It totally depends on what you're needing/wanting and the clinical condition of the tooth. If its just an edge or corner that is chipped and that's all you want fixed, then a filling is usually fine. If you are needing more than 50% of the tooth replaced and/or you are wanting to make a dramatic change to the size, shape or color, then a crown is usually your best bet.
