When I was little my dad would sing this to me. I'm 18 now, he died on April 27th of this year. Rest in peace Dad. A true Newfoundlander till the end. I love you.
I’m so sorry about your loss...best wishes to you out there from me and my friends...your dad was such a special person...I know it’s tough losing a family member...hope you will feel better soon
Nobody sings songs like this better than Ray. I have been a long time of Buddy & the Fellers ever since I first heard them on Murray McLauchlan old CBC show "Swinging on a Star". While not a "real Newfie", my family dates back to the 1700's in Spaniard's Bay and I have always had love of Newfoundland music.
you made my month i am a canadan citizen by first gen rule. as a small boy i listened to songs like this and my grandfather loves this song my familly hails from the maritimes and this is my grandpas fav. song thank you for putting it up before he died and never got another chance to hear it thank you so much its bad enough he will never see his relatives im glad to give him a peice of our beloved canada to him.
All the family I have and have ever had are all Newfies. I don't know if it has had something to do with it or not but I've never been able to handle this whole song, never even before becoming a teenager, even before getting married and having a child of my own. This song is a masterpiece, nothing short of it.
This song is one of my favorites. I remember listening to this song when I moved from Newfoundland. I still go there every second summer. I was born in St. johns. I wish I was back there, its so lonely here!
The best group of musicians to come from the island of Newfoundland. Seen them many times and introduced many others to their wonderful music. This is one of my favorites. Love Ray's voice.
a few years back, me and me old man took a trip back to the rock. with the radio cutting out for hours at a time we bought a Buddy Wasisname and the other fellers cd and this was on it. I so miss being there.
thanks for posting this song. like you and slip i was born on the rock and grew up listening to songs like this and i loved them even though i was raised on mainland. However of all the song from Newfoundland this is my al-time fave (exept for a pittence of time) and this song is number 2 in my al-time faveorite songs. So thanks for posting this song

I remember the time when my grandpa and I Would sit by the fire at night And I listened to stories of how he once lived By the glow of the kerosene light. By the glow of the kerosene light. He said Mom and Dad send me off to school Where I learned how to read and to write And they listened for hours As I read from my books By the glow of the kerosene light. By the glow of the kerosene light. Your grandma and I we were wed at 16 Lord she was a beautiful sight And proudly I placed the ring on her hand By the glow of the kerosene light. By the glow of the kerosene light. About one year later, your daddy was born And your grandma held my hand so tight On I can't tell the joy as she brought forth new life By the glow of the kerosene light. By the glow of the kerosene light. But having her child, it did weaken her so She just wasn't up to the fight For she looked so peaceful she went to her rest By the glow of the kerosene light. By the glow of the kerosene light. Then as now the times they were hard To succeed you would try all your might And sometimes love bloomed and sometimes dreams die By the glow of the kerosene light. By the glow of the kerosene light. By the glow of the kerosene light.
One of the most amazing songs to come out of Newfoundland, no one can do it like Ronnie Johnson and Buddy Wasisname, and to anyone listening to this song and not from Newfoundland don't listen to the other versions done by anyone else its not the same and they could never do this song like Ronnie Johnson.
Just saw The Once live last night. They sang an awesome cover of this song. Never heard this song before or or knew of this band prior to now. If you get the chance to see them live do it!

If you're referring to the singer here, and not someone I don't know about, his name is Ray, not Ronnie.
