I know this response is 3+ years late, but you should listen to Horowitz play his own version of this piece. Alot of Hungarians there that really love the Hungarian spirit :)
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen someone put so much of their own character into a piece than what he did. He plays because he loves it, a passion that every musician needs, and it shows in your performance. Whether or not you miss a note here or there will not define your music, your passion defines you as a player and performer (though as a caveat, you still need the skill to technically play the piece). Imagine a speaker with immaculate enunciation and a speaker who maybe faulters or stutters every once in awhile. In the end, what moves the crowd will always be his passion and his poetry.
David’s genius playing and his heart pouring out as he does so takes me to such an unforgettable dimension where for those few minutes my stresses and pains completely disappear and I find myself smiling so long my cheeks hurt with chills all over.. and mesmerized. So grateful for the privilege of hearing him play and share his passion and talent with us.
A genius! Liszt apparently didn't object to a free approach to his Rhapsodies. This is the most recreative performance I've ever heard. He relives the music rather than it being a museum piece set in stone. Remarkable.
Bless David, he is an example of triumph over great adversity. He plays more eccentric as he is getting older, he segments his playing and attaches particular details to each bit. He still glances at his audience while playing, he always was insecure of what others thought of him while playing.
The most spectacular conversation i`ve heard in a while! The dialogue between David and his Piano. I`am curious what he was saying cause the Piano was absolutely stunning!
Excellent comment, indeed, I think D. H. is making very clear that music is a dialogue, and dialogues are not about pronouncing every word in perfect tonality and perfect accent. They are about communicating and understanding. This guy is understanding the notes and making clear which ones are more important. The piece then becomes alive and clear and stops being an exercise of perfection to become a piece of communication!!
My son spoke to me of this movie and the true story behind it. Just watched it and now my life is so much richer. Just amazing.. thank you for the story and the brilliance of your music.
This man has played this flawlessly in the past and this is his improvised version now. It is still amazing. Lang Lang comparison is just ludicrous given that this is all natural from a man that has been down a road or two. It is inspirational on so many levels. Please upload all there is. Every student and everyone, for that matter, should see this.
i recall after seeing this movie i was inspired to learn all of the music on the soundtrack. I'm a lover of playing Liszt music since this phase of my life. Thanks David!
More imagination in his little finger than most people ever could dream of- I mean even most musicians. And I hope to God I can ever do trills the way he does-(and some other things) I think his technique is pretty enviable. And you are supposed to be able to be free and invent when you play these. It's not like some of the more formal pieces.
A pianist friend shared a paperback of Shine in the 1990s then I saw the wonderful video. Thank God for David and every part of his life - an inspiration beyond imagination. How thankful I am you are sharing him with today's world. bitsy frink willmott
I went to saw David in concert recently in Perth, the audience was completely captured by his playing and he is a great guy, at the break he just wanted to meet everybody. He managed to turn the music into emotion, just brilliant.
I just watched a newer performance of him playing this (I think it's newer, the upload is slightly later than this one) and he plays it incredibly differently to this rendition. I love his spontaneity when it comes to how to play this piece - even if it's just this one, I see a lot of freedom in his playing, and that's quite inspirational. His rendition/s are my favorites for this reason - he simply does what comes to him. Music is all about this, in my estimation.
It's not just a music piece with him, it's a whole adventure! Sometimes he might sound as if he loses and regains focus, but I believe his expressive abilities are rich and highly creative. I'd listen to anything he plays.
I am not a trained muso, I know there are people out there that can knock this sort of stuff out by the age of 10 but what Dave does is bring character and feeling to the piece. It is all well and good 'playing' a piece but it takes more to 'feel' a piece!
Mesmerizing; a musical feast listening to him play. David, a dear hearted man who obviously loves people ! Thank you for an evening of supreme entertainment. First by recommendation enjoying 'Shine', and then to see you the real David via RUclips. What a world we live in !
what a performance. what an interpretation. what an inspiration. we are blessed to have witnessed him in his/our lifetime. the movie shine is a standing ovation to this genius. thank you so much for the post.
How is it that comments posted on RUclips generally say more about the author than the subject.. David has to be one of most accomplished and nicest (creaking vessels). I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, let alone listening to. Chill Dude
Makes sense. I didn't think it was to anyone on Earth, as I noted :) (For the record, my comment was not meant as a derogatory; it is a testament to the man's genius, he literally speaks the music, and this is incredible. And, I thought, worth pointing out, although clearly in a clearer way.)
Davis is a really nice person who plays the piano. He has wit, compassion, intelligence and a great passion for Tea. If you ever get the chance to talk with him pay particular to the very first thing he say's to you, It will be a very intuitive gift for you regarding how you are in life. and he also has a memory to die for. Peace.
While it may sound a little silly to say, I had never even thought of what kind of music I like to listen to, let alone even fathomed trying to play any instrument before watching Shine as a child. I was fascinated of course, and it lead me to learning the piano. That changed my life and I cant imagine it otherwise. rather, I don't want to imagine it otherwise. People still give me funny looks when I try to talk to them about classical music from any period, as people have done to me for the last 20 years. I suppose what I am trying to convey is that this man changed my life. my existence is more fulfilling once his story became the catalyst that drew me to music. If you see him around, I ask you to please let him know what he still means to everyone like myself whos lives he has shaped inadvertantly. Much love.
THIS IS AMAZINGGGG.... I just watched the movie shine a couple weeks ago, having no clue the pianist it was centered around is a real person haha, that is amazing... and his playing... wow... i never imagined it to be so unique and beautiful
His family have come out and said a large part of that movie is inaccurate and was controlled by his 2nd wife. His dad apparently wasn’t abusive, but quite lenient according to his siblings. He was also welcomed home from overseas with open arms and even lived in the family home for a while. His sister has a lot of the correspondence between David and their late father, but she even pointed out that his 2nd wife (Gillian) was mostly in charge of the movie and would threaten to sue them everytime they tried to step in. They feel like she’s taking advantage of a man who is mentally ill (he has schizoaffective disorder)
This man is a great part of history.....classical and otherwise. It is men like him and his story that bring the interest of the rock and roll crowd, through his story. Ultimately, the revival of classical music. The value becomes immeasurable.
A really hearttouching person.Probably He always was. I really like this man. I'm hungarian as well as the rhapsody. I hope to see him ( live ) in August i n the Budapest Arena. You guys with "likes" try to come as well ! :-)
It's like he has another person inside him - one is his inner teacher and the other is himself learning from his muttering, one of the best musical film's in my opinion too
I went to see the film Shine when it came out in the cinema with part / most of my A-Level college music class. In our next class we had a discussion about notes / music - i.e. if we play the wrong / not all the right nights, does that mean we're not playing the music?
@breathingtube @ShmOprah So Glad you got to hear and see him in concert.... David comes over to my place regularly and we have brilliant conversations, he is quite remarkable.
When you look at David's history and what he's been through with a brutal father and all that, I feel that he's a much stronger survivor than even he may have thought he'd be. He is a true genius in his own right. David, extremely well done. Take care and all the best.
David Helfgott..man...I wouldn't ever compare him to any other living piano player. The music is inside his head, and he plays it like he feels when he sit at the piano. In many ways he's more "free" than so many others. When all is said, and all i done he's still just "David with a piano and music that he loves". I don't ask for anything more.. It's wonderful!
Descubrí a este artista por una peli que vi en RUclips ayer de su vida y la verdad que es muy talentoso ojala su vida hubiera sido mejor asi iba a ser mas grande de lo que fue
I have followed david's careerin which my situation similar todavid's. I play the piano, feel it is a better way, I just love the virtuosity which comes from the heart. that is better than any sheet reading of the others. heart, soul and talent, just wonderful
J'admire cet homme autant pour sa musique que pour sa personnalité, voila un artiste complètement envahi par le piano. David I love you. Eliot Rayssiguier
I readed the book of Gillian Helfgott (his wife) and his life is a lot different than movie, anyway i appreciate a lot this video, he's the best human in this world, and his piano is more than good for a person that have so many 'mental problems' (i can't translate better).
i don't know about his piano playing, but he's an incredible talker. he managed to talk for the entire piece! i don't know many pianists who could do that
Incredibly graceful and clearly articulated trills. If you want to say anything about his playing in terms of sonorities and dynamics I will just have to disagree with you, but I think we can all agree that he has fantastic tone, clarity, and rhythmic consistency. Personally, I like the fact that he is lighter on the rubato than other "more expressive" player.
Wrażliwy człowiek i pianista Oddaje nam całego siebie z głębi W 3-cim Koncercie Rachmaninowa mocne akcentu prawej ręki... wspaniałe. Gra tak jakbym chciał słyszeć.
He plays beautifully. I'm just a listener, I can hardly understand how much exercise is needed to play this rhapsody. But, comparing his performance with the performance of Jung Lin or Adan Gyorgy, I feel that Helfgott offers me a dream and freedom. Rhythm and dynamics are perfect, and their turns are shaped like a mountain creek. It's wonderful.
@ShmOprah So Glad you got to hear and see him in concert.... David comes over to my place regularly and we have brilliant conversations, he is quite remarkable.
He's doing what most pianists pretend to be doing. Expressing himself through piece of music.
Plus he's having fun
extraordinária interpretação...
Beautiful playing, this is the real Hungarian spirit.
I am Hungarian :)

Still the best hungarian rhapsody interpretation i've heard to date!
David’s genius playing and his heart pouring out as he does so takes me to such an unforgettable dimension where for those few minutes my stresses and pains completely disappear and I find myself smiling so long my cheeks hurt with chills all over.. and mesmerized. He just plays with his heart, fantastic!!
Tabea Juliane Um I hope you know he is mentally ill, he suffers from Schizoaffective disorder which is why he moves his head so much.
Jose Marmontel Olha só! Outro brasileiro... Precisamos de mais assim
Bless David, he is an example of triumph over great adversity. He plays more eccentric as he is getting older, he segments his playing and attaches particular details to each bit. He still glances at his audience while playing, he always was insecure of what others thought of him while playing.
Kind of reminds meof gelnn gould in some of the manerisms even though they are entirely his own.
David forever since i watched the movie i'm amazed !!!

He had the gift of imagination and play,, with all the suffering he went through in his life and his health !! Legend

David Helfgott is a unique and great concert pianist, I love to both listen to, and watch his performances, truly a one of a kind.
Despite his eccentricities he manages to make the piano sound alive ,and full of rich warm tonal colours. His playing is second to none.
It's not just a music piece with him, it's a whole adventure!
Sometimes he might sound as if he loses and regains focus, but I believe his expressive abilities are rich and highly creative. I'd listen to anything he plays.

I love that he talks to the piano as if they are two old friends catching up on a warm spring afternoon.
truly amazing, brings tears to my eyes
Lovely man. I have cried a lot with film shine. Over david.
So emotional.
what a performance. what an interpretation. what an inspiration. we are blessed to have witnessed him in his/our lifetime. the movie shine is a standing ovation to this genius. thank you so much for the post.
I have never heard a pianist having such beautiful high notes as David,it is pure crystal. He is one of the greatest pianists of all time, for sure.
Conozco a este pianista por mi hermano. Realmente un ser humano excepcional ❤❤❤
i heard horowitz performing this live and now david helfgott. both are so perfect and so different. thank you, david
O splendida conversatie cu pianul. He is silent, but the piano answers with sound, absolutely amazing..
one of the best movies about music i ever saw,SHINE
How is it that comments posted on RUclips generally say more about the author than the subject..
David has to be one of most accomplished and nicest (creaking vessels).
I have ever had the pleasure of meeting, let alone listening to. Chill Dude
he plays this piece with his heart. One of the most amazing interpretations of liszt ive heard so far :)
He is so CUTE! 62 years old and still doing it like a youth in love!
I love people who speak with the keyboard :)))))
I love all of David's interpretations. Just the way I want them. Nobody pleases my ears like David Helfgott
Perfect playing. Very charming. :)

Absolutely BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :))))))
Merci pour ce voyage dans votre monde . C'est merveilleux.
49 dislikes? By whom? Do they not know David Helfgott's hugely compelling story? See the movie Shine!

shining...
K István this performance is shining, but the movie is Shine in case you actually did the mistake :)
Pure genius. To be able to play such a complex piece with such emotion and still chat away on his bluetooth earpiece shows the depth of his talent.
amazing brilliant genius astounding - I can't think of the right words!
Wonderful pianist! Wonderful interpretation of this Rhapsody! Wow!
great way of saying it! I love those whose words are
music and whose music is their most fluent language>
seriously, who clicks "dislike" for this wonderful play?! who are those 7 dwarves?
I love you from 1996,you are a real artist❤
David I am so moved!
The music of my childhood, by David Helfgott...
So good I could watch this...
David Helgott is pure hearted and a genius with his music performances. he puts his heart and soul into each key played.
This man is a great part of history.....classical and otherwise. It is men like him and his story that bring the interest of the rock and roll crowd, through his story. Ultimately, the revival of classical music. The value becomes immeasurable.
AMAZING!!! How beautiful and relaxing the piece sound! I'm ur biggest fan!!
As always, thanks again, David. I love to hear you.
