'05 Duramax diesel engine powered '69 Chevy C10 pickup at Byron Dragway's Diesel Truck Blackout Drag Day 11-1-15.
In Brett's own words...My grandpa gave me the truck when I was 15 years old. My dad (Don) and I took the whole truck apart and sandblasted everything. We did all the body work that needed to be done and my dad painted it for me. That was 16 years ago and the truck still has the same paint job on it. We put a tune port fuel injected motor in the truck when I first got the truck. I spent the next ten years putting different sbc engines in it. The last gas engine I had in the truck was a supercharged fuel injected 383 stoker motor. I had always wanted to install a diesel in the truck because that's what I do for a living. I'm a diesel mechanic. So in 2009 I found a Workhorse bus that was a rolling chassis with the Duramax engine and Allison transmission in it. I bought the bus and started fitting everything into my truck. We got the truck running in 2010 and added a Danville Performance ( DP) VGT 68mm turbo and DP EfiLive tuning. The truck ran and drove great. I was able to run a 11.0 in the 1/4mile. Over the winter of 2011 I made a twin turbo system for the truck. Still with the stock engine I was able to run a 10.6 in the 1/4 mile. Later that year I ended up bending all 8 connecting rods. In 2012 I went to DP and we built a new motor using better connecting rod and pistons. I was able to run a best of 9.4 in the 1/4 mile. In 2013 we added a little more power to the engine and was able to run a 9.2. At the end of the season in 2013 we decided we wanted to start racing in the ProStreet class for the NHRDA. So we built a new motor and had HSP Diesel fab up a triple turbo kit for the truck. The engine has Wagler Competition cylinder heads, Bullseye Power turbochargers, Danville Performance built motor and a Rossler turbo 400 transmission with a Neal Chance Racing Converters torque converter. We only made it to a couple races this year but we qualified to race at the world finals for the NHRDA in Ennis TX. We ended up winning the World Finals and setting a new prostreet world record with a 8.810 @ 158mph. The best part of this truck is I still drive it on the street and it even has A/C.

Thats how you can tell a proper tune most these guys chugging black smoke actually are losing power compared to what they be could pulling for the same rig. It dynos a tad better but you lose it on the track cause the tubro spools slower... At least that how I understand it.. It might just be your running to rich I find i have optimal power when there's a small puff when i throttle up and that's about it
@Twoleggedkumulava ya the amount of fuel need varries (intercooler ls using A/C or icing certain lines) on motor and parts installed, but you shouldn't really see black in the golden zone you will smell the difference in to lean vs too rich too and too lean actually kicks out a sh*t ton if the bad nitrogen compound (not so good for the air). While too rich (rolling coal) kicks out a ton soot not as bad for planet at the end of the day but pretty much cancer to anything with a heart beat.
That's for empty any way, loaded you should see a puff black during incline shifts/starts. But if your not pushing that motor to its limits you shouldn't have much of an issue with temps. If your gonna try tune a diesel get a hooked up with EGTs and you can see in real time if its getting too hot(this is basically for a race truck), one could also get a tunner that holds a few tunes on dash as long one uses a mild tune tune and goes to factory tune to tow you won't have an issue.

If I'm not mistaken if the smoke leans up after the initial launch its actually a good thing. The system needs a slight over fueling but then as it settles in and starts running more pure shows a good tune

My dad took/drove 4 boys in his car to the track(Milan in Michigan)and swapped tires,rejetted the carb and came home with a trophy almost every time. (Bowtie power) in the 60's

The amount of lugs dont matter as much as most think. Its a combination between the amount of lugs, AND the size of those lugs. EG 5 lugs that are 1" in diamater will hold more weight and torque than 8 lugs that are 1/2" in diamater.

Who else wants to see him race the crow when it's restored.
The crow wouldn't just smoke this thing, it would embarrass it.
We're talking about literally *2 seconds* in the quarter mile. This truck is still running on a significant amount of the factory frame, is steel nose to tail, and is 4 digits short on horsepower(don't give me that "...but muh torque" crap - HP is the result of an equation that's calculated by multiplying torque by RPM, so HP is LITERALLY a representation of torque across ALL RPM, which is why it's a significantly better estimate of performance than torque alone).
It's not that this isn't a fast truck or a built truck, rather it's that Chief Keef's and everyone elses 6 second "totally not Pro Mods unlike those guys that are faster than us" "street cars" are literally made up of 100% custom made racing parts from the ground all the way up. The tube frames are either 100% custom front to back, or are 100% custom from the back all the way up to the front control arm mounts("back half" chassis, that tiny piece of front frame has little affect on performance and is a poor way to determine a "street car", but that's why they do it anyways...), the engines are 100% custom(there isn't 1 single nut, bolt, or piece of Chief Keef's "Pontiac" engine - the engine block is custom, the cylinder heads are custom, the crank is custom, the intake is custom, all hardware is ARP, it's 100% custom), the transmissions are 100% custom from internals to case, the bodies are 100% carbon fiber except for the rear quarters and roof(adds *at the most* 100lbs MAYBE, and has an almost immeasurable affect on performance - yet again, a poor way to determine what dragster is a "street car", but that's what those fools use it for)
This is legitimately a BUILT street truck, it's about as far as you can take a legitimate street truck before the 'race car' aspects become too burdensome for street driving(doesn't mean you CAN'T drive it on the street: see drag week) - the 'street outlaws' stuff are literally ground up RACE CARS built with whatever few factory components that the rules they race under require, and as much custom CNC machined engine and bleeding edge electronic engine control as they can afford.

The way this is street legal but a R34 isn't. -_-
after certain years there's no emissions testing. you should know that, that's why there letting older skylines in. plus the car not only has to meet our emissions, it also has to pass crash testing. that means at the buyers expense, they have to buy multiple cars of the same make and model, and see if they come up with same results. therefore, if it doesn't pass, the person that wants to bring the car over, can't and they wasted all that money for the crash cars. it's a very expensive process to have done.
a diesel is clean burning the black smoke is just soot or carbon which is good for the environment and never goes into the air its a solid
+jdr ok as you said it does, it doesn't float in the air, it just drops to the ground. also for good diesel setups like this one. A good diesel setup won't smoke a lot. This truck was top notch and tuned perfectly. Good example of a good setup.

That said, It is still a badass truck I can appreciate. Was planning an LB7 swap in my '72 myself, however I think another project soaked up that engine and chassis.

you do realize gms powertrain built it with isuzu but isuzu handled the fuel system mainly while gm did most of the engine work and another hold here gm owns isuzu
