    Written by Julia S. Tutwiler
    Composed by Edna Gockel Gussen
Alabama, Alabama, We will aye be true to thee,
From thy Southern shores where groweth,
By the sea thy orange tree.
To thy Northern vale where floweth,
    Deep blue the Tennessee,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!
    Broad thy stream whose name thou bearest;
    Grand thy Bigbee rolls along;
    Fair thy Coosa-Tallapoosa
Bold thy Warrior, dark and strong,
Goodlier than the land that Moses
Climbed lone Nebo's Mount to see,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!
From thy prairies broad and fertile,
    Where thy snow-white cotton shines,
To the hills where coal and iron
    Hide in thy exausted mines,
    Strong -armed miners -sturdy farmers;
    Loyal hearts what'er we be,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!
From thy quarries where the marble
White as that of Paros gleams
    Waiting till thy sculptor'ss chisel,
    Wake to life thy poet's dreams;
Fear not only wealth of nature,
Wealth of mind has no fee,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!
    Where the perfumed south-wind whispers,
    Thy magnolia groves among,
    Softer than a mother's kisses,
    Sweeter than a mother's song,
    Where the golden jasmine trailing,
    Woos the treasure-laden bee,
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!
Brave and pure thy men and women,
Better this than corn and wine
Make us worthy, God in Heaven
Of this goodly land of Thine.
Hearts as open as thy doorways.
    Liberal hands and spirits free.
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!
Little, little can I give thee,
    Alabama, mother mine.
But that little - hand, brain, spirit.
All I have and am are thine.
Take, O take, the gift and giver.
Take and serve thyself with me.
Alabama, Alabama, we will aye be true to thee!

a lot of us here in Bama consider it just that...
never mind that most of Lynyrd Skynyrd's original members were all from Jacksonville, Florida.
there's a lot of love for Bama in their song,
and a lot of us here love LS for making it so sweet. :)

you mean "totally misinterpret the song," yeah?
nothing's bigoted about Julia Tutwiler's lyrics.
they are as pure, sweet, and noble as anything I've ever heard.
they celebrate all the good things about this state.
and don't hate on anything at all.
Ms. Tutwiler had an abiding love for her state and her people.
she also was the president of Alabama Normal College for Girls in the late 1800s.
it happens to be my alma mater (now Univ. of West Alabama).
I do know a thing or two about her. :P

there are three US state flags I really like: New Mexico, Alabama, and Texas.
New Mexico has a lovely golden zia on a red background,
Texas is more or less using a big-state-size version of the national flag.,
and then there is Alabama, with the simplest -- but maybe the most striking -- of all US flags.

@AlabamaSoldier It's modeled after many flags that bear St. Anthony's Cross. By the way, mainly a Scottish design/battle standard to my understanding.

I believe Alabama has been using this 1895. Bourgogne on the other hand switches flags every 20 minutes. Anyway they may have used the Cross of St. Andrew, but neither one came up with the concept. Its such a simple design that there is no telling who originally used it for a flag or any other logo.

@AlabamaSoldier your the first one i meet that understands its a confederate flag and is likened to the naval jack( now known as confederate flag) although it wasnt the original confederate flag i give you a A for researching the matter and finding the true meaning

@NewHeathen78 St. Anthony's cross is a T-shaped cross and is also known as the Tau Cross.
St. Andrews cross is an X-shaped cross after which is modeled the state flag of Alabama. The charter for the flag SPECIFICALLY calls for a "crimson Cross of St. Andrews."
    Google is your friend.

Actually, if you dissect the song, Sweet Home Alabama is about how backwards Alabama is. It doesn't praise the state or its people; it basically calls them two-faced bigots.
So glad this is the state anthem.

Maybe but it is the Cross of St Patrick and represented the Kingdom of Ireland and is incorporated into the Union Flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

@Indestructible229 It's ok. People usually look at Alabama in a negative way. & Alabama wasn't the only racist state back then. There was South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky, even parts of New England & Midwest were pretty bad. But that's the past. & Alabama is a very fine state with the positive things it has. So does all the other states in the U.S. Just look at the postcards! Well, thanks for understanding us! :D

my own family would be more Scots-English, but that's not too much different.
technically, Alabama's flag is a "crimson cross of St. Andrew", but it certainly is an almost-exact copy of St. Patrick's saltire.

@CrayfishYAY haha well sorry about what I said. It's just that most of us Northerners think that Southerners live in trailer parks, love country music, drive trucks, are racists, and hate Northerners.

@Indestructible229 Um, excuse me? I wouldn't be talking if I were you! California & New York are the only 2 states in the nation that legalize gay marrige. + California hosts an Atheist convention & gives out pot like candy. & with the KKK, that's now in Texas, not Alabama. & not all of Alabama is poor. You should go to Vestavia Hills & Orange Beach. That's where most of the rich people are. Well, those are the only cities I know that have rich people.

@CrayfishYAY Um, there's nothing wrong with gay marriage? And who cares, people can believe what they want? And so, I'd rather everyone smoke weed than be racist and violent.
