Thanks "Papa Malcolm"! My Two year old son Joey Jr. and Three year old daughter Olivia sit on either knee and eagerly listen to your wonderful readings. They know when Daddy announces "Papa Malcolm!" it's time for another world! Many thanks from the Lama family in Illinois.
In a world of social media, hate division political ranker unjustifide egoes and endless drivel. You are an oasis, intellectual peace, and calm. Much appreciated much enjoyed much needed, thank you.
Thank you, and I totally agree, but there are, thankfully, a few islands of reason and sense that remind us of times when there were manners charm and reason
You inspired me to read The Hobbit to my 8 year old son. He was resistant at first (he didn't want to just sit and listen), but he looks forward to each chapter now!
I recently had the absolute delight of listening to the audiobook version narrated by Heaney himself whilst wandering around the atmospheric landscapes of Sweden and Denmark. Truly brilliant experience that I would recommend to anyone visiting Scandinavia! I’m loving the channel Malcolm. Have binged half of your videos over the last couple of weeks, and will surely continue to watch the rest! Nice to just sit back and reflect on the great Tolkien, Lewis and all things Arthuriana. All the best from Mercia, Pete
wonderful translation, wonderful reading. The very source of much of our literature and culture. Have a lovely evening dear Malcolm, friend of everyone
I so appreciate you Malcolm. Few peoples would sacrifice any eye for wisdom, knowledge, poetry. Words are so very important to us. I remember when I was at Berkeley, students in the Scandinavian Department struggled to become fluent in Danish, so they could read Hans Christian Andersen in the original. Vikings, and in particular, Danish Vikings are/were a terrifying lot. The Mongols never dared set foot in Denmark. I’m proud of my heritage, but also a bit ashamed. Γνῶθι σαυτόν. This book (Beowulf), is one of my favorites, as it captures a singular moment in our history; the moment we sheathed our blades, upon fathoming these words - Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Where all others failed, this truth prevailed. Bless you sir.
Finding your channel has given me a level of peace that I cannot even describe. I've broken out my old Savinelli and I always look forward to having a nice toke with your videos at the end of the day. Stay legendary, good sir. -Trevor
I found your channel this morning, it is now well into the evening, and am immediately a fan. 24 year old living in the US I converted to Christianity just a year ago and discovered your Bibles video, I am also an avid pipe smoker and book enjoyer, your channel is the right amount of calm I've been looking for. Keep up the fantastic work and I look forward to binging all of your content! I didn't need sleep tonight anywho
Ashamed to say I clicked on this video because I wanted to mock what I saw as the affectation of your look, but I realized pretty quickly that you're genuine and what's more, you know things that I don't. Subbed.
My 13yo son has been reading Beowulf slowly for school (Ambleside) and, as a family, we've been reading and listening to your Easter poetry anthology for the last few weeks. My boys were very excited this morning to hear you read Beowulf's last battle and it led to such an interesting and beautiful conversation about Beowulf, Tolkien and Christ. Thank you.
Anglo-Saxon Prosody, a most British poetic tradition. Thanks for keeping it alive and well, sharing its wonder with your learnedness. (if you're wondering, there's 4 principal stresses per line)
I got this exact translation of Beowulf not too long ago for Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's lovely to have a part of it read to me as my father always used to do a fantastic job of reading to me when I was a child.
I have bought Beowulf to re read after watching this, I read it when I was young and need to revisit it …thank you for your videos they’ re warm, Informative and comforting
Stumbled on this channel recently, and really like it. I like the short quiet little moments of reflection. The fact I also love Tolkien, smoke a pipe and enjoy a whisky helps tremendously.
I am so glad I have found your channel Malcolm, I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. I must get myself a copy of Heaney's translation of Beowulf. Also there is something about the aesthetic of a pipe which has always appealed to me. I'm going to get my hands on some good quality Briar wood and make a few.
I like this. (Some say Beowulf lived in an ancient hillfort in our village on our island in the Baltic Sea...who knows, that might be so...some get angry and say he absolutely did not live there, some people say the aesir Tor has his grave in that same hillfort. That we for certain know is not true as we see and hear Tor as well as Tann-gnjost and Tanngrisne several time every year ...
While my passion lies in another field, I really aspire to become a person akin to you when I reach your age. The spark in your eyes when you talk about what you love is inspiring and I love watching you showing other people what you love. Thank you very much for your videos!
I studied early English and Arthurian literature 25 years ago in uni. Thank you for bringing all this back to my memory through your weekly uploads. I sincerely wish you'd do a complete series of some of these works in short segments to share with children. You have a gift of tone and diction that lends itself to the telling of these tales that I think children would appreciate.
Good Morning 😊 Beautiful Pipe 😍Thanks for the read 📜 and Translation 👍🏼 Have a wonderful day with Happy smoking moments 🌬💨💨 Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦
Malcolm, I have never been much of a reader but I stumbled on your videos and they made me want to start. I bought the Lord of the Rings books and have been loving it. Thank you
Hello Malcolm i would like to here ur take of the wind in the willows by Kenneth The Mole had been working very hard all the morning, spring- cleaning his little home. First with brooms, then with dusters; then on ladders and steps and chairs, with a brush and a pail of whitewash; till he had dust in his throat and eyes, and splashes of whitewash all over his black fur, and an aching back and weary arms. Spring was moving in the air above and in the earth below and around him, penetrating even his dark and lowly little house with its spirit of divine discontent and longing. Being its almost spring forward
One of my favorite interpretations is Parker Godwin 's "Tower of Beowulf". It made it understandable for us less intelligent people. A wonderful tale. 😊
Been looking forward to this-marvellous video Malcolm. You no doubt will know it but the 100 poems edition of Seamus Heaney’s poetry, released by his family after his death, is a wonderful anthology. I am working my way through them as a little personal odyssey-2 a week! Speaking about an odyssey, it would be wonderful if you could consider taking us on a Homeric jaunt, to and from Ithaca, in the future!
Hey Malcolm I was wondering if you had Edmund Spenser's The Faerie Queen. I believe there is a dragon in that book. I would love to hear more dragon stories.
Huge fan and recently found this channel! I’m starting to get into poetry do you have an author or a book of poems that you would recommend buying? Would love a video on your favorite poems or top poems as well! - cheers and appreciate you spreading your knowledge about this art especially during this digital age.
Welcome aboard!I'll be reading poetry and making some recommendations in future episodes. A good place to start with poems is an anthology put together by Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes called the Rattle Bag
"Bodies": an Old English version of Luke ch.2 translates "bodies" as "announce". Gives new meaning to your frequent quote from Shakespeare: "And, as imagination bodies forth/ the forms of things unknown, the poet's pen/Turns them into shapes, and gives tp airy nothing/ A local habitation and a name." - Theseus, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Act V, Scene I, 13-17.
I mean no offense if any is taken, but I cannot get over how much Malcom looks like an older relative of Jack Black. Love your video clips, readings and stories!!!!

Be careful with early parasocial relationship tho….
Beowulf bears one my favorite last lines in all of literature.
"Heaven swallowed the smoke."

How did Peter Jackson think of setting Pippin's use of the Palantir in the meadhall where Grendal entered to seize one warrior? When Tolkien did not?
how indeed!
