I was born in Alexandria, Virginia, a few blocks from Lee's boyhood home. I grew up playing on the lawn of Mount Vernon, George Washington's home. I spent many joyous fieldtrips in Williamsburg and Jamestowne. I always dreamed of having a library like Thomas Jefferson's. I would visit James Madison's home and imagine all of the trials and victories surrounding our constitution. I learned of pride, honour, duty, integrity, and loyalty from the lives of Virginians past. I am a Virginian.
I am Virginian born and raised. I love my state and when I listen to this song I am always brought to tears. God bless Virgnia. Sic Semper Tyrannis!
I am New York born and bred. But 3 months ago, my wife and I spent several days in Virginia AND FELL IN LOVE WITH IT! How blessed you virginians are to live in such a place!

I was visiting in London some years ago and went into the Albert Arms pub near Elephant and Castle. I got into a conversation with a very old gentleman named Freddy who asked me where I was from. i told him Virginia. To my astonishment Freddy then stood up in the pub and sang Carry Me Back to Old Virginia. He didn't miss a verse.

@rebsiegel Save for all the taxes we pay, including the 5% annual Personal Property Tax on the book value of each vehicle one owns (Certain exceptions to reduce the amounts owed are available depending on the vehicle's use), and Fairfax County in Northern Virginia is the second most expensive place to live after Orange County, CA for the cost of living (taxes, property prices, food costs, etc).

Nicely done. Virginia truly is a great state with a great history. Like every other state and the Union, it has episodes in its history to be ashamed of, but it has so much more to be proud of. This song for me is about the proud history of Virginia; it's not about racism. It's about a proud people that stood against tyranny and imposed control from Washington, and I hope it always stands against that.

I am born raised in the Richmond, Virginia area. I love Virginia. I can go east and see the ocean, I can go west and see the mountains. I can go North and see the historical sites of D.C. then there is Williamsburg. Lots of stuff.
This song was written by a 24 yr old James Bland in 1878, a black minstrel star. He wrote about 700 songs, one of them being this one which was adopted by the state as the state song in 1940. It sounds like it's no longer the state song? Anyway, my source for your 'beloved' song comes from Eileen Southern's The Music of Black Americans. p238

What I don't understand is why this song needed to be retired. Couldn't someone have just rewritten the words to make them less racist and offensive?
it's because the word, "Darkey' refers to a black person. I'm black and I think this song is lovely.

That's debatable. West Virginia was formed when its counties decided they disagreed with Richmond's decision to secede and join the Confederate States. They seceded themselves and asked to stay within the US as a separate state, a request Washington granted. That was their decision, though I'm curious as to why that was legal and secession is otherwise condemned by Unionists.

I agree but overall Virgina has some of the finest colleges overall in the country. JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA, VIRGINIA TECH, WILLIAM AND MARY, VCU, GEORGE MASON, ODU, and several more.

Something I cannot understand, however, is this- a version of "Carry Me Back To Old Virginia", one totally devoid of even potentially racist lyrics, was proposed and rejected in state legislature. Virginia has since been making efforts to find a new state song, efforts that are going nowhere. I've reviewed the current candidates, and I can say that Virginia doesn't need a new song. The one we already have is perfect, yet for some reason political correctness struck and had it removed.

Absolutely, but the Ivy League schools are better than just about everybody, and they know it, too. VMI and The Citadel are also known for their immense faith in their own way of doing things, but they're different from places like Harvard.

@496gonfishin sorry but its already happened to Virginia . I was raised in Northern Virginia and it was already getting bad when I was growing up (born in '79). So its a mess. But there are some nice areas such as Richmond, Charlottesville, Williamsburg, Danville, Shenandoah Valley, etc. I dont mind yankees at all! Just dont like it when they tell us we're all backwards and wrong.

was it all kind of crap over the past issues with the war between the states? I am getting so sick of that crap. Confederate history is a part of american history yet people want to shun it. Redesign state flags without citizens ok and the like.
