I'm always so impressed with your tutorials, and this one is no exception. I loved how you explained the way to remember which way to insert the needle, as well as why you need to twist the stitch. I'll never have to look up M1R or M1L again!
Thanks Norman, the mnemonic I use is to Make 1 Right pick up from the Rear. I am dyslexic and I have difficulty discerning the lean of the fibre. Eventually I abbreviated the reminder to Right Rear. It works for me. 🙃. Love the demonstration. Thank you very much.
Your tutorials are simplified for both returners and beginner knitters. After a few failed garments, hey presto, with your help I have just completed a gorgeous cardigan for my granddaughter. I am now starting on Christmas socks for friends ( yes I know Christmas is a while away)🤣. But after watching your tutorial for beginners socks, I can’t put my needles down. You are simply the best on RUclips. Keep them coming🥰
Thank you so much Sonja. And very happy to hear you were able to finish your gift. Comments like these really give me so much energy because that's what it's all about. Sharing this amazing hobby with the world
I have been knitting for 10 years now. After a break I needed a refresher of some of the terms on a shawl pattern. I have watched many tutorials over the years for different crafts. This was by far the best explanation of a technique I have ever seen. Thank you Norman for your gift of teaching.
Thank you so much for this video! It is so clear and easy to follow. Your tips to help remember which way to pick up the yarn and knit it for M1L and M1R are fabulous!
just discovered you and I am binge watching your episodes. Your explanations are so clear and well thought out. Even though I have been knitting for many years I love learning how others techniques and tips. Your website is lovely also. I'm sorry that your travel blog was put on hold for a bit but I am so glad you decided to share your knitting skills and knowledge.
You have the best, most understandable video tutorials for Knitters. Your camera position is perfect for demostrating exactly what you are doing. You are the unrivaled teacher for us newbies. ❤
I have crocheted for years and I love needle tatting. I have always want to knit my daughter and I took a class which was a waste of time and money to learn absolutely nothing. We have learned more in a few days of watching your videos then we ever dreamed of accomplishing. I can't thank you enough
I love your videos!!! You are the first place I go to learn something new, or refresh my memory. You are so encouraging in all things! Thank you for your time, effort and patience.
Ach, dieses Video hab ich gestern abend nicht kommentiert. Super, vielen Dank. Über Nacht hab ich anscheinend beides im Schlaf geübt, heute hab ich beides problemlos stricken können. Vielen Dank, Norman.
I've watched a few videos with their own mnemonics, but this is the best video on M1R & M1L and how to memorize them!! Thanks so much! Love all of your videos!
I just found your channel today and am watching through the different playlists. Thank you for all these detailed tutorials. Your instructions are very clear.
this was so helpful, especially the part with the little diamond shaped swatch explaining about the ridge! the pattern i'm working on calls for an increase at the sides of my work instead of in the middle like something raglan shaped so i got quite confused about which one had to go where😄
I want to thank you for posting this video. I had struggled with this increase for a long time. So helpful and clear. You have a big fan in Tillamook Oregon.
Hi thank you for all the valuable work you do here on youtube!!! im a beginner and one thing about this video: i was searching for" how to increase in knitting, and this video here took me some seaching, so maybe include the word "increase" (achso und liebe grüße von einer deutschen die auf englisch stricken lernt haha)
Hi I’m sure you did a tutorial on how to get the holes that are formed either side of a raglan strip looking the same. When I do my M1L etc the holes on either side are not uniform. I’m sure you showed us a technique to combat this but I can’t find it!
No, i have no tutorial on raglan increases. However, I DO have a library of knitting stitches with plenty of increase alternatives: nimble-needles.com/knitting-techniques-library/
@Norman My pattern requires K1 M1L, knit across, M1R, K1. Then again on the purl row, which is where I am getting confused. Can you help me with this so the sts on both side lean correctly. My M1PR into the M1L St on the row below gets messed up. There's something I am not doing correctly. Thank you for your help. Does M1PR lean L on the K side?
@@NimbleNeedles Thanks so much! I'm learning to make my own top down yoke sweater without relying on a pattern. Planning to do a basic striped pattern.
well, my channel here is focused on plain continental knitting but M1R and M1L can typically be used as they are. But it will depend a bit on the circumstances.
I'm sorry but I still don't have the full picture. Lets say my pattern increase says "M1" at the end of the row on the right side, and "M1" on beginning of the row on the wrong side, do I do a M1L, flip and then a M1R? Or do I stick with one?
hm..that would be a kind of strange pattern. You cannot knit a m1l at the end of the row. and even if you could, stacking these increases without a row in between is a bad idea.
@@NimbleNeedles oh I see. Does that mean most patterns only make an increase on either the right or wrong side, and not both? The pattern I'm working on is for a hooded scarf and it says: RS: K34, M1, K1 WS: K1, M1, K to the end Repeat until you reach 55 stitches. The whole project is garter stitch. Is this sort of increase unusual? My frustration has been I don't know whether do to M1R or M1L. And its not clear to me whether M1R or L is talking about the result of the whole edge sloping upward right or left, or if it is referring to a stitch position and direction similar to how you see a bar for purl and a V for knit.
I hope you enjoyed this video! Make sure to comment with any questions and problems you may have had knitting these two increases!

Vielen Dank für dieses Tutorial - vielleicht kann ich mir endlich merken, welche Zunahme wie herum gestrickt wird!

hi! love this video. was wondering what we should do if wanting to increase whilst doing the purled side of a garment
there are tons of options but you could start here: nimble-needles.com/stitches/how-to-knit-m1pl-make-one-purl-left/
Now I know what I was doing incorrectly! Thank you!
Thank you sir u help me
thumbs up👍

What's the best increase method to create a seamless top down yoke sweater?
There's no single best method. Entirely depends on your preference 🤷♂️
