    Every time Tony releases a video about the Z6/7, we get the obligatory clip from the Z6 release, where Tony's brain was broken WRT Nikon cameras. Have you seen any of the 'breaking news' videos from Tony about any other camera brand, where there are clips from 5 years ago? And the history lesson every time mentions the problems with focusing and white balance? I understand that Tony was very disappointed with the Z6/7, but it feels a bit odd to keep harping on something that happened 5 years ago. Give it a rest already, Tony.

    What would make me buy the new Z6 III over the Zf? Seems like the MPs are the same and the Zf has the same processing chip as the Z8 with a similar autofocusing system. I am a studio portrait photographer and have been holding out with my D750 but I want to upgrade for the eye recognition and the low light capability of the mirrorless cameras. I have been shooting Nikon since I got my N2000 so I have a fair bit of glass. I am not convinced that I need to keep upping my MPs for prints. Any input to help direct me to the best camera for my needs?

  • @RandumbTech
    @RandumbTech 4 месяца назад +9

    I'm diggin' what Nikon is doing these days. The biggest advantage they have is something they don't even talk about - it's a universal mount. It has the shortest flange distance of any mirrorless camera and the mount is massive so it can accommodate any lens. I bought the Zf because I can easily adapt all of my e-mount lenses and still get decent AF with a full manual shooting experience. It's awesome!!

  • @fleemwings207
    @fleemwings207 4 месяца назад +4

    I still shoot on the D750 and am not too into video - an upgraded Z5 would probably encourage me to move to mirrorless. I think the Z6 III will cost more than $2,000 and that is more than what I'd like to spend. I started shooting with digital cameras in 2000 and I know that the consumer electronics can fail suddenly at any time. I prefer to spend money on glass as they don't go obsolete so quickly!

    • @tomirwinphoto

    CFB is actually not twice the speed of CFA, check NikonRumors, they benchmarked the Z8 and it achieves between 600 and 750MB/s writing speed depending on the card. So, you get the full speed only when copying the files from the CFB reader to your PC and that's it. In the camera itself, no performance advantage at all.

  • @HR-wd6cw

    I think you're probably right on a lot of points... it may do, for example, the 120 fps but it will be cropped JPEGs. The one "rumor" I am curious about though is people talking about 6k video. From my understanding 6k resolution is typical 6144x3456 which is wider than the current 24.5MP sensor by about 100 pixels. This makes me wonder if they are going to do a 26MP sensor or a 30-33 MP sensor perhaps, or if the 6k rumor is not true and it will remain only 4k but perhaps be able to do something like 4k120. I mean 24.5MP is enough pixels for 6k (about 21MP is needed) but the dimensions would be the problem unless it had say a 30 MP sensor.. So in some respects, if we take the typical 6k resolution, a 24MP sensor wouldn't work as it is currently (which has a resolution of 6048x4048 which gives you the typical 3:2 aspect ratio which pretty much every camera has as its native aspect ratio). On the other hand, if 6144 pixels wide is the total pixels, but screens only display say 6000 pixels wide and not the full 6144 then this may be possible. As for pricing, Nikon has sort of undercut the industry in many wasy (the Z8 is maybe the exception coming in at the same price roughly or slightly higher by $100 at most) over the R5 and A7R V. But the rest of the cameras (Z6, Z7 and Z9) all have come in less than the equivalent competition. So I'm thinking this new Z6 III may be in the $2200-$2300 price range. It's a step up from the Zf, but perhaps will still keep its distance (price-wise) from a higher-res 60MP (perhaps) Z7 III with tech similar to the Zf though at $3000. So by keeping it at $2200-$2300 they can undercut Canon and Sony again.

    Nikon was way behind on AF, they finally arrive to modern standards at least with the Z8, and then surprise they put great AF on the entry level ZF,. Now all they have to do is put the great AF in Z6 and Z7 updated, and they solved the single most important issue they had compared to the competition.

They could have 500 frames a second and I wouldn’t care or they could have 16k video un-cropped at 120 fps and i still wouldn’t care. To me a solid quality image when I go “click” is all I want. So Nikon what about a “Stills Camera” without all the high performance gunk and at a cheap price to get people into the system, then they can go crazy upgrading to all this “high performance” capability. Resolution should not be a primary factor if you still use a DLSR, even with "only" 24 MP the modern sensors make much cleaner images, also the many Z lenses are just so much better in sharpness across the frame and eliminating chromatic abbreviations and focus breathing.
      What you should be looking for is how the EVF works, currently only the Z8 and Z9 have an EVF that works properly for action fotography. All the other Z cameras will show a slideshow in H+ mode making it nearly impossible to track a fast moving subject while shooting. Which is why the 11 fps on the original Z6 were defacto useless and the fps had to be dropped to h mode with 5,5 fps to be able to track the subject while shooting.
      Most reviewers will NOT even talk about this BIG misconcept. Many also do not tell that most Sony cameras will reduce the EVF resolution instead, while it is the better solution it is not optimal especially compared to OVF.

    The latest firmware 1.42 of Z5 very much improves the autofocus and adds eye detect. Subject detect locks on better. However AF would still be better on the current Z6ii likely due to dual processors vs. Z5 slower processor. Z5 could use an update to Z5ii. Or Nikon can add a lower price Full Frame for vloggers like a Z3 with stripped down features over Z5. No idea what second camera they may introduce, which is in the rumors to be announced.

For on-the-go vlogs, I skip the monitor and compose by watching my reflection in the lens. I would welcome a Z6 with a flippy screen. It would make filming on-the-go vlogs easier without the gear investment of building a video production rig.

    My guess is that the second camera is going to be a Z50II.
    First because the competition actually woke up in the APS-C space, Sony released the A6700, Canon released the R10 and R7, the Z50 and Zfc are nice cameras, but when they could compete with the Sony A6400/6600 and the Canon M50, they really fall short against the compatision now. And the APS-C mid range market is HUGE, especially with Fujifilm around with the X-S20, another well priced competitor.
    Second is actually a tangible proof and not just an educated guess : Nikon recently (like in late November of last year I think?) refresh the EN-EL50 battery in the EN-EL50a. That ain't uncommon for Nikon, they went until the "e" iteration on the EN-EL3 and are at the "c" iteration on their current main battery type, the EN-EL15c. The thing is that the release of a new model ALWAYS came with new features that were generally available in the new model.
    Typically, the EN-EL15B battery was released for improved USB-C charging while the EN-EL15 and EL15a aren't compatible, and that feature was first added in the Z6 in 2018.
    The EN-EL15C allows for USB power delivery to the camera, and you guessed it the Z6 isn't compatible, but that feature was released in the Z6II, alongside the new battery.
    Nikon added something to the EN-EL50 format, and nothing was added to the Z30/50/fc, so in my opinion another camera using that battery type is about to be released, with very high chances it's an APS-C replacement of the Z50.
    To me releasing an update to the Z5 doesn't make much sense, I would rather see Nikon go the Sony way and continue to sell the Z6II at the Z5 pricepoint. A Z5 upgrade would be the Z6/Z6II sensor (doesn't make sense to keep using that old D750 sensor) paired with the Expeed 7 processor... Wait that is the Nikon Zf. And that's 2000 USD.
    I'd rather see them continue sellting the Z6II at 1500, with the price slowly coming down to where the Z5 was. Makes more sense to me than releasing another Zf with a deep grip (imho)
    [ALSO, quick comment about the OG Z6 and the Z5 cause they get a lot of flak in this video for their bad AF performance :
    BOTH the Z6 and Z5 had very deep firmware update cycles, and they are completely different when it comes to performance to what they were on launch day. I use day to day a Z6 with the latest firmware and it's undistinguishable from a Z6II now, AF is accurate and consistent, only major advantage the Z6II has is the new focus modes (which I don't use anyway, I use tracking or dynamic point focusing) and the deeper buffer (as well as the SD card). But performance wise for autofocus, Z6, Z5 and Z6II are pretty much all the same : very accurate, Sony A7III level (still not quite up to the A7IV but still very good)
    Bottom line : if you were on the fence about one of those cameras, don't watch reviews from release time. They will not reflect what the camera is TODAY (and they were indeed pretty bad on launch day)]

      I have found the APS-C market cameras to often be too dumbed down. I hated the Canon M50. When I go small, I much prefer the Micro Four Thirds ecosystem. It has better video options, more lens choices, and I actually like the 4:3 aspect ratio over 3:2. Especially when recording open gate video with an anamorphic lens. Plus I can fit a whole system with every lens I need all in a small bag for the road.

      Did you mean IBIS or BSI sensor? I'm guessing the latter, but that's exactly why I'm skeptical whether Nikon will even produce a Z5 II. An updated Z5 with a BSI sensor and good AF would indeed be their best-selling camera, by far. And thus Nikon would lose out on a lot of revenue. So I'm afraid they'll never make Z5 II and instead try to get as many people as possible to pay 2.000+ for a Z6 III or ZF. And the rest, like myself, will continue to use their Z5 until it breaks and then switch to Sony.

    There is no compelling argument to suggest the Z6III -- at 24 megapuxrls anyway -- could not do 120fps without crop, at least 8f it's gotbeithrr a stacked sensor or an LVDS interface upgrade in bandwidth over previous versions.
    Consider from a mpment the OMDS Olympus OM-1 from 2022, a 20 megapixel camera that does 120fps raw. You don't think two kied years of industry tech development could maybe do just a tad better... and they say JPEG, they're using CFexpress rather than SD UHSII cards.

    Dropping the Z7 would be a mistake IMHO. The Z7 is the dedicated landscape camera in the Nikon lineup. As far as I can see from the dpreview test charts there is a visible drawback in image quality for the Z8, which is the new sports camera of the brand. Expecting customers that look for the best IQ for landscape to buy a Z8 which ist bigger, heavier and with inferior IQ just because it has a similar price tag wouldn't be a smart move.

I feel like everyone has a 24mp sensor that takes phenomenal photos and that's existed since the a7iii. It's just not especially exciting in 2024.
