- Many of you have asked me what guitars are best for beginners that will be of good quality yet won't make you go broke...
I'm here at Replay Guitar Exchange in Tampa, FL with my buddy Cliff to see if we can find 5 guitars that are less than $500, and that will work for metal!
**Be sure to check out Replay Guitar Exchange here:
www.replayguitar.com/
I walked around the store and, of course, there are many guitars in the price but remember, the challenge was to find guitars that would be good for metal, or at least hard rock.
So Cliff led the way and we found some guitar I believe will work for beginners up to intermediate guitar players.
Hopefully this video gives you an idea of what you can get if you're on a budget and just looking for a quality beginner to intermediate guitar.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
And please give this video a thumbs up and share it!
Keep it Metal,
Jason

We really are in a golden era of good guitars for not a lot of money....this was impossible when I was first getting into guitar many moons ago.
I remember those days...decent guitars were super pricy!
Yup, I agree. Guitars on a ridiculously low budget are all around. My recently bought Harley Benton TE-20 MN no exception.
But not everything is now more affordable: Got me a brand new Squier Strat which was made in Mexico (!) back in the late eighties for just below 400 Deutsche Mark. Fender is now asking € 649 for an entry-level MiM Stratocaster over here (with a usable floating 2-point trem and state-of-the-art branding, I admit), the equivalent of 1,270 DM.
Nice presentation, Jason 👍🤘💪 Great music store, too. With the downside of being way out of reach 😉
1 year later and wood prices have driven guitars prices up like crazy. The esp I got in 2020 has gone up by 20%.
It’s pretty amazing what’s available now at a very affordable price. Some my disagree, but Jackson makes some fantastic guitars that won’t break the bank (JS series) and still gives you all the bells and whistles of the pricier models. A buddy of mine swapped out the pickups for some Seymour Duncans on the same model and it sounds incredible. Total cost for the guitar and pickup swap was actually under $500 🤘. Thanks for doing these videos! These are really informative.
Cheap labor does wonders I hear.
I highly enjoyed this video the fact that you just had the guitars playing right from the amp is appreciated. Pure raw true sound of what a guitar can do always gets an automatic like from. You got a new subscriber !
Thank you, I appreciate that!
I bought one of the Schecter C1 Platinum a few years ago when I got back into guitar after a 10+ year break. It is killer guitar for that money, I love it.
Yeah I really enjoyed playing that one!
Schecter c1 platinum , omen diamonds and Damian, absolute beasts for the price!!! Criminally underrated!! Ibanez gio, wao👊🏻🔥🔥🔥💥💥
I Loved this video. Very helpful and so badass. Thank you! subbed.
Thanks for the sub!
I just got a schecter demon with a Floyd rose on it ($499 new) a few months ago and I absolutely love it! Stays in tune perfectly and sounds incredible 🤘🏼
🤘🤘🤘
Wow, very nice playing! This proves that it's more about the fingers than the guitar. Each guitar sounded different - but they all sounded good, and I can't really say which one I liked best... because they all sounded awesome - thanks to your fingers and the amp probably more than anything.
That's definitely a valid point! You'll notice dudes like Slash, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson and many others...they could play through any guitar, or amp for that matter, and you'd still know it's them because they have developed their own signature sound and style. And that should be our ultimate goal!
Thanks for the helpful video!
I never leave feedback on the guitars videos but you nailed it man. Great video and info
🙏 🤘
Awesome video as usual Brother!🤘🏼
Thank you, had a lot of fun doing this one!
Nice review. Keep it coming! Thanks man. Stay Metal!!!🤘🤘🤘
Matthew Bereckis thanks dude 🤘🙏🏻
Jason Stallworth seriously.... Many would love to see $750 price point and even $1k and below..... Then there's AMPLIFIERS.... Maybe strictly new.... 😎😎😎
@@ironsave3201 Videos like that are definitely coming soon! I've been working closely with Replay Guitar Exchange, Tampa's local music shop for this.
Wow amazing lead tones from that Katana. Great video
You explain things well enough for a drummer to understand. Subscribed!
Dude, thank you and thanks for the sub!
@@jasonstallworth 2 drummers*
nice video!!! lovin the Schecter !!! wish we had cheap gear up here in Canada like this !!!!
Yeah it's a solid one...my advice is to find one pre-owned if possible.
The Ibanez Gio series always was a great recommendation for low budget guitars. Nowadays there are certainly more options. The time where you cut your hands on the frets of cheap guitars are over. As a leftie I appreciate that Ibanez offers left handed guitars in that price range. Mine got new pickups (Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz) and I did block the floating tremolo with a piece of wood - gives more contact to body and therefore more sustain. It makes it hold its tuning much better - particularly when quickly tuning to drop-D and back to E standard. Tuning stability is one point where cheaper models differ from higher priced ones.
Yeah those GIOs are solid for starting out!
What was the model of Gio he was playing?... please tell...Because Gio is only available in India..Please help this bro...🙏🙏🇮🇳🇮🇳

Great video info
Thank you, brother! I've gotta get us a live session soon!
Great video! Just picked up a Jackson Randy Roades with a Floyd Rose for 200$. Been a drummer for years and using your videos to learn some metal guitar. Thanks
Dude, now that's a deal!!!
Hey man, I use an old Charvel I bought from my friend. I got the bridge pickup replaced with a Kent Armstrong pickup after buying it. Even though I bought it for a cheap price and it's rather beat up, the tone gets BRUTAL and it works great! Some intonation problems but I work with it. Just to show you don't necessarily need something crazy expensive.
Yeah, you can sometimes get a phenimal guitar for a really good price. And you can always fixed them up a bit, set them up, or put better pickups in them.
Oh, and dude, I also have a new metal rhythm guitar course out now that you might be interested in here: metalmastermind.com/metal-riff-master/
i have a blue ibanez gio like the one you played in this video that i got from a trade and it's been a HUGE help! i love ibanez in general so yeah XD
The GIOs are great!
I own a $200 LTD F10, swapped the bridge pickup for $90 SD. It sounds amazing.
That's the way to do it!
I used to have an Ibanez GIO and LOVED IT!!!!!! They had decent pickups and good grind.
It's a great guitar for the price, even the new ones. I've always prefered the RG style necks, too
I have a gio grg121dx and all I did was upgraded the pickups and new string=s and gave it new life
@@rgat5150 No matter what guitar i play..... I airways miss that Ibanez neck.
I have cheap Jackson.I like the thin satin finished neck. There are many aspects that make one guitar good for given music style.
But I like how the Epiphone sounds in your test!
🤘
Man your an awesome guitar player!!! My favorite guitars were the Ibanez GIO and the Jackson Flying V.
Yeah both of those are really awesome guitars!! And thank you!
Also, if you don't have my free practice guide with video and tabs, grab it here: www.jasonstallworth.com/guitarist/
Whats up Jason,,,Tim from Pittsburgh here,,thanks for the great video. Again
Very cool video Jason I have 2 ibanez Gio guitars I bought at a Pawn shop it works great
Those GIOs are great!
I have had my squire for manyyyy years and took a break from playing for a while during college and until I found a job, but now I'm thinking about getting one of these and continuing my playing... I miss playing it lol
Dude, definitely get one and start playing again!!
That Ibanez GUO was so beautiful!!
Really caught my eye.
It's a nice one!
I just got an Omen Elite-6 hardtail as my first electric ($500 new). Compared to the regular Omen-6, has upgraded pickups and nut, a five-way switch with different single coil options, and different aesthetics. That's honestly my main reason for upgrading since I think they look really nice. They have transparent pickups with the coils visible and I really liked the blue. Though there's also the Damien Elite-6 for the same price that has matte black and bat inlays that also looks really cool.
Another nice thing about the Schecters is they have lefty versions and also 7-string versions (only $50 more).
I need to play some Schecters...haven't played that many
@@jasonstallworth I have a Silver Mountain in blood moon with a sustainiac and a Floyd. It's definitely a higher priced guitar at about 1500 but, dude they are speced out to the hilt. Ebony board, stainlesssteal frets, Grover tuners, graphtech nut and a really awesomepaint scheme. I love mine!!
Yeah man Schecter makes great guitars in every tier. So does ESP/LTD
GIO was my first guitar and it's still pretty much my go to when I practice each day.
Can't go wrong with Ibanez!
Mine too, with a Paul Gilbert instructional dvd
Still playing my Epiphone SG after 20+ years 😎
Dude, that guitar played great and had a distinct tone!
Glad you discovered the metal power of the SG!
I enjoyed playing that one!
@@jasonstallworth I had a custom SG I played for years and years, someone had put hot rails in the neck position and a massive humbucker in the bridge position. It was dynamite.
Just bought a Schecter C-1 platinum. Was going to buy an Omen Extreme6 but platinum went on sale for $50 more. Awesome guitar. Still will probably get the omen though. I never really thought about Schecter much before. I've been missing out.
Yeah, it all comes down to the neck for many. Some like the thicker necks while others like thin ones. But the Schecters are great for metal.
Dude! The fIRST EVER metal guitar was an SG! Its been Tony IOMMI's Guitar of choice his whole career. I got luck and Saw Sabbath on their first tour in 1971 ( I was 15) Even Crazier the SG he had atr the time didn't even have humbuckers! it was loaded with P90's both Black sabbath's first 2 albums were recorded with that guitar.
Just a little history for you youngsters.
Awesome history here, dude! Yeah, that SG played really nice!
With stock strings on all I assume. No better time to get into playing an instrument than now! We are very lucky nowadays.
Yeah I'm sure the strings were stock. Definitely a great time to get into it!
I love the Boss Kateña amp. Super solid
🤘
The input jack on Jackson V's is on the upper wing on newer Jacksons.....
I believe both the Ibanez and Jackson will get me to different levels of my playing not just beginner and intermediate levels.
Those guitars will definitely stay with you through all levels!
bought a jackson v from india a few months ago and I couldn’t agree more with you when it comes to upgrading the pick ups. other than that it’s killer got it for $100 Canadian
Man that’s an awesome deal!
gotta get them better dills. LOL great as always man!
🙏🏻🤘
It's crazy how things have changed been playing since 92 and you'd be hard pressed to find a good guitar for under 500 back then. I think it's awesome so the upcoming generation will hopefully take up playing.
🤘
Though I was born in 2003 my parents aren’t willing to drop 700 800 bucks on a guitar so I got a ibanez mikro series RG and I put .012 to .056 Ernie balls and drop tuned it to drop B and I can do drop A but I don’t bc the strings are super floppy
Nice video Jason!
I have a Schecter Hellraiser... It's 4.6kg.. Too heavy..
But I really love it. Has EMG81TW and EMG 89.
I've yet to play a Hellraiser but have heard they are amazing guitars! And cool name...love the Hellraiser movies!
@@jasonstallworth what amp are you using here?
Dude! You freakin shred!
🙏 🤘
For looks alone, the Jackson has that metal vibe to it. You can't beat a Schecter tho, pure muscle. And what can you say about Ibanez, tried and true. That Epi SG tho, wow, pretty dam solid babaay yauh.
Yeah I enjoyed playing all of these guitars! But I've always liked the look of Jacksons more!
Schecters are just brutal man.
Thanks for your recommendations, Jason. Nice report, nice people all over the place 😀
My only complaint is that watching your video had an immediate impact on my bank account balance. I just couldn't resist to buy my first Schecter the same evening.
Following your advice, I chose a used one, a C-1 FR (Diamond Series) in white, with an awesome binding and hardware all in black, dot-only fretboard inlays 😢, but as the name suggests with the Floyd Rose trem ... and active »Duncan Designed« pickups! I expect it to arrive this week yet.
I promise to start doing all of your riffing exercises right after unboxing the C-1 🤞🤘
Lol, yeah my channel might cost you a little money at times!! Those C-1 FR’s are awesome!
And dude, I don’t know if you’re already in my online course but if not, you can check that out here: metalmastermind.com/metal-riff-master/
@@jasonstallworth Just gotta let you know that my C-1 FR has arrived yesterday. Man, what a beauty-AND-beast it is 🤘 A slight release to the neck, a new set of .009s, FR adjustment along with intonation setup and voilà: I'm a proud owner of a state-of-the-art Metal axe. Never considered buying a Schecter before, but you got me on the right track, Jason-san. Seduction »highestly« appreciated 😁👍 Cheers!
I got a friend who ordered an Ibanez GIO online. It wasn't properly grounded so it kept making loud buzzing sounds when plugged into the amp. At first, the website he ordered from acted like his amp is the problem, but I helped him to get it replaced. When buying a guitar, go to the shop when possible, or check if the website services the guitar before shipping.
Awsome video jason.i think at the end of the day u paying for what u get.if someone's gonna go cheap on electric guitars then I would suggest changing the pickups bcos that's where the real deal comes in.for metal I would recommend (Seymour Duncan black winter pickups)or EMG.both are great pickups for metal.and last but not least the boss M-T2 metalzone distortion pedal.then you good to go.🤘🏻
Yeah changing pickups on a cheaper guitar is a good way to do it!
The Schecter Omen Elite is just under $500. Awesome pickups, neck, build and looks great too
That’s a solid guitar!
Yes I only have 2 guitars but the Omen Elite in the blue is one of them . I couldn’t find a better guitar for my taste under 500 . It plays great the neck is fast . The pickups are a good deal better than the Ibanez or Jackson pickups put in their sub 500 models . It stays in tune and looks awesome front and back !
When I was a teen I used to dream of a Jackson soloist. I remember them being craaaazy expensive and I finally just ordered my first for under 1000$. Crazy times lol
Always wanted a Soloist and yeah, I remember them being a bit unattainable for me in my younger years!
Cant go wrong with the C 1 platinum...have one since they first came out and the EMG 81 and EMG 85s are incredible...the only Schecter I have that imo better is my Hellraiser V...good video...
I've yet to play the Hellraiser and dying to play one!
I have 2 shecters, C1 plus and and an omen Avenged sevenfold. I think the Gio is better. I bought it for my son. Better pick ups, better fret work, better neck, it also has that 2 point bridge for dive bombs.
You rock!!
I WAS NOT READY FOR THAT SHREDDERY
Also I have an epiphone sg with a different finish but everything else is the same and I’m really happy with it
🤘
That was a really nice guitar!
Lmao I had the video set to 1.5x speed and didn’t realize it when speaking, so when you started shredding I was like Goddamn!!
🤣🤘
amazing
Thank you. Also, be sure to get my free practice guide that I give to all my subs here: www.jasonstallworth.com/guitarist/
What is your favourite beer Jason? Love your video’s BTW.
It really depends on my mood, but I typically go for local IPAs
Hey man, whats that riff your playing with the second guitar? sounds awesome
It's more than likely something I made up at the moment, or one of my own songs. BTW, here's the latest on my tones: ruclips.net/video/0makwiJmmGY/видео.html
Were the amp settings exactly the same for each guitar? Because if so, I'm surprising myself by thinking I liked the Epiphone the best
Yes, I literally set the Orange Rockerverb up dialing in my usual tone and just played each guitar with the same settings. And like you, I was really surprised how the Epiphone sounded
@@jasonstallworth Thanks for the review, this'll help me while I'm shopping for a replacement guitar.
I too enjoy the deep growl my Epiphone special II GT lets out. Even more so compared to my LTD MH line super strat!
@@KillaCityKid427 🤘
Yes the epiohone sounded amazing
Hey Jason. Not sure if you’ll read this but what are your thoughts on the Jackson DK2X HT for a beginner guitar? I want something inexpensive to learn on and figured this guitar fit the bill. Not sure if it’s better to learn on a guitar with a fixed bridge but didn’t want to have to worry much about keeping it in tune. I looked at the ESP Ltd MH1000 but those are out of my price range
I think any Jackson is great and the Ibanez Gio are also great for beginners
The fact that the second guitar (Schecter) was 200 bucks and now it's 430 it's craaaazy
Yeah that's nuts but you can find some decent deals on preowned gear (this shop I'm at has a lot of that - link in description, as well as Sweetwater's preowned section, and Reverb)
@@jasonstallworth i had the chance to buy a schecter omen extreme 6 second hand for 400 bucks, but i ended up buying a new one on thomann for 611, i jus cant trust the second hand market
I actually love the Ibanez Geo.. Have a 7 string and 6 string. Well worth the money..
Yeah I thought the GIO was a great beginner's guitar, and you could ramp it up to an intermediate guitar by changing out the pickups
@@jasonstallworth Thats what im thinking about doing on my 7 string.. I personally like the feel of it more than my strat, and i been playing a strat since 89. Dream guitar is a Steve Via Jem7. Played one at local guitar shop and was blown away. But would have to sell a kidney to afford one.
This guy showed me with the first guitar, you DONT NEED an expensive guitar to play fast awesomess
That's true! You can find some great deals on pre-owned guitars as well from this place (link to their shop is in the description)
Ooooooooooohhh shhhhIIIITTTT!!!!!!!;
That Lil sg was YEEEAH SGs are my go to but that riff n lead you played HOLY SMOKES bro WTF you could shred with me anyday you play like a seasoned warrior from hell! Loved it! All great guitars 4 outta 5 were picks I woulda made!
Oh yeah. You pulled me in. SUBBED 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽💪🏼
Yeah dude, that SG surprised the crap out of me too!! Didn't expect it!
Thank you for the sub!
Came for the guitar. Stayed for the arms.
🤘
My Jackson is insane value for money. I payed $400aud second hand. It's an absolute shred beast.
If you are good with the fixed bridge you are set.
Those are nice guitars
wow dude I didn`t realize before you`re so huge!
lol
Lol I was thinking same thing when he was standing next to that guy!🤘 lol.
That Ibanez sounds better than the guitars in the 750 -1000 vid
It played really nice! The Ibanez necks are awesome
Awesome shredding-Which sg is this? Standard? Thnx
Thank you. I honestly don't recall
Jet guitars are killing ot too for good prices man
🤘
Boy do I like that C-1
It's a beast!
Hey.. could you help me out with something? So you see Im actually thinking of getting a les paul special ve guitar, its the black one and idk which amp to get, the vox pathfinder 10 or the vox cambridge.. i need to know which one is best for metal playing and if the guitar is good for it too.
I don't think that you'll be satisfied with Vox for metal. If you're looking for a practice for metal, check out this video I made: ruclips.net/video/6VqR2T6OzUA/видео.html
You know, there was little band called Black Sabbath with guy called Tony Iommi and he always played a SG and still does. They played Heavy Metal in the early days and still do. So maybe an SG is good for Metal.
I like it but there are folks that don't care for it for the newer sub-genres of metal. I personally think it holds up for any of up...it's more the guitarist than it is the guitar!
Nice
🤘
I have a jackson dinky 7 string and its an awesome guitar it is 200 dollars at guitar center and its well worth it
You can’t go wrong with those guitars!
Damn man! I want to be you when I grow up! How did you get those sounds out of the schekter?
This was a while back and barely remember what guitars I played!
That Schecter Diamond Series Omen 6 sounds amazing might be my first guitar not sure what are good cheap pick ups for it tho
🤘
I just got an Omen Elite-6 new for $500 as my first electric. Has some upgraded pickups and nut compared to the normal Omen-6 and also a 5-way switch. I have to say part of the reason was the look, though. I got the blue one which looks really cool, IMO. There's also a slightly different model in matte black one with bat inlays that I was tempted by.
I love buying $300-$500 guitars and changing out pots and pickups and strings. Gives you a sense of connection to the instrument. I’ve played for over 10 years and consider myself a seasoned player above intermediate.
That’s a great way to create a really nice guitar!
in terms of sound what did you feel it was better? the ibanez or the schecter?
This video was so long ago I don’t quite recall but I’m the Ibanez thing necks are preferred guitars
That place looks way better than my local guitar center. After the shut down they have hardly anything.
Manic Murph yeah dude I really hate so many businesses suffered through this crap. I hope folks like your local music store can push their way back up somehow
@@jasonstallworth the guitar center by me has really been going downhill the last few years. None of the older guys who know their stuff work there anymore and it's a bunch of young hipsters that work there. It looked like they were going out of business when I walked in there. You'd think because it's guitar center they'd have a bunch of inventory and product but they don't yet.
Jackson demo = favourite part.
They're great guitars
Dude nice playing! Any lessons ??
Thank you. I actually just released a metal rhythm guitar course called Metal Riff Master! You can check that out here: metalmastermind.com/metal-riff-master/
That GIO...🤘🏻👍🏻
Yeah, the GIO is a really nice guitar...I did not expect it to play and sound as good as it did being at such a low price!
Howdy!
Would you recommend buying a cheaper guitar and some seymor duncan pickups or is the money better spent on a higher priced guitar? Since i dont really switch the pickups at all, one of the better pickups would be enough, right?
That's definitely not a bad idea to save a little
I have a cheap Silvertone strat and I'm putting on EMG 81 humbucker with the 1 humbucker Delonge style pickguard to become a Thrash Metal beast and I might end up getting it repainted with in green with black tribal graphics at a graphics shop in the mall.
@@Wheresthepepsibismol Nice!!
You don't necessarily need to stand with that Jackson! Just a right angle cable, and you barely notice it!
Lol...I was having a tough time with it!
Do you have a recommendation for a V Shape Guitar under 400 that sound good
The best bet is to search for used gear online (there's a link to this shop in the description and they always have new preowned gear coming in)
Can't help but notice the size difference here, are you 7 feet tall Jason! Can I ask how tall you are?
Lol, no I'm about 5'10" ...I think the video angle makes me look larger than what I am
I own the same amp and an Epiphone. What were the amp settings that you used on the Katana?
I wish I could remember! But my settings aren't anything crazy
I have the GIO ibanez it sounds good.. Thin neck easy to shred.. But electronics are not good compare to other brands
Omen 6 got upgrades into omen extreme 6 with good quality electronic etc
What about the schecter demon 6 ?how does it compare with esp Ltd EC 256 & C1 platinum?
Ruskin Ck Yeah the GIOs are resent guitars. As far as the others, they all have their own set of pros and cons. It really comes down to what feels and sounds right for the individual
I have a Jackson just like that one and yes it sucks where the input is placed. I preferer my epi Les Paul prophecy.
🤘
For a minute I thought you were gonna play cliffs of dover! 1:16
I have one for ya. The Dean, Dave Mustaine VMNTX -- $329
That would be cool to play!
Holy shit - hands of god! How do I get you to riff on one of my songs?
If you’re serious about that, I do hired studio work and record for other artists at times. Just go to my about page on Jason Stallworth.com to contact me
@@jasonstallworth very serious mate - I’ll be in touch!
Thats one thing i like about schecter, they dont skimp out on the goodies...quality woods, quality hardware, top notch pick ups, especially on mid range instruments Compared to ibanez they just just put cheap ass everything on their cheaper models, they just dont seem to carenow make some videos for advanced players, you cant stay stuck on beginners....
The Faceless I learned this today about Schecter guitars! I haven’t really played them before until now and was impressed with both! You can tell that they’re just built nicely!
Besides hi-gain pickups and aethetics, what qualifies a guitar as "good for metal?"
Pretty much what you just mentioned. In reality, you can pull metal off with most any guitar. But there preferred elements are the pickups and aesthetics.
I know that it's been more than a year aleardy but...the lead parts you played repeated a couple of times and I wanted to know what song do they belong to because I'd love to learn them! :)
Dude, I was just making stuff up on the spot for this series!
didn’t know my ibanez was gonna be the first guitar on here hahaha, i love mine, cheap here in aus and it play amazingly
Yeah, those are solid guitars!
Anyone know the exact model of the gio? I can't find one online that's just string through.
🙏🤘
Yo brother your Tampa me too
🤘
@jasonstallworth respect brother you look similar to myself, an ex bber in his 40s who grew up with metal and rock in the 80s.... recently sold my 1986 kraner baretta :( and oozing now to replace ot with one of the current trends equivalent but its a minefield. So many makes and model numbers . No idea where to start bro ........ any advice appreciated 🙏. Price really under $1500
Oh man, there are so many option in that price range. If it were me, I'd get an Ibanez Prestige RG or maybe a Charvel
For me its hard between the epiphone sg, jackson and the ibanez
Yeah, they all give you different things...it'd be cool to have all 3 hanging on your wall!
Which of them is good for metalcore/melodic metalcore?
Any of them will work for that…when you get down to sub genres it’s more about the style of your playing that it is the guitar
