As a father of loss, the idea of being a shiny, happy Christian is all too real. It was though we had to thank God for the pain, with a smile on our faces. It was the comforting thought of Christ grieving alongside me and my wife that gave me strength to press on. Joy does not always manifest as happiness.
I am a 78 year old English nemo, ( pipe smoker these 60 years now ) and I love watching Malcolm`s videos, I do not have a TV, never have liked stuff piped into my home, except water. I do have CD, DVD a Lap top and of course a record player that will also play my old 78`s All the BEST!!!
06:00 YES I totally agree, I loath reading books off a screen or kindle, its nothing like holding a physical book. Even the smell of fresh or old books is just such a pleasure!
I miss the experience of shopping for, bringing home, studying, touching and listening to LPs. Must have spent hours sucking in every detail of lyric and sleeve artwork. Perfect tranquility.
The best pain was a little stab under the thumbnail as you slit open the plastic to remove the record. Then the aroma coming from inside the sleeve, . transfixing. To listen the first time, to read the notes, to devour the cover, all part of the amazing experience of buying a new album.
I am undone - I am in tears - I know enough about poetry to be dangerous and I don't know how many times I've read that poem, but this time, I heard the words and felt the meaning for the first time - it was as if CSL and Joy were right there in the room with you and here with me in New Zealand, all at the same time. It made me wonder if poems are better recited than read ...
My very favorite Phil Keaggy song is called Portrait, “Not only in the words you say/Not only in your deeds confessed,/ but in the most unconscious way/ is Christ expressed.” And it goes on from there . Last year, my high school church choir director died. He was 97 years old, and we sang for him many years ago. Every word of that song was the portrait of that sweet man, Gordon Palmer. I shared “Portrait” with those of us who loved him as a tribute. Thank you Phil for your music and your words.
It was a privilege to meet you ever so briefly at the conference in Nashville. Your session on poetry in the Psalms was wonderful. We have begun reading them to our kids after dinner. Cheers!
Seeing Phil Keaggy takes me back; I went to one of his concerts when I was in college in the early 1980's. He is so talented! How lovely that you are friends! I am in absolute agreement with you, Malcolm, in my preference for both vinyl and physical books.
I enjoy Malcolm's readings so much in these videos. I would love to be able to sit and enjoy listening to him in person sometime. But these videos are so wonderful and to have Phil Keagy join in a video as well is sensational! God bless
I pray that WE have the blessing that is Malcolm Guite for another 40 years! Thank you, Malcolm, for just being You. May God bless you and your family and everything that you do. 🙏❤️
There's nothing quite like reading wonderful first edition; the dust jacket, the paper, the printing all come together with the text to create the magic. Back to the study next time.. Thanks Malcolm.
Other than CS Lewis, Phil Keaggy and Kerry Livgren have been the greatest Christian champions in my life…I even wrote a children’s fictional Christian novel in their honor: Clouds in the Attic (available on Amazon)! Thanks Malcolm…I love your channel! The Lamb reigns victorious!!! 😊❤️
I've no idea who most of whom you are, but come to know Malcolm for his pipe smoking and Tolkien readings through RUclips. But seeing this video of good Christian fellows, I'm compelled to take a read of your book!
This is beautiful, guys! I just finished reading the first volume of Lewis letters, ending in 1931, the year he became a Christian. It's absolutely wild to be able to zoom in and zoom out of his life up until that point, seeing the mundane kind of details of his everyday life and then hearing that poem he wrote for his love dying. I just can't help but get a taste of the timelessness that God exists outside of, being able to see so many aspects of his life at once.
I can't wait to get my hands on a copy of the LP. Tangibles activate all 5 senses with me. Even the smell of the cover, jacket, and vinyl trigger a sense of taste. Thank you, gentlemen. Cheers.
I love your readings, and this pairing blesses my heart. I was a Christian concert promoter for over 20 years and a producer and artist of no particular note for over 30. Phil is one artist that I longed to work with but never did, and now, at least on this side of heaven, probably never will. This project touches the void between my longing for inspirational musical notes of wonder and the words that connect them. Thank you, Randy
I sat behind Phil at a phenomenal Steely Dan show last year (or year before?). What a night! And thank you for sharing the beautiful literary witness of Christ's love. God bless you!
What a treat, had no Idea you were chums with Master Keaggy! My father would play Beyond Nature to me as I would be put in my crib as a baby. His music is very important in my family.
It's so important to have a tangible, beautiful, book to interact with when reading. The story is the same digitally or physically, but the way we interface with stories, as readers, influences their emotional and psychological effect on us. I'll never stop loving quality, hardcover books.
Good Morning 😊 Awesome Video👌🏽Great Company 🤗 Beautiful Poetry 📜 Lovely Music 🎵🎶🎵 Thanks For Sharing 👏🏼 Have a Blessed Week Ahead 🙏🏽 Greetings From South Africa 🇿🇦
Hi Malcolm, I simple love your channel, there is so much to learn! I love the vibe of the pipe smoking and whiskey tasting. Thanks to you i keep learning about amazing literature and cant wait to read some of it ! Love the vinyl collecting as well!
“Malcolm Guite, your knowledge and wisdom are truly unmatched. Your insights into faith, poetry, and imagination are profoundly inspiring. Thank you for sharing your gifts with the world. 🙏✨
Was so nice to see Phil and Paul Clark in Kansas City the Winter before last. If I'd have known Phil was a pipe collector at that time, I'd have brought one for him. His music has filled the air of my childhood clear into the air of the present day. I can't even keep up with his output though! He's always been beyond prolific. Continually cranking out these projects like the one shown here.
I actually viewed this clip at dawn to the mass chirps of birds flocking en masse into another day in creation, seeing these old salts was just beautiful to watch We are all just a puff of smoke thru a key hole but time can reward a searching soul
So good 👍 Two of my favorite artists. What pipe tobacco are you smoking, sir? Thank you for sharing this with us.

I've always loved the concept of an album and I had a massive collection of LPs and 45s from back in the 60s and 70s. Also, my dad was a musician, so we also had many LPs from the 50s and 78s from the 40s. Thanks for the CS Lewis poems! Lovely time and thanks for sharing a get together with Phil.
Hello Malcolm, as a lifelong Tolkien and King Arthur fan I’ve recently found your channel and instantly subscribed. Just discovered your music too. Have you ever considered publishing a songbook with your lyrics and chords? I love The Green Man track. Best wishes Stephen.
Man, it's been too long since I've been able to watch a Malcolm Guite video. Terrific, as always! Some great minds coming together to make great things right here!
that you caught this live recording of the poem with the backing track was truly a blessing, and truly sublime. IT WAS INCREDIBLE! The beauty of the poem and the beauty of the music is so very wonderful. Forgive me, but I prefer Fr Malcolm's poem to Lewis'! Sorryyyy! 😬😅
Malcolm, I’m just about to order singing bowl from amazon, as a new pipe smoker I’m looking forward to reading it while I smoke. What is your favourite pipe weed and what is in your glass while enjoying it?
Malcolm, your videos are truly incredible! Would you have a recommendation on a Churchwarden pipe for a beginner whose interest in pipe smoking stems from the works of Tolkien?
Is there somewhere we can see your next talks or travels? Nashville is a 9 hour journey from my home in Northwest Arkansas and I wouldve made that to hear you!
utoob shadow bans and deletes my comments so often i won’t expound here as it won’t show, very likely. I thank you for sharing with us all Gods gift you have Phil. I want you to know my appreciation on this side of heaven. Thank You.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I wish this guy was my old man, instead of the self-centred narcissistic egotistic bully I had to endure as a kid.
Love your channel. I’d like your opinion on something. Some of the things happening with the COE lately remind me of the scene in The Great Divide where the narrator is having a discussion with the clergyman who is excited to tell the narrator all about his new theory that Jesus would have “matured” as he aged and changed some of his messages. Are you worried at all?
As a father of loss, the idea of being a shiny, happy Christian is all too real. It was though we had to thank God for the pain, with a smile on our faces. It was the comforting thought of Christ grieving alongside me and my wife that gave me strength to press on. Joy does not always manifest as happiness.

Definitely! 😀 Poetry is an oral thing. Read all poetry (and some prose) out loud to yourself. (If it feels silly, you will soon get over it!)
How did I miss this!?!?! I buy vinyl LPs . . ..it is nice to own some physical music and art
