that kind of stuff. Their founding fathers brought it with them from Switzerland and Germany.
I am learning so so much. I thought I was highly educated lol. This just isn't something I ever looked into. I'm a student of History, but a diff. genre of History. So anyways, this is awesome. I am a "Lerd", a nerd for learning. I feel rather giddy about all this. Excited you could say. At 55, and never having to have a 9-5 as they say here, I've spent all my time researching everything my heart is interested in, until I've exhausted the topic, or grown tired of it. FINALLY something new, that isn't on the boring side.

Nice story, and it is still amazing how stories can take on a life all of their own when repeated often enough. I once had an encounter with a Werewolf, and it was nasty, bearing its teeth, foaming at the mouth. Thankfully the mother-in-law passed on, poor rabid thing. I miss her howling in the kitchen.

Fascinating video. I am reminded of how traditional Mexican shamans, who first and foremost are protectors of their respective communities, are also said to be able to transform into the guises of power animals (which can involve dogs and wolves) and journey to other dimensions as well as fighting against supernatural evil entities.
